Really fantastic chiptune music! I also really like the Atari 2600 style.

Really fantastic chiptune music! I also really like the Atari 2600 style.
This game looks beautiful. I loved the vibrant colours and the minimalist but striking animation and design. The UI is simple, clean and very easy to understand. Your music was pleasant and cheerful - but the looping is not very smooth, there's a noticeable gap before the track starts again, which became a bit distracting as it was quite obvious. The stretching, twisting sounds of the growing tree are great - I especially like the "super growth" sound. Overall I really like the concept of the game and its a clever interpretation of the theme.
However, the single biggest problem with this game is that its very easy. I reached up to 900m on my first playthrough before I ended the game myself. I did not really feel an increase in difficulty the further that I progressed. The light rays move faster and become thinner as the tree grows higher, but i found that those elements didn't really make the game any harder. In fact, it actually seemed to be getting *easier* as the game went on. An increase in difficulty could be achieved by gradually introducing new obstacles and hazards to mix things up. While playing the game, I was thinking of some ideas of what these obstacles and hazards might be:
1) A moving object (maybe a dark cloud?) that blocks the rays of the sun as it passes over them.
2)"Dark" rays (acid rain?) that make your leaves wilt and fall off faster. This will force the player to not just wiggle the mouse willy-nilly all over the place, but to closely follow the light rays - or else they'll be punished.
I think some kind of added elements like these will help in creating a gradual increase in difficulty.
Very fun old-school space shooter. The art is great and the music, while simple, is very catchy.
This game is really well written. I loved the detailed descriptions of the locations and monsters of this fantasy world. I'm impressed with the sheer number of options there were, and I'm sure I haven't even tried half of them.
Excellent game!
I love the sketchy, comic-like art style and the character and enemy design. I liked your sound design but there were a few things that could be improved upon. The main character's footstep sounds were a bit weak and needed to be more impactful. Also, I think that white screen fade transition between scenes when you start the game or restart after dying needed some kind of sound because it felt a little bit empty without it.
As for the gameplay, it's sometimes hard to tell whether you're actually on the same level as an enemy or not, as sometimes attacks that I thought would definitely hit went straight through enemies. I eventually figured out the range of attacks but for the first few minutes it made fighting enemies a bit confusing. As others here have also said, once you're trapped in a group of enemies, its often impossible to do anything. If you were going to expand on this game, a block or dodge button could give the player a chance to get out of those sticky situations.
Very funny and clever concept and a really good interpretation of the theme. It was frustrating and tedious but in a hilarious way - where I was always laughing as i struggled to get this ridiculous contraption to work. i love how you are left on your own to figure out what each of the functions on the box does and how they are gradually brought in. The music and sound design is also great, I liked the crowd noises giving you an idea of the "real" world outside of this retro game you're playing and the crowd applause at the end was hilarious.
Overall, excellent game!
Very beautiful visuals and fun gameplay. However, I feel that the blues/country and western acoustic feel of the music doesn't really match the 80's outrun aesthetic of the visuals. The game over explosion really needed a sound effect as well. Otherwise, this was a great game.
Really like the green-tinted, Game Boy screen aesthetic. I liked the atmosphere, though i feel that just a little bit of subtle music during the boss battles would help. The gameplay is very challenging but fair. However, I do think the sensitivity of the spikes is maybe just a little bit too much. Many times I died just from very barely touching them from the side. I found the controls a bit awkward and uncomfortable on a keyboard, playing on a gamepad seems like it would be much better. i think the shooting concept is really cool and unique and could possibly have been used more.
The only other thing i'd like to mention is that I think something like a very short death animation before resetting would be good. It was quite jarring and it made me jump a bit when I'd die in the later parts of a stage and it would suddenly jump-cut back to the beginning. A short death animation or panning the camera back to the beginning would help to refocus the player.
The animation and sound design are really cute! Music was nicely atmospheric, however I think there really should have been a different theme at the end when you reach the light to enhance Spooky's sense of relief - some very peaceful and calm music.
I liked the zoom effect at the beginning of each level, but the effect probably was a little bit too extreme and could have bit of a wider frame.
Well written, smart and funny dialogue and an interesting setting. I loved the ending as well.
Very nice looking snake-like game. I also liked the bouncing off of walls and pills to reduce size. However, the snake's movement is a little bit slow.
Wonderfully simple but effective interpretation of the theme. The design is clean and easy to read as well.
Good use of the theme and very relatable concept. Good humour as well, I particularly loved all the names of the study textbooks.
Excellent and very atmospheric sound design and art. Even though the visual design is so simple, the detailed audio soundscapes are really immersive and illustrate the dystopian setting well. The only little thing I would suggest would be to have something to indicate which direction a soldier is facing. Since they are symmetrical circles, it was sometimes hard to tell if i was in front of them or behind them. Otherwise, great game!
A very polished game with high quality visuals and audio. The battle action UI is very slick and stylish. The controls took me a little time to get used to but once I got it down gameplay is very enjoyable. The only little criticism i would have to say is that I think the highlighted action could have been shown a bit clearer (different font colour etc.) as you have to make a choice very fast and sometimes I wasn't quite sure what I had currently selected.
Overall an excellent game.
I quite like the visual aesthetic and the music's pretty good. I feel like there could have been more going on with the minigame though, maybe having to keep in time to a rhythm or having to memorise and repeat a series of arrow presses would have added a bit more depth to those segments and made them more engaging.
