LD35 — Shapeshift

windowframe by managore 2016-04-19T18:22:00

Wow. Just Wow. Really awesome mechanic. Looked a bit smallish on my Retina Display, but it really was an amazing experience.

I really enjoyed the fact that there were a ton of moments when I would be stuck for a second then I would figure it out and be like "Aha! So the level design is *this* smart!".

Overall, I think taking the game outside of the constraints of the window just brought it closer to the player and made it incredibly more immersive.

PERMUTATE by TravisChen 2016-04-19T18:34:00

I had quite a bit of fun playing this. There are some shapes I prefer over others but it was enjoyable. It felt a bit more like a toy than an actual game, but it didn't diminish the fun. Loved the calm mood and the funny sounds the items made.

Cherokid by EdoMiyamoto 2016-04-19T19:42:00

Wow, a great 3D game done in such a short time :) quite a large map and plenty details. And funny enemies, the zombie otter rocks. A map would be good to get faster around. Good luck, with a little work on gameplay you can go forward! Stefan (omlette.du.fromage)

Through Oneself by Omiya Games 2016-04-19T19:06:00

Really nice concept, using the camera as mechanics. Also, nice music. Feels very Anime-Urban.

What I felt was immersion-breaking, though, was that the crowds and the sterile test chamber-like (I'm thinking Portal) environment with all the huge blocks and buttons didn't quite mix, so at the end it seemed like it wasn't important that the protagonist was a human girl or that the crowds were crowds, I would just play the game mechanically.

Still, the puzzles were interesting and fun. Kind of felt like a mix between the block pushing in a Zelda game and the different kind of thinking that Portal requires.

Transform! The Three Natures by cudabear 2016-04-20T15:59:00

I really enjoyed this game.
Cute graphics and mechanics :)

I think you got a bug on death, no idea how to restart.

Great job!

PaperFlap by WetDesertRock 2016-04-20T16:18:00

I would like to play the game but I don't have Love2d installed.
You should make an .exe at least. From what I remember it should be pretty easy to do that :)

CHORUS by Pantelis Petsopoulos 2016-04-25T11:52:00

I think it's great you did a rithm game, I really this kind of game;

Here's what I think you can improve gameplay-wise:
-> When text "Chorus" pops up, you can barely see the game, which can be annoying.
-> Find a way to let the player know what shape is next and/or let the player go backwards as well. For a new player, it's confusing to get the shape right.
-> I'd let the player use his own music.
-> Visual feedback when you get the shape right/wrong; something like particles or lights.

BrainRequired by Geckoo1337 2016-04-20T16:47:00

This game reminds me of AntiChamber.
Impressive aesthetics.
That voice was the main attraction (+ funny speeches) , I just enjoyed listening :))
Great job!

UPSHIFT by Jessica Hayley 2016-04-19T22:01:00

Finally an original rythm game. Really good interpretation of the theme, really good music, immersive game.

The first issue that I recognized was that there is little to no feedback for when you get the beat right or wrong. It took me a bit to figure out the controls.

The second issue is that I think it's too hard. Allowing hits to be slightly more off beat would tip the difficulty balance right in the sweet spot. This way, players feel they're making progress, but at the same time they don't get it for free.

I've been playing this for the past 30 minutes and I love it. The way I found it works best is if I keep the tempo with the left hand while tapping the direction with the right.

Listen and Shift by Goutye 2016-04-19T17:06:00

good idea and game! maybe have some more words based on some themes

Pasowix's Magical Shapeshifting Workshop by glaze_96 2016-04-20T20:40:00

Cute concept. I need to show this to my roommate. He makes cat-astrophal puns.

Mushroom Muncher by Kuality Games 2016-04-20T09:41:00

I didn't quite get the connection to the LD35 theme, I guess the mushrooms that change...
Except from that, the game was really fun :)
The controls might need some adjustments, maybe make the frog run faster.
The graphics and music are awesome.
Great job!

Staff of Life by Fartenko 2016-04-20T16:34:00

Really awesome entry, polished indeed :)
The only problem I had was that I kept hitting the walls when being to close and trying to shoot in the other direction.
Apart from that, fun game.
Great job!

A walk to the top by JK5000 2016-04-19T20:16:00

Lovely puzzle game. It was ok on theme representation but really enjoyable difficulty ranking in puzzles. Nice music and funny SFX for the character. Quite fun, Good job!

Taymishi the shapeshifter by Genpaku 2016-04-20T16:28:00

I find interesting the fact that you created .swf
It is the first build of this kind I see on LudumDare :)
I like that you participated anyway :)

Tunnel Rider by lebrokholic 2016-04-19T16:29:00

The graphics are really cool for a jam game. As said before me, music's a bit repetitive and the losing SFX is quite annoying.

I think, though, that while the gameplay had something interesting, the novelty wore off after approximatively 30 seconds. It may not be my kind of game, but I felt there wasn't anything motivating me to keep playing. A good example of a hook in a game with similar mechanics is what Super Hexagon does: Give the player a goal; Have a finite level (60 seconds) that you have to pass.

MONSTER'S BUFFET by glitchu 2016-04-19T20:00:00

Funny game, at first took me a while to get, had to get back on the page and check the controls. Maybe a quick complete tutorial would work better that the hints. And it suits very good with the theme. With a better graphic and maybe some controls for mobile, would be a cool game. With keyboard is a bit difficult tu chase people around :). Good luck! Fluffy the Porcupine Saves the World by iapc 2016-04-19T18:51:00

long live the fluffy procupine! really nice game, crude graphics but kept me playing

The Skinmancer by derr 2016-05-09T16:47:00

nice game, a bit unusual the controls. I like the music, the pixel art is quite cool. took me a while to get to the shapeshift squirrel. is moving very smooth. good luck!

Plasticine by Kafumanto 2016-04-19T19:36:00

Took a while to figure out what to do. The game seems to be fun. Maybe have the starting speed a bit slower. Liked the music and SFX and it was quite a good representation of the theme. The font is a bit hard to read.

SPELLDOWN! by pixelpotions 2016-05-09T16:33:00

But this game is supper annoying :D need to get a graphic tablet to perform. Interesting idea and pixel graphics. Good luck!

Exhuman by Arvydas 2016-04-20T16:57:00

The graphics look awesome. It seems that you put a lot of effort in it :)
It took me a while to figure out how to fight due to mouse and attack direction. You should work on that more.
Great job!

Oops! My Dear is a Deer by Remdiky 2016-04-25T11:41:00

My! This is so much fun, but I'd rather call this an experience, rather than a game. Amazing nonetheless. First time I shot a couch and it turned into a monster I literally said out loud: "What the s**t!!".

What bugged me is that there's no feedback when you lose a life, and I think having two ways to lose (run out of ammo or lose lives) is kinda bad. I'd rather have unlimited ammo, but have to pay attention to monsters; ofc this implies the mosters should be a little smart.

Also, you may want to remove the ".pdb"s files from the download. Those are used only for debug, and only make the download size increase.

Shadow Play by Xu 2016-05-09T17:25:00

Well polished game, sharp graphics, well done story, great gameplay. A very interesting idea. liked it. Could have some sounds. a mobile version would succeed on market. good luck!

Shifty Shapes of Grey by goibon 2016-05-09T16:59:00

Wow, super cool music. The graphic is simple yet very sharp. I enjoyed the game, maybe for mobile is better, if you could develop a version. Good luck!

Papyrogami by Trickman 2016-05-09T17:14:00

Oh my, what a game, the music is great, maybe a bit of polish on the mechanics. The graphic, is sketchy and cool. love it. Good job!

Volleymania by Avon 2016-05-09T17:04:00

It reminds me of another volley game, lot of fun in multiplayer. this is with a twist. Simple yet fun. Good luck!

2045 Henkei no Densetsu by Rock Eaters 2016-05-04T08:39:00

Quite a nice game, i like the pixel art. Maybe some zoomed details with the enemies on the cards at the end and the character might help the immersion in the story. I didn't found, maybe there are, but some collectibles would improve: coins, food, weapons, whatever else that can improve the game. Good luck!

zerkitu by Paradoxa42 2016-04-25T11:29:00

The controls are tricky; I would change the default to something more common.
Other than that, the gameplay is solid.

NekoShift by kostik1337 2016-04-19T19:53:00

Quite a cute game. Loving the graphics and music. Didn't quite get what I was supposed to do. It was fun to run around with the little kitty sprite. Didn't quite use the other shape.

Go Away, Zeus! by Crimson713 2016-05-09T17:19:00

that's very funny, the sounds and the funky animals. cool B-)

PsychoShift by Ratmena 2016-04-19T18:44:00

The soundtrack is amazing. I left the game running for a while just to listen. The controls are hard to get a hang of. It took me a while to figure how to combine them and move around.

Squircle by Wan 2016-04-19T18:04:00

I'll begin by saying I came here after you posted to our game. You asked how we did the curved wall. I posted a reply on our game's thread referencing you to the source. Basically, we keep an array of points for each of the walls, then do deltaY * e^(x^2) on all points when a drag happens.

I must say I really enjoyed the story. Subtle irony with respect to conventional love stories and a proper cliffhanger. The mood could be complemented with some sound, but I felt the story broke through and immersed me.

Overall, it was a nice experience, but in the beginning it was a bit frustrating.

I had some issues with the controls. I couldn't figure out how to jump with Circle. It wasn't immediately obvious that you jump more if you're horizontally moving. Also, occasionally, Square wouldn't go to the edge. It would stop almost there leaving me a bit stuck. Somehow the controls felt a bit fidgety in the end.

Heavenly Hell by luckyy 2016-04-20T16:24:00

OMG ... I just keep dying ... so annoying xD
Fun game anyway.
Awesome pixel art :)
It becomes annoying after repeating again and again, but I guess that's what you planned to be.
Good job!

@all: Thanks a lot. We really appreciate all the feedback and we're so grateful that you guys like it.

@mar3k: True, we didn't have enough time to thoroughly set the 3 star threshold for all levels.

@Wan: Thanks for the feedback. For the implementation, the repository is available at https://github.com/dapetcu21/omlette-du-fromage Look in RopeController.cs

@rodobodolfo: There's an Android apk available on itch.io. We're also considering polishing it further and putting it on Play Store.

@Freank we added the game with that tag, same name Do-od.

@AuthorX unfortunately, we got no idea why you have that issue.
