LD38 — A Small World

World Jump by stefvanschie 2017-05-09T12:55:22Z

I'll join everyone in saying that this is simple and fun game. While animation was weird it got kinda halarious as the game was speeding up faster and faster. Loved the Gameboy color I got awarded and hand a laugh at awards for American and French levels. I had a very hard time with Australian level.

Sometimes objects would generate just so that you can't jump over them as they were taking way too much space in length. And jumping in the middle between them, if there was space to do, was ineffective too as you could not instantly jump again. So highscore is directly tied to how lucky you are.

Mass Impact by Studdert249 2017-05-09T03:53:48Z

I like the game a lot and it was very fun to play. And while it didn't make it any less fun and it's, probably not important for an arcade game compared to a simulation, I got very confused about speed of the asteroid in different orbits.

The longer orbit should take longer to complete, but it seemed in your game any orbit distance was taking same ~9 seconds to complete. While it was not as noticeable with other planets, that made asteroid you play move at snail pace close to the sun and zoom around when far away, which should be the other way around.

Take following with a handful of salt as I might be getting it wrong myself, but roughly the idea is that the formula for a circular orbit's speed is gravitational constant G multiplied by the summary mass of both objects divided by radius of the orbit: GM/r.

So the shorter the radius of your orbit the higher the gravity force affecting the object which means it has to go faster to stay in that orbit and not fall. If the orbit radius is longer the gravity force is smaller and it takes less speed to stay in that orbit.

But still, from gameplay perspective it would just mean that you would have to reduce your orbit radius to overtake instead of increasing it, so great job anyway!

ANTIVIRUS by KappaIX 2017-05-11T08:01:10Z

Great game. Reminded me of good old arcade cabinets.

Earth, 3568 by BoltKey 2017-05-09T20:57:39Z

Thank you, now I can see why I'm not working in NASA flight control! It was quite challenging and very fun. I found it absolutely hilarious how ships I'm missed sometimes would return from offscreen, make multiple circles around different planets just to hit the right one by pure luck! Also very nice job with physics!

SmallHexWorld by japes 2017-05-10T00:00:21Z

So far the best I got is 5854, and while hex and turn based games are my weakness I was never good at planning ahead. Really entertaining mechanics that wakes the slumbering min-maxer in me!

Edit: Just did another try and scored 7827 by shamelessly copying stuntddude's layout, really shows how bad I am at planing compared to others! ^^

A SMALL 「WORLD」 by Azargaz 2017-05-09T21:11:32Z

Fun though morally objectionable game. I was not very familiar with JoJo universe, at first I didn't understand what did you mean by "Dio Brando simulator", but quick search fixed that and events of the game made more sense to me.

Plutiny by peringo 2017-05-09T13:12:41Z

Oh that meanie Earth thinking she can dictate who can be in her planet club!

Absolutely loved the graphics and and sound design! And you even put a progression system in! I've send almost whole hour completely absorbed by your game! Also thank you very much for volume sliders, as I play in headphones and have no volume slider it's a crucial feature to me. Surprisingly, it's a rare thing to see.

Felt not like an average jam game but as a full commercial product made by a professional studio!

CarefulSaurus by gene-z 2017-05-09T04:03:06Z

Good idea but dinosaur's hitbox is a bit larger than it should be, which makes you hit the cars and pedestrians even if you seemingly should safely avoid them.

A Small Word by droweed 2017-05-11T09:12:16Z

Very nice, and animation of players attack is great. But I wish the words were above the enemies though. You miss all the action that goes on staring in the upper right corner.

Wake Up ! by GoZz 2017-05-09T12:28:56Z

This is the most beautiful game I've seen this jam! The graphic design is just superb, I loved the background animations contrast between the two worlds. Though short the game felt more like a demo of a an actual commercial product rather than a jam game!

The Deep by GertJohnny 2017-05-11T08:21:50Z

This is so great and well polished! I've absolutely loved the atmosphere. Simply one of the best games this LD and for sure the most polished one!

Bio Noid by zetashocker 2017-05-11T09:19:30Z

Great game! Reminded me of good old Contra hard Corps.

English Country Garden Simulator by mralex 2017-05-11T09:32:26Z

While I never was into gardening I found it surprisingly entertaining! Great game!

Globe Trot by Richard Michael Smith 2017-05-09T13:37:22Z

I found the hot dog aliens very amusing and game had a lot of drive to it. And as other people already mentioned camera is a problem.

With regret I must say that for me it became a bigger issue. It was quite often rapidly changing direction. At first it was just disorientating when ship suddenly turning 90 or 180 degrees in random direction but after a while I started to get dizzy and had to stop playing.

Though I've enjoyed the time I had while playing it!

Exploroka by krunoslav 2017-05-11T09:42:53Z

I was learning procedural generation of terrain not long ago myself and I find your game absolutely stunning from a technical point of view. But I wish there was a way too zoom out or a map, as I've managed to lose track of the house that gave me the quest. Still very impressive experience!

Nick Survives! by MiSou 2017-05-03T20:06:17Z

You can cut down a tree by eating oranges next to it. (By clicking with oranges\apples equipped on the tree)

Flowers by danvil 2017-05-11T09:04:44Z

A very unique idea for a game! I like how you made flowers actually grow, but I have to agree with Wakobu that lack of music subtracts greatly from the experience.

A Small Worlds Repair Man by callum 2017-05-11T08:59:14Z

An interesting idea and I liked the car handling. Was amusing to drift around cities in circles! But I think the car mounted asteroid defense was a bit too much. Also I wish game had some kind of scoring system.

A Mote in the Dark by Kirenio 2017-05-04T05:51:01Z

@gozz Thank you for reply and glad you liked it!

By default with UI enabled there's a circle around every mote that represents energy left in it. Maybe you hid the UI by accident?

A Mote in the Dark by Kirenio 2017-05-09T12:02:02Z

@richard-michael-smith Thank you for your feedback! I've made a detailed explanation on how the game works. I should have done that earlier.

P.S. I hope **formatting** I've used is not too **obnoxious**!

A Mote in the Dark by Kirenio 2017-05-09T20:40:04Z

@boltkey @azargaz Sadly I didn't have time to include a proper visual in-game explanation other than the text you see right before the game starts. And I'm afraid my overcomplicated explanation here might have only made it worse. The only thing player has to do is to stay alive as long as she/he can while maintaining as many nodes at the same time as she/he can or desires to.

**What I wanted** was to provide a bite sized but complete experience. I've ended up achieving that with artificially limiting the duration of each playthrough by gradually increasing the difficulty. I decided to do so that potential player can experience a cohesive game with beginning and an end, while not getting bored out and quitting it. **While doing so** also providing player a control over difficulty of the game by giving an ability to increase the amount of active nodes player has to manage.

**What I failed** to do was to provide a good risk-reward mechanic by undertuning the amount of points player scores from having multiple motes active. I believe that would be way too major change in how the game will flow to fix after the deadline. Oh well, live and learn.

**What I hope** is that players will have maybe 2 or 3 runs and 3 to 6 minutes of fun yet as challenging as they want it to be experience. Personally I would consider that a victory.

A Mote in the Dark by Kirenio 2017-05-09T23:36:33Z

@japes Thank you very much for the feedback! The in depth explanation of in-game mechanics are there due to a request, I don't expect people to 120% understand internal workings of the game. Though I agree that rushed "wall of text" explanation given before the game starts is not good at doing it's job.

@korvyashka Thank you very much for the feedback too! I glad you've enjoyed the atmosphere of the game! And I totally agree that lack of any indication on status of the orbs was a huge mistake on my side.

MiniPolis by korvyashka 2017-05-10T00:20:05Z

I absolutely loved the management aspect of the game and how it was gradually pushing your limits! Shameful to admit but I barely managed to manage 4 cities. And on my 3rd run I've already reached 11 cities! Loved song you've used too, it reminded me of a one old game I used to play as a child.

One thing I've noticed was a blue line blinking on the left side of the screen, you can see it down on the screenshot. Sometimes it was going though the whole screen though.
