This was really a fun game! I was getting stressed on that last level! Great job doing horror.

zimennik 2019-04-29 04:14

Well, sir, congratulations. You managed to scare me. The third level is simply gorgeous with its unexpected twist =)

grllle 2019-04-29 07:59

This was super cool. nice level ideas and variants, great nostalgic art and sounds. more than worth playing through the whole thing!

morg 2019-04-29 08:19

Art and sounds were absolutely amazing, it was super spooky. The sounds of death approaching as you explore the levels were very unnerving. It did not fit much of the theme, in my opinion, but it doesn't matter because I got SPOOKED

shp 2019-04-29 11:59

Sound and atmosphere on point! Suitably unnerving

mrnyarlathotep 2019-04-30 13:21

Pretty simple concept, but well executed - bit of a stretch for the theme, but close enough that I'm not going to sweat it.

I really liked that you managed to get enough assets made within the compo deadline to give the levels their own visual identity, instead of each level looking the same with a different layout - speaking from experience thats tough to do in a compo entry!

drskort 2019-04-30 13:22

The whole atmosphere was very tense and because of that I got really scared of the skulls ^^ I tried really hard to avoid them because I was scared of a jumpscare ( I replayed and there was no :D) Good Job on that even though I think that the atmosphere was much more stressful in the beginning when there was more focus on the whispering and approaching of one or two hidden sculls than on a lot of blood and a lot of sculls ^^

eddensoft 2019-05-01 08:32

WOW, This game is super cool, level design, graphics. Good job!

neverautomatic 2019-05-01 22:03

The graphics were really crisp for what I'm guessing was a raycasting engine? Really well done, especially for your first 3D game.

kostasvs 2019-05-01 22:06

Oh boy, just finished the game, I normally can't handle games like this (I had accidental jumpscares now and then and they really get to me). Great mood, the game is simple but well executed.

pixscope 2019-05-01 22:07

I love it !

raphiell 2019-05-02 01:14

I absolutely LOVE the creepy atmosphere, the fade in seeing all those skulls on level 3 was great. My only suggestion would be lowering the look sensitivity, and maybe some variety in the types of death that come after you. Very cool!

Well done!

jcmoyer 2019-05-02 03:51

@neverautomatic There is no raycasting, the level geometry is true 3D (admittedly it looks like a Wolf3d clone with the tile-based level design but I didn't have time to model levels too ;) All the textures were drawn at 512x512 resolution and rendered with nearest texture filtering to preserve hard edges, which is probably why it looks crisp.

simplepotential 2019-05-02 22:26

Nice maze game! Level difficulty progression was really nice. First person games make a bit dizzy so i didn't play past level 4 but still really nice.

zubspace 2019-05-02 22:52

I really like the music and how it get's more frightening. Good job!

cheesepencil 2019-05-02 23:06

I hope people realize what an achievement this is without third party libraries...

My only complaint is that the mouselook is extremely sensitive. On more than one occasion a skull came out of a wall or a corner and gave me a jump, which of course wiggled my mousing hand and caused the camera to spin around a couple thousand degrees, completely disorienting me. I still managed to beat it in one try, but the jump scare + the complete discombobulation nearly made me pee my pants.

If it were me I'd have set the mouse sensitivity to 50% or 25% of its current value. I guess I could have done that with the windows mouse settings so I'm just rambling.

FYI these are my Windows mouse settings and I'm using a crappy $5 wireless optical mouse for laptops (I guess) Annotation 2019-05-02 190255.png

That's not to take away from how cool this is, it's really, really cool.

jcmoyer 2019-05-02 23:48

@raphiell @cheesepencil I had originally planned to add a mouse sensitivity setting (for most of development it was twice as sensitive as it is now lol) but I never got around to it. I will make sure to incorporate your feedback in future games.

atmospherium 2019-05-02 23:58

Hey, I escaped death.

I liked the mood and atmosphere of this a lot. Even the ways the field of view felt kinda distorted worked toward the feeling of being lost in a surreal plane, trying to outrun death. Things felt difficult in places, but I always felt that if I got caught that it was my fault (not to mention having checkpoints is SUPER helpful). By the end I found the balance of baiting the skulls and strafing to explore without feeling like I was about to get caught.

cheesepencil 2019-05-03 00:01

@jcmoyer it's a very, very minor quibble and I would never expect a jammer to waste any of their 48 hours on fluff like input settings. Your game is excellent

fashionbatman 2019-05-03 00:07

super spooky! The games well polished and is fun to play, so great job!

rsim 2019-05-03 06:53

Very moody - both the graphics and audio - well done! They fitted the game very well. Definitely nostalgic for me, as it reminded me heavily of some of the post-Wolf3D, pre-Doom games/engines which was very formative for my game dev career(/life? lol).

candlesan 2019-05-03 07:00

Really spooky vibe! Great audio. the audio really got the super creepy/chilling vibe going. Impressed you were able to create so many assets in a single weekend between the audio, the art, the skulls and the level design. Nicely done.

candlesan 2019-05-03 07:02

I just re-read your description that you wrote the WebGL rendering code during the duration of the jam. Very impressive! That makes your game far more impressive!

jm-studio 2019-05-03 23:54

Well done for this game especially for not using any librairy or anything and getting to this result with a prefectly creepy mood and atmosphere ! COngarts !

sylvie 2019-05-03 23:57

This had a really creepy atmosphere and nice sound and graphics. Well done!

norris-eldridge 2019-05-03 23:59

Great atmosphere! It was a bit too easy I think to just run passed stuff. It would have been great if the AI was perhaps a little bit smarter. It seems like the AI was move at player which meant that most of the time they were stuck in corners or on walls. But still it was a solid entry though I must admit I don't really see the connection to the theme. Overall great work though :)

dorblin7z7 2019-05-04 03:36

**OOF** this game's laying on the spooks *thick*! Really loved the atmosphere, almost everything contributed to the fear and sense of dread! There's even a puzzle in there!

This game may be simple but it's all about atmosphere, and I've not seen many games that come close!

datagreed 2019-05-05 14:16

damn, the music is disturbing. Nice entry! Reminded me of creepy version of Wolfenstein higher resolution graphics :)

quadape 2019-05-05 21:10

These eerie sounds and fog! Very cool atmosphere. Graphics are mostly pleasant, and the game is simple and fun.
