Thanks for all the comments, everyone!
As for the framerate issues: this was a problem we struggled with throughout the Dare, and though I thought what we shipped was good enough, this was clearly not the case. :( Definitely a lesson here about using more proven middleware.
We did end up working right down to the wire, so the theme didn't get worked in as well as I would have hoped. The fire ability is meant to be extremely overpowered, so that it is all the more poignant when it is the first element to be removed. Unfortunately, it seems there were a couple of game breaking bugs that prevented people from getting to the second level, which is when this happens. :( Later encounters require a bit more creativity to get through, but the first level is easily solved through brute force.
This entry is definitely lacking a lot of polish around the edges, but we learned a ton (this was the first Dare for all of us) and I'm absolutely ecstatic seeing all the comments from people that played. Thanks so much for playing, commenting, and voting!
Thanks everybody!
@Atmospherium
The jump is pretty floaty, haha. Partially intentional (trying to recreate a more dream-like quality) but mostly just the result of too little iteration.
@theholychicken
The stars don't disappear - but that was actually the first thing I planned to implement! It never got finished, though; everything else seemed more important.
I debated leaving the sounds in for a while... I wasn't really happy with them, but leaving them out made the world feel too empty. I liked that they added a bit of presence - not a lot, but enough to ground the game world. I totally agree that they aren't entirely appropriate for this game.
@Gabriel
Thanks so much! Glad so much of the aesthetic came through. I haven't decided if I want to continue doing anything with this project.
I used Othello for the 2D stuff, mostly for easy sprite/texture management. The collision and level loading code was all done by hand (using Tiled as a level editor). I am pretty excited for 4.3. I hope it makes 2D things more streamlined.
love the synthesized voices. very challenging and fun to play.
Loved the humor. I think the game could have benefited without the timer - but it didn't seem to have much of a consequence anyway.
Very zen and Flow-like. Love the art.
I like the ambiance, with the sound and lighting. Brutally long maze, too. :)
@code-11: Thanks for the feedback!
Totally agree on all of your points. We would have loved to get more of a tutorial or way to learn in-game, but as you can imagine time was pretty short. I've tried to make some things clear via the in-game tooltips and the instructions on this page, but some things are intentionally vague to encourage experimentation and exploration. But that's a fine line to walk, of course.
Some of the UI actions are a bit unclear - I'll try to clarify the language in places to make it a bit less overwhelming.
thanks for all the feedback guys!
@BluShine happiness meter is a great idea. Region coloring was on my todo list, but it got cut :(
@Nut definitely needs some tweaking. The balance between profit/growth is a bit funky right now, and it basically comes down to expanding churches. Gonna think about how to adjust that a bit.
@john_conder9: I just fixed the bishop management bug :P The balance right now makes it easy to get money but hard to get followers - there actually is a win condition if you get enough.
Neat variation on the tower defense genre.
Fairly standard puzzle platformer, but well-implemented and very polished. I love the bounce animation on the orb when you jump.
Love it. So glad somebody took advantage of that pun.
Adorable and surprisingly competent puzzler. Would have loved to see some more difficult puzzles.
This is amazing. I giggled aloud for about 30 seconds straight. And then my roommate came over to see what was up and did the exact same thing. A+
Creepy and...kind of weird. Enjoyed it, for what it was.
Cute art. The idea was fairly interesting but the floatiness of the controls made it very difficult to execute on. Awesome job for your first LD!
Slightly broken on a retina mac - only takes up a quarter of the window. Difficult to get past the title screen because the button positions don't match the hitboxes.
Besides that - cool idea. The puzzle advancement is a bit slow at first, but there are some interesting things going on once you get past the few few levels.
Wow. Very nicely done and very moving.
Cute.
Hugely impressive - 3D art, sound effects, music, and an actual tutorial? Nice job. Balance could use some work - units are so slow that it's difficult to move them into position on time. Funny DRM commentary, too.
Good usage of minimal graphics.
Enemies didn't reset when I died, which make an level three impossible to complete after a couple of deaths.
Neat idea with great ambiance, but I found that the sometimes-frustrating platforming interfered with what otherwise would be very zen.
Exported a new version that's a bit bigger - should help a bit with the font/reading issues!
I cannot believe there are two (more than two?!) games that used this pun. Well done, sir.
Very polished, nice job.
This is great. Amazing art, love the news broadcasts, and the mechanics are solid, fun, and well polished.
Love the graphics and concept. Difficulty curve could use some work, it ramps up pretty slowly.
This is awesome.
