I'm confused, when I get to level 2 it's just a black screen and music plays. Is something wrong or did I miss something?

stewthepoo 2021-04-28 11:35

It just hangs for me after the first screen. But what little I played I enjoyed!

2rek 2021-04-28 12:15

Graphics and sound effects are good. Shame you can't pass the first level ;/

gamescodedogs 2021-05-07 12:13

The sound is perfect, just one thing: I would like to be able to hold down the button. Overall a good game)

yuri-yakovlev 2021-05-07 12:57

I really like idea of maze with sub mazes. It looks very good. I really like the music. Great work.

meta-link 2021-05-07 14:00

Really cool game, original and well made. I really liked the idea of "levels inside levels" !

Good job

don-tnowe 2021-05-07 16:22

Great game with excellent visuals and splendid audio but I would have enjoyed it far, far more if levels were not so long and twisted that it takes an eternity to go back and forth through. Holding down one button to go back would have solved this problem with minimum effort.

Also, the main mechanic is pretty under-utilized. I was hoping for puzzles, would be amazing.

Otherwise though, solid entry. good job!

shimonster 2021-05-07 16:54

This is a really cool game it took a while to beat but I like how the levels add onto each other and it shows your previous paths. The one thing I would change is to make the walls and floor slightly more contrasting because sometimes I wasn't 100% sure if there was a wall or not (one way is to make the dividers between cells a slightly different color, if it looks good). Other than that, the sounds and graphics were cool!

joe40001 2021-05-07 17:14

@don-tnowe Thanks for the feedback. There is the underlying support for this in the engine, it was never implemented though. (But to do so would be quite trivial) Not sure if I should release a "post-jam" build with this feature or just re-upload with the feature but make a comment that it was a post-jam addition. Thoughts?

First perfect Innovation and Theme for me; what a great, well-defined game! It controlled well and looked great; however, I'm curious why you chose to react to button_release instead of button_press (made it feel a little sluggish). Really neat, and loved all the nesting! Maybe a bit *too* much nesting for level 8. ;)

joe40001 2021-05-07 18:42

@sorlok Glad you enjoyed it! Honestly the getKeyUp was just what I happened to put there first because I knew I didn't want getKey because that would be too unwieldy to control. And since I always tapped fast I never noticed the delay. That's good feedback though, thanks.

conrad123 2021-05-09 02:15

Interesting concept! I like the take on the theme. The gameplay was a bit repetitive, especially during the middle levels, but the mazes inside mazes at the end were a great addition and really tested memory. I liked the music, however, I found the movement sound effects a little annoying. Take nothing away from the concept, though - you should definitely keep developing this! Great job!

colin-misbach 2021-05-09 02:45

Nice atmospheric noises! The repetitive sound for moving got kind of annoying, but I still like the way it sounds. Probably a more impactful repetition in the game though were the levels. When I got to the last level, and entered the first "sub-dimension", I saw there were more sub-dimensions, and I'll be honest, I just closed the game there. There wasn't much variety, and I kind of knew what to expect.

That being said, The visuals and sound got me hooked pretty early on, and made me stick around long enough to see what your game has to offer. The concept is pretty interesting, but there would need to be more engaging mechanics. Nice job!

jerm 2021-05-09 04:44

Awesome game! One of my favourites I've played so far. The early levels are a bit easy (although that's not really a bad thing since it's almost like a tutorial for exploring the game mechanics), but the last level is a real mind-bender and really fun!

I also really liked the graphics, all the extra details added a lot and make it much more visually appealing.

mvasko2 2021-05-09 11:26

I like the graphical style and the music.

The idea of having sub-mazes is pretty original, but - I think it was mentioned before - I think it was slightly underutilized. It was not very difficult to collect all the power, it was just a bit tedious. When I got to the level where I had to collect 80 powers, I just closed the game, because I didn't want to go back through all the submazes again.

In addition to collecting stuff around the map, I think it would be great if the game was counting the length of the path and penalize longer paths. If I'm not mistaken, that would probably require redesigning the levels a bit, but I think it would make the gameplay more interesting.

Solid entry overall, good job

dmtroy 2021-05-09 12:59

Solid idea with great graphics and sound, sadly it gets a bit too repetitive to hold my attention for too long.

asfdfdfd 2021-05-09 14:04

My eyes hurt a bit but i love your take on the classic puzzle mechanics! Well done.

ciaranw 2021-05-09 17:31

Nice, I like the music, and how it gets more intense as you go deeper! I used the version with 'Z', and it removes what I imagine would otherwise be a massive grind - but enjoyed the game! keeping track of everything between the depths was fun! Really nice graphics too, suited the style!

ramperkash 2021-05-09 19:46

The music is great, but the move sound effect drowns the music out a bit. Maybe if it was a bit lower volume it would be better? The music, and how it pitched up going down into the more complicated sections really added a lot to the mood though.

joeyrosicka 2021-05-09 21:32

I really like the overall feel here - the music speeding up as you go deeper is awesome! This game almost feels like a game of hide-and-seek in a way, especially with the last level. Finally getting to that last layer and finding the motherload was pretty satisfying, and then holding rewind to go back up all the layers was equally satisfying.

joe40001 2021-05-09 23:08

@asfdfdfd Sorry to hear about your experience. May I ask if you played in windowed mode or full screen? I defaulted to window mode because fullscreen felt like a bit much sometimes.

cruise-elroy 2021-05-10 20:38

Pretty darn fun game, I loved the polish and it's the perfect length for a jam game! Not very difficult to complete but I don't think it needs to be. Would love to see more levels with some more brain-teasers though!

darqweful 2021-05-12 13:36

When I first started playing, I thought it was too easy but then I got to the last couple of levels and realized how awesome this game is. Loved your interpretation of the theme. Good work!

coleslaughter 2021-05-12 21:40

[Thank you for breaking my brain at the end of stream](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1015845981?t=05h52m09s)

Honestly, this game was ridiculously cool. Both from a technical perspective and an artistic perspective, I was all-around impressed. That last level was a wonderful escalation into chaos. This truly is one of the most underrated gems I've played for this jam. Very nice job with this one!

chrisap 2021-05-12 22:14

Very creative thinking with the level within a level ideas, its the essence of the game and I think it was pretty well executed, I almost got trapped while playing through the final level but it was fun to figure out the puzzle to escape. It gives me a lot of Tron, hack into the matrix vibes. Congrats ! <3

solrun 2021-05-13 20:30

That's a pretty cool game.

The level-within-a-level concept was pretty cool and performed really well even when you got like 5 layers deep. I had mixed feelings on the last level when I kept seeing that there was more recursion inside them. On one hand, it's a cool idea, but on the other it just meant the game was going to be that much longer when I thought I was pretty close to the end. I think having the mazes be a bit simpler would have helped a bit with fatigue. Instead of being like 8x8 or whatever they were, the recursion mazes could have been like 4x4 or 5x5. I think the fatigue was mostly from the colours. Holding z to zip all the way out from the depths of the mazes was a lot of fun.

I'll be honest, I hated the red-green colour scheme. The animated effects on the wall looked pretty cool, but it just needed some different colours. Showing your trail from last level was quite handy so I didn't have to solve the mazes again. The mazes weren't really hard per se, but the low contrast just made it really hard to tell where the walls were.

Not game related, but it's pretty easy with Unity to build your games to be played right in the browser. Then people can just click the link and the game plays, no need to download anything. I found a video that explains how to do it in a minute: youtube.com/watch?v=fNLpZVNDQqc&ab_channel=N3KEN

Your game really fit the theme well. I thought there might be some games with the level inside a level thing and I think you executed it really well.

binaryprinciple 2021-05-13 20:54

Wow! Just wow! The music you selected is perfect, the sounds crispy and the gameplay brilliant! Once I hit the multi-depth layers I noticed how well design this game is: one mechanic smoothly implemented. I enjoyed how the music speed up when I went deeper, and how my trail helps me get back to where I need to go and kept me informed of my location. I think you have a very calm and chill game here that you need to build upon and sell. I would recommend on the deep levels (green, pink) to add a spiral that if you touch it it will pull you back outside of the level, so you have be more aware of your next move. Next time setup a WebGL version of your game so more people will enjoy it. Excellent entry!

fabula-rasa 2021-05-13 21:22

Mazes within mazes, within mazes, within mazes... Mazeception! I really like this concept, and it fits the theme really well. The mazes themselves could be more complicated to solve, but I enjoyed playing anyway.

I totally see the Tron inspiration in the aesthetics, but looking at all the flashing red lights got tiring after a while. Maybe a white-blue Tron-like color scheme would go easier on the eyes. After all, cyans are less aggressive than reds and even greens.

Music is not my cup of tea, but it actually fit the aesthetics and the concept well.

And this, this was a very cool moment:

Screenshot_1.jpg

I downloaded the "Z" version of the game and never once pressed "Z"

xatulu 2021-05-17 17:46

Back during brainstorming I was fantasizing about just this kind of game. The Maze inside a Maze inside a Maze - Mazeception as another commentator put it.

I love your artstyle and even though the gameplay is hurting my feeble brain a lot, i really dig it, awesome stuff! And I for one dig oyur music and sound a lot!

itsboats 2021-05-17 18:26

Really awesome, the addition of the z key was such a good idea! I liked the sounds and music and how you change the pitch slightly as you go deeper (becomes especially apparent in level 8). Would love to see this built on with some new challenges!

macdoom 2021-05-17 22:43

Interesting puzzle game. Loved the graphics and audio, lots of sci-fi vibes. Great level design!
