LD21 — Escape

Close Your Eyes by Coriander 2011-08-25T08:24:00

Nice concept. Unfortunately the game mechanics are not polished enough to make it effective.

I also thought the monsters would kill me with my eyes open, and was disappointed to find out they only block me and don't eat me alive. You know, like the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal. :)

epacse by Marach 2011-08-26T04:39:00

One of my favourite entries! Such a COOL game. Lemmings-look-alike character that escaped from a cryo tube of sorts. Particle simulation physics fun with lovely lighting/shadowing. Good level design and the right level of challenging.

The water level was maybe a bit too tedious however. Jumping on sinking dirt while being in water is a difficult task. The sounds were annoying so I had to mute it.

The ending was rather disappointing, so I tried twice to see if I could jump over it, to no avail. Then I read there was a secret ending... Hmm, I just had to find out! Only by looking at the source code did I figure out where the trick was. The secret level (not so much of an ending?) was pretty sweet.

Hotel Escape by pgil 2011-08-25T10:42:00

Technically impressive and mind-boggingly cool visuals.

Took me a good 100 deaths to finish. :)

The Remnants by CoffeeOnimal 2011-08-24T01:35:00

You should explain the controls, if any. As it stands, I don't think there is any game here. Anyway, I hope you gained some experience for the next LD!

@Gornova: Since CoffeeOnimal participated in the Jam (not compo) s/he doesn't have to publish source code.

Moustache Chick by joekinley 2011-08-23T05:25:00

I found the controls rather dodgy, but otherwise the game is neat. I really like the tune.

End of file by FireSlash 2011-08-25T09:43:00

Awesome game! The upgrade system was what made it fun and addictive. Music was also good and engaging. The ending was really funny. The software really became free to do what it wanted! My OS didn't seem to like that, heh heh.

BitScape Goat by daandruff 2011-08-26T03:02:00

The bad.
I found it annoying to randomly press switches without knowing their effect; that's not my cup of puzzle. The sound was kinda glitchy, especially when running fast (Windows version, the web version was even worse for that). And I don't mean the glitchiness/grittyness of the tune.

The good.
The graphics were impressive and fun to just look at, down to the meter bar and the text boxes! The music is just awesome. I actually left the game running in the background so I can listen to it. A 5-6 second loop of gritty lo-fi bliss. :)

Overall: a solid game with average gameplay. As you say, Epic WIN!

Looking at your blog posts.. I think I prefer the newer style (hard to say, the other style looked neat and colourful too). Perhaps you could have used the picket fences? Paint them animated rainbow or something (not an actual suggestion, though it *would* look trippy with the sinusoidal landscape).

Relic Run by Cell 2011-08-24T05:58:00

I liked the destructible environment and the particle effects. Enhancing the graphics would be nice, but be careful not to overdo it and saturate it, as it's already a very hectic game. As for sound, the music seemed okay, but I found the sound effects annoying.

The Villainous Villa by EricTheCoolDude 2011-08-24T06:22:00

Fun stuff! Sadly too short.

A Black and White Escape by HighQuality 2011-08-25T08:17:00

The physics seem broken, I couldn't always pick a rock or kill a guard. Also, I was confused that the walls are actually 3D and that I can walk behind it (i.e. the camera is more angled than pure top-down).

Overall neat game.

Many_Many_Spiders by rom016 2011-08-24T03:34:00

WASD keys to move.

The game is clearly unbalanced, the spiders are too fast and too big and the hallways too narrow. Wasn't able to get past the third level. A flamethrower would be neat!

This is one of the most annoying file hosts I've seen (2 waits, and word verification). I recommend you create a Dropbox account.

Soul Hellscape by Rudy 2011-08-26T01:42:00

Cool concept, but poor/unbalanced mechanics. I'm waiting for mana most of the time.

Escape Velocity by Murphy 2011-08-23T05:57:00

I should know better than to steal a black hole gun. ;) Riding an event horizon is hard, and this little guy can whiz through a dozen of them! Fun game, if rather buggy. The first time around I reached the end level without knowing it, I was just stuck in a blank grey level.

Cosmic Heist by Kevin Wells 2011-08-24T03:59:00

Man, the music is really messed up (in a good sort of way), and so are the sound bits in the menu... feels very alien and oppressive (hmm, kinda fits your nickname:)).

The controls are really slick.

YRGBO by nuria 2011-08-24T04:30:00

Download link is down again it seems. :/

Saharan Scurry by Tubbimora 2011-08-24T04:09:00

Decent game. Simple yet challenging.

Those tanks sure are dumb! They step on mines (but don't blow up). And they're supposed to chase me but they go right past me while I wave at them and smile.

@agersant: You most likely don't have XNA 4.0 installed. You can get it here:

Warden's Burden by Trancelucid 2011-08-22T23:43:00

You may need the MS Visual C++ 2010 redistributable DLLs, available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=5555

Also, on some computers the game will look "paused". There's a problem with the physics in that velocity is always zero, so nothing moves. Sorry! Next time I'll ask more friends for play-testing.

Followed by Pvaiun 2011-08-26T02:00:00

Fun puzzle game, with an awesome narrative (I was thinking that only 4-5 lines into the game:)). Good use of the theme, too. Oh yeah, and that cello music? Good stuff. I just read that you played it yourself, nice. I had read before playing of Logic Pro, so I thought it was just a (good) arrangement.

Red, The Dragon by Kiloku 2011-08-23T04:45:00

Weird game. :) Also, I really don't like the idea of setup.exe and polluting my registry, so I recompiled it instead.

Tongue, tip of the by Nizan 2011-08-23T05:11:00

Interesting concept! I like how it's not only the dialog choices that changes the game, but also that it's the gameplay that changes the dialog.

Lightbulb Robot Escape by Jonatron 2011-08-24T03:23:00

I like the mechanized lightbulb idea, especially with its big round eyes.

However, negative points for poor control keys (who uses Alt key to jump?), and for the installer polluting my start menu (and most likely my registry too).

BATHOS by johanp 2011-08-24T06:46:00

Very nice art! I also just loved the keys that kept falling, of all shapes and sizes (wrench, credit card, knife..). One of my favourite games this LD, very ingenious take on the theme. :)

Seriously, you need to make a full-length adventure game!

TREASURES by pythong 2011-08-26T00:02:00

There are several gameplay issues, mostly collision-related, but also with trying to avoid certain monsters, so that was frustrating. The end boss fight is pretty neat! Couldn't finish it, since the ghost seems to take the full square of his area and that always gets me.

Aside from that, the game is fairly fun. It reminds me a lot of Spelunky.
