Steeb!

Nice job, especially for a first game jam submission ever! I liked the cute sprites and the little victory jingle. Some of the puzzles were a bit tedious, but it is surprisingly satisfying to navigate the Steebs around. An annoying issue I kept having was the mouse leaving the web player and thus messing my control up.

Congrats on your first Ludum Dare. Neat little puzzle game. Having controls listed would be nice, even if it is super simple, took me a bit to realize they follow the mouse.

brotherbrody 2024-10-06 23:36

@paroxysmal understood! Just added control in post description

brotherbrody 2024-10-06 23:36

@dooskington Thanks for playing! And yes, the player window for itch does have that issue

custodi 2024-10-06 23:37

Simple and effectife core mechanic with simple & relaxing level desing. Nice first entry!

kernon 2024-10-06 23:47

Congrats on the submission. This was a really fun little puzzler and I enjoyed it!

Nice little puzzle game with some fun level design, the maze one was maybe a bit on the easy side for when it was in the game. I liked the simple graphics. And it is a clever way to exploit, that pathfinding is hard. :)

Godot it's immediate, without thinking  Good game))

oldtoadpower 2024-10-07 13:32

HAHAHA, what a funny game, I don't know what they eat to sleep like that XD

zz1p 2024-10-07 14:18

Cool!

olddog 2024-10-07 15:00

very funny game!!! love this game so much, this creature and sleep design are so interesting, wish for more level design or more stuff

dashvirus 2024-10-07 20:53

Hey dude ! It's really cool, I like the fact that you took the time to have a good feeling on the controller. I think there is sort of an area of control around the mouse or soemthing, it's well executed I have to admit. It's never frustrating when it could have been ! Also, you probably spent a lot of time on the Level Design, and it's nice, the levels are interesting.

The only few things I'd say that could be improved are the repetitiveness of actions in some levels and the graphics. With a bit of colors and simple decorations here and there, you can make it more attractive for almost no cost ;)

In any case, good job !

Fun puzzles!

peringo 2024-10-08 13:55

Might be my favorite Steeblike in the last 30 years of video game history.

Simplistic, but good simplistic. I like that you tried to do different stuff with the levels. The "prison" type level was the only one I didn't particularly enjoy. Good work!

I really liked this game! It's awesome!

tiberiusuciu 2024-10-08 19:46

Very polished  Level design is well thought out, the progression makes sense! Very well done

jack-d-taylor 2024-10-08 20:45

Very cute puzzle game, very well-polished for a compo entry, great job!

james-tanm 2024-10-08 21:07

Dude, I was literally just saying to my friend how the steeb genre has been stagnating lately, and lo and behold we get a new steeblike!

The positives - Great art. I love their little steebutts - Solid concept. The controls were fun to get used to, but it all felt very natural once you got up to speed - The sound design is minimalistic, but very fitting. it all flowed well together, and fit the art style quite well - I liked the puzzles, especially the 453 puzzle. was a good challenge to try to get them stuck so they couldnt interfere with each other.

What could be improved: - honestly, not much. I think this was a fantastic scope for a game jam that was really well executed. Maybe some music would have been nice on the longer levels, but all in all this is a pretty dope ass game. Best game of the compo ive played so far

brotherbrody 2024-10-08 21:31

@peringo @james-tanm Thanks to both of you for the praise and critiques! And for playing into my steeb-like joke

imberny 2024-10-09 01:56

I liked this more than I thought I would! Navigating the steebs around was a little frustrating at times, but I think it's also part of the charm. Good work!

I've never played a steeblike before (I only play stevelikes), so I certainly didn't expect steeb to look like that from the thumbnail at the top of the page. It was fun controlling all the characters at the same time and figuring out how to get them where they needed to go.

I thought the earlier stages were stronger than the later stages. First several introduced new concepts to solve one at a time, while the later stages mostly reused the same concepts without introducing new puzzles. Still fun to drag steebs around the room either way.

brotherbrody 2024-10-10 06:17

@sudocoffee Thanks for stepping out of your comfort zone to try my game! I know that takes a lot of willpower so be sure to rest up.

And yes, I was nearing the submission time as I was designing levels so some had more inspiration than others. I wanted to make sure I had enough time to iron out any problems with the submission since I had never done it for Ludum Dare or on itch.io before

Very nice game, especially for a first LD! Quite a fair amount of levels too, though a couple of them around the middle felt a bit samey. I liked the spritework and graphic style, though as a godot tip (not grading this against you, just wanted to let you know) you can disable anti-aliasing in Labels and set the filter in CanvasItem->Texture to Nearest in the main Node2D parent, this will help you get more of a pixel perfect look without much effort!

I really love the godot engine, and I hope you had fun making this submission. I certainly did playing it!

Very nice puzzle game. I think if upgrade graphics, it should be in store.

tetrergeru 2024-10-10 19:40

Great puzzle! Only thing that's missing is some backgroung soundtrack :musical_note:

samuel-fine 2024-10-12 14:36

This is really impressive for a Compo game! The mouse-following mechanic is the sort of thing that could very easily go wrong. If the Steebs were too quick, they'd be uncontrollable; if they were too slow, it'd feel really sluggish. You managed to thread that needle perfectly for this, I never felt like I couldn't solve a puzzle because of the controls. Fantastic work!

nanolotl 2024-10-14 13:07

Everything about this was super well done, from the controls, to the booty while eating, and the jaunty tune when you win.

tinykidtoo 2024-10-16 06:37

Clever, I found each puzzle was just the right amount of challenge never too much, but made me think each time. Great job!

honey-pony 2024-10-18 19:05

Cool little game!

One thing I found interesting is that several of the puzzles were more tedium than logically difficult. I think this was actually a pretty good choice. It really made it feel like navigating a horde of tiny guys rather than, say, "exactly as many as the puzzle needs," which seems very thematically strong.

In particular, there was something satisfying about just beating the levels even if they weren't strictly speaking difficult. A good example of this is the maze level. I still enjoyed beating it even though there was no real puzzle.

I think one reason the steebs are satisfying to navigate is because there is a surprising amount of local control. This is partially due to the puzzle design helping hook steebs into helpful places, but also because the mouse pointer can change most quickly near the steebs that it is right next to. This lets you navigate the nearby steebs with a lot of control while the faraway ones can't really change what they're doing too much.

One extra bit of fun was I would always try to get all the steebs to be eating their food at once. This was actually pretty difficult and I never succeeded, but it was fun to have them all rush in to the final area nonetheless.

I liked the little jingle at the end of each level quite a bit.
