when i click on one of the planets a video shows up…
using chrome 18

madmaw 2012-04-23 12:24

Oh, I see how that could be confusing. The "video" is actually just controls for the music player, I figured I'd leave the controls visible in case you wanted to mute the music, but it does look like the whole game is actually a video (it's not).

nice!

samoojamies 2012-04-23 12:56

Nice idea :)

cakemonitor 2012-04-23 13:22

I really enjoyed this game. It's a great idea (although I'm not convinced that it matched the theme particularly well). Still it scorec highly from me overall :)

arhpositive 2012-04-23 21:17

bullets tend to get stuck when they're fired repeatedly. other than that, i think the concept is cool :)

norgg 2012-04-23 23:02

Scintilla is amazing and eye-melting but I didn't really get much out of the others. Great concept though.

frankthetank 2012-04-23 23:05

Pretty interesting idea!

orni 2012-04-24 05:10

I love your use of optical illusions

cadin 2012-04-24 16:54

This is really cool. Great idea! It would be neat to see a whole series of mini games based on different illusions, with different types of gameplay. Nice work.

shigor 2012-04-25 00:42

You know... this is one of the wtf games :) At first I thought that it's just a very simple shooter, then the illusion thing broke into my brain...

I love games that mess with people's mind :) even if this is not much of a game, it deserves high rates :)

devwil 2012-04-25 00:50

agh! some of these are maddening (and uncomfortable to look at)! i don't know that this was a *good* idea, but it's certainly a bold one and i applaud that!

madmaw 2012-04-25 01:44

I feel bad for not quoting my sources, but I wanted the element of surprise for this one (which too much info would ruin). Now there's enough commentage to push this post down a bit...

Scintilla and Hermann http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grid_illusion

Fateeg (this example is actually way more amazing than what I went with) http://www.feelguide.com/2011/11/10/optical-illusion-of-the-day-the-image-that-vanishes-before-your-eyes/

Unfortunately I had to cull a couple because I ran out of time (and started experiencing pretty bad headaches)

Thanks for playing and commenting!

Really unique concept, enjoyed playing this one! It would have been nice if the theme was a little more integrated than just the level selection :)

cakencode 2012-04-27 02:12

Very much of a mindtrip, but my eyes got a little sore from playing. I gave it high marks for creativity though!

dokidoki 2012-04-27 03:06

I agree about the bullets. I know some games have a limit of one bullet at a time, but usually the "aborted" bullet disappears. But cool idea!

liger13 2012-04-27 05:03

Really amazing idea. Why do the bullets curve, though?

madmaw 2012-04-27 05:49

The bullets are supposed to be somewhat homing (to encourage the user to keep their eyes on the centre of the screen instead of worrying too much about accuracy), they should track to the closest thing of the correct colour.

As to why there is only one and an interrupted bullet leaves an artefact on the screen...yeah that's a bug. It would have been reasonably easy to fix, but it also conveniently stops the player from spamming out bullets, so I left it and concentrated on other things.

r3ason 2012-05-02 04:48

My eyes!! D: Nah, this is a wonderful, amazing departure from the same 'ole same 'ole games submitted! I am literally seeing spots right now! Hermann done me in :P Great graphics, great sound to go along with it! Only minor issue (which I think someone else mentioned) is that bullets tend to "stick" on the screen. Is this intended? Thanks for making this!

lukerissacher 2012-05-02 06:49

Cool - nice experiment. Liked the scintilla level, that was clever.

netmute 2012-05-02 11:54

I had no idea what I'm supposed to do, cool idea tho ;)

badlydrawnrod 2012-05-04 19:15

Those grid-like levels completely messed with my eyes. That being said, this is a very original idea.

Need to clean up the old shots though.

robert-swan 2012-05-08 23:01

Again, not sure about the theme. But 6 stars out of 5 for innovation! Fantastic idea - really had me doubting my eyes at points which I love.

jedi 2012-05-13 23:12

Didn't notice at first but, as promised, it doesn't work in Firefox :/.

madmaw 2012-05-17 22:31

FYI, the latest version of Chrome seems to have had some subtle change in how SVG/CSS gets treated and the bullet collisions have stopped working. I guess that's what you get for using undocumented APIs.

The illusions still work, but the gameplay is more underwhelming than ever.
