LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Heart of the Cards by Neon 2018-05-10T11:13:59Z

Love the graphics, and overall I enjoyed it - I played it all the way to the end. But in the end there's no real deckbuilding...just shoot straight, and even that's made difficult by the right-offset firing point. If you could see maybe your next three cards and pick which one to fire it would give an element of strategy! And then you could do things like water-stun someone and then lightning them for MASSIVE DAMAGE!

On the other hand, I think the "There's no health bar, you lose when you run out of cards and getting hit knocks cards out of your hand" thing is brilliant!

It's got a lot of potential. You could have a "real" game going here with just a little more work!

Mortal Keybat by dob 2018-05-04T05:51:25Z

Great job! The theme mashup worked great, the game was funny and fun. I don't know if allowing people to pre-type words and only type the last letter to actually "attack" or "defend" was intentional, but it worked well! The last level was actually difficult, but I did manage to beat the whole thing.

Turret Defense Hero by beefsports 2018-05-01T13:54:03Z

I can see what you were trying to do - combine tower defense with Guitar Hero. But it just doesn't work well. The sounds that play when your turrets fire are grating and there's no music. I found the best strategy to be to simply spam fire turrets so I only had to press one key on the beat. Also, I experienced the same lag and shutdown problems others talked about above.

It's a bit of a shame because when I saw the concept I thought it was going to be great - and it could be, with a little more work.

Power in Numbers by amras0000 2018-05-01T17:04:15Z

Got a handle on the mechanics pretty quick but was only able to destroy six buildings before I was completely overwhelmed by the police. Still fun...if you can quickly factor numbers in your head :)

The Legend of Block by maesk 2018-05-01T16:35:27Z

I can't get past the second set of rooms even though I've got a solution that should work. If the solution I've got isn't the right one, I can't imagine what the right one is. Is it possible to rotate the tetraminos?

Dash and Slash by Bookworm31 2018-05-10T10:50:16Z

More a puzzle/platformer as you figure out the best order in which to play your cards to get through the level. Nothing wrong with that! Simple graphics and sounds but nothing wrong with that either. Pretty good!

Thank you for playing! I felt that keeping the timer at 5 minutes was short enough but also LONG enough that the player felt he was making tactical decisions. And of course, the next time you play I put the skip in so you can go straight to part two.

LD #41 Entry - RED V S BLUE by ViridianGames 2018-04-24T09:54:59Z

Yes, the subversion is supposed to be part of the game, but if I'd had just a little more time I would have made them all run in from their respective sides and kill each other. I may make a post-compo version that does that (and slows down the text and uses buttons so people see the upgrades better and runs at a higher resolution and....)

LD #41 Entry - RED V S BLUE by ViridianGames 2018-05-10T18:52:48Z

Yay! All I wanted was for someone to hoot with laughter after the big build-up to the battle only to get a dating sim instead :)

LD #41 Entry - RED V S BLUE by ViridianGames 2018-05-11T23:40:53Z

@goffmog If you do things perfectly in the dating sim you can get his real opinion about the book - which is hinted at by the fact that he knew it was about rabbits :) And Watership Down is absolutely one of my favorite books. I'm trying to get my daughter to read it right now.

A source post is possible...if I can overcome my fear that everyone will laugh at how poorly it's written :)

LD #41 Entry - RED V S BLUE by ViridianGames 2018-05-11T23:41:57Z

@Behenate Thank you! I just wish I hadn't run up against one of its limitations during development. (I swear that render stretching worked the last time I tried it!)

LD #41 Entry - RED V S BLUE by ViridianGames 2018-05-12T13:55:37Z

@goffmog @Bernhard Okay, you're right, it's a requirement and I shouldn't be so shy :) Source released! All the libraries it depends on are open-source so putting it all together shouldn't be that hard (he said, tempting fate). Also, I'll be posting a post-mortem of the game on the blog soon.

Learn Runner by gustavo.christino 2018-05-04T05:41:00Z

I'm glad losing doesn't require you to start the game over, it just continues. I wish the jumping was a bit more accurate to make it easier to miss things I know I'm not supposed to pick up. Having said that, it's a pretty fun little game and the mashup of genres is successful.

Greg Island by LJFMX 2018-05-13T00:28:28Z

I loved the low poly style and was actually very impressed by the camera swoop at the beginning of the game. But bugs made it impossible for me to pick anyone but Emo Greg, who was my least-desired Greg. The dating sim stuff was a bit light, but the walking sim was handled very well. Overall a good job!

Mayor Metal Man by randomphantom 2018-05-04T03:10:08Z

I like this a lot! The two "incompatible" genres are actually pretty compatible, and while the citybuilding is simplified it's satisfying. That said, I initially thought the floating bubbles over buildings meant there was money in them (it's not, it's their hit points) since that's how you were doing money for citizens. The zombies never showed in my version and I...eventually went on a rampage and destroyed my own city. Still, that was fun!.

A Fistful of Shrooms by gdort 2018-04-24T05:36:02Z

Short but pretty sweet. A single line of instructions on the title screen telling you that you can manually reload by pressing the right mouse button would have been VERY helpful. I'm not sure how this is mashing up two incompatible genres, though.

Blackout by Arthur Amorim 2018-05-11T23:51:21Z

A good idea (though I'm not really seeing the genre mashup). The problem is that it's hard to remember what to do by color - and even harder when the lights go out and the monster's colors change. Making three differently-shaped monsters would have helped in that regard. I too had a little trouble figuring out how to start the game but got past it. I could never get anywhere near all 8 pages though.

Scrabble Invader by SvenFrankson 2018-05-10T19:12:56Z

Well, this...um...well I don't speak French so...it seems like it could have been fun but obviously I couldn't do the scrabble part.

Sheet Music Editor Shoot'Em Up by hypp 2018-04-24T05:48:42Z

You're my front-runner right now. This is the rare game that is okay with few instructions; the basics are easy to pick up and you figure out more stuff (like what the note lengths do) as you go. The bounce mechanic is great and the shooting feels good. Great stuff.

BattleFarm: Bullet Season by Crimson 2018-05-10T10:59:31Z

A great idea that if expanded might make a good "real" game. Right now if I'm on the same vertical line as a Rambo when he comes on the screen I'm toast. As far as I can tell, dandelions don't have a use though...

Still, good idea pretty well executed and could be even better with some more refinement.

Dance Masters of the Universe by EmptyButton 2018-04-24T01:47:55Z

Fun! But I'm not sure how well it fits the theme. I guess the setting is a ballerina studio that is being invaded by demons? It's also quite difficult; if you don't kill the spawners quickly you soon get overwhelmed and your powers are not that powerful. Also, some music would have been nice!

On the other hand, the ballerina and enemies were drawn and animated well and all the mechanics worked properly. So a good effort.

Beat to the sky by Thylomer 2018-04-24T01:38:12Z

Not bad, but it would have been nice to rotate the pieces as they drop. And if you can do that, then it would have been nice to have some instructions telling you how to do that. More music would also have made it better.

Shape Destroyer: Ascension by Lumos 2018-05-10T11:27:16Z

I simply could get the menu for building buildings to show up; all I could ever do is improve my core. The shooting isn't bad but also isn't great...with its regenerating ammo and fast fire rate, the starting gun is actually the best. I wish I could have seen the "other half" of this game.

Town Warfare (RTS Shooting!) by magicera 2018-05-13T13:59:17Z

Oh, I was so disappointed when you couldn't shoot in RTS mode because that would have made the game like Syndicate, one of my favorites! So while the RTS mode wasn't really compelling or complete, the FPS mode pretty much made up for it - the shooting was good (hitscan shooting is always fun). If only you could have ordered your guys to attack in RTS mode!

Rocket-Pet by owenmdvd 2018-05-14T23:18:22Z

Nice! I really liked the mashup, the rocket ship was cute and the controls were easy to understand.
