LD38 — A Small World

Sky Roads by BloodJohn 2017-05-01T05:42:28Z

A very enjoyable game! The art and music mesh nicely into a pleasant experience. I would say the one downside is that it how far you can go feels very arbitrary: if you get a city in the middle of a forest, it's expensive to connect it, no matter what you do.

MiniAnna Jones! by impiaaa 2017-05-02T20:45:49Z

An excellent game! A few comments:

The rotation was difficult to control (at least with the mouse). A slower rotation speed would have been helpful. Also, for some levels it would have been very helpful to be able to move the camera to look straight down.

The gameplay mechanic is intuitive, but still engaging. The one problem I had was that it wasn't immediately obvious at first which blocks could and could not be removed. Once I had figured that out, though, it wasn't a problem.

The graphics and feel of the game are remarkably compelling, especially given their blockiness.

Good job!

I Just Wanted Groceries by Jedeen 2017-05-01T05:48:58Z

Great game! A clever concept for the theme, and very well executed. Lots of "Noooo, don't talk to me!" The one downside is probably that the difficulty varies drastically based on where the groceries spawn: top right is easy, by the door is hard.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have some tomato and chips stew to make....

An Adventurer's Exodus by Aggrathon 2017-05-01T20:15:04Z

This is an impressively large game for a Ludum Dare. The gameplay is fairly intuitive and the village map art and the menus are great.

Unfortunately, when I tried to go to the final battle, the game screen changed, but the battle didn't load. I can't tell if the game is incomplete or if it's a bug.

Of course there's only so much that can be done in a weekend, but the art for the battlefield (especially the hexes and cards) didn't mesh with the game at all.

In terms of balance, it seemed that loading the entire party up with copies of Magic for Dummies was far and away the best way to deal damage. Melee weapons just seemed weak, and healing unusably weak.

All in all, thought, an impressive amount of work for a compo game.

Tilil by Roberto Romao 2017-05-02T22:49:25Z

A good game. The mechanics were intuitive and the game did a good job of keeping you scared you were all going to drown without making it impossible to win. The story felt a little unnecessary and didn't mesh well with the gameplay in my opinion, but the gameplay and art held together well.

Small World Collider by tylerraz 2017-05-02T22:59:41Z

A great idea for a fun little game. I enjoyed it considerably. I found it nearly impossible to have any kind of control over the game with more than a couple planets, though, because of how much the planets knock your paddle around: you might consider making the paddle less affected by collisions for a sharper feel.

Also, Pluto's ability was hilarious. No more being bullied!

A World in a Jar by Zeknir 2017-05-03T16:24:34Z

If I had found this game elsewhere, I would never have guessed that it was made in limited time for a game jam. This game is seriously impressive. The mechanic is easy to get into, but there are enough different plants to keep you guessing and piecing clues together. An absolutely amazing production for a game jam.

The one feature that I found myself wishing for was a way to see what combinations you have already tried. For example, when you select one plant, the game could highlight the remaining plants red/green/gray for doesn't breed/in plant-o-pedia/not tried yet. This would cut down on some of the grinding when you've got one you can't figure out and you don't remember what you've tried already.

Lead the Ants by matita 2017-05-01T04:17:49Z

A very nice idea, but the gameplay isn't satisfying.

The biggest problem is that the player has to spend most of his time doing nothing: click, wait several seconds to move, repeat, find food, place pheremones, wait a couple of minutes. Speeding up the player's move speed would help. Another idea to reduce downtime would be to add a game speed setting that lets you accelerate the game's speed through the collection phase.

A clever and original idea for a Ludum Dare game. Hopefully you'll be able to flesh out the idea into a game later.

Shrinking Space by Landon 2017-04-27T19:44:30Z

A very nice game! A few comments: - Sound effects. Obviously there's only so much you can do in 72 hours, but while the firing animation is viscerally pleasing, some "BAZZAM ZAM ZAM" is really needed when you're frying enemies with a blaster cannon. - The HUD is large and blocks out much of the screen. Shrinking it and putting it at the very top could cut down on the "this thing is in my face" feeling while still communicating the necessary information. - It's not clear to the player when an area is removed. Some sort of visual effect might be helpful for clarity. - I like what you did with the key. It took me a bit to find it. - GAAAAH A green guy ate my face again. Seriously, I have no idea what to do about them before I have the propeller expect go back to the last screen to respawn the enemies. - A bug: pressing the down arrow on the victory screen makes the text flicker/move.

All in all, I found this to be quite an enjoyable game. Good job, and I'll be back tomorrow to leave a rating.

Seven Pillars by Jeremy Ryan 2017-05-01T04:34:12Z

A very clever and original concept for a game.

Pros: - Having to move across the keyboard with the cat makes the experience surprisingly immersive. I found that the best way to keep up was to "jump" my hand in sync with the cat's jump animation, and found it to be surprisingly good at getting me engaged with the game. "Channel your inner ninja cat" is a good description. - The music is very good, and fits the game well.

Cons: - This likely varies from keyboard to keyboard (which I suppose is a potential con as well), but I found the angled-numpad controls to be a bit awkward to use quickly. - The game does not punish incorrect keypresses. This means that in a pinch (i.e., trying to finish up the last couple of moves before sunset), you can button mash all remaining buttons. This is unsatisfying at best.

LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Mr. Capital! by fluidvolt 2017-12-06T03:34:53Z

Managed to beat the game. The theme is super strong and the mechanic is great. The one thing I felt this game really needed was a little bit of edge forgiveness: I did a LOT of falling off of platforms I thought I would stay on.

Piggle Puzzle by fractalsunrise 2017-12-06T01:27:18Z

Thanks everyone for the great comments! I'm glad people are enjoying our game.

@jeffrey-hwang: We'd have loved to do automatic level transitions, but we didn't have time. Will definitely bear that in mind if we do a post-LD version.

@abilean: The theme connection is "The more piggles in the pen, the worse it is trying to get them to the goal". Some of the levels (*cough* level 9 *cough*) fit the theme better, but it's true that the early levels are less that way. We didn't want to make it too hard while the player is still learning the ins and outs of the mechanics.

Party Penguin by LiquidBrain 2017-12-06T17:51:57Z

I really liked this game! Judging by the comments above, I may be alone in this, but I actually thought level 2 was the hardest: it took me three or four tries to beat level 2, but I beat level 3 on my first attempt. I found that the extra control granted by having speakers on the diagonals more than offset the number of controls to manage (and of course, nothing is forcing you to use them). Good job!

Somni by Timestop 2017-12-06T03:18:06Z

This is a great game! It's especially impressive given that it's a jam game: the only real problem with it is that it's too short, and that inevitable given the constraints of the game. I hope you are able to take more time with it and make a full-length game out of it.

An extremely minor nitpick: If you are walking when you enter conversation, your walking animation continues to play in place during the conversation, which is slightly distracting. Not really an issue, but something you might want to know about if you're going to keep working with this.

Clutter Bug by Abilean 2017-12-06T03:23:35Z

I have hereby decided that having a phone is no longer important. It can sit at the bottom of the pile forever for all I care, lol.

Very nice game concept.

Critter Clutter by Burgee 2017-12-05T06:55:30Z

A good game! The mechanic is solid and the music is excellent.

A critique: for a game that's about precise clicking, there's a lot of visual noise going on: it's hard to quickly pick up the right critter when the entire area is covered with particles from the last one.

All in all, though, an impressive game. Good job!

Western Hero by Guilb 2017-12-07T02:10:20Z

This is a really good game. The mechanic is solid, and a great take on the theme.

The one thing I REALLY wish I could change is the player's movespeed: it feels like I'm trying to have a gunfight while walking through molasses. Also, I think it would be cool and helpful if the townspeople used their little speech bubbles to warn you of incoming bandits: it would make finding them easier and add to the atmosphere. Of course, I understand that it's hard to do things like that during the jam.

All in all, though, definitely one of the best games I've seen thus far. Good work!

Manystar by alexfalkenberg 2017-12-06T03:09:02Z

This is a good start to a game. It's a pity it isn't ready: I think it has great potential. I hope you're able to complete is post-LD.

Starbage Man by BryceLTaylor 2017-12-06T03:50:25Z

A very funny game with a clever mechanic. I really liked it.

It does feel like the minigame of moving your cargo from hold to hold is never actually important: it's easier and faster to just fly to the black hole and dump the stuff.

Also, I ran into a game-breaking bug: the boss appeared, said "Next time, you should be a little bit more considerate" and then the boss screen never disappeared, rendering the game unplayable.

Despite all that, I still think this is a really good game. Good job!

IntenSEAty by Casper 2017-12-06T00:28:45Z

The art and music are very good. However, if you are going to make a bullet dodging game, it is very important to keep the controls very sharp. As it is, it takes too long to stop and turn for dodging to really be possible. I want to like this game, but it just isn't very fun to play right now. A good idea, and I hope you can improve it into a great game.

Space Crash by nikchernyakov 2017-12-05T06:50:28Z

A solid game. I would recommend making the bottom of the screen kill you when your entire ship goes below it instead of half: I died several times because it felt like I should have more room.

Phase by pichuscute 2017-12-07T01:54:00Z

It's a good concept, but I'm finding the controls too difficult to manage: I keep crashing into walls because I can't get the car into the center. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like I'm fighting the controls more than playing the game.

The graphics and audio are really good for a jam game, and what I've seen of the mechanic seems solid. Good job with those!

LD42 — Running out of space

Mindblocked by diptoman 2018-08-14T05:29:18Z

This is an excellent take on a classic mechanic. While many move-in-a-straight-line puzzles are vulnerable to easy solutions found by working backward, the mechanic of placing your own walls largely bypasses that problem. Well done!

Card Tower Defense by frozenfire92 2018-08-14T06:07:10Z

The concept is so cool! I just wish I had more time to think: most of the time I found myself just throwing cards down randomly because I didn't have time to plan out a good defense. Still, it's a very strong idea and a fun little game.

S.O.B.A.D. by Jamie Reed 2018-08-14T14:49:08Z

This is an incredibly ambitious project for a compo game. Congratulations on making a working game in the time you had! I would have liked to see your idea for golem corpses making walls: it would have added a unique gameplay feature and connected the game to the theme much more strongly. However, it's still just impressive what you did with the time you had.

S.O.B.A.D. by Jamie Reed 2018-08-14T17:08:36Z

@jamie-reed That's a really cool idea! I hope you're able to finish your game with it.

The Legend of Cactus by Astericon 2018-08-14T14:56:23Z

The win condition was confusing, since the first time I played the game, I won after the first room, and the second time, I wandered through several rooms not finding anything. The mechanic is strong and the theme connection is clear. I really wished I could move faster and that there were more enemies: too often the correct strategy for a room was simply to run in a straight line throwing bombs backwards until all the enemies were dead. Still, there's a good idea there and I liked playing it.

Flame VS Water by Taner 2018-08-14T05:49:27Z

A very polished game for the compo! The art is very distinctive and the game feels satisfying. I just wished I could have more to do: a few abilities or different guns would go a long way. I hope you are able to continue to add to the game!
