LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

The Saver by dunin 2018-12-28T11:54:03Z

This is a really polished looking piece for a Jam game! Overall one of the most effectively "finished" I have seen this Jam.

The graphics are very simple but very atmospheric and effective. I really think its was a great style choice visually and fits the gameplay.

I like the audio on the whole, and I get that it was likely again a pared-back style choice which works well, but I think the music was too sparse for me, I wouldve liked a bit of the blank space filled in maybe, like it mightve made my replays feel less repetitive if there was more music going on?

The gameplay fits the theme really well, it can be frustrating like all jumping puzzles but that is part of it :) I liked learning the order of who to rescue first and which skill to give up etc, which made it fit the theme and better than a flat jumping puzzle. My main observation is that I found the actual wall-jump input a bit challenging, because I felt Q is badly placed and Space is not easily responsive enough (hardware related probably) it wouldve been nice for a mouse click option.

On the whole really nice though :)

This is a really great looking and sounding game for a jam effort - so polished in such a short time!

I like the concept and the gameplay, and the graphics are amazing. I had a few playthroughs of this and it was a good balance of frustration and challenge! the sheep move in a predictable but variable way which means you inevitably end up either losing a few or chasing them back on track which is really good and stops it just being a maths equation to sacrifice X amount.

comments for improvement would only be that less repetitive BGM would be good and also a few times i had collision problems with the sheep and the bushes, but these were very minor.

One of the best ive played from the whole jam! :)

Colors of Your World by DDRKirbyISQ 2018-12-28T14:20:09Z

This is such a nice entry and so well done - it is very polished and pleasing to see/hear/play!

I really like the art style, music and concept and you should be very proud of achieving this within a jam timeframe. I am new to making content for games and this is something to aspire to!

If I had a small comment it would be that I felt the sacrifice theme was not totally embedded in the game (it could be the same game with or without the sacrifice concept, and still be as good).

Suggestions rather than criticisms but: Mechanically I would like a mouse-bind for jump as over long periods I find keyboard only gets a bit uncomfy, and also I found sometimes I would respawn so fast I'd still be pressing 'D' down and I'd run right off the ledge and die again, but this is minor in context of the rest of your game :)

Beyond by MouthlessGames 2018-12-30T22:55:02Z

This was a really cold and gruesome narrative game haha. Well done on your atmosphere, audio and theme. I think its really cool to see the point and click as a jam entry.

I think maybe the pacing at the very start was a bit slow for me, but this is really hard to get exactly right without time to playtest so that is understandable!

also itdve been nice if there was more freedom in the exploration, so you had more natural ways to find your choices? thats the really good part about point-and-click, that it sometimes took you hours of wandering about to find the next action progress. However i get that this is a jam so that was probably not achievable in the time - but maybe now you have the mechanics down you could expand the game out to be more free roaming?

well done and i hope you enjoyed the jam!

Conga Line Survival by fashionbatman 2018-12-30T22:02:23Z

This is a cool take on the snake classic - it really took me back to playing Snake on an old Nokia - obviously this is a lot more appealing in video/audio though.

I liked how the gameplay was simple but also challenging - like the difficulty really ramps up quickly. I was able to get a best score of 25 but then it gets really hard not to get hit by the red guys.

My only suggestion to improve the concept would be to make the dancer/character model textured like the conga dancer pickups? I did find the orange colour harder to see than any other sprite and that was your main guy. Also sometimes id press a direction to start the game and die immediately cause id move into the wall? maybe locking the spawn in the middle would help this?

overall a good effort though, well done!

Blender Pets by Gunturtle 2018-12-28T12:52:09Z

I like the overworld graphics and the concept of the game. The music and sound effects are very good too. I like the combat effects for the creatures moves, but there is not enough tutorial or guidance on how to do the battle/combine mechanics and this seemed really confusing at first. I also think having either a static background or a texture in the battle screen would make it clearer than the moving grid, it kind of threw me off.

If there were more guidance tips and a bit more clear graphics in the battle it would be great, but it has really stylish overworld :)

Zealot by walnoot 2018-12-31T00:30:41Z

This is a nice entry - a shame you forgot about ratings because i think it woulda done well! :)

I like the appearance and the sound effects - and i liked how well done the mechanics were - especially the wall-jump which felt very responsive (a lot of other games this jam i have noticed have tricky wall jumps that dont respond well). I really liked the way you managed to add an item-related checkpoint system too, and how it also triggered other game elements, its nice to see that inter-linking in a short timescale game.

I think some BGM wouldve helped a lot with breaking up replays of the same segment, but this is tough to do in the timeframe. Also some of the hitboxes for enemies and obstacles were a bit tricky to predict (e.g. I felt hitting the spike traps from the side sometimes felt like they had a bigger hitbox than the sprite itself, but that could just be me!)

well done and good luck in ratings!

SLAP HAPPY by Ratherjolly 2018-12-28T13:05:40Z

This is a funny concept and humorous execution.

Definitely the best voiceovers ive seen this jam!

although the graphics were simple I liked how the models actually changed when you slapped them etc - like there was actual interaction. Really cool for a game made so quickly.

I think it was stretching for the theme a little is my only observation, oh and maybe more ice because its so fun to slap them I got a bit carried away xD

Nature is Harsh by hav24 2018-12-31T00:12:44Z

This was really fun and cool - great audio, cute graphics, solid gameplay with multiple mechanics - really impressive for a game made so quickly! it was fun and challenging to play but not frustrating or impossible to win.

Tetrifice by Johnny Turbo 2018-12-30T22:30:45Z

Hey - this is a solid rebuild of the classic tetris game. I think this is an unusual approach for this jam theme and the only tetris build ive seen so that is interesting. Also appreciate the vlogs you did about the learning points of making this game.

the cons for me were the lack of sound - the music was a really big part of tetris for me and it serves a purpose of making the game feel more dynamic - especially if it speeds up as the pieces do etc. Similarly a sound effect on sacrifice of a block wouldve given it more impact.

I cant remember the control system for classic tetris (been a while!) but i found pressing UP to drop a piece to the bottom was a little counter-intuitive to me?

these are minor things that could be changed after playtesting though - so well done overall :)

Sacrival by Rewzu 2018-12-30T22:11:18Z

this was a really cool game for a Jam effort. I did find the controls a bit unwieldy, especially when the enemies move so fast etc? like I felt there were a lot of controls to issue quickly, that can be a good element sometimes to add to the pressure, but i did feel initially with no tutorial this was quite a barrier to "getting into" the game.

I found the lack of sound a shame, but i think thats a thing a lot of people struggle with in such a short timeframe so understandable.

I liked the lighting effects to enhance the graphics and atmosphere though!

congrats on the jam!

Sacrival by Rewzu 2018-12-31T00:06:10Z

@rewzu - sorry ^^;; didnt mean that it wasnt a 48hr compo game, i just use "Jam" as in the wider "game-jam" term, but yeah - totally appreciate it was made in 48 hours and a very good game considering this! just observations for future additions to it if you were to carry on - I definitely had fun playing it though :)

Trials of K'zhak by DrEvilBrain 2018-12-30T22:18:05Z

Hey!

congrats on making your jam game!

I liked the concept, actually its very similar to our arena-game concept with similar sacrifice mechanics! I liked the simple graphics and the cool background and the atmospheric BGM.

I couldnt quite understand how to use the dodge function effectively? I also think some weapon/damage sounds mightve really helped give the attacks more weight? but understand this is tough to do in the timescale given.

I found the difficulty level quite high, this is something we struggled with in ours too, so not sure the exact answer to that :)

Island by rgrem 2018-12-28T13:25:52Z

Good for trying and for uploading even if you didnt achieve everything you wanted to.

In theory the concept and gameplay should work well, however there was not enough guidance in the game itself so I fell into a pitfall first few days - I was "checking" the action I wanted but instead of clicking "confirm" I was clicking the next person along and thinking the action was saved. Initially I didnt realise the failure was from not clicking confirm (thought it might be "random chance" of success on actions). but once I realised this i had more luck - though clicking confirm each time seemed a bit laborious? I prefer the instant click like the eating menu had.

Not 100% how the theme was interpreted in the game though? as there wasnt an obvious sacrifice to me? I felt like losing a person wouldnt make it any easier to survive because you need them all doing different actions etc

Some simple animation or just sound effects on actions wouldve made a big difference, however I appreciate that you acknowledge not finishing everything.

Dont be discouraged! It is something we struggled with on our game too. Maybe next jam you could focus down to fewer mechanics and get the overall polish finished first, then try to add extras in?

No Step Back by Zetorama 2018-12-30T23:59:31Z

Really cool and different take on the bullet hell kind of game! I enjoyed the appearance and sound effects - I think the mechanic was really interesting and it was challenging trying to get as many people as you could as far forward to give you a fighting chance at reaching the end! It was a cool take on the theme too, as eventually you have to accept you will lose one guy to push another forward etc.

I did think it was a bit hard understand the first time you play it, but once you work out the movement and that the Xs mark the steps then you get into it alot more.

well done a good jam game!

Endless Nungeon by Haustgeirr 2018-12-30T22:22:25Z

@lilkrit I think that is a good point - I think this is probably my fault as I was learning animation for the first time when making the sprites for the game. I wouldve liked to do more complex animation and that couldve included a wind-up for them attacking, but I only managed to make something very simple that we had to use for all the attack types.

Endless Nungeon by Haustgeirr 2018-12-30T22:59:40Z

@sevkron thanks for rating! thats interesting to hear - we've had feedback from people who sacrifice every time to win so its interesting to hear the opposite!

@neato theres been a lot of feedback about not seeing the pickup - part of our design was that its a bit like a puzzle and you learn by playing what the best sacrifices for you to make are etc - but interesting to hear how you felt!

Endless Nungeon by Haustgeirr 2018-12-31T09:57:47Z

@mouthlessgames thank you for playing and for the kind feedback! Glad you enjoyed our entry :) The pixel stuff was made in Aseprite and the particle effects were made in Unity

Human Meat Is Very Nourishing by Rolly 2018-12-28T12:34:32Z

♫Shoot them in the brains if you want to live ♫ shoot them in the brains - even the little kids!♫

I really enjoyed this game concept, thought it was funny and took a light hearted jab at itself as a jam game with limitations.

The gameplay was solid and the idea of eating your companions to stay alive really fit the theme.

However it wasnt clear to me what would happen if the zombies hit the car (I assumed it would be bad, but I wasnt sure if it would game over if they hit the car or just if they killed us).

Also the choices seemed a bit like you would always naturally sacrifice the kid and the thirst-trap and end up on a bro-ride with the neighbour because he has the best stats. I think maybe if you were in control of where they were placed each round it might make it more viable to keep the weaker people alive? (I always lost them if they were on the opposite side of the car to me). More variety in the map texture mightve been nice too but imagine this was just the time restraint!

On the whole well done and fun though :)

Pyramid sacrifice by luker128 2018-12-28T12:57:44Z

A nice climbing puzzle - the game escalates quickly which is fun. The graphics are cute and make it obvious that you gotta climb up to the top of the pyramid tot he altar, what to avoid etc without the need for a guide.

Once I reached the top the ending was funny, but then my screen just stayed red forever? It wouldve been good if it gave the option to replay.

PeonCraft - Sacrificed by Kornel Meszaros 2018-12-31T00:20:55Z

Overall this is great - I like the graphics and the sound effects and the overall atmosphere. I like the RTS spoof and humour of the concept too. I liked how you see the world procedurally continue after you make the objectives (like when you scout a tower, you later see your allies attacking it).

my only real criticism is I would sometimes die without understanding why? like i wouldnt see/know what killed me (could just be my bad skill though!), but this was minor as part of the game is dying as a peon! :id:

Good job!

Old Ways by Esosek 2018-12-28T12:06:07Z

Its a nice gameplay concept and well executed.

Alternative way of interpreting the theme rather than making it a mechanic. I liked the humour of the theme and the sound effect when you have loads of enemies chasing you.

Think there couldve been a few more "flavour" pieces or obstacles on the terrain to make it less of a plain open field, but the gameplay makes up for this a bit with the slightly floaty turning which adds more challenge.

Leave Them Behind by RedE 2018-12-30T23:15:54Z

This is interesting and I think using the kind of swing and climb mechanics is quite cool to see in a jam game.

I do think some audio would go a long way to improving the atmosphere of the game but I get that its hard to achieve everything in the jam timescale!
