Didn't get anywhere - but it plays nicely!

enjoyed this a lot! I think it's a great plan to have a very simple game mechanic and spend your effort creating a big and diverse play area like this to explore. the silouette gives you enough of an idea about the level and what things are, but it's nice and easy to create too. very clever

felipe-budinich 2011-08-23 02:14

I managed to finish it :-D (I loved the outro tune).

The graphics were really clever, tho I would have worked on the color palette choice a little more.

What really impressed me was the sound design, it's known that HTML5 audio support is crappy at best, yet you made it so i tought i was playing a flash game. Simple but simply amazing.

vandriver 2011-08-23 05:07

I just adore games like this.

strd6 2011-08-23 22:12

Good gameplay and feel and the music adds a nice ambiance.

My biggest criticism is that some of the jumps are pretty brutal to make and others where you have to just guess right or fall into a pit of lava.

sfernald 2011-08-23 22:14

I didn't manage to finish, but I did enjoy this game. Especially nice since it was made in JS and I don't like that many JS games.

The music and one color background helped create an effectively creepy ambience.

The jumping puzzles were tough but fun. I really felt like a mountain climber trying to find the next position for my foot.

I felt like if it had been done in flash it might have been a bit smoother and maybe some lighting and smoking effects for the background could have been added which probably wasn't really feasible with JS.

Good show!

ippa 2011-08-23 22:21

@Daniel X. Moore: there actually is a way of Not having to guess ... :].

@sfernald: JS is crazy fast nowadays, I could have done more. But first day was lost due to a servercash, so I basically did this in 10 hours. I also kind of like the minimalism of the gfx :).

What FPS did you get? It's very smooth here in Chrome.

terra 2011-08-24 00:55

Good fun :) I enjoyed the jumping puzzles, I thought they were quite fair. I really liked how you solve the first room, too, very tactile, felt like I was properly breaking out.

onefineline 2011-08-24 02:01

My FPS were very high, FYI. @ ippa: I could be wrong, but I think you do need to guess with the REALLY big jump/fall. Haha, I guess I could look at the map PNG? I can't imagine that's what you meant...? Anyway, I really enjoyed it, although I agree that the jumps can be pretty brutal. But the controls are good enough so it's not unfair.

kevinworkman 2011-08-24 03:34

Awesome, I'm really jealous of your level design skills!

marudziik 2011-08-24 11:49

I really like the design and music. Congrats!

gaeel 2011-08-24 13:21

Awesome stuff, I like the pixel-perfect platform physics, they were used really well, and the no-nonsense monochrome graphics makes for an interesting visual style mixed with a very tight platform challenge.

danik 2011-08-25 00:55

Twitchy pixel jumping, but still much easier than I would have thought. Really nice atmospheric music, great imaginative level design. Reminds me of Knytt a bit. :)

ippa 2011-08-25 14:00

@Danik: oh, I love knytt. knytt, spite its simpleness, is a game where I just can walk around, watch the gfx and listen to the ambience.

rudy 2011-08-25 19:42

Pretty cool. Not a fan of pixel platformers, but controls are pretty well done here. Challenging at times, but not frustrating thanks to "safety ledges". Does get increasingly more annoying to maneuverer pixel-size ledges. Would love a little variety from black though (nicely contrasting lava notwithstanding; couldn't resist taking a swim :)). Would also have loved some light effects. Layout is a little weird, I got a "am I supposed to be skipping these ledges here" feeling at times.

neosam 2011-08-25 20:02

cool! really cool!

d_m 2011-08-25 20:41

This game really spoke to me. Striking pixel graphics, palette and ambient sounds/music were great. I found it a bit tough at first until I learned the "rules" of jumping and figured out what route to take. I though it was a really effective game. Somehow the fact that this evil old castle is empty is actually more haunting, especially with the zones given different provocative names ("The Great Hall", "The Maze" etc).

A few suggestions: it would be nice to allow the player to jump up through pixels, at least 1 pixel thick platforms. Not a huge deal but would make some of the climbing a bit nicer to do. Also, parallax background (as I mentioned on IRC) would be awesome! That said, I really

codexus 2011-08-27 07:37

Not bad but all this repetitive jumping and then falling down again gets annoying quickly if you're not into that kind of games. I would have liked it better if the rest of the game was more like the first room. Good sound ambiance.

danielzoran 2011-08-27 18:28

nice!

andrew-2 2011-08-28 12:38

The music really sets the mood but the plat forming itself could probably use some fine tuning.

tcstyle 2011-09-04 10:03

I like the depressing atmoshpere but got stcuk very soon.

spigot 2011-09-05 21:36

Good stuff! The music was simple but very atmospheric, that helped a lot.
