LD25 — You are the Villain

Doctor Spandex by Cássio Eduardo 2012-12-21T17:14:00

Very nice graphics! I especially like the old comic book style of the title screen (and other static screens.) The "stairs mode" takes some time to get used to but it allows some quick escapes.

Fun game, I loved popping from behind furniture and smacking down the guards while they were surprised :)

I only wish it was possible to continue from the last stage played instead of having to start over once you get caught (or did I do something wrong?)

Villainous! by gritfish 2012-12-17T17:58:00

Beautiful pixel graphics! Also, I like that you can select the villain and hero in any combination of women, men and goat.

Took me a little while to get used to the tile-based movement. Also, sometimes the heroes spawn too close and grab you right away. On the other hand, I loved it when a hero saved a victim just before the train reached them.

EvilCakes by FrederickK 2012-12-21T17:48:00

Interesting game, the visual style makes me think of boardgames. For some reason I could only play by opening the .blend file in Blender. Windows insisted the .exe file was not a valid executable (go figure.)

I read your postmortem about using BGE and it was very informative too.

Goat Murderer by MAT4DOR 2012-12-17T20:14:00

This game has a nice retro feel. Also, I love the friendly fire from the farmers.

The only way I managed to survive was to keep hidden and run around from time to time getting the stuff from goats killed by friendly fire, eventually taking some shots in the process.

As suggestions, maybe the farmers could pause to reload their guns from time to time or fire in the general direction but not exactly at the player's position.

Split 'Em Up by chambers 2012-12-17T14:50:00

I had a lot of fun playing this game. The visuals of the different teams of meddling kids are great. Seeing them scared and running through the windows is very funny -- and then you think "oh wait, I AM having fun at scaring kids and making them jump from the third floor."

Congrats also for the game interface: it clearly presents the information needed by the player.

I know it was a matter of time and I think your priorities were right but I can't help thinking about how this game would feel with some sound effects -- especially for the scared kids :)

BOTWALK by namuol 2012-12-21T21:16:00

I had a lot of fun playing this game. It's interesting how at the same time you play a giant engine of destruction and it feels like you're learning to walk. Powerful and vulnerable -- very nice! The graphics are lovely too.

Stomping is a joy, and I would often catch myself mashing hard on the keyboard as if mimicking the weight of the robot's steps.

More Afraid of You by TomSmizzle 2012-12-21T21:01:00

Great soundtrack and nice narrative!

Captain Torrent by sev_inf 2012-12-18T00:49:00

Fun and humorous game, nice graphics too. I liked the "media industry damage" tally at the end, and the choice of using the same "pirate flag" as life meter for the other ships.

The short pause after three or so shots was a good idea too, otherwise it would be a matter of spamming cannonballs all day.

The only suggestion I have is to draw the cannonballs in front of the black sail -- especially the ones fired by the enemy ship.

Sebastian by Amoaeba Junior 2012-12-21T17:36:00

Really, really funny! Great concept and execution.

The effect of the acid rain is visually impacting... genocide at the touch of a button. At the first time I triggered it, it made me pause for a while thinking "what have I done?!"

And by the way, loved the Amoeba Jr. logo too :)

Missile Rider by rylgh 2012-12-21T23:35:00

Nice concept! It takes a while to get used to the controls (particularly moving over the missile to steer and remembering to grab it at the proper times) but it is fun.

As a suggestion, I think it would be helpful to have a more zoomed-out view or some sort of mini map. At times it is hard to know if there are ships or missiles nearby.

O TUTT'I CAVI LESI by Capro 2012-12-21T23:06:00

Nice interpretation of the theme, and the hand-drawn graphics look great. I also found the game quite difficult but hey, if it's a punishment for the villain's actions, it should be.

Sword of Truth by rinaka 2012-12-19T22:02:00

Thanks for all the comments :) @Worse: yeah, I wanted to have more story elements and cutscenes but I had to remove more and more as I saw I wouldn't have enough time to make all the necessary content. I'll try to expand after the voting period. @GeorgeBroussard, zenmumbler: thanks for the suggestion, I'll try to implement it after the voting period.

Make It Black by zenmumbler 2012-12-18T01:05:00

Nice game, spewing this black bile to cover the world is fun indeed. Also, you were very creative with the hazard pits -- they fit your concept but that's not something I'd expect to be there.

On the graphics side, I really liked the clouds and the darkening of the scenario. Very cool.

ECHO CHAMBER by Loren 2012-12-21T22:50:00

Very nice, experimental and moody. Lovely use of typography as graphics -- the battles of comments look so good. I found gameplay intuitive and always stressful: you're either desperate to get attention or anxious to see if the critics will get to you. Contrary to some comments, IMO it is a necessity that the difficulty or gameplay does not evolve over time. After all, you're fighting to avoid change, right?

Micro Mob by chrismwaite 2012-12-21T18:12:00

Interesting strategy game. The graphics look nice and are consistent. I only wish there was a bit more feedback on what's going on at each city block (maybe tint the buildings blue or red? I really don't know.)

I like the rhythm given by the flow of new recruits. In the beginning it makes the game almost feel turn-based as you have to keep spending all your goons on new territory to avoid falling behind. Then the real fun begins as you have to decide how many to keep on reserve to recover lost territories and what and when to attack.

Purple Fingers by heloheu 2012-12-17T15:10:00

This game hooked my mind as I played it and lots of thoughts came by. The idea of the corruption spreading is nice. I wish the other denizens would notice the corruption and make sad remarks about it, just so I'd feel more guilty about it.

The graphics and animations are lovely. I wish the wilted flower from the scene transitions was used in the levels too, as the terrain gets corrupted.

A small village by EdoMiyamoto 2012-12-21T23:42:00

I liked the soundtrack and the graphics style, particularly the faces of the characters.

Evil Santa Rampage by TheSyntheticBrain 2012-12-17T17:42:00

Funny game, burning presents in what might be Santa's own fireplace is villainous, indeed.

Gameplay reminds me of arcade games of old. The nostalgia is enhanced by the "jumpy" movement that makes me think of Game&Watch and the like. I didn't rate Audio as another reviewer has pointed it is not original.

If you'd allow a suggestion, granting a score bonus if the player burns multiple presents before Santa extinguishes the fireplace would be good to value player skill.

Zombie fight 'em by Chewynouget 2012-12-26T11:40:00

Nice concept! I hope you make an extended version after the compo is over with sound effects for the zombies and shots.

You are the Evil Overlord by Worse 2012-12-21T18:46:00

Very fun game, lots of stuff to like: it's indirect control scheme, the mood, the humor. The stuff that the goons speak is great too.

I understand that this is due to the compo time limit but I really wish there was sound -- a jumble of action movie sound clips (punches, shots, groans...) would be awesome IMO.

Carnage by SXPanda 2012-12-17T19:53:00

Very nice game! The special powers look good, and smashing soldiers is fun.

It would have been nice to have the option of a chase camera (following behind the demon) and a reminder when there's only, say, 15 seconds left.

Crime Scene by saulotti 2012-12-17T15:59:00

Very nice game! Keeps the tension about finding the killer. As others have already pointed out, great job on interpreting the theme too.

While playing I kept hitting Q and E to try to strafe around the crowd so I'd like to suggest adding those if it doesn't break anything.

Damsels by RexSpaceman 2012-12-26T11:29:00

I loved the sound effects and the villain's laughter, really nice! Good idea also on all the remixing that goes on in this game: atari-inspired gameplay with the compo theme, classic villain/damsel with modern cars.... very cool.

Kill? by feili 2012-12-21T17:23:00

Very good modeling. Very moody too! While playing I kept thinking about where this could go without the 48h time limit... maybe more objects to interact, so that the player can find out how things got to this point. And maybe an option for the villain to shoot himself?

Hamster Poker by BiceMaster 2012-12-17T19:33:00

Interesting game, very grim. I've heard of energy harvesting but this is new :P Is it possible to kill the hamster from overworking?

Atomic Creep Spawner!! by deepnight 2012-12-21T21:28:00

Fantastic game! The most complete and polished entry I've played so far. Fun and challenging -- and the taunts the heroes speak add to that.

The World is Mine! by matthias_zarzecki 2012-12-21T23:22:00

Good concept and user interface. Graphics are nice and the procedural details (goon names, cities) are cool. As others pointed out, it would be great to see this game continue to evolve to include more opposition.

Universe's Next Top Villain by Floko 2012-12-18T01:23:00

This is a great game, I laughed a lot while playing. Trying to find the combinations is really fun. Congrats!

Sinister Simon by Puffi 2012-12-26T11:13:00

Interesting game fitting the theme. The mini-games match the activities well (which isn't always the case) and the bits of humor are nice.

The safe and hack mini-games were too hard for my poor reflexes. That, however, highlights your decision to add a time-independent mini-game that works as an alternative too.

Unhappy Holidays! by GeorgeBroussard 2012-12-21T19:01:00

Awesome game! The "big pixel" sprites and blood particles look really nice and the sound effects match them well.

During the game it is easy to get caught up and not notice you've emptied your clip on the zombie horde before they get a bite. Surely the interface shows the amount of ammo available but sometimes I was too focused on the zombies. So if I were to make a suggestion, I'd say that an additional cue for the player when he's out of ammo could be helpful (maybe a "click" sound when the player fires a weapon without ammo...)
