So apparently there is a problem editing entries and I'm unable to add link to game's download - it is available from - https://zgragselus.itch.io/sacrifical-flight

I managed to save $24k worth of people! :D It was very frustrating. Good job!

iamsodarncool 2018-12-06 07:39

Nice job. The game looks great; I love the balloon model, the water shader, the fire effect in the hot balloon, and the post processing.

However, it's difficult to see how you're doing. The water is moving REALLY fast towards the island which creates the impression that you're moving away from the island. I found this confusing. It was also hard to gauge how far from the island I was, because there's no way to know how big it is. Placing trees or some other props on it that have a guessable size would have helped with this.

echo-team 2018-12-06 18:33

Easy peasy, I immediately threw all the worthless people out. YOU MEAN NOTHING TO MEEE. Almost made it to the other side too XD

bootak 2018-12-06 18:38

I love the looks of this game! I found very challenging to track your position and height without, which is, probably, makes this game more realistic. However, water moving towards the island makes gameplay rather confusing, at first I thought that I move away from island.

a beautiful game ,and a meaningful theme

kutase 2018-12-07 23:13

Nice graphics! Good interpretation of theme.

roka-josh 2018-12-07 23:13

Good little game, would love to see this developed more if the people had certain statistics and other factors which makes the decision of who to throw out harder. Good job, and best of luck!

mrleeperry 2018-12-07 23:24

Interesting stuff, good decision making to be had. The slow pacing kind of helps as it's not immediately obvious what the effects are of your actions.

My strategy was simple: *eat the rich*. Unfortunately I forgot to pick their pockets before throwing them overboard and ended up with a pretty low score.

Anyway, nice little experience. It looks good, the music is nice and epic, and I won on only my second try! Thanks for this.

samuel-lee 2018-12-08 23:19

Graphics are delightful!

pixelmeal 2018-12-09 01:05

Nice job! It was hard to tell which direction the balloon was heading at first, so I thought I needed to use WASD to pilot it. Might be helpful to have a "distance to island" meter to show that you are moving towards the island.

Spoiler: it's possible to save everyone. Not sure if this was intentional or not, but I liked that there is a way to beat the game without sacrificing anyone.

zgragselus 2018-12-09 03:21

Thanks everyone for playing, I hope you've enjoyed it!

@pixelmeal Yes it is possible to save everyone (and was intentional). It's not that easy (because you need to fire fuel at correct time and altitude). I originally thought of adding some other aspects - like distance to island UI, and side wind at different altitudes (gameplay is physics driven).

There was not enough time to implement that.

@roka-josh I had it in previous games, yet decided to exclude it this time. Previously I always implemented it on Monday, sadly I had to be at work for majority of Monday (which meant that it's a no-go for main menu and high score list).

@bootak The water movement doesn't really make much sense (it's just a texture coordinate offsetting with a bit help of DUDV map ~ shaders for effects like water and fire were written during the jam) - adding flow maps could improve this to specify direction of water flow. It should be towards the island (near it) and pretty much none (further from it).

@iamsodarncool Indeed it does (as mentioned earlier - water could be improved). UI for altitude was originally planned, but I threw it out in the end, as I thought it killed the purpose of user estimating height just from looking around.

As for trees/rocks/etc. on the island. I originally had that in plan, yet it would've been quite a lot of art - and it wasn't really possible to make it all on time. So that feature went out as one of the first.

Beautiful graphics and a simple mechanic. Manage to win the game without throwing anyone off the balloon which was nice (even though I wasn't half my gas as I thought you had to hold space instead of press it). But anyways, simple and functional entry, good job

zanagi 2018-12-09 05:32

Cool visuals, but would've really liked some clarity on current game states (distance to island, water, the effects of throwing people and burning the gas)

dangerousfat 2018-12-09 06:36

Very pretty game and decent use of the theme. Well done.

jk5000 2018-12-09 08:10

A very pretty game with some great music. The gameplay is okay, but I would have liked a more to do. Overall a fine LD game.

aevek 2018-12-09 08:10

I liked the decision making you forced, but the spreadsheet maker in me noticed that the poor people are basically worthless since although they way half as much as the rich guy, they are worth 1/16 of him each. I like that you made a game that made me think this way. I had a really hard time gauging the motion of the balloon to help estimate trajectory, mostly because of the insane speed the water texture moves at. I thought I was doomed because I was moving away from the island for a long time. A water texture that doesn't have such a strong directional animation would make this game much easier to understand visually.

dob 2018-12-09 08:23

I agree with others - visually stunning, with great music and sound also. The game didn't seem to me to provide enough clear feedback (or even basic information) about how the decisions worked, so the only way to know what was going on was to experiment and guess at the effects based on apparent distance and height. It also seemed unfair that if I burned all my fuel I dropped like a rock no matter how high I was - not what would happen in real life. but very, very impressive and a beautiful game.

jac-b 2018-12-09 10:12

Well it looks like slightly buffed version of my LD game. I like graphics and camera. I was just bit confused by controls at the beginning, but I figured out soon what I'am supposed to do and I landed safelly on the island.

dexp 2018-12-09 14:29

Water is the perfect part of the game. Picture itself looks really great at the start. It's a shame that island is not so detalized.

3ncryp73d 2018-12-09 14:30

The idea is really nice and the game was fun to play. Only thing that would have been really nice would be if you had made it more dramatic (you getting money for the people makes you seem cold blooded and emotionally detatched), maybe some dialogue would have helped with that. The other option would be the use of dark humor by really showing the moral flaws of you killing people for money and making fun of it (maybe something like "I'm sorry but the other one paid more")

lanedavis 2018-12-12 01:42

Nice 3D work!

I couldn't tell if I was moving or not. I spent a bunch of time trying to enter various movement inputs and I couldn't tell if it was doing anything. I threw out almost everyone right at the start and spaced out my burners, but it seems like it didn't do anything because I ended up in the water all the same.

Impressive post-processing work in this amount of time! Very intuitive camera control. I would have used a touch less motion control, since I ended up feeling fairly sick by the end.

bitdecay 2018-12-12 05:34

I found it very hard to understand what was happening. Sometimes I would just plummet (faster than freefall, it seemed). Other times, it didn't appear that my fuel did anything. A little more information on what was happening would have been nice. The visuals were awesome, though!

dmitry-kaidash 2018-12-12 07:58

Nice graphics! And beautiful game!

2018-12-14 09:29

Interesting style!) btw what about source code? would like to study your art :))

artur-hawkwing 2018-12-17 17:59

Graphics were awesome, and the music was nice. For the game-play, I found it a bit slow and uneventful. I would have liked it if the island were closer, or if you had to choose between a few possible islands, etc. As it is, while still nice, I found myself wishing for more to be happening.
