LD26 — Minimalism

Tessitron by radmars 2013-05-02T02:50:00

Cool stuff. I liked the boss mechanic, that's something I haven't seen in music games. The gameplay didn't quite seem to fit super well with the music though.

This One by kidder 2013-04-30T02:38:00

oh no! haven't seen that error at all but I will try to take a look :(

This One by kidder 2013-05-07T04:54:00

Thanks for all the comments, everyone!

As for the framerate issues: this was a problem we struggled with throughout the Dare, and though I thought what we shipped was good enough, this was clearly not the case. :( Definitely a lesson here about using more proven middleware.

We did end up working right down to the wire, so the theme didn't get worked in as well as I would have hoped. The fire ability is meant to be extremely overpowered, so that it is all the more poignant when it is the first element to be removed. Unfortunately, it seems there were a couple of game breaking bugs that prevented people from getting to the second level, which is when this happens. :( Later encounters require a bit more creativity to get through, but the first level is easily solved through brute force.

This entry is definitely lacking a lot of polish around the edges, but we learned a ton (this was the first Dare for all of us) and I'm absolutely ecstatic seeing all the comments from people that played. Thanks so much for playing, commenting, and voting!

Bangarang by Infernal 2013-08-26T03:34:00

Difficult to get a handle on the depth of enemies, but neat idea.

1 AM by Soundboy 2013-08-26T02:54:00

Awesome job. A great use of interactivity to explore a theme, and good writing too.

Firefly by kidder 2013-08-26T04:03:00

Thanks for all the feedback!

Sorry about the collision problems! It seems to be my Achilles' heel in these types of things. I'll see if I can put together a fix for that shortly.

Firefly by kidder 2013-09-11T22:22:00

Thanks everybody!

@Atmospherium
The jump is pretty floaty, haha. Partially intentional (trying to recreate a more dream-like quality) but mostly just the result of too little iteration.

@theholychicken
The stars don't disappear - but that was actually the first thing I planned to implement! It never got finished, though; everything else seemed more important.
I debated leaving the sounds in for a while... I wasn't really happy with them, but leaving them out made the world feel too empty. I liked that they added a bit of presence - not a lot, but enough to ground the game world. I totally agree that they aren't entirely appropriate for this game.

@Gabriel
Thanks so much! Glad so much of the aesthetic came through. I haven't decided if I want to continue doing anything with this project.
I used Othello for the 2D stuff, mostly for easy sprite/texture management. The collision and level loading code was all done by hand (using Tiled as a level editor). I am pretty excited for 4.3. I hope it makes 2D things more streamlined.

Time and Shapes by Woftles 2013-08-26T03:29:00

love the synthesized voices. very challenging and fun to play.

Mashals of Knaveland by Jorqell 2013-08-26T03:52:00

Loved the humor. I think the game could have benefited without the timer - but it didn't seem to have much of a consequence anyway.

Hurry UP! by Sense 2013-09-07T00:54:00

Wow, incredible art, music, and mood.

O by Once Upon a Team 2013-09-07T00:07:00

Very zen and Flow-like. Love the art.

Tracewire by Drachlen 2013-08-26T03:39:00

Woah, fun, challenging, stressful. Great atmosphere and polish.

LD28 — You Only Get One

Charcoal by IonProgramming 2013-12-17T05:48:00

I like the ambiance, with the sound and lighting. Brutally long maze, too. :)

One True God by kidder 2013-12-17T05:00:00

@code-11: Thanks for the feedback!

Totally agree on all of your points. We would have loved to get more of a tutorial or way to learn in-game, but as you can imagine time was pretty short. I've tried to make some things clear via the in-game tooltips and the instructions on this page, but some things are intentionally vague to encourage experimentation and exploration. But that's a fine line to walk, of course.

Some of the UI actions are a bit unclear - I'll try to clarify the language in places to make it a bit less overwhelming.

One True God by kidder 2013-12-17T07:46:00

thanks for all the feedback guys!

@BluShine happiness meter is a great idea. Region coloring was on my todo list, but it got cut :(

@Nut definitely needs some tweaking. The balance between profit/growth is a bit funky right now, and it basically comes down to expanding churches. Gonna think about how to adjust that a bit.

@john_conder9: I just fixed the bishop management bug :P The balance right now makes it easy to get money but hard to get followers - there actually is a win condition if you get enough.

Power Core Defense by oyster_crusher 2013-12-17T19:52:00

Neat variation on the tower defense genre.

Spectrum by Keith Evans 2013-12-17T20:14:00

Fairly standard puzzle platformer, but well-implemented and very polished. I love the bounce animation on the orb when you jump.

You Only Get Juan by EvilObjective 2013-12-17T05:25:00

Love it. So glad somebody took advantage of that pun.

Where's my Present? by Zerkruemler 2013-12-17T20:11:00

Adorable and surprisingly competent puzzler. Would have loved to see some more difficult puzzles.

Last of Kind by Mr.Cassels 2013-12-17T06:36:00

This is amazing. I giggled aloud for about 30 seconds straight. And then my roommate came over to see what was up and did the exact same thing. A+

To That Sect by gamesbyangelina 2013-12-17T20:08:00

Creepy and...kind of weird. Enjoyed it, for what it was.

Monochrome by anapff 2013-12-17T19:46:00

Cute art. The idea was fairly interesting but the floatiness of the controls made it very difficult to execute on. Awesome job for your first LD!

Before Night Falls by WetDesertRock 2013-12-17T05:35:00

Slightly broken on a retina mac - only takes up a quarter of the window. Difficult to get past the title screen because the button positions don't match the hitboxes.

Besides that - cool idea. The puzzle advancement is a bit slow at first, but there are some interesting things going on once you get past the few few levels.

The Day the Laughter Stopped by Crabman 2013-12-17T07:58:00

Wow. Very nicely done and very moving.

Mayor's Holiday by Corné Dorrestijn 2013-12-17T19:40:00

Cute.

License to One by udo 2013-12-17T20:01:00

Hugely impressive - 3D art, sound effects, music, and an actual tutorial? Nice job. Balance could use some work - units are so slow that it's difficult to move them into position on time. Funny DRM commentary, too.

LD29 — Beneath the Surface

Escape Enclosures Expeditiously by zeh 2014-04-30T03:58:00

Good usage of minimal graphics.

Enemies didn't reset when I died, which make an level three impossible to complete after a couple of deaths.

Drip by savethejets1 2014-04-30T06:44:00

Neat idea with great ambiance, but I found that the sometimes-frustrating platforming interfered with what otherwise would be very zen.

Colony 31 by Crazi456 2014-05-08T01:10:00

Super polished for a jam. Narration is very reminiscent of Bastion (in a good way). Very well designed levels, too - although I do wish the drill came a bit more into use.

Under Warranty by kidder 2014-04-29T03:17:00

Exported a new version that's a bit bigger - should help a bit with the font/reading issues!

Ben Eath: The Surf Ace by Afal 2014-05-08T06:23:00

I cannot believe there are two (more than two?!) games that used this pun. Well done, sir.

It's An Invasion!!! by JaR_ 2014-05-06T03:44:00

Very polished, nice job.

Planet Corp. by Maschinen-Mensch 2014-04-30T04:17:00

This is great. Amazing art, love the news broadcasts, and the mechanics are solid, fun, and well polished.

Underline by eufrik 2014-04-30T03:54:00

Lovely. Simply mechanics, but nicely polished and good ambiance. Very hard, I didn't make it very far at all - I may try the version with checkpoints later.

Ramen Master by RowdyGhosts 2014-04-30T03:48:00

Love the graphics and concept. Difficulty curve could use some work, it ramps up pretty slowly.

From Below by TyrusPeace 2014-04-29T03:31:00

This is awesome.
