LD46 — Keep it alive

Keep It Undead by pcmaster 2020-04-21T19:42:18Z

Super fun concept, super fun gameplay loop! There's no much to say here. You nailed it! Now, to work in making it one of those Cut the Rope style games for android and iOS! :P

That said, I've got some crazy ideas. First, why do the zombies follow the X? Why not you, the player, could be able to place something that would atract the zombies? Like you could place beacons that atract then. I imagine that, initially, you would only have the possibility to place one. Than you would receive more as the levels got more complex. Also, could be beacons that could be used to push then away, so they don't go in a undesired place. This beacon could be something funny, like sandwich or even a bacon (bad pun, I know)!

Talking about my gameplay, in the begining of the first level, I really thougth that I was supposed to infect everyone (the letters were tiny, so when I fullscreened I gotcha), so it was like a simplified rts game. Had so much fun with it initially! Why not make it a kinda bonus levels with a time limit?

Another really nice thing are the graphics. Very beautiful style! You could stylize it a little more (to make it a little cooler)! The controls were really sattisfying (to drag a box, like a pc, was for some reason pretty cool), but there were problems with the zombies. One of the pigs didn't liked me, cause I've waited for him a bit of time, and he wasn't coming to the place I needed him lol

The music was not that fitting tho. The theme of the game doesn't really match, cause the theme of the game is not properly horror, but a funny little thing. But, if you put a casual like game music, it will also lose all the charm. It needs to be something that has some coolnes and irreverence, but not so much sugar (so we don't get musical diabete!). As a composer, I imagine that you should take that "virus motif" sorta thing you got there and merge it with an irreverent vibe.

Ok, that's it I think. Hope I helped!

Edit: made some mistakes

The Wait by devilqube 2020-04-21T19:00:25Z

Played it! Find it a very interesting concept. The presentantion was very good and I understood easily what should be done. It has so much potential! Said that, you have really to work in improving the main gameplay loop! The obvious ideas are: inventory system, crafting, etc. Those are standart stuff to be thougth. But I think the theme on this game should be really highlited! Maybe you could think with the many interactions you could do using the fire. It has to be kept alive cause it will cook your food, or, be used as a weapon against the enemies, and even, to try to call the attention of the authorities to your current position! The way it is, yep I know it is a starting concept and so, is a bit laking on the gameplay loop side. You have to think in ways to balance the main thing, keeping it alive, with other stuff like exploring (maybe you want a special kind of wood? and so on...). That said, let me complain about the controllers. Man! Why not traditional rpg like movement? This turning out was a bit annoying  , but I get it. Time limit and so. That's it, hope I gave you some nice insights! Keep the good work!

edit: Also, let me add: why not create hand crafted world? This personal touch is lacking in some of those survivals. Maybe this in an additional story mode? Dunno, you tell!

Really fun gameplay loop. As others said, it start slow, when the other foes appear it starts to get better. It would be great if new things were introduced, like crows, that you should shout alway. I really think another funny thing is that, after some levels, one of those enemies when the level was almost ending, came with a gas mask. So, in the other day, he would say "I know how to deal with this..." and he may use his banjo to play bad music so they go away (or a crazy combo system where the guy feel down, lose his mask, and then you fart him away... he could then come with a earplug, and so on. It could make a crazy combo system xD).

Love the art and so on.

Keep Joe Alive by Sanguis 2020-04-22T11:26:57Z

So yeah. A deligthfull experience you created here! This pixel art is so beautiful! Really man, you nailed it! Besides, you made me smile twice, with those super cool animations = that coffe joke. The one with the rock tho! It should have a balance between seriousness and funny. I like the idea that the same object may give you different animations when you die, with this fun touch! That said, I think that what was said about adding more and more variation to the animation is a really nice and important feedback that was given. Not that it's lacking in anyway, but that it has so much potential, it can't be negleted!

About the gameplay loop. In the beggining I thought that I was supposed to press the button on spot, like a guitar hero thing (so I tried to click it when the 4th bar appeared). Then I got it! I played it twice. One thing that this lacked is a little pacing. The pacing stays the same and this kinda takes away the player desire to try again and so. So, my suggestion is that, (it's a obvious thing but, I know, but...), it may get gradually intenser. How so? I really think about Wario Ware's speed up thing here. If you've played it, there's a time when the things speeds up with intenser music and so! How would it happen? When he get at, let's say 50m (or 100m? - it may not take long), he looks to the clock and he says "oh no! I may get late", and he starts waking faster. Then at 500m he looks the phone and has a message like: "Hey Joe, wasn't you coming earlier to see the project?". Then at 1500m the boss call you and say: "YOU ARE GONNA BE FIRED IF YOU GET LATE AGAIN, JOE". And things like that. It would be great that, let's say, at a certain moment he starts to run, and, in this way the obstacles may get wilder, like jumping on clifs and so on.

Also... About the thing a said earlier, there could be a separate meter system and a score system, so one may track the leveling as I said and the other the scoring. My idea to make it very enganging is to make it like as the guitar hero game I thought it was :P; how so? By making it has a system where you have to hit on time:

[ too earlier (sweetspot) too late ]

Yeah, I know it has many stuff that's like this. But the idea here is that the too late/too early would give the player less points, and the sweetspot would make it combo. So, in this combo system I made my final statement about the game: the music is a bit repetitive for a infinite game xD. But you already know that, and you had a timelimit and so on. I know. But I had to made this statement to give a suggestion on how to solve this problem. Why not that the combo system be united with the music? As you combo more and more, the music may get more complex, more enganging and more cool. With added instruments and so on, dinamically! So, initially there would be the base motif with its base, then, it adds a kind of percussion, then a second melody bellow, then a countermelody, then more drums, then some amazing violings, then some crazy arpeggios, and so on!

So it would really be a enganging and magical thing to try to combo more and more, cause everything conspirate to it be a funny thing. Beware though, it may addict the player xD. It would be really crazy good. I love those ideas, myself, specially as a composer. And also, each level up could feature a different music. Also, if the music and the game is so dynamic, the level system I mentioned, could be made more sparse, like, 500m apart, dunno.

Oh my. How much I typed. Sorry for that.

@rainsong @zondarg @morcado thanks for the comments on the music! I really tried my best here. Though 3 days wasn't enough time to make it as good as I wanted. xD But that's the spirit of the thing, right?

Charge it! by TwistedHawk 2020-04-22T14:30:37Z

@dry-squid Thanks bro! Our idea was to implement a dynamic music, so it got layers of intensity when the phone was uncharging and when the enemies were close. But this idea had to be cut! I actually got one track to be like this, but it wasn't implemented due to time restrictions. But yeah, I would love too to see this idea further developed. We have many ideas for the story and other stuff as well (=

Solar by thevinter 2020-04-22T13:39:56Z

There were great ideas here. Pretty good stuff! Really. If you invest time on it, many things can be made. Really enjoyed the music. The first time the door slammed was a surprise, so it's good thing. As already said, it will be a cool experience to try balancing it all out. Not easy task, but if fine tuned, can be a pretty solid experience!

Let me add, I think the interaction with the bonfire should be automatic. I got a bit confused by pressing E and the game doesnt letting me move the guy around. Making the fire the life is genious too. It would be great if the guy wasn't a walking flame, but a cool char with a flame on top, or somewhere. This emotional music make me feel that this flame is important somehow!

Why not make a story about a cute safety match style guy that wants to take this fire somewhere (like a mission). The player doesn't know where he is going, but it could be a very emotional thing like, in the end, he was taking this flame to someone in top of a mountain whose bonfire was extinguishing, so he had to go the way down to take a blue flame of sort. Could be his son, or his family. Something like this. Aside from that, there are many rpg style stuff that could be implemented, but those are the obvious ones. xD

Hey bro! I really understand you! It was my first jam too. It's really tiring!

I really think you have a very solid idea here. The concept is very very cool and a funny one. Really like the story dialogue in the beggining. Should really invest on making it on point, in such a way that makes it obvious that the man that was put in charge done a really bad mistake by accepting this job.

Said that, I think that the main question in this game is how fun it is to play and how much potention it has. Now that you have a solid idea, imagine it as a small seed. Cause you have to make it grow into a fun gameplay loop. As it is now, the game has a kinda non enganging, cause everything is kinda in "the same place". I think that the decision making part can play a important role in this game.

I have an idea on to how to do so: -You are THE pilot of a malfunctioning flying thing. That would be crazy! You shoulda be, like, piloting the ship and, at the same time, fixing it. It could be made in a way that the piloting part could have some moments of relaxing AI controlled fligth (with fewer obstacles), and, others (you could have a screen for that) with many things, so you have to take control of the flight. This way, when somethings when 2 or 3 things are breaking, you shoulda decide which one is most important at that moment for the action you are doing. Ex: you need velocity? Fix the engine. You need the missiles working correctly? Fix the missile launcher. Maybe with few O2 your character start to alucinate more and more, before he dies. So he start seeing things that doesn't exist (and the vision diminishes. And so on. This way the gameplay enter in a decision making loop the get even more chaotic, time to time!

Stacker Slackers by XCompWiz 2020-04-22T18:09:42Z

Hey bro! Tried to play this one. Looks really funny, as I like those cooperative like games. Though it seems to not be working correctly. We tried on the public server you published. Maybe something is wrong there? We tried twice, with me being the host and once as him. None of us had a clue on what to do in "our turn". I only had a discharge black thing and the words "your turn". So yeah! Hope I helped
