Intercontinental Drift It was fun for a few rounds, but then it got stupid hard. I think it would had been challenging enough even if you allowed different colors to collide with each other. <br/>The music gets a bit on my nerves. <br/>Points for being original though.
Hockey Island The scores I'm giving you are way too high. This game was just silly! To be more serious though, I wish I had more control over my island's orientation and my stick, but I suppose the complete lack of control is really the charm of it. Can't wait to see this as an actual sport.
Keytrader The way the tutorial worked was a bit annoying because I had to click while holding keys. Also, after I finished the tutorial, the game was just over. That's quite an unusual way of things. Usually the tutorial is the part people skip. <br/>Anyways, really cool concept, although obviously it will suffer from the faults of modern keyboards.
Whales of Aelia There was some problem loading the game, but it worked when I opened the SWF up directly in my browser. <br/>I think this was a fantastic game. Took a while to figure out though, but I thought in the end it was very evocative. The first time I played it I missed the opening text that explained the goal. I think that's what happened to a lot of people, but then it also might be that it's just hard to understand. It certainly took me a few tries to understand what was going on. I'm not sure if you were trying to make a statement about religion or perhaps something else, but that's what I felt I got out of it. Fantastic. <br/>I agree with Hempuli that the font was very hard to read. As for the public domain NASA image, I think that's at least somewhat fair game, since it's not even like you used it as is, and it's not a major part of the game.
Pleochorism Fun puzzle. Gets really difficult though especially when the islands are all oriented differently. Maybe the game could have an easy mode where the puzzles were the same but the islands were all upright? The music makes for a really creepy atmosphere.
The Naturalist I guess you were rooting for "Evolution" to win the theme poll? :-) <br/>Too bad the game doesn't have an end, or much anything to do after you get the mole claw. I was hoping something would let me swim to another island, but I guess it wasn't in the stars. I hope you continue working on it. I never found any use for the turtle shell or the tuxedo. Did those actually do something? <br/>Also, I didn't quite understand why Hannibal Lecter is cataloging animals. ;-)
BRAVE ISLAND DIVER This is another game I get angry at. I jump from the highest point on the map and *thump* hit the ground and lose my momentum, having to travel all the way back up. Other than that, I loved playing it. I hope you do a bigger game around the mechanic.
You are me now Fun game. I really liked the idea of connecting islands through lowering water. With literary reference too, and extending the metaphor to connecting you with your enemies through mind powers. :-) <br/>The player character was kinda slow. I think the game would feel better if he was faster.
Paradise Fort Very cool game. The controls are a bit confusing though as the key for "build" is also the key for "cancel" and the key for "throw" is the key for "accept", so it's a bit backwards. I would also probably place the jump button on A since that's probably a bit more conventional. <br/>It's not very obvious what you need to do in the game, especially since no enemies seem to ever appear if you don't build cannons. I would love to have a few more things to build or tools to use. Please keep working on this. <br/>Also, I hate those motherf*ing birds.
Hungry for Island What a strange approach to the theme! Feels kinda WarioWare-ish to me. I also started button mashing after a few levels. It gets a bit boring. I finished at around 400 forks I think. <br/>The controls are a little bit difficult because of the perspective and low mouse sensitivity (which I have maxed out in my OS so it's not just my system). It's also difficult when you can't see behind hills. Perhaps a higher point of view would be better? <br/>The music was fun and chipper.
They Came From the Ocean Very shiny. The game itself is simple, and pretty easy. I played until level 9 before I started wondering what actually happens if the black things touch me. So then I walked right into one and died. <br/>I like the screen border. Makes it seem like I'm in a submarine or a mech. Adds to the feeling of being hunted, when you kinda feel even more so like you can't really see around you at all times. Obviously you wouldn't even without the border, but the border enhances the feeling. <br/>Again, very shiny.
Island Hopping I played the original version, and while it was difficult, it was also a ton of fun. One of my favorite entries so far. The graphics are very simple, but they do their job very well. The music is repetitive but not annoying. What the game does sorely miss though is a high score table. Preferrably online high score table. I haven't played the double jump version yet, so maybe it's not that big of a deal there, but what I thought could had helped with the difficulty is if you had a minimap that you could refer to, especially for long jumps where you're staring at the sky. Frankly though, I think maybe you should limit the player's vision or just make looking up not do anything, because that's a bit of an annoying thing to have to do. My best score was 49700. I got close to that on other runs, but on that run I got a 4x multiplier followed by a decent combo, so I got lucky a bit. <br/>Oh, I guess the game also really needs a tutorial. It's not obvious that you have to tilt your view to affect your jump height. <br/>I hope you keep working on this. I'm going to download the double jump version now and play some more.
Deep Under an Island "Under" an island? Not so sure about that interpretation of the theme... The puzzles are fun though, although they do get kinda samey with big areas of apples to chomp through. <br/>Short and sweet, I guess. I feel like there are probably a few interesting level designs that you could still squeeze out of the mechanics.
Roller-Derby 20XX: Mega Islands of Awesome Fun game. It's really hard to avoid the blockers when jumping though. Most of the time I would die from hitting them between platforms and falling down. <br/>While I agree that the music is good, I'm going to leave that as N/A because I think using GarageBand loops for Ludum Dare is a bit suspect. I've pretty much heard this exact same music before!
Rocket Bike To Space Very pretty and I really dig the music. The gameplay is pretty fun basic Canabalt-style one-button hopping, but I didn't really like that you could not jump when your bike was bouncing off the ground. That just made the timing more punishing and the gameplay that much frustrating. I suppose in that sense this game is oldschool in both good and bad ways. Also has a very Japanese feel, what with the anime big eyes and all the sushi. <br/>I still love that music. I think I'm going to leave it on loop for a little bit. :-P
L'il Guys and the Floating Islands Fun game. I like the visual style too. Makes it look very clean. Some of the earlier levels got a bit boring because there were so many l'il dudes and I just had to watch them go. Background music would probably help there. <br/>I hope you make more puzzles for the game. There's a lot of unexplored potential here. The last level had some really good challenge going on, although it did kinda require some fast twitch play at the end.
Nuclear Test Pretty crazy. I wasn't quite sure what that was but it was pretty crazy. <br/>I guess I do agree about settings making for bad themes, because you can just make any game and place it in that setting. I do think that several games used it well though. I guess you used it in reverse, where the setting was really out of this world even though there were some islands in there. Good show.
Island Escape A solid platformer. Good production values too. Opening and ending cutscenes, level select screen. Good show. I was only really bugged by some minor things, like not being able to see if there were medusas (?) in the water below you when you jumped in, and the moving platforms had odd motion ranges where they would overlap the ground, which once caused me to die because I misestimated my jump and fell into a pit, and another time because the moving platform pushed me back into spikes. But that's minor. The level preview feature was also awesome.
The Floor Is Lava I wish it had a feature that saved your highscore. I'm not sure what mine is, but I'm pretty sure I had over 400. <br/>I think really, very good as an LD game. Does just a couple of mechanics very well. I think it could be improved with a couple of additional mechanics to make it more interesting. Enemies maybe? Dash move? Double jump? Something to consider.
Nieuwe Aarde I really enjoyed this game. Playing a few games, figuring out the strategy necessary to escape. Good stuff. It would had been cool to see the monsters, and I wish the game had some background music, but even as it is the game is a lot of fun.
Infinite Deadly Islands Of Terror Fun. Good use of theme I think. Your island generation algorithm seems to be pretty good. I didn't even realize at first that they were random. Then on my second run I actually ran into unbeatable levels though. You give a little, you take a little. <br/>Could use some music. The bridge tile should probably fill the space. Now it kinda looks like you might fall through gaps between tiles.
Message I loved the interface and it's cool to see a story told through gameplay. The visual style was also very good, although the player character was a bit bland. <br/> <br/>I do agree that the music you chose fit very well with the game, but I'm putting that down as N/A now. I suppose I could judge the new music, but I understand that it was made outside the compo period, so I think N/A is probably more appropriate. To comment on the new music though, it's probably a bit too upbeat. If you develop this further and decide to use your own music, I think a slower song like the Brother Android one would probably work better.
Tropical Islands of Doom A very pretty game. The penguin and the turtles look unnaturally shiny though. The penguin looks like it's made of rubber and the turtles look like they're polished marble or something. Regardless, the gameplay is pretty basic. The level design was pretty good though; I only missed one treasure chest on my first run through, even though technically the world is completely open for me to go anywhere.
Monkey Islands Well, the graphics are beautiful and the music is a joy to listen to, but it's not much of a game. I hope we'll see a real game come out of this.
Islands: Through the Sweep of Stars The graphics are very very nice. I especially liked the ending. The "gameplay" though is very simplistic, and the riddles were a bit arbitrary and didn't follow any pattern. I would love to see you do another series of these, or perhaps flesh it out into a graphic adventure.
Radio Silence Very atmospheric. I wish it had a bit more challenge to it, but it was still fun to search for the radios based on sound. Discovering the first one was a good moment.
Is Lands? That's a pretty bad pun... and there wasn't much to play. The music and graphics are nice though, and it's kinda neat to fly the plane around. Maybe you could do a continuation with more complex levels.
Island Rescue This game keeps making me angry. The villager keeps drowning himself. Totally not my fault! The controls are a bit slippery, which killed me a few times. Didn't make it past level four. I'm afraid I'll start breaking stuff if I try more. <br/>Well, I think the fact that I got angry at the game is telling that it's actually kinda good. The graphics are pretty and the music is pretty good, although it gets a bit repetitive after a while. I think you might want to work on the controls a bit. I think it'd also be nice if the villager had a little bit of AI so that it doesn't drown itself when there's higher ground nearby. <br/>I've been mostly trying to get the villager to high ground as quickly as I can, then trapping him and playing tetris above him. Probably not optimal, but saves me from worrying about the little prick.
Poke-Slayer Can't really say I enjoyed this. I really wanted to buy a flamingo too, but the game didn't let me buy one! <br/>I do appreciate the effort. A song with lyrics is a rare thing on LD. <br/> <br/>Oh, and where's the source code?
Hula Girl HD Well, that was kinda funny, but annoying to play. You need to match the "steps" to the rhythm of the music. Otherwise it's just Simon.
The Noah's Ark I'm giving you a bit of points on innovation and humor, but the connection to the theme is pretty vague and you obviously didn't put a lot of effort into this.
Island Airline It also crashes for me. Hope you get it fixed soon. I downloaded it after you posted that you had fixed it, but it still doesn't work. <br/>Rated just for community now.
The Forgotten Isles A nice way to tell a story. Gameplay was a pretty basic maze thing. I do agree with other commenters that the control should be relative to the camera. I do not mean think that you need to change the camera angle. Just change how the controls work. I do think if you work on this further, you should add something more than just the maze. Mazes can be a bit boring unless there's a lot of different things to see. <br/>Some people commented on music, but I didn't hear any.
Baby Leviathan: Eat All Fishies Cool swimming mechanic! I wish there was more to do, more levels and an actual ending. There's a lot more potential here.
Every Man Is An Island So those platforms are actually dead bodies? O__o They look kinda abstract. <br/>The game is pretty good. I think the physics are very good so the character feels fun to control. Once I managed to jump down through a platform, so there are some bugs it seems. The game was over too quickly :-( It could also use some music and sound effects. Would love to see a longer version.
Piratey Tycoon A bit hard to get into. You should have instructions that you can read at your leisure instead of scrolling by slowly. Trading doesn't feel very piratey. Seems to me like pirates were the enemy here. Also, you should make an executable that runs your game directly, or at least a batch file to run it for you. I'm not sure everybody gets how to run the game. <br/>Good show. I think with some tweaking this could be a lot of fun.
Artifact Hunt Very pretty. Not that much substance though. The first time around I forgot to run, so I starved because there weren't enough bananas. The bananas should probably be more visible.
Voyage for the Queen I stopped playing when pirates hit my ship. First I was happy because they didn't took my bananas, which I was gathering, but then I went to resupply at the Queen's castle and lost all my bananas. I mean, the game did warn me, but I figured since the pirates didn't take the bananas, the Queen's resupply wouldn't either. I wish I could had just dropped off the bananas I had and continued getting the rest. <br/>I think the game also needs a compass or a map to help you find the Queen again. I managed to find her, but I wasn't sure I was going the right way until I did. <br/>Basically though, fun basic trading game.
Mad Hatter Island Jumping required pretty high precision. Could had used some leeway there. Also, I'm not sure this game had any islands in it. Still, a neat little platformer.
Crowned in Doubt The lighting effects are excellent, but the game is really hard to play thought because you can't see the bugs unless you're constantly spinning around. It also seems like moving around doesn't really help. I think the game would be more interesting with a larger level with other light sources that you could take a breather in.
Tango So, I guess it's not actually a game. I think an interesting mechanic to add would be to have an option to make the fighters protect you from missiles. The camera is sometimes awkward. I do like the minimalist visual style.
Ultimate Baluga Whale This is not how you enter Ludum Dare.
Dnalsi I couldn't figure out how to play the game, so I left most of the ratings as N/A. Also, why are there two exes in the zip file? Is your source code really one huge file? You're braver than you look. O__O
Super Macho Minesweeper It's just not that funny a joke.
Island of Bounty I like the arrow shooting mechanic, and the little native dude looks cool. The island obviously looks very tiley. The opening fall is a bit confusing. I first thought I was sinking into water. There needs to be stuff on the foreground going past so that you can tell that you're falling.
These cannons fire too fast This was basically pretty fun, but really slow at least in the beginning. The game kept crashing on me on level 2 so I couldn't really see if it takes off after that. <br/> <br/>Capturing the islands was a bit boring since you just sit there capturing. The enemies were also really easy to fight. I think the control scheme was basically a neat idea, but I got disoriented with the mouse movement several times. It should probably be a relative motion instead of an absolute one, so that if I flick my mouse to the right, my ships turns right. <br/> <br/>Also the standalone version wouldn't run even though I do have Java 6 installed. Got the error "Could not create the Java virtual machine."
Island Robotica Conceptually good, but has some issues. It seemed like the map was littered with invisible walls. It seemed I could never fit into single tile spaces, even though the car/robot seems to be that size. I also found brown areas that looked like bridges but that I could not drive on, which was strange. By that time though, I could jump high enough that I could drive a bit into the water and jump across. That I also found weird. That I couldn't drive on some areas that looked drivable, but could drive a little way into the water. The only gun I found was the zapper, which was a bit annoying to use since I could not move while using it. It's like it was a temporary landmine or something like that. One final thing was that I had little clue as to where I need to go, except the little star on the map, but then that was my main goal. I had very little clue on my immediate minor goals. I was also a bit confused at first because I couldn't jump but if I pressed space it would still make a sound and I would lose energy. <br/>Sorry about all the complaints. The good news is that those are not too difficult to improve upon. :-)
Island Construction Malfunction Cool game. Kinda feel like it would fit the Flood theme better than the Islands theme, but I can still see that the goal is to get the dudes on areas with no water, basically islands. Some of the puzzles got a bit difficult to grasp because the water started out so far away from where the dudes were.
Waves Not too bad. I like the mechanic of boosting yourself out of the water. Reminds me of Fishface. It would be nice if there was more of an indication on when the chopper is going to be on the landing pad. First time I got there there was nothing there, so I figured I need to do something first, and the second time I got there the chopper was just leaving so I thought maybe I missed it. Then it came back though, but I wasn't sure. I left the game running for a moment and did something else while waiting for the chopper to come back. I felt the sharks weren't very threatening since they only took points off, but then they were really hard to dodge because you don't have very good control over your character underwater. I would tilt the balance towards more threat and more control.
WeComeFromTheSkies This game seems promising, but has a lot of issues. You can't tell which islands and dragons are yours and which are your opponent's. Sometimes I would start the game and start out not even looking at my castle so I wouldn't know where it was. It also feels really slow to get your economy going if the nearest islands are far away. By the time I had a single dragon, the opponent had five. I like the concept here, but you need to work on the details.
Island Warz Son of Galcon. Well, it's obviously still unfinished, but it's still good fun for a couple of minutes and it's a good use of the theme.
Islands!?! Curses!?! Did not work. I do have .NET 4.0 and XNA 3.1 installed. Couldn't find an XNA 4.0 runtime.
Zombie Grinder Looks like you took more than a little bit inspiration from River City Ransom. That's ok, but I was kinda hoping the game would have the open style world from RCR. It was kinda fun anyways though, but a little basic, and it seems like it didn't matter how many times you died, and it also seemed like by far the best way to beat zombies up was to do the flying kick over and over again. I did like that you got friends to help you out when you got further. I think that mechanic could be really interesting in a more fleshed out game. I didn't really like the zombie horde following you. It made it so that I was less focused on fighting and more focused on dodging. I suppose that kinda makes sense though. <br/>I was a little disappointed with your use of the theme. The game could had just as easily been in any other setting, and it seems like I was running along the beach the whole time. It would had been interesting if I had started in a forest or something and made my way to the beach. <br/>A couple of technical things: You should probably look into audio compression with MP3 and OGG. 35MB is a lot to download on slow connections. Also, where's the source code?
Treasure Tub Fun use of photographs. The game really needs a multiplayer mode. The audio got a bit on my nerves. Also, I think the bullets could use some immediacy; it was kinda hard to tell sometimes where you were really shooting when you and your opponent were both moving.
Ascention Neat puzzle game. Like an indirect platformer. I'm not so sure I see the theme here though. I mean, I suppose floating platforms could be islands, but you need to sell it a bit more. <br/>I got up to a level where you start out at the bottom left corner with a yellow block above you, ice platforms at the top and a blue platform in the middle. I got stuck on that. I couldn't see a platform above the screen to get to, and there were no buttons, so I'm not sure what that was about. Does the game end there? <br/>Extra brownie points for making it in Javascript.
Arcipelago A strange take on the theme. A dude made out of islands? The level design is a bit haphazard, but had some neat ideas, like riding the platforms.
Islands At War Well, that's pretty neat, but a bit too luck based at least on the hardest difficulty. I'm also still confused as to how the finances work. In the screenshot right there, how much does a gold tower actually cost? It's not free because you can't build it without any money. Is this just a bug? <br/>I think the towers lack feedback in general. It's kinda hard to keep track of how much damage you're dealing to the ships or the HQ. Some elements of this reminded me of Plants VS Zombies. If you decide to develop this further, I'd look at PvZ for some pointers.
