This is wild how did you even make it look like that? I keep getting "failed at 1% of the way" at the start but I can still move around for a while? Not sure what I'm supposed to be doing but I love the trippy visuals

demure 2023-05-01 10:48

@peterfiftyfour Thanks, wild was what I was going for! It shows the result of your previous run when you restart, perhaps that's what you're seeing? Also totally possible there's a bug there, didn't have much time for testing sadly!

I ran all of the footage through an old composite video mixer and recorded bits of an oscilloscope reacting to the music to a betamax recorder. I mixed the original footage with the signal coming out of the video mixer to create feedback patterns which serve as the background for the game which is laid on top. The frame buffer is never cleared, creating further feedback effects when rendering the original betamax videos to the game's background.

Thanks for playing!

Crashes all of the browser tabs I try to load it in - tried safari, firefox, and chrome on mac :( unfortunate because the aesthetic looks awesome!

kgurniak91 2023-05-01 11:10

It's like super hexagon mixed with rez infinite but easier and more trippy. Very nice music that fits the visuals.

dzejpi 2023-05-01 11:27

WOW, this is absolutely incredible! Visuals and sounds are just amazing and mesmerising. And when I read what did you have to do in order to make them, then I have to say that you are very creative and clever.

I am also surprised that this well looking game runs in HTML5. Great job here!

demure 2023-05-01 12:04

@jdah That's too bad! I've used Godot 4.0.1 for this, but it's browser compatibility is not quite what it used to be in Godot 3.0, I've already noticed it doesn't run in every browser. I'd have uploaded a desktop version but ran out of time, sorry! Thanks for trying.

@kgurniak91 Definitely some heavy inspiration from those :)

@dzejpi The game itself is actually very simple, the complexity of the visuals are mostly down to the video files played in the background! So as long as the video runs, there's no extra overhead necessary for heavy visual effects. Thanks for playing!

notnasiul 2023-05-01 12:40

I don't remember my Betamax videos being this trippy, but it's been a while! I ended up failing at 38%! Clever use of video footage to add a lot of mood. Nice!

theguy 2023-05-01 12:56

The visuals are amazing. It feels like a weird mix of a dream, a trip and an arcade game. The audio just makes it better.

Nice game!

Pretty well-made, but. The gameplay elements are sometimes downright impossible to distinguish. The restart is VERY slow. You have to sit though an opening every time you die. A game like this should have an instant restart.

I simply cannot believe how incredible this game looks. That intro was worth watching through every time, though it did make it hard to replay and improve my score. If you'd like, you can rewatch the stream here;

hagamosvideojuegos 2023-05-07 20:49

Your game was really enjoyable, it was original and a mix of elements from games that I really like, but done in a unique way. The only thing I think it's missing is the theme of the jam, but everything else was fantastic.

Congratulations!

ausstein 2023-05-07 21:52

Thank you so much for dropping by My stream! I really enjoyed the game :)

mreliptik 2023-05-07 21:58

The concept is simple but well executed. The visuals caught me and I'm honestly very impressed. Knowing how you created them makes me enjoy it even more. I think it could be awesome for an horror game. I can't wait to see what you can come up with using this technique. Huge congrats for youe entry

Very interesting graphics and style on this one, stands out with it. Quite the trip I must say, the game-play was quite satisfying too, though I wish there was a bit more to it. Jolly awesome game though!

geckoo1337 2023-05-08 20:28

What a great game with an astonishing visual - for a gameplay which reminds me of SuperHexagon. Maybe it is a little bit too weird. You should find a correct balance with the graphics. Thank you for this weird experience. I had fun playing. Do you really think that it fits with the theme? I wish you the best ++

aurel300 2023-05-10 22:43

It looks neat… But it is a bit too chaotic at times, I think. It is frustrating to die because the game is blurring, blooming, and post-processing the screen to the point of not being able to tell where you are or where the walls are. So as a game, although I tried it a bunch of times, it was not as much fun as it could be with a couple of small tweaks: the player should move faster, be more responsive; the bounces could be reduced a bit; it happened too often that I got stuck in between walls and could not really do much. (Of course not seeing anything just makes this more annoying.) The shapes that spin very fast are especially difficult to deal with. Sometimes it's possible to cheese the game and warp through walls but that doesn't feel great either.

I don't know if this fits the theme because I can't reach the goal (:

Actually I found the music much stronger than the visuals. The track for the title screen is eerie in a good way; I'm sure it reminds me of a movie or something I have heard before, but I can't place it at the moment…

(Edit: I remembered what I was thinking of! The intro to Another World, and more specifically this cover by Master Boot Record (at around 0:50): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPyvLin3n6E)

poshdan 2023-05-18 14:35

What a trippy game! And addictive too! The graphics are fantastic, the music is pumpin', there's a whole vibe here I've never experienced before. My only difficulties would be that the visuals do make it harder to keep track of yourself on screen, and that the shapes coming out of the center can be very unforgiving, often times there's no chance of recovery from a single mistake. That being said, this could very well be part of the design, given that it's a game based around challenge. This is a great compo entry, you should be proud!
