LD32 — An Unconventional Weapon

Cat by Thijs Tak 2015-04-27T14:03:00

I'm a sucker for games about cats. This game is no exception. Fantastic mood. I feel like the controls are spot on, I actually feel like a magical cat. The audio gets me in the mood to figure out who this nemesis is. I like the simplistic style of the graphics, though I would revisit it and add some finishing touches like shading. I had a lot of fun playing, as it had an innovative narrative. However, besides the main character being a cat, it's weapons don't feel unconventional (as far as video-games go). However I feel that is a trivial complaint, and that on it's own I think you have a franchise in the making. I highly suggest you read the junior fantasy novel series, "Warriors" by Erin Hunter. Great job, and good idea!

Very interesting. I'd like to see more.

Bubble Becky by Dining Philosopher 2015-04-21T04:00:00

Very good. Put this on greenlight!

Dear Chancellor by Ludonaut 2015-04-20T23:27:00

I don't get the reference but this is hilarious and so fun!

Expand-O-Ray by Levi D. Smith 2015-04-27T05:43:00

I loved the mood of this game. Whoever did the voice-work sounded like they had a lot of fun. The visuals did their job. It was a pretty fun game, and I could see this evolving into a very engaging, wholesome experience!

N.O.D.E. by SimonLarsen 2015-04-21T03:32:00

I love it! The art, the sound, the string thingy!

Waffle Warrior by Super Hamster 2015-04-28T06:08:00

The game kept a consistent mood, and made me crave waffles. It was funny to see the bad guys happily eating waffles until BOOM they burst open. The graphics could have been a bit better, but they did their job. This was spot-on with the theme of the jam, and I like that the character puts the waffle down as opposed to throwing it. It was pretty fun and innovative, but overall I don't think there is much more I can say about it.

Gunpowder Engine by ShawnFeatherly 2015-04-28T01:35:00

I enjoyed the mood of this game, as it didn't take itself too seriously. It had a good sense of humour, but I wasn't left in stitches. The audio itself added a lot of personality to the game, but got old kind of fast. I wasn't a fan of the graphics, but that didn't seem to be your biggest concern. It went well with the theme, and was very unconventional. It was innovative, but I will be honest and say I didn't really have fun. It felt too easy.

End of the Line by ljdp 2015-04-20T23:45:00

I feel like you could get away with having the scrolling be just a tiiiiny bit faster. I find it can't keep up with me that well. If this game continues to be worked on, I'd suggest giving the robots glowing eyes.

Into The Fray by Naked_Samurai 2015-04-27T07:17:00

I feel as though I had some fun, but the combat is a bit too abstract. What am I using to block the paths? The mood of the game reminded me of stealth classics, and the audio, although repetitive was fairly well thought out. In the future, I'd consider changing the tempo and key of the song for each enemy killed. I feel like you are onto something here... Keep making games, and don't be afraid to get messy.

SSZB - Save the soul of Zlaya babka(evil old lady) by CAT_IN_THE_DARK_WOOD 2015-04-28T05:59:00

The mood of this game is spot on to how it feels to listen to hooligans marching over to the club at night. It has a great sense of humour, and incorporated it's audio into the game mechanics (the louder the music is, the less health you have). The graphics are charming and it is so spot-on for this jam's theme. Tons of fun, with a pinch of innovation. Overall this was a great game.

Terrornado by xbcw 2015-04-28T06:13:00

The mood was great. Good sense of humour. Suitable audio. The graphics were very child-like and charming. You stuck with the jam's theme very well. It was fun, innovative and you deserve a pat on the back.

Loquacious Lepus by Lacaranian 2015-04-28T01:02:00

You guys have a good sense of audience, and after I figured out how to play the game got a lot better. The mood of the game feels intentional and well executed. I thought it was pretty funny, but it could have used some more dialogue. The audio itself was pretty catchy, but some mixing could keep it silly while sounding a bit cleaner. The graphics themselves do their job, but otherwise weren't anything I'd write home about. It kept with the theme of the jam pretty well, though. I didn't fun it that fun, but I did enjoy spelling words.

My advice would be to separate the tree sprites into two separate entities. The bottom could be what you collide with, and the top half could be walked through.

Arduino Cat by unprompted 2015-04-27T06:13:00

Amazing! This is one of my favourites! The mood was great, really made me feel like I was a kid on a old computer. I ended up laughing so hard when I made my cat run into a wall. The audio wasn't anything to write home about, but it did it's job. It went pretty well with the theme and was a lot of fun. Great job innovating a fun game that made me feel good to play!

Extinction Explosion!! by sugarbyte 2015-04-21T02:59:00

What an unconventional weapon!

Dungeon Balls by Teesquared 2015-04-28T01:17:00

The mood was very unorthodox and outworldly, which was refreshing. It wasn't really funny, but I don't think it was trying to be. The audio was catchy, but a bit too repetitive. Maybe bring it down a key? The graphics were okay, but I feel like they were place holders. I think it fit the theme of the jam very well, as the balls were unconventional. I had fun, it was pretty innovative and held my attention. Good work.

6RAVITY by MFEP 2015-04-27T07:36:00

First thing I notice is that this game had a very familiar mood. Something about first person puzzle games brings this bitter-sweet sense of calm. The graphics were alright, it was innovative and I caught myself having fun during those tricky moments. The audio was soothing, and fit the game. My main criticism is that the gravity-gun seemed more like a tool than a weapon.

Trouble Cliff by catchthefloaty 2015-04-28T05:30:00

The overall mood of the game was unique. I don't think the game was trying to be funny, but it had a charm to it that makes me think I would like these characters if I got to see more of them. The audio is alright, I think the main character's voice would have been better a bit lower-pitch, though. The graphics do their job, and kind of remind me of Doctor Suess. It fit the jam's theme really well and was overall innovative and fun.

Octo Defence by fabsenet 2015-04-27T05:11:00

I feel like I would have given a higher overall rating if there were a boss, or a tank to soak up damage and keep my lasers off of the other enemies. Add a couple more enemy types and watch the replay value skyrocket.

Eye in the Sky by OnePixelMonster 2015-04-27T06:41:00

So I played this one by myself, though I didn't have much trouble (I imagine part of the challenge is cooperation). This feels like it would be really fun to play with someone I was intimate with. The overall mood was calm and relaxing. I found the jokes to be cute. The graphics were alright, nothing wrong with them, though I think there needs to be a bit more variety with lighting. I had fun, but this may be one of the more innovative games on here.

Scoria by MrTroy 2015-04-27T05:27:00

I feel like this has so much potential. I've been thinking of new cards and rules during play, and it made the game so enjoyable. This game could be expanded on so well, the possibilities are endless.

A few ideas in my head:
1. More soldiers (obviously) but also...
2. Each soldier grants the player 1 card, You may use all of the cards on one guy, or 1 for all. However you want to distribute them per turn.
3. The more unit-types you add, the more complicated you deck becomes, and therefore, harder to play.
4. Customizable decks.

Radisheriff by Ourson 2015-04-20T22:42:00

This is staying in my game collection. I love the reload mechanics. I'd love to make a giant game out of this. Could you imagine both Co-op and Competitive LAN with more weapons?!

Insomnia by java the hutt 2015-04-28T05:39:00

I feel like this game is trolling me, and you are self aware of the collision detection problems. If not, it was a great try. Also, I noticed that DW/Hank Hill in the centre. It was pretty damn funny, lol.

Vacuum Maiden by UnconventionalFusion 2015-04-27T06:51:00

I couldn't quite sense the mood of the game, as it was put together in a fairly abstract manner. I didn't find it necessarily funny, but it has a clever premise. I think there is a very innovative game brewing in here, and that you owe yourself a pat on the back for that. (:

Shady Business by cnoel 2015-04-27T05:49:00

I feel like it is an interesting take on the classic, "Breakout". It would have been interesting to see more enemy and ball types.

Pacifist Piper by Pete Hufnagel 2015-04-27T06:28:00

Out of every weapon I've reviewed, not only is this one aesthetically unconventional, but it plays unconventionally, too. If this were based on that alone, then I think you should win. Fun, innovative, and kept me hooting and hollering until I won.

Tune by rattyinc 2015-04-27T10:33:00

If you had more time, I would suggest adding different audio tracks that change to be more frantic as you miss enemies. However, that is easier said than done. The theme was excellent, and executed well. I had fun with the game, and it was worth my time. One thing, though:

I think that moving down should be done by holding "s", and that as long as you are holding the button, you will keep falling.

Food Fighter 2000 by sP0CkEr2 2015-04-28T01:27:00

The mood of this game was great. It was fun hearing the kids yell, "Teacher!". It had a good sense of humor, too. I wasn't fond of the music, as it was all over the place and a bit too high pitch for my taste. The graphics were alright, nothing I can say about them. It went with the theme well, seeing as you fight with food. However, because you were using a gun, I couldn't call it a "unconventional weapon", as it were the ammo that was unconventional. It was playable, but couldn't hold my attention for very long. Overall, I think a lot of these issues have already been looked at (As you said, you are waiting for feedback). I'm glad I got to review your game.
