Now this.... Is something I can nut to.

p7153 2022-04-05 06:09

This was a really fun tower defense-type game! It took a few deaths to get the hang of it, but once you get over the learning curve, it's really enjoyable! The game did freeze up for a few minutes between each wave, although I'm not sure if that's an issue with the game or my laptop.

raptor851 2022-04-05 06:11

I like it, but it constantly freezes up at wave 3, controls not exactly ideal for mouse play.

adrien-tremblay 2022-04-05 06:17

@p7153 @raptor851 Thanks for the reviews! Yeah the game does get a bit laggy at the start of each wave. It's a bug :/

jogy34 2022-04-05 06:28

Fun game, it took me a few tries but I eventually started getting the hang of it. Unfortunately in my last run after I got to wave like 10 or 15 or something it all of a sudden crashed on me when trying to move to the next wave. I do wish there was a drag to select because it can be hard to click on enemies at times. It would also be handy to be able to tell the wolves and bears to patrol a certain area.

moooks 2022-04-05 06:32

Cool game, I like your interpretation of the theme. The sound effects are pretty good too. The only thing I would suggest is having the difficulty curve a little higher because when I was playing I noticed that wave 5 really wasn't much harder than wave 1 which makes the game seem a little repetitive. But other then that I think this is a pretty neat game.

hoeleboele 2022-04-05 06:33

Liked the game but unfortunatly it crashed after wave 5 for me. Also the enemies that hide behind the trees are anoying. these are just minor complaints in an otherwise great accomplischment.

boclow 2022-04-05 07:01

I managed to get it work! (This has to be my old computer just not working properly) I liked the game loop and it was easy to figure out what to do. It was fun to play. It unfortunately froze completely on round 9 but I got a good idea of the game by then and to be honest, I was not doing so well by then :) Fun game!

infecsean 2022-04-05 07:14

Very fun game with an interesting concept. great sounds, love the gameplay loop, love the man vs nature theme. Overall very good, except for some minor issues like crashing after wave 5 and people being too small to click on.

teenythanos 2022-04-05 07:52

I am in the same boat as @boclow -- on a desktop and can't get the file running. It brings up the terminal and cites an error, then closes. So, I'm sorry to say I can't review it--I wish I could because it looks SO good!! :slight_frown:

kisilin 2022-04-05 08:41

I had a nice moment playing your game. I realy fell the inevitable aspect of deforestation when the mechanical egine apears, I just start thinking okay I won't beat it and I won't survive this attack. And that's what happens... Nice job

lord-shulky 2022-04-05 12:59

Would love to play it on my Nintendo Switch but I don't have homebrew.

hekateras 2022-04-05 15:09

Such a cute little tower defense game. Fits the theme perfectly, graphics and music are great and balance and gameplay seem really good too. I lasted ten waves before the game froze on me (it lagged a bit each wave spawn so I'm not sure if that was on my end or the game not being optimised)

martenscedric 2022-04-05 15:21

@hekateras the reason why it freezes at each wave is the pathfinding is a bit slow. When we spawn enemies at the beginning of the wave, the game does all the pathfinding in one frame. We were aware of this issue but we didn't have time to fix it as our last few hours were spent maximising the fun of the game.

hekateras 2022-04-05 15:22

Understood, I'll keep an eye out for a post-Jam version :D

hekateras 2022-04-05 15:23

Also, scaring off the loggers with bears is really fun! Though before you can enjoy it for too long, the machines show up. Really nice way of keeping you on your toes.

jivvy 2022-04-05 21:37

Pretty cool game. Making the waves based on time rather than based on enemies remaining can prevent the player from keeping one alive and cheesing

adrien-tremblay 2022-04-05 23:27

@jivvy Good idea. We were thinking of making them based on both (giving waves a time limit). The game is already pretty hard as it is though! haha

superpokeunicorn 2022-04-06 00:15

Pretty neat little strategy game. I like how you have the option to use your workers as combat units, forcing you to choose between defense and resource gathering in the early game. I will say that the interface was a bit finicky; the units were pretty small so it could be hard to click on them. The game also crashed when I got to wave 3. I tried playing again, but it crashed on wave 2 that time. Regardless, I had fun with what I got to play. Nice work!

craig-l 2022-04-06 08:40

Love the idea. Love my bear army.

gdesecrate 2022-04-07 01:51

Game Crashed for me when I was losing. Screenshot 2022-04-07 045028.png Nothing sus in log file.

silverlybee 2022-04-07 02:21

Nice game! Very simple but cute. I do wish it had a menu or a way to restart the game though.

marvis 2022-04-07 18:13

I really liked the graphics, and it was easy for me in the game, I suggest adding complexity

khaotom 2022-04-07 18:23

The machines are so OP. We woodland creatures don't stand a chance. :crying_cat_face: I like this entry. The music gives it an almost whimsical feel despite the life and death situation going on in reality. I wouldn't mind a version of this where you just build up a massive squirrel empire.

timur-bahadir 2022-04-07 18:26

Crashed quite often when waves ended :( But i actually really liked this game. With some polish and more content (and some bug fixing ;)) i could see this as a full release

matif100 2022-04-07 20:03

It was pretty fun and enjoyable game. Only problem i encountered was that i could not click onto some lumberjacks who were hiding beheind a tree, and i could not quickly send an unit to his position

creativ4eg 2022-04-08 14:48

It's really sad game :( Very suitable to jam theme! Nice work, I understand all, but want to grow trees!

corrupt-spaghetti 2022-04-10 12:23

I really liked this game! I was able to get to wave 19 before it crashed.

Some notes: Sometimes the human enemies are stuck behind trees and can't be clicked on. Sometimes the menu gets stuck on the buy screen. A nice quality of life feature could be the ability to queue up actions while the game is paused like in many other RTS games as well as hotkeys for various actions.

Overall great game though!

baubau 2022-04-10 21:39

Fun little game! Took me a while to get how to collect the nuts, but once I did..

bears.jpg

Game freezes for a bit with each wave. Probably during the spawning phase. Some of those lumberjacks can be very stealthy  hard to target behind a tree.

end_game.png -> Wave 23 ! Wohoo

I really enjoyed it.

charq 2022-04-11 01:52

I don't think I got a hang of the game, but I still enjoyed its graphics. The squirrel archers are super cute.

Thank you for sharing your game on my Twitch stream (MsMiaChar). Here's a link to the video (game starts around 02:30:00): https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1446760516

justmars 2022-04-16 21:07

It's always nice to see jam games written more or less from scratch rather than just using Unity or such. The source code of the project seems really clean.

You have a neat little tower defence going on here. Gameplay-wise it all seems to work pretty great. Quality of life improvements would be welcome (like seeing the range of squirrel archers if it is finite + overall balancing), but there is a good base here. Graphics are simple, but effective. The colors fit together really well. Sounds and music are nothing too special, but they add to the experience nonetheless. The application crashed on me at one point, but by then I had already experienced most of the gameplay (I think) so it was no biggie. Very good job overall, keep it up!

winter2277 2022-04-17 14:54

Hey @justmars thanks for the feedback! Did you have the crash on the Less Crashes version or on the Jam version?

madbarron 2022-04-17 16:25

This rules! I think everything works great. I had two issues. The first was figuring out how to go back to the build menu. Clicking the big tree is a good idea, but it just didn't come to me naturally. The other thing was that enemies would hide behind trees so I couldn't target them. Other than that, the game was fun, good looking, had a fitting soundtrack, and fit the theme perfectly! Congrats on a great game.

knatt 2022-04-17 16:48

Very very nice, this game would be right up my ally with some more polish. It would be nice to box select trees so I could assign multiple archers. Also it's super impressive that you got it working on the switch. bravo!

justmars 2022-04-17 16:52

It was the less crashes version @winter2277. I played the game in a Windows 11 ARM virtual machine so that could be why it crashed, although it did work fine up until that point.

rhanzoc 2022-04-17 17:27

Linux version complained about libraries being too short. As a fast workaround I renamed the *.3.0.0 libs into *.3.0 and everything started correctly.

As for the game I sometimes had problem with clicking enemies when they hid behind the tree which was pretty frustrating. No problems other then that.

martenscedric 2022-04-17 23:31

@rhanzoc Interesting! we all developed on Linux so this is a bit odd. We were 3 of us on Ubuntu and one on Arch, what is your distro?

rhanzoc 2022-04-18 16:40

@martenscedric my distro is manjoro qonos 21.2.5 (kernel 5.15.28-1) so basically arch

'objdump -p' points to correct path and library names (*.3.0) objdump.png

I guess those should create a hierarchy in which *3.0 libraries are symlinks to *3.0.0, but my linux distro does not recognize them as symlinks for some reason  (the bottom test_symlink was created by me to see if it works) symlinks.png

tomssuli 2022-04-21 10:07

So you did a tower defence rts too :) I liked the simple pixelart and the idea that you gather resources to buy units. Mood was good, music was maybe even too simple, it got old pretty fast, but still fit the minimal graphical theme. I think saving the forest was clever use of the theme as it can be pretty same thing irl.

I wasn't sure should I have been able to remove squirrels when the trees are being whacked, but I could only if I clicked the tree before lumberjack begun hacking it. After that the squirrels were doomed if I couldn't kill the lumberjacks.

The game was pretty difficult right from the beginning and I think I faced a bug as I saved up for a bear and when I finally bought it, it never came. There went my all acorns so I lost the game soon after that. I had already tried the game couple of times and didn't try after the supposed bug anymore.

Anyways, kinda pretty and complete game. Was quite fun to play after a few tries. Good job!
