My new friend is very cute.
This was absolutely amazing! Seriously this is an awesome game! Everything about this was great to me. The ONLY criticism I can give is that it felt like my friend would just keep stopping at random and it didn't really feel like I had much control over when it stopped moving. The controls, I think, could be a little tighter (especially when jumping) as well. Aside from that, I genuinely think that this is an amazing little game and I feel like it deserves WAY more attention. The little 3D platformer really felt like an awesome addition to the list of games for this compo. Amazing work!
This game looks really cute! I think most people will be turned off to downloading directly from github. Is there any reason you don't use itch?
finally a game on linux!!
Really like the look of the game and the ambience it has. And the little pet was adorable.
I loved the game, although my only criticism was that the "end score' was about how long you kept him alive for but you could stand there for quite a while and he wouldn't die. There wasn't an obvious way to know how long you had until that happened? Otherwise, I could have played this for a long time!
Thanks for the kind words, folks!
@vano Yeah, I'm still figuring out how to make decent platforming controls. Were you far away from your friend when he wasn't moving? He also stops whenever he can't see you. It could be that I didn't get the line of sight quite right.
@niborious You know what, I'll put a WebGL build up tonight. I usually prefer to download games, but why not let people play how they want?
@baconeta He survives for three minutes without food — I wanted to make sure that even people without much FPS experience got a chance to walk around a bit. I could score based on the number of fruit he eats, I guess, but the time seems a better measure of "keep it alive." Got any ideas?
Wow what a adorable game with great atmosphere. The cuteness really made you do your absolutely best to keep the radish pet alive
The little buddy is so cute! The whistling mechanics really made it feel like I was protecting it. The game has a great mood going for it! The aesthetics, sfx, and bgm work so well together. Really enjoyable experience!!
Hey! I started following you when you made STEREOtype. Glad to see you're still making games! The look of the game is perfect for a game jam. Pulling off tasteful 3D is hard in a game jam, but you pull it off. I admit I found controlling the little guy sort of frustrating. If you could give the player just a bit more control, I think it would be more fun. Maybe the ability to stop it from moving for a bit longer that you currently can. I may be missing some of the mechanics. It is fun getting him to jump to you. It might be good to include a way to immediately restart a level when you die, waiting for the animation was a bit annoying after the 10th time :P Keep it up! Check out my game if you have the chance!
Very nice! Porings need some apples! XD
@scott-steffes Good suggestions, both. I'm glad you find it tasteful! I think my lack of confidence in my art forces me towards minimalism, which is really the sweet spot for the compo. I would have loved some extra time to add just a little detail and variety to the environment, though...
And I put your game on my to-rate list. :)
Loved this game! The art style and sound design were amazing, and it gave me the feeling of an experimental ps1/ps2 era game. In terms of suggestions, maybe add a pause menu or minimap? just some quality of life stuff. All in all, strong concept and great entry!
I really enjoyed the mood and the concept. Just wish the controls were a little less floaty and I was a bit confused with the whistle mechanic. But I really liked it!
The levels were well structured and exploring the environment was really interesting! Great job.
This was both creepy and adorable, in good ways. The visuals were great and the music made the whole experience surreal and uneasy. My only complaint is that the character controller seemed a bit off. I'm not sure exactly what it was, but it just didn't seem as smooth as I would expect. Otherwise, nice work!
i legitimately enjoyed the aesthetic of this very much - i do love me some clean 3D art and this was very clean. i also had... i admit, a surprising amount of fun throwing the fruits. the arc they had and the way they rolled was just very satisfying for me, as silly as that is to admit. i was a little unclear on when the little dude would follow me or when he'd chill in a room, but i think that mostly just had to do with the fact that as i got more confident i'd go blazing off in some direction jumping over holes and cutting corners and such, and the little creature wanted nothing to do with it lol. it was very relaxing though, and i'd find myself just... watching it as it picked away at whatever fruit i chucked at it and enjoying the experience. it was very meditative!
@williamcarter Good suggestions, added 'em both to the list.
@twobitadder I'm surprised to hear this from multiple people! The dude follows you as long as you're 1) within a certain radius, 2) he has line of sight to you, and 3) there isn't a fruit that he wants right next to him. I'm starting to think I've got a bug... were you seeing him stop following you randomly, move erratically, etc?
A great game! Graphics are awesome, although some more objects can be introduced and the pits sometimes blend. Audio fits the gameplay, there's music as well. However, the gameplay is somewhat confusing - like what are the rules of the creature behaves according to whistles - somethimes it just follows, sometimes is jumps. I added your game to my [favorites](https://furfel.com/posts/ld46-and-finally-on-https) ;)
The little dude is adorable! I found myself running over the edge and dying way more times than the dude running out of food though. cool game, and again, i liked the art.
@blobo Hey, thanks! An art compliment means a lot coming from you. Just played your game, and I'd kill to have art that good in mine.
Nice game! The little guy feels really alive when he jumps about and follows you around :) The movement felt a bit sluggish, but overall good art and gameplay. Good job!
Hi I just played your game! I really liked your take on the theme - the little buddy was super cute. The way you coded his path finding and movement really made him feel alive - by far my favorite part of your game.
A couple of things you might want to add if you continue working on it: 1) A couple more sound effects for the buddy - especially one for him eating, and maybe a couple happy noises would be cute? He is such a great part of your game, I would love to see him be developed even more.
2) The first person controls were a bit challenging. I would add a crosshair in the middle, because I kept thinking I was looking at a fruit but it wouldn't grab it. I would also add a small shadow or something to properly indicate my footing. I found myself falling off when i didn't think I would.
Overall a really wonderful entry - congrats on finishing and submitting!
@zoarfy Agreed on both counts. He *does* actually make some very quiet eating sounds that get completely blown out by the music. With a little more time I was hoping to give him a couple extra fun behaviors: reaction to being given the wrong fruit, doing a little eating dance, that kind of thing. And yeah, the controls... I'm learning how to tune platforming physics, but it's a slow process.
Nice game, took me a while to figure out how to control the little buddy but I guess it is part of the game. Very good take on the theme and you are right, we have it kind of similar ;)
I liked the flat-color style and glow effect on our new little friend! At the beginning I had the impression of seeing 2D sprites in a 3D world, it has a charming effect.
Is this generated randomly ? I have this feeling and on some runs I wasn't able to find the fruit I was looking for. It would be great to have clues about their locations after a certain time of research.
The atmosphere is a bit oppressive with the low field of view, it fits well with the purpose of the game
@number6406 It is generated randomly, in a radius around you as you walk. It cycles between the three fruit colors whenever it places one, so there *should* always be one of each color somewhat nearby, but the layout doesn't always let you get to it easily. What kind of clues did you have in mind?
@caeonosphere Alright! Maybe some sound when you get close to a fruit, so it's easier to find them. Or even a sort of visual wave of different colors according to the fruit that are visible through walls?
@number6406 Good idea!
A phenomenal offering by compo standards. This game is both complex and impressively polished. My main complaint is that, for a game where I have to be making precise jumps, the control could have been more fluid. I grind to a dead halt every time I change directions, and it takes a long time to get up to speed. But the creature is adorable and the audio is very well realized. Nicely done on all accounts.
Super adorable game, quite amazing given the time limit.
