LD42 — Running out of space

Spatris by thebmxeur 2018-08-18T09:21:36Z

I think you got a really cool idea!

I do like the song but it can get a bit repetitive and hearing that it's your first time recording, I think you did a pretty good job! The only thing you need to do is just learn how to mix the sounds well and you got a pretty good track!

I liked how you could get a line cleared both horizontally and vertically, that was a nice touch. Though like @riccardo-sioni said, a tutorial or even an instructions menu would be good. In fact, I think you really need a menu here in general as starting the game and it's like outta the frying pan, into the fire. A Pause button would be good as well. While I do appreciate you putting me right where into the action, some build up would be nice. Like slow down there, buy me dinner first :joy:

Overall, really cool!

Disco Lovers by Hishicorne 2018-08-14T10:43:25Z

This is a really complex game for sure! Didn't think the city-builder approach could work but hey I can be proven wrong haha

This is a kinda silly game but I do appreciate it! Would love to see this sorta thing be expanded towards other scenarios like a police inspection and what not but I am afraid of the whole Complexity Vs Depth in regards to city-builders. I can't say either how it works with the theme as it seems like you have kinda infinite space? Maybe limit the amount of space in the beginning and whatnot, just some ideas.

I think it's a pretty good standalone game with a strong visual identity! Would love to see this expanded further!

Disco Lovers by Hishicorne 2018-08-14T13:41:33Z

@hishicorne Ah That makes a bit more sense haha I agree it could be a bit more obvious but I think it's still something of merit! Keep up the good work my friend!

Rainforest by SimoGecko 2018-08-18T09:07:21Z

The art got me right away and the gameplay even more so! The 3D artstyle is very cute and simplistic and the colours are very nice! The game controls very well as well and the collision detection is spot on. Overall very good entry to the game and solid take on the theme!

Zachary's Memory by namnam 2018-08-15T14:57:15Z

WooWWWW!!

I really loved this game! I don't usually play these games but this is definitely something amazing! It had a bittersweet atmosphere, it was easy to play, and the writing of the stories was absolutely superb. The art is quite amazing as well, the amount of detail is astonishing. A few spelling errors here and there in the text but definitely something you can fix quite easily.

Just a solid package, well done! You should be proud!! :sob:

Protocol: 47 - Superstar Appeal by Poffle 2018-08-14T09:55:15Z

This one really caught me off guard. :joy: I really did enjoy the graphics and the music is very good and I really also enjoy the humour and the setup for the entire game. Though this game kinda does kinda suffer from the whole "you input answer, and you get something completely different" problem but it feels like a nitpick in the grand scheme of things. Overall, fun(ny) game, good job!

Finger Noodles by vfabien21 2018-08-14T09:26:09Z

The moment I saw the cool af icon, I knew this was going to be something and I'm fortunate to say that it is.

This is really a fun game and I can really see how it can be a party game with a bunch of people! I do feel @catchthefloaty though in that the instructions might have been a little unclear and that the UI/UX could use some work.

Overall, super fun game and I've read that you @vfabien21 will rework it post jam so it'll be interesting to see what a bit of polish can do!

Finger Noodles by vfabien21 2018-08-14T10:29:10Z

@vfabien21 I feel like you could literally just change the text font into a better one and you have a much better presentation. Definitely get those pictures to work!

Now look here, I'm not pointy McShooty kinda person. I'm not too fond of the genre myself so this is going to be biased but this is a pretty strong entry.

You got a really strong combination of 3D and 2D, very DOOM-like and I can always love the pixel

A E S T H E T I C .

I had to get used to the controls a little and had to turn up the sensitivity of my mouse in the options, to which I gotta say, is a lovely addition. Now, I'm not disabled, I just need some rims to see things far away but usually when you make games for Game Jams, accessibility isn't exactly in your top priority so I really do appreciate how you put the time and effort into something so small yet with rippling effects. I may needed a bit of it but you bet someone out there appreciates it A LOT even if it's a smol folk.

Now my only gripes with this is that, the neon colours kinda clash and it kinda gave me a bit of a headache. Add DOOM-like controls you got a recipe for motion-sickness right there. I do also have to agree with @shinysteel here in that I couldn't tell very well about the space running out. Though again, again, not a shooty madooty, so maybe it's just me ya know? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Overall, as someone who doesn't play FPSs and Shooters person, I can see why this would be really fun and you have a solid entry here! Good job!

MoodFood by DosWosh 2018-08-14T09:06:55Z

@swampinpunk182 Eyo! I'm surprised you I got a reply this quickly haha And ah, that makes more sense! I do think this game is very challenging though, couldn't even survive for more than 20 secs haha Still very good! :thumbsup_tone5:

Ultimate Furniture Stacker X-Treme by Norris Eldridge 2018-08-18T08:35:14Z

I really like the retro-aesthetic of the game. The Audio and Visuals are pretty nice!

My only problem with the game is that the controls were a little weird for me. Like I guess you can say that it's part of the game and that it's meant to be kinda finicky and infuriating and challenging but it's a very fine line that you tread I think.

Like I Am Bread has tight controls, it's the well-designed mechanics that makes it infuriating. QWOP has tight controls but it's infuriating because of how finicky the ragdoll is. While here using the mouse to turn is a 3D isometric game is a little off for me. If you want to make rotating also abit of a challenge, I'd rather you used tank controls or car controls in this instance.

Overall, it's a pretty solid game, in my opinion!

BulletJam by C.Even 2018-08-18T08:45:50Z

Wowie, this is a pretty good entry!

I really liked how the more you shot the more space you actually took up and how that plays into the gameplay. The game runs quite well, with really cool art and really tight controls. The only problem I have is that I couldn't pick up the bombs for some reason? Either way, something you can quite easily fix and then all you need is some some sfx and some music and you got a solid entry.

Well done my dood!

Dr.Helper by zlou_kote 2018-08-14T08:18:24Z

I love the humour and the amount of character in the game! Everything in the game is very uniform from not just visuals but also sound and i enjoy some of the references that pop up haha. As @roy-berardo said, the setup is very good!

Unfortunately I'll have to agree with @roy-berado as well in that I can't say I had fun with the game because I literally didn't know what to do after activating it. I know I'm supposed to do something with this text file that appears but I couldn't think of anything. I know this is a puzzle game and maybe I'm just an idiot but I didn't know what to do with the text file or how to get to the passcode. I clicked on Dr. Helper but he wasn't much help. :( I feel like in this situation, some clearer and/or more hints would help? Or just any sort of direction would really be appreciated.

All in all, I can't give it an overall good rating because I couldn't play much of the game but from what I have played, it was very well made! An interesting take on the theme for sure I think!

Dr.Helper by zlou_kote 2018-08-14T10:24:07Z

@zlou-kote Heyo, thank you! I've figured that you're supposed to reverse the text but I just had a bit of kerfuffle with how it would work on a technical kinda way. I probs should have prefaced that haha!

That being said, I downloaded the new version and I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN YOU SCOUNDRELS Y O U F O U L B E A S T S.

I really love the game, changed the rating! :D

Clot! by Ghoster 2018-08-18T08:53:07Z

I gotta say this is pretty good! The audio and the graphics are simple yet effective, well done! I had quite a bit of fun with this one. The only thing I can say is that I'd love a bit more HP. 3 Strikes and you're out but the 1HitKO does provide a bit of pressure into the game. Well done man!

Verdurous Harmony by Buddaccio 2018-08-15T14:01:58Z

Heyo, the game is pretty fun! I don't play a lot of bullet hells so this was very fun! I really liked how tight the controls are as well and the graphics were quite nice!

My only gripe is that the enemies do kinda blend with the BG like @josh-klecka said. I'd recommened you you do a bit of contrast such as making the BG a bit more unsaturated while the enemies are more saturated so that they pop out.

And as @wetbox also said, because there's no invulnerability, you'll more likely to die on the next hit the second you are spawned especially as it's a 1 Hit KO. This is just a personal preference but I'd much rather I had a bar of health or the three hearts instead of the 1 hit but adding a vulnerability would really help on a fundamental level.

I'm pretty impressed as this is your first game and Ludum Dare, I'm very proud of you my dood!

Blood Worm by Rido 2018-08-14T09:04:24Z

I'll have to be honest with you: I'm not so sure about this game.

Maybe it's just my internet but it's pretty slow and choppy which doesn't work with the controls well as it uses constant velocity. The sound compression isn't very good either. I know that the dark light around it is supposed to obscure the player's vision and thus put difficulty but this kinda adds up. The only saving grace with this game is that it's very quick to replay which is also pretty sad because it's clearly meant to be an arcade game that you play over and over again.

It's a good attempt, it's just the technicalities kinda add up and tell you what: if you export a stable EXE offline build and upload it, I'm willing to review this game again. Cheers!

Blood Worm by Rido 2018-08-14T09:14:04Z

@rido Well for a first Ludum, you've definitely got something going on here! If there's one thing a lot of gamedevs fail at, it's scope and you learned that your scope was not the right size. You learn something new everyday no?

The Fall of Arcology ONE by amkingTRP 2018-08-13T21:10:09Z

Link is dead for me too my dood! The art looks very nice and interesting, i do hope you fix it soon!

Castle Z by Erick Alves 2018-08-15T14:23:46Z

I think this game has a pretty interesting concept! It did however take a bit for me to understand the idea of the game so maybe that's something to consider. Another thing as well is that every time I restart, the music restarts as well. Probably not something you want to do especially since this is a game where you'll be restarting a LOT. It doesn't fit with the theme very well but I can see the parallels.

Overall, it's a good shot!

Microbiota Panic by hanin 2018-08-14T21:07:54Z

@vfabien21 Well, the point is to stay alive as a good chunk of the gut flora (true fact) is flushed away every time we poop. That being said, I don't blame you and I think your assumption is very fair lol I can also see that we should have made the goal of the game a bit more clearer.

@zlou-kote @hishicorne It's interesting how you both felt about the screen shaking. I didn't connect that it could cause a headache, that's definitely an option change to think about and also intriguing on how you thought it was disturbing. I mean I guess we are in the stomach

@seannewman22 Yeah, I can see why the music might be a little off. We were trying to aim for the sorta Dr. Mario vibe but it didn't land very well on that front. Definitely something we should improve on! @nenas Yeah, definitely something to consider as well!

I'm very happy you all found the game fun to play! We try to put a lot of love and care into these sorts of things and I'm glad it worked out well. This is also our first Ludum Dare as Cyberjack Studios so we're all extra happy! Would definitely think about jamming again haha

Microbiota Panic by hanin 2018-08-16T07:29:48Z

@namnam I think those are pretty fair complaints if you ask me! An upgrade on the UI and a small expo on how to play the game is warranted and would definitely help make the game better. Thanks for the music tip as well! We'll try to using different wave sounds when making some tunes. I'm glad you liked the game overall and thank you for the critique! :ok_hand:

Edit: I meant you @poffle sorry haha

Microbiota Panic by hanin 2018-08-16T21:48:22Z

@namnam right thank you! @poffle

DataSkream by Sollara Games 2018-08-15T14:12:28Z

This is a pretty neat game! It's interesting how you made the blocks fit with the theme!

It's also pretty responsive with the buttons even on the keyboard so I'm happy with that. The visuals are nice which is one of my concerns as this uses neon colours and I'm glad that they don't hurt my eyes and audio is bumpin' as well.

My only issue is the controls on the keyboard. While I am aware that it is best played on the controller, I don't have one and the WASD plus Spacebar is a little bit awkward for me. I'd maybe consider extra movement options such as using the Arrows Keys and have Space. I know Unity provides secondary inputs and controls but I do think this is something you should advertise as well. I'd also prefer if the jumping was a bit tighter as this is a platformer but you could argue that it's part of the challenge so I could just be nitpicking here haha.

Overall, really good entry, I really enjoyed it!
