Really great idea! And incredibly difficult. I'll have to keep trying this until I can beat it, which may take a while. But the overall gameplay loop is intense and fun, and the novel idea of having to charge your phone to keep going is a really good one. I would suggest that when your battery dies, either having the "game over" happen then, or give the player more of an ability to recover. The music and art is excellent. Overall, I really enjoyed playing.

rainsong 2020-04-21 11:58

Yea, I died almost immediately. Looks great, fun concept :)music really adds to the atmosphere (and I can't seem to insert words between... so the comment looks strange... oh well...)

oldmanwinters 2020-04-21 12:08

Pretty difficult game! I liked it and I'll definitely be coming back to attempt to finish it later. Well done guys!

zondarg 2020-04-21 14:24

Not easy - first to find the little outlet to recharge a bit and then getting further. Maybe it would be nice to have a "charge meter" on the screen, so you can always see how much energy there is left currently. Otherwise the screen just goes black and then its game over. One other thing is - if playing with keyboard only - on Newsgrounds the "space bar" key is not selected on the game, so pressing it scrolls the screen down - annoying because then you have to scoll up again to see the game.. mouse works better there. But really beautiful pixel art and music. Liked it!

tatetate 2020-04-21 14:32

@zondarg I know. I worked really hard to get a hud going. It worked just fine in testing, but for some reason it didn't make it in when the game got exported :slight_frown: Glad to hear you like the music though! @gablue worked really hard up until the last hour to get everything just right (and I think he's still not satisfied with it)

morcado 2020-04-22 00:43

Nice game, the music fits very good, I also lose the first time because the phone discharged very fast.

jonhthehutt 2020-04-22 02:18

Great game! As all others say: not super easy! I agree with @zondarg that some sort of UI showing how much charge left would be nice so you don't keep having to go back to the menu. A map would also be a very welcome addition, as I sometimes had a bit of trouble wrapping my head around where I was at times. I love the hiding sprites, especially the one in the bookcase! Great stuff, keep it up!

tweedle 2020-04-22 04:47

nice take on the theme. very difficult to continue once the phone losses charge tho, especially entering a new room you've never seen by randomly cliking around a black screen. if it's more of a single path thru puzzle, like another has mentioned - a quicker game over or restart would be appriciated. i enjoyed ducking under a table (tho not sure why i was hiding) and was suprised how many menu options there were. too bad the hud was bugged on export, lemme know if ya'll continue dev on it.

tatetate 2020-04-22 13:47

@tweedle This is definitely a game I want to continue working on, but I definitely want to use a different engine for it. I'm pretty new to game development, and rpgmaker was all I had experience with to make this game, but it's a really limited and bizarre engine that makes it difficult to make really unique games. I'm thinking in the future I'd like to use gamemaker or Unity.

dry-squid 2020-04-22 13:53

The music and art style fit together really well. I love the phone needing juice idea.. This game was incredibly difficult like others have said and I found myself constantly in dark rooms and having to restart to figure out where to go next. I wish it was more clear what to do after the screen goes dark, but it gave me that heartwarmingly confusion of E.T. the Extra Terrestrial. I would love to see this continued to be developed. Excited to see more content from you all.

gablue 2020-04-22 13:53

@rainsong @zondarg @morcado thanks for the comments on the music! I really tried my best here. Though 3 days wasn't enough time to make it as good as I wanted. xD But that's the spirit of the thing, right?

gablue 2020-04-22 14:30

@dry-squid Thanks bro! Our idea was to implement a dynamic music, so it got layers of intensity when the phone was uncharging and when the enemies were close. But this idea had to be cut! I actually got one track to be like this, but it wasn't implemented due to time restrictions. But yeah, I would love too to see this idea further developed. We have many ideas for the story and other stuff as well (=

john-snyder 2020-04-22 15:40

I really like the idea and like others mentioned a HUD or UI system would've benefited the game. I also think that the game shouldn't get pitch black dark where I can't see anything. I think making a small visible area around the player when power is running low and turning it pitch black when the player hits game over would've been better because when it's pitch black it makes the player assume they can't do anything or that it is game over. I think this game has a great start, just needs to be fleshed out more. Good job!

red-ash 2020-04-22 15:46

Nice atmosphere. Didnt understood why i died the first time, and indeed a loading bar showing us how much charge is left could really help. Its also quite hard, i died pretty fast trying to figure out where to go.

ondrasej 2020-04-22 18:27

This is a neat idea, and it could be a fun game with more polish.

In the end, I stopped playing because I was feeling lost in the game. I found the plug in the other room, but then did not manage to explore more without running out of power, and I gave up after 15 minutes or so. On the first couple of runs, when the screen went dark, I was not sure if the game crashed or froze, or if it was part of the game. Since there wasn't anything I could do (and since it happened when I was hidden under a chair), I just assumed that the game crashed, and restarted it.

After a couple of trials, I found that I can still access the menu - and still didn't find anything I could do in this state, so I started optimizing my search and looking for another plug to charge the phone, but did not manage and finally gave up.

Perhaps, from a gameplay perspective, it would make sense to start the game in a more linear area, where the player could try out all the mechanics with some hand-holding, so that they knew what to expect before entering the house. Another thing that would help is a battery + signal strength icon permanently on the screen, making it look like a phone screen. That would warn the user that they need to start looking for a plug or backtrack before they get stuck.

With this fixed, this could be a fun exploration experience.

pythooonuser 2020-04-22 19:30

Really funny how the character can squeeze into these little bookshelves and such :D

ctrble 2020-04-23 00:12

Cool idea and take on the theme, but I found it really hard to play. It took me a few tries to find the first outlet and charge the phone, but then I couldn't figure out how to progress past the second room, even though I had a key in my inventory. I did really appreciate being able to hide under the table, seeing the player's glowing eyes under it was pretty great. Like others have said, with a bit more polish I think this could be really fun, it's a clever idea!

draconimous 2020-04-23 18:55

Great job!!

anthony-pengelly 2020-04-24 20:50

Really good game but very hard! Lovely theme and the style and music fit together really well

vectorwolf 2020-04-25 11:23

A bit difficult at the start but once you get the hang of it it's really fun!

ludumdaredevil 2020-04-25 20:32

It was cool but I didn't like that the screen went completely dark. It was not very enjoyable when the screen went black. You don't know where your going and then suddenly it's game over.

stuckne1 2020-04-25 22:41

I agree with the previous comments about adding a battery gauge, it's too bad it didn't export correctly. I didn't find the game to be super intuitive, but like others have said, it's fun once it's figured out. The screen just going black was a bit frustrating for me as well.

That ghost adds some excitement to the game. Oh, and I liked being to charge the phone while hiding under the table. I'm not sure if this was ability was intended, but I got this warm fuzzy feeling while being plugged in and safe.

I enjoyed the game!

risist 2020-04-26 15:22

Something seems to be broken on web build. After a while screan goes black and stays black for several seconds. Then i have game over. What's going on?

erkberg 2020-04-26 15:42

Pretty cool idea and execution! The atmosphere conveyed is also quite nice, though it could've been even better with some more lighting techniques used. I found the controls to be a bit hard and died quite often. But one time, my phone went out and I was able to find my way back to the lobby charger through various dark rooms, which was a pretty good feeling. The bug that you can still move while being hidden is pretty annoying though, and having the battery show up while playing would be incredibly helpful. After clearing the way east of the garden I couldn't find out how to progress further, maybe having a link to a walkthrough could help people who are stuck and want to finish the game. Still, I enjoyed playing this, good job overall!

duck-reaction 2020-04-26 16:56

Very cool idea, I like the interpretation of the theme.

There is nice atmosphere, dialogs help player to get in the game. The gameplay is little bit tricky to understand, you should add more GUI and maybe a tutorial to help player understand what he have to do.

Good job.

drumgadget-433 2020-04-26 19:31

I agree with some others here about the difficulty, but the game idea is really interesting and the execution of the theme was good! The pixel art is charming, and I enjoyed the music as well! If you've ever hear of or played Sweet Home for the NES, I got some similar vibes in terms of mood. I loved that I could hide under tables and in the fridge. Low res survival horror, good stuff. A little more direction in the beginning and some small tweaks to the interface would make for some great updates. Hope to see more from you guys!

tatetate 2020-04-26 22:39

@drumgadget-433 Oh, I have heard of Sweet Home! That's one of the games that's supposed to have inspired Resident Evil, which is kind of funny because RE is what I kept thinking of when I was designing the map. Anyway, I'm glad you like it. I'm planning on doing some more work on it to work out the kinks and flesh it out for something that could be a full release.

jin9310 2020-04-28 11:07

What an interesting idea to keep you signal alive :) Overall it felt quite hard to and I was figuring out the gameplay for a bit. Some tutorial might get handy. Great job! Thank you for this experience

quadape 2020-05-01 21:05

Interesting theme interpretation! It was really hard to figure out what to do, and how to interact with things, so it would probably be better with some sort of tutorial explaining these things.
