LD28 — You Only Get One

Fire Damp by uprightpath 2013-12-31T15:13:00

I liked it! It definitely needs more work, though. As you already know, the win condition needs to be implemented.

My Boxy Friend by TheH 2013-12-31T15:23:00

I too get the same error mentioned before.
It was really fun, if a little slow at times! It wasn't very complex, but it still felt puzzling. Though some of the puzzles and their elements either didn't seem to do anything, or worked fine by themselves.
The physics could use some work: I had to use and abuse the "wall-jump" to get on the top platform on the top-rightmost section. Other than that, Boxy Friend spazzes out if you're carrying it and bump into a wall, but it's fine.
...The ending gave me flashbacks to Portal, though. You bugger! ;)

Soup Kitchen by hardycore 2013-12-24T20:17:00

It's quite difficult, but mostly only if you're really anxious, so for the most part, restarting is the player's fault. Except for the brown squares that show up. I don't get those, are they random? If so, it's super unfair, because you're never fast enough to dodge them should they choose to go your way.
As for the audio, the failure clip was a nice surprise... the first time around. It got annoying really fast, and at one point, I kept failing over and over near the start, and the sound clip kept overlapping itself, making a very loud and jarring noise.
The graphics are minimalistic, which is fine, but even very silly drawings would probably make it better. I say this mostly because it clashes with the detailed walls. At the very least, the water (I'm assuming?) could have some light blue ~ripples~; I think it'd be nice.
I liked the idea a fair bit, and the menus when quitting were nice, but the overall game needed more polish.

YOGO (You only get one) by mohammad 2013-12-24T20:20:00

There doesn't seem to be any executable to download, and I've never seen any of the other extensions before.

Carry the one by goerp 2013-12-24T21:01:00

I really liked the concept! But some things were poorly made...
For one thing, I can see moving works by the key's operative system repeat rate, which is kinda funny, and also a nightmare for people who have an insanely high repeat rate (looking at J).
It took a bit to realize how to get through the first level with a blackboard, as the tilde really threw me off; it should just be a dash instead, and that way I'd get right away it was a minus.
Still, the worst problem was on level 4, that's just too tall for my screen to display. Once I teleported to the bottom, I couldn't see myself.
Other than that, the mood is very puzzle-game-like, and I'm sure it could've been a real brain twister for the math enthusiasts out there, if it had more rooms.
Finally, pressing R to restart would've been nice.

Hero of Tower by Threef 2013-12-24T20:50:00

It's fun to play around in, and the wall flip is very satisfying. Seeing each level is also pretty nice, gives you something to look forward to when you complete a level.
Although some levels can't be completed (can't jump high enough to jump over the spikes in any way), and the X, C and P powerups are kinda distracting.

Monorail by AaronGordon 2013-12-18T00:15:00

It doesn't seem to clear the screen after every frame here. This causes the game to bleed out, and after some seconds, a lot of the screen is white, which makes it hard to see! I'm using Windows 7, 64-bit. It must have something to do with these errors the console reports:

(...)\one\monorail\ld28-gdx-desktop>"C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\java" -cp "..\ld28-gdx\libs\bloom.jar;..\ld28-gdx-desktop\bin;..\ld28-gdx-desktop\libs\gdx-backend-lwjgl.jar;..\ld28-gdx-desktop\libs\gdx-backend-lwjgl-natives.jar;..\ld28-gdx-desktop\libs\gdx-natives.jar;..\ld28-gdx\bin;..\ld28-gdx\libs\gdx.jar" uk.co.alynn.one.Main
The system cannot find the path specified.

...My Java isn't installed on Program Files (x86), I chose a custom path to install my Java to. Oh well, looks nice, and I wanted to give it a try, to see how challenging the later levels would become, but...

One Ship Troopers by frogmaster 2014-01-06T15:18:00

Nice take on the theme. It falls a bit short in terms of gameplay, but it's a very nice idea!
I agree with lincore, the asteroids could have smaller hitboxes, or be smaller entirely.

Snowball Carnage by Moist 2013-12-19T21:27:00

That was really fun to play! There's a strategic element, but also a random one. Hitting others with snowballs and counter-attacking their missed shots is really satisfying.

Rude Bear Resurrection by Alex Rose 2013-12-20T11:29:00

Just to point out that I fixed the link on my game.
Say, yours looks pretty nice as well. I want to play it too, but first, I need to finish waking up entirely...

Rude Bear Resurrection by Alex Rose 2013-12-21T22:21:00

The hitboxes could use some work... I've died from touching literally nothing, just walljumping, three times. And at other times, I died from touching the first laser, that clearly didn't hit me.
Also the guard could zip it after a while and just open the gate already. Maybe make it so your fairy companion could burn down the gate if you click on it, for those who are in a hurry to try again.
Other than that, I really liked the entire thing.

Dangerous TGA (to go alone) by junt74 2014-01-06T15:31:00

It has a nice style and idea, though it could've matched the theme better; I mean, you can quickly go back into the cave and get another item, so it defeats the purpose a bit. But it did feel nice to play, and, despite not having many items, it was still diverse. Just as a final point, I'd like it if the character moved slightly faster. Oh, and because of keyboard key locking, going down, right and holding a stick is impossible... Maybe mirror the main key to the likes of X and Z next time, so that people who are having trouble with the aforementioned combo, or just people who like X/Z better can use those keys.

Lost in Puzzle by ayame9joe 2013-12-31T15:02:00

The controls and graphics could be smoother... Other than that, it's pretty basic, but I like how it relates to the theme.

YOGOSWAG by Super Hamster 2013-12-24T20:33:00

It's neat, but it's very clearly based on Cookie Clicker, to the point where it doesn't really go beyond that. The graphics are pretty YOLOtastic, but I wish the font wasn't just an aliased Arial.

One Wing by theholychicken 2013-12-19T21:47:00

Super short, but so so lovely. I love how you get the alternate ending. It's so obvious, and it's a thing most people'll get right away (not like there's much you can do in the game other than backflipping and walking right), but it still makes sense and is well done.

Pinpoint by Brainless Games 2014-01-06T15:40:00

It was fun, and a nice concept, but way too short... You could've done something better with the theme, I mean, snipers normally only get one shot anyway, after that, the people are alerted and scatter.

One Pixel Games by plancien 2014-01-06T15:08:00

Loved it! I had no idea what expected me, I mean, what kind of games would work on a 1x1 canvas? But you sure showed me wrong. I'm not exactly sure of what I did on the third game, but I eventually won. Great adaptation to the theme, straight to the point, and the games themselves aren't half bad!

You Only Get One Direction by Techblogogy 2013-12-19T21:12:00

The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to yadda yadda.

Using Windows 7, 64-bit.

In a maze with one by okmmjyygv 2014-01-04T17:58:00

It's not a bad idea, but it needs some work. Travelling through the maze gets dull really quickly, and the movement could be smoother than it is (specially when trying to enter a perpendicular path).
The music, minimalistic as it may be, was nice. There's one critical thing missing: the number of uses you have left on your item. I liked that you showed the item on the corner, it was a nice touch, but without the number of uses left, it left something to be desired.
Finally, there was a glitch that happened at one point: in 2 consecutive runs, I pressed R to restart, and when I clicked PLAY, it automatically selected the teleportation and teleported me to a spot, using up all my uses in one go.

015873's Prison Break by Rother Games 2014-01-06T17:09:00

It had some potential, but a lot of things went wrong. First off, the music and graphics are assaulting to the ears and eyes. I gathered that you figured you don't have the time or skill to do decent ones, so instead you chose to do horrible ones, for comedy. But it didn't work at all.
The gameplay is confusing to understand at first. And the choices of the items you must pick are pretty much scripted, so it doesn't follow the theme that well.
I liked seeing the ways I had to die, and the ways to complete the game were a bit kooky, but in the end, this needed a big improvement.

Caverns of the Curse of Greed by Espyo 2013-12-19T21:37:00

@sahoskins1 Good thinking. I'm just too used to using 7-zip to make everything as squashed as possible.

@handCraftedRadio You're not the first one to be confused by that, I'm afraid!... I wanted to make death more obvious, but time restrains...

I really should've made the whole item thing more clear, or at least point out some more in-game about the fact that Shift gives item help.

Caverns of the Curse of Greed by Espyo 2013-12-20T11:27:00

Drat! As per my reply to sahoskins1, I decided to compress the game into .zip format, but I never updated the links! Should be good now.

Caverns of the Curse of Greed by Espyo 2013-12-20T16:27:00

@Alex Rose Thanks! The spear looking thing is a zipline. You have to be close to a wall, aim towards another wall, and use it. The drill is a jackhammer meant to destroy blocks above you. I /really/ had to point out the function of the Shift key more... Too late now.

Lobo by BluMist 2014-01-04T18:13:00

From the description, I can see this was meant to be something very different from what it is. But as it is now, I'm afraid it looks like an incomplete game, and with quite a few flaws.
Few screens will ever be able to display this correctly, due to its huge vertical size. The settings didn't seem to do anything, they just took me to an empty maze. The game doesn't match the theme whatsoever, though, again, I can see from the description that the original plans did match.
As for the gameplay, the collisions need some work, and it should be clearer as to what you're doing. As stated before, the brains could be a bit more dynamic in their movement.

Some positive points I can point out include the graphics (is the main character using a sprite from a Final Fantasy game, though?) and the nice music at the start.

The blue present by Ayte 2013-12-31T20:01:00

It's pretty sweet and simple, and I like how it ties in with the theme. Though it was a bit repetitive, and I'd like it more with some changes: if collecting a gift would increase the bullet time, instead of it increasing by itself, I'd actually go after the red gifts. And to complement that, moving the box with the mouse would be nice.

The Collector by Sandcrawler 2013-12-31T20:20:00

I found myself playing this for quite a while. But even after that I still don't quite get the concept. After I became too stuck to progress upwards (are you even forced to go up?), I used my super power thing with the Enter key and got a game over. It was fun while it lasted, but the whole thing's confusing. Next time, you should invest slightly more on making sure everything is well explained.

At The Last Minute by Scrapworks 2014-01-04T18:49:00

1689! Nothing to brag home about, but I didn't optimize my runs as much as I should.
Anyway, this game is excellent! Addictive, good graphics, nice soundtrack, gameplay feels super nice, little details like the encouragement when you die... I only have some minor complaints, but other than that, this game could is by far one of the best I've seen here!
Restarting quickly with the likes of R would be nice. It sucks knowing you don't have enough time to complete it, but you either have to wait for the timer to end, or go to the pause menu, quit, choose play, and skip the cutscene, which is kinda frustrating.
The spikes should have their graphics match their hitboxes better. Most of my deaths came from hitting spikes I shouldn't even have touched.
When you enter a new level, if you're holding a direction, the game will not move that way, unless you release and re-hold. I quickly grew past that, as the grapples are the best way to move, but it was still a bit annoying.
I want to see more from you guys next LD!

Midnight Memories by chameco 2013-12-31T14:55:00

The game leaves you with this feeling of trance... It's complicated but linear at the same time, but once you kinda figure out a way to do stuff, you don't stop until you complete one wave, at least.
It IS a bit hard to get into, though, and I saw myself using the yellow and green lasers more often than I stopped to think about what would be more effective against what.
Final thoughts: I feel like it could've matched the theme more than it did... Also, pressing Escape to quit would be nice.
