LD39 — Running out of Power

Truck, Fuel my Rockets by garethjenkins 2017-08-19T18:34:47Z

Good game, liked everything about it (played the jam version). Really cool how the fuel capsules bounce around in the back, making the game feel kinetic and tight. Awesome sound effects, I prefer the same ancient technique myself (though with a bit more post-processing : D). Gameplay felt a bit easy. If you added multiplayer and something to break up the monotony (enemies or powerups perhaps) this could have some real potential. Great job with the game, good luck!

Zest & Goop by conk 2017-08-19T22:10:50Z

Very nice, I like this "time management" active style of tower defense game. Good idea, good execution. There's just couple of things I would change:

-The spikes draining energy all the time. Makes sense realism wise, but it's a big hassle in game. Maybe have them come up only when enemies pass over?

-I didn't realize at first you could pass through walls. I guess it makes sense since you're a ghost, but why not just not have them there at all since they serve no gameplay purpose? The path on the floor should be enough to let the player know the route enemies will take

-The big enemy should have something to distinguish him from the rest, a bright outline or something. Couple of times I didn't see him from under a horde of smaller enemies. He seemed like the only real threat in the game so it would really help if he was easy to spot and follow.

Not meaning to sound harsh, it's just that this is an actual good game so I'm giving actual critique. Great job on it, definitely one of the best games in the jam I've played so far. Good luck!

Glowsticks by ratly 2017-08-01T15:23:59Z

Cool game, nice sound and feel. It just gets repetitive really quick. If something was added to the mix once the player gets far enough, and if there was a way to lose, this could be a really good little web game.

Runner Out Of Power by Mathiouza 2017-08-01T15:10:56Z

Nice cutscenes and polish, but I found the gameplay very simplistic and unoriginal. I feel like the game could've used some kind of unique gimmick.

Expectations by thebmxeur 2017-08-19T15:19:40Z

Somehow I got the idea that the game is about someone on their deathbed, even before reading g-o's comment. So thematically the game is interesting but gameplaywise really unclear. Now I'm all for being vague about what things do but when the player tries something there should be some feedback. I had no idea if what I was doing was having any effect on the game. Maybe that was the idea? Interesting experiment either way, good job

Tank Battle ! by lavwa 2017-08-20T12:38:04Z

Fun game, and like has been said very ambitious for a jam game - great job pulling it off. I didn't really have any problems with the difficulty, aiming was hard at long range, but doable. After killing 7 tanks in a game it looks like tanks stopped spawning, the scoreboard thing said there was a green tank but I couldn't find it so i just drove around for 2 minutes. Unlike some others are saying I thought the execution was good. Only problem I had was spotting tanks at long range. Maybe some kind of floating indicator would've worked there. Good work with the game, I liked it.

Edit: one thing I forgot: the power mechanic didn't really come into play much, more could've been done with that. But with how much stuff you got into the game in such a short time, I can see why not every mechanic is done to perfection.

Breathless Parks - Running, out of Power by gonutz 2017-08-01T23:05:13Z

Even if the gameplay is pretty basic the artstyle and setting really make it. Voiceover was the best part. Goddamn Matlock man. BTW I just uploaded the 32-bit build of my game you requested, if you're still looking to check it out.

Thanks for the bug report on my game, but I'm not getting any issues myself. I'll look into it but can't promise anything, sorry.

Power Defense by Strigifo 2017-08-20T13:13:40Z

Cool game, and yes it's pretty hard, but not too unfair. My annoyance with the controls was having to use the mouse to pick what to build, having to lift your hand off the controls is not too cool. Nice bit of variety here using different building spots and weapon pickups.

A bug I found annoying was that the turrets would shoot before turning to face an enemy, so they waste a shot and often take damage as a result (this bug was very obvious when building three turrets on the middle platform). Another one was that enemies seem to follow different rules when they're offscreen, not doing or taking damage.

Also, holy 107 megs o_o. I actually thought twice about downloading it, even though I have a fast enough connection - maybe UE4 is not the best for this type of game?

Despite all this negative stuff I'm writing, I really did enjoy playing the game. Great work, and good luck!

CoolCoalGame by Gris 2017-08-01T15:43:49Z

It's pretty mindless, and not much of a challenge, but still somehow strangely addicting - kinda like a clicker game i guess. If it had bit more depth and balancing it could be pretty good! I also thought the music was kind of fun, simple as it was.

Drain by morphine 2017-08-01T18:03:05Z

I didn't much like the "Falling off platforms you can't see" mechanic, but everything else was just great. Cool to see this kind of game in a jam, very atmospheric.

Sol Probe Power by GettingRekt 2017-08-01T17:03:34Z

Nice concept, sort of reminded me of old gravity based games like lunar lander. The game was pretty hard, I didn't manage to beat it. Would be cool if the planets casted some kind of shadows or something, so the player could tell when they're about to enter an area with no sunlight even when they're further away from the sun and the inner planets.

POWERBEAR by flarphengarg 2017-08-01T19:00:54Z

If the game got more difficult the farther you get it would be improved a lot. Good work with the bear sprite!

Thanks for the comments guys! I like to keep the game hard, and the starting power low enough that player isn't one-shotting enemies from the start, but something obviously needs to be done about the difficulty (goes to show how little playtesting your own game is worth). I plan to make a new version later, maybe I will then make the power decrease slower at the start of the game. I'll come up with something. In any case I will be adding a tell for the enemies with projectile attacks, and some new scoring mechanics. Thanks again for playing and for telling me what you think!

@gris Good point about the controls - I hadn't even considered that. Will definitely offer an option for WASD in the next version. Thanks for the comment.

@gonutz - Thanks for the info, I hadn't realized I had the 64-bit build of Löve. 32-bit is up now.

Geocentric Survival by Bewelge 2017-08-01T14:46:53Z

Great game, though it can get pretty easy once you get the hang on it. Add dangerous UFOs once the player gets far enough? : D Really liked it, good luck!

OnFuelDrain() by reizoukin 2017-08-19T18:06:51Z

I got 3500 points on my third run. The game's fun, but I didn't find the "hits to fuel"-mechanic impacting the game too much, I found myself using the F-key a lot. I think the game would've been more interesting if the enemy shots were more avoidable but also more impactful (both health and fuel wise). Also, you start moving backwards if you rapidly tap left and right while thrusting.. probably not intentional

From Hero to Zero by pixfixtv 2017-08-01T19:29:48Z

Awesome graphics. Gameplay was good, nothing special but enough for me to beat the game even though it took me three tries. Juggling enemies was the best part for me and worked great, nice synergy there between the punch and throw mechanics. What was the second bar under the health bar for?
