LD35 — Shapeshift

Capital Offense by GAFBlizzard 2016-04-18T04:41:00

This was pretty neat and the key mapping at the start was great. I enjoyed that you eased us into using all five, though the enemy units got hectic pretty quickly. Cool idea with a neat style, though the theme doesn't come through all that clearly.

Günther's Abduction by franklyn 2016-04-18T04:17:00

This is a really solid entry! I enjoyed the lighting tricks, the shapeshifting is neat (though kind of minor), and the level was quite large! I liked all the different areas, and the one-shot style of the gun made me plan my shots. It movement was a bit wonky, and the character design was obviously not the highlight of the game, but it was neat! I enjoyed seeing (SPOILERS!) Gunther happily escape at the end. I wasn't quite as big a fan of the music as some others because it didn't seem like quite the right mood for the game, but it was a good effort nonetheless. I would've loved to have heard more than just the firing gun! I enjoyed it overall, though!

Dodge by misson20000 2016-04-18T03:46:00

It worked fine in Chrome for me, for reference. Or maybe it didn't? It ran, but I really couldn't break any of the shapes when shooting them with Z. Occasionally the cleared-out one would break for some reason, but I didn't seem to be involved in that. Maybe I'm just not press Z fast enough, but I can't play more than a few seconds before getting killed. I like what I think the idea and concept are, the music was okay if not a little grating, and the visuals were clean. I just wanted to be able to play more of it!

Dodge by misson20000 2016-04-18T03:57:00

Okay, upon talking with you, I didn't understand the mechanics well enough it seems. Once I knew to step aside after shooting a clear block, I was finally able to progress. I like that the soundtrack picks up as the game expands! It's still too difficult :-P but a MUCH better effort than I initially thought! Score updated to reflect this.

Scrapshaper by the31 2016-04-18T04:05:00

Hey, I enjoyed it! It's one of the more complete games I've played, and it has some neat stuff! I didn't immediately recognize what the huts were, but I'm glad I could use my dead enemies to restore my armor. It's a bit simple, but I enjoyed the combat--the enemies get pretty aggressive when there are squads of them camping out for you. I wish I could shoot a little faster, but it was neat! I liked the sound effects, though the mixing/leveling between them all is a bit off. Really nice work!

Gallery by ToadieTechnika 2016-04-18T05:18:00

Great presentation! The sound was well-made, the smooth animations were great, and the reveal system was alright. It's a shame the core mechanic was something as simple as card-matching, but I like the shape-making thing at the end.

Creased by Cosine 2016-04-19T10:59:00

It's a cool idea, but the wonky controls and no way to undo really hampers the gameplay. The visuals work well enough.

Spooky, Scary Shapes by Tater_hater 2016-04-18T03:40:00

I like the creepy sound effects in the background, and it's great you got something up and running! The shifting maze idea is neat, though I got trapped for a little while a few times. Visually, it was rough, and it, sadly, wasn't a whole ton of fun to play. BUT, the effort put into it is admirable, and there was some neat stuff in it!

Transformagician by HuvaaKoodia 2016-04-19T10:56:00

It was a neat mechanic, though there could be some refining to make it all mesh better. The mood set by the coloring and music were great, though I wasn't a fan of the character art all that much. Neat idea and start!

Lux Anima by Broxxar 2016-04-18T19:15:00

Very nice entry! It was all really smooth and the transitions were quite nice. The filter was a bit too heavy, some sound effects would have been nice, and it's rather unforgiving, but it was still a really nice entry. I liked the music shifting with the gameplay (it was nicely-written as well) and it was a nice aesthetic overall. Great work!

The Ship-Shape Shift by greysphere 2016-04-18T04:51:00

The music in the background was my favorite part, followed by the sound effects. I like the idea of doing different stuff around the ship, and I like that the order and timing of your actions all matter in the later levels. The conflicting art styles/resolutions were offputting, and the gameplay is too slow-paced and uninvolving to be very much fun.

LycanQuest by mactinite 2016-04-18T06:19:00

Nicely done! There are some good mechanics in there and a generally good sense of movement. Combat was decent enough, and the level was nicely put together. The damage effect was great. I would've liked a little smoother combat in human form, the music could use another pass to make it fit better, and the sound effects worked but could use improvement. It was still fun to play, though, even if I wanted more.

SandShifter by nesis 2016-04-20T02:16:00

Neat stuff! It was a cool mechanic (and it took me minute to figure out I was 'storing' volume.) The look of it was cool, though the physics could get a little wonky if you mess around at all.

Generations by Rother Games 2016-04-19T16:57:00

I really liked the graphic style and the general idea. It was kind of neat shifting to different plant types. The music was too repetitive, though, and it wasn't as much fun to play as I'd hoped, but it was still a neat concept. Good work!

Altered Beard by gillenew 2016-04-20T02:33:00

Hah pretty neat. It's got some obvious rough parts, but it's a neat a humorous theme, has some positive gameplay ideas, and a fair challenge. The sound was pretty decent too!

Meepies by broknecho 2016-04-20T02:06:00

Nice job! It took me a minute to figure out what I was doing--the movable and non-movable objects are hard to recognize at first glance--but I had a lot of fun getting all the way through it. Heck of a difficulty jump between level two and three ;-)

Were with Awwww by UncleChris 2016-04-18T05:43:00

Time running out is a bummer, but the generated-ness of it all is impressive. It's nice there are some sound effects, though that could, of course, be improved. The environment art is quite nice, but the character art is a letdown. Well, the cat's cute. So it's a solid start, and I'd love to see how far you could get with more time!

SoundShape by QuiZr 2016-04-18T03:32:00

Hey, I enjoyed it! It took a round or two to figure out what I was doing, but after that it was fine! I got a score of 96 while playing, and great job for five hours. Critique-wise, sometimes sounds get covered up making it quite tough to get the next one right, and it'd be cool if it sped up over time or had some form of progression. As-is, though? Neat effort and something to show for five hours of work!

Cloudy by Karl Schmidt 2016-04-18T06:06:00

I like the idea of splitting the clouds to hit multiple buttons, but that, unfortunately, meant having to replay much of the level to get each piece there. That made what could have been interesting kind of boring. Visually, it was nice. I liked the visuals overall (aside from camera clipping), and the game controlled nicely. I'm not quite sure what you were going for with the sound, but the tooltips were a nice touch. Nice start!

Legend of the Bucca by A Little Red Panda 2016-04-20T01:52:00

The look is gorgeous, the writing is nice. I didn't really see the theme and the mechanics could use some love, but it sets a mood wonderfully!

Potholing by pss 2016-04-19T16:52:00

Pretty neat little game! The controls could use a little refining to make it more intuitive to get around, but it was fun nonetheless!

Shapeful World by Jigosystems 2016-04-20T02:29:00

This was really nice low-poly art and the moving clouds were a nice touch. Obviously there wasn't a whole lot else to it all, but you made a nice environment so thanks for that!

Entropy by Steven Miller 2016-04-18T04:34:00

This is a really impressive entry! The writing was nice, though a little long-winded (and some leaps in logic, of course), and I'm impressed you made a full intro cutscene! The gameplay was well-done and speedy. I liked the enemy types, though many of them seemed pretty similar. There was a lot of content, solid controls, a consistent and pretty nice visual style, and really good sound effects. The music seemed fine for the intro, but it didn't fit the gameplay all that well. I liked the shapeshifting mechanic to turn into a gun, and that animation for the change is lovely. Very nice work overall! Great job!

TowerTopple by kepons 2016-04-18T19:23:00

Wow, what a great entry! The visuals were really nice, it was a really cool and fun gameplay hook, it plays nicely and escalates at a nice pace, and it seems pretty well-polished. Sometimes the block drops seemed a little unpredictable, but that didn't really negatively affect how enjoyable it was very much. Great idea and execution.

Space supplies by TinoR 2016-04-20T02:25:00

It would've been awesome if you'd gotten some gameplay in, but it's neat switching between the animals and roaming around for a few minutes. Great work!

Stranded on Planet Shiftos by Thirsty 2016-04-20T01:56:00

It wasn't immediately clear to go through the things on the side instead of going straight in for the boss, but it was a neat game. Nothing like I was expecting from the intro, but neat anyways! It was rather difficult--I died a lot, but that's alright.

Tito's Revenge by brinkhousegames 2016-04-18T05:49:00

This is a visual and auditory treat for a 48-hour jam (though there seemed to be a touch of clipping on the shoot sound). The damage effect was great, the environment was neat, and the audio was really nice overall. Great job on the banjo music. The vacuum was a neat idea, though could be smoothed out, and the overall gameplay is pretty basic, but it's polished. Very nice work, though the visuals and audio outclassed the mechanics.

Shieft by nicso 2016-04-19T10:49:00

Really great idea! It was very well executed, the map-switching was nice (though I found a bug or two), I liked the music, and the visuals were nice overall. I wasn't a fan of the player art, but the rest was nice enough to make up for it. Great work.

Haywire by VividRedemption 2016-04-18T05:33:00

Hah that's a fun little game. I like the audio for it--it's quiet suiting, though I'd love for there to be more of it. My only gripe is I wish the collision was a little more forgiving (or the holes were a tad larger). It could be an issue with the sort of unnatural acceleration/deceleration (do shapes have a natural was to do that?), but still a neat game!

Little Girl by adamprack 2016-04-18T05:55:00

@the31 Thanks! The quick-fall is really useful for ambushing enemies and closing the gap between you and them quickly!

Little Girl by adamprack 2016-04-18T06:29:00

@stephenhaney Thanks a lot! I opted out of all-keyboard because I was afraid of hitting keyboard hardware limits for some users. But, of course, that creates the opposite problem for laptop users. I hope you get a chance to play through it with a mouse!

Little Girl by adamprack 2016-04-21T02:40:00

Thanks everyone so far for all the wonderful comments and feedback!

LightShifter by Hyden 2016-04-18T05:13:00

Very neat! I liked the thought involved in some of these puzzles, though it was a bit obtuse at times. The visuals were neat, though the lack of any shading or texturing made depth a struggle in a few instances. Really neat effort!

Super Shape Maze by Archimagus 2016-04-20T02:19:00

It looked fantastic and is a classic design. It was hard not to notice how much less intuitive it is on a computer than in your hand in real life, and the theme usage is a bit of stretch. That said, it's still a really neat accomplishment for a weekend so well done!

Squarcle by bagface 2016-04-19T10:42:00

Neat idea! It grew on me over time. I wish there'd been a bit more put into the visuals and audio, but it had some neat gameplay and variety.
