i'm gonna have "Bangarang, Woo" in my head for days now.... kinda wanna make that the loop in my side project.

tezza48 2017-12-04 03:05

Nice, music's kinda cool, i think it's spookier without though, the footsteps help you zone in and constantly scrolling the light gets you really engrossed in it.

WOO

prostone 2017-12-04 03:38

Enjoyed playing, only thing that seemed weird to me was the floor texture moving with you, feels like the character is not moving on the floor. Otherwise really good! Good job!

really immersive game well done!

I thought it was fun. One of the nicest uses of the flashlight I saw was getting the ghost to attack you so that it moves out of the way of the door.

This would have been great for the Running out of Power theme, if there was a depleting battery feature.

The graphics could use some improvement.

eerongal 2017-12-04 04:23

I really liked the concept. Game play is a little simplistic, but with some refinement, it could be a really solid game!

bookworm31 2017-12-04 08:26

Neat concept. I liked the way that deliberately luring the ghosts towards you, then turning down your light to scoot past them was done. I have to say that I was not expecting the ghost noise when you die and I may have jumped a bit.

jk5000 2017-12-04 08:57

A really simple and super great game idea. The best part of the game is the scary atmosphere the is in game. Well done.

sholf 2017-12-04 10:57

Damn, the sound when you get caught made me jump haha! This is a really cool concept, I love it. It's really fun balancing the light and gets pretty spooky at times. Though as the person above said, the floor tile (background) moving with you does feel kinda odd. Nice game though!

kashif 2017-12-04 12:28

Wow, Spooky. Fits really nicely in the theme.

BTW I really like the circular lighting around the player. I guess you did it in C++ but do you have any idea about how to do this in Unity?

Thanks

benhumphries 2017-12-04 12:36

@Kashif Thanks for the feedback!

If I had to guess, one way to do it would be to use a point light that is a child of the player. That way it would follow the player around. To increase/decrease the radius, maybe scale it on x and z? Of course, you could always use a lightmap and a RenderTexture (similar to what I did in C++) but that might be a little overkill for an actual engine that supports lights.

drfallos 2017-12-04 13:16

thanks for game. liked sound of ghost contact with me) passed 1 level blinded)

siarhei-rakuts 2017-12-04 13:25

look so fun) done level 5

scott-r-howell 2017-12-04 13:27

its hard to actually tell where enemies are without first triggering them, making it more of a memory and trial an error game than a skill game, I suppose I'm just faffing up the puzzle of it, also you scared my dog! WOO! haha

mormert 2017-12-04 15:01

Kinda looks like snapchat ghosts ;)

Actually nice graphics! Well done :)

orcifried 2017-12-04 19:23

This is fucking good. I got so freaking scared, dude...

professor 2017-12-04 19:28

This was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed the game mechanics and art style. Thanks for sharing this game.

talia 2017-12-04 19:53

the circle light is pretty and easy to use. I really like the different enemytypes. It would be nice if the levels would be a little bit more various. Great entry!

soyrandom 2017-12-04 19:54

Very original idea!

poorwill 2017-12-04 23:26

You really hit the mark with the theme I feel. There's a nice emergent sense of dread that comes with the fact that you can't see much.

benhumphries 2017-12-05 01:10

Thanks everyone for the great feedback! I'm really happy that my game is being received well. Just a few post-delirious comments on the game:

1. I think in hindsight some of the exits to the levels are annoyingly hard to find. If I could, I'd go back and add a light next to every door. 2. At one point, the ghosts moved about 2 times faster than they do now, but I felt that the game became more about luck than a quick reaction, so I decreased it. I think this was the right choice. 3. The scrolling background! Ugh! I couldn't bring myself to take the easy (and very hacky) way out of this problem, so I just left it. It annoys me too, but hopefully it doesn't get too in the way of the fun! 4. I've shown a few people this game and in person, the physical jolt when you run into a ghost is amazing to me. I think it's awesome that I made something that has that great of an effect!

**Future commenters, I'm curious, what level did you stop on? Did you skip any?**

gamedevzach 2017-12-05 19:53

I ended on 7 or 8 I think. It's the pitch black on with tons of paths and green and white ghosts. The green ghosts seemed impossible until I realized that although they don't fall back asleep, there is a certain benefit to putting them back in the dark, which is how I got that far. Very innovative and great use of the theme! Is there a 3rd ghost type further in?

benhumphries 2017-12-05 20:01

@gamedevzach Yes, there is a third type, first featured in Level 9. They are basically the opposite of the white ghosts, they follow you when they are in the dark, and fall asleep in the light. I think they add some good conflict to the game in the later levels.

cogcomp 2017-12-05 20:54

Hehe. The ghost scared the crap out of me the first time it happened, even when a knew it was coming. Whooo!

moeshan 2017-12-06 04:55

Awesome...Maybe I shouldn't play this game at lunch break...at the company...

budgiem2 2017-12-06 22:50

This was genuinely terrifying, I loved it! The WOO when you get caught scared the life out of me. I liked how creative you were with such a simple gameplay mechanic. My only issue was on level 5 where I think I spawned outside of the level for some reason, and I had to skip that level (rather than sacrificing myself). But honestly this is one of the most enjoyable compo games I've played so far. Great job!

koficola 2017-12-07 01:11

A top tier compo game if ever I've seen one - its got it all! Slamming off my light for the green devils and dreading that ungodly WOO for the sake of my poor bowels was an incredible spook. Well done!

nyri0 2017-12-09 12:10

Really nice game, cool mechanics, I like how I can wake up ghosts to make them move out of the way.

The graphics are a bit inconsistent (top or side, can't decide), and you could have taken more time working on the character and creating a cool animation, as it's the thing you see all the time.

Overall, nice game, nice you've done so many levels for a game jam.

nnnikki 2017-12-15 13:15

This game is a bit too scary...
