LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Into the Castle by groverburger 2021-05-01T09:58:28Z

Fun take on the theme, tried to cheese things by using the gun knockback to make higher jumps but didn't manage to break anything. Which that the levels when back a layer a bit more often as it made for interesting puzzles. Final boss was cool and slightly frustrating. Love it!

Visually a very pleasing game with a good difficulty curve. Although I hoped there was a bit more depth in it as there is only one thing to interact with on the screen, smaller or bigger blobs. With a bit more space where you loosely follow the player around and maybe some walls as obstacles this could turn in a beautiful fully fleshed out game. Good job!

@cppchriscpp Thanks for the feedback! We ironed out the bugs that were allowed and we are definitely fans of some narrative games. Always nice to do something unique :)

@carraka I guess you're right although we kinda didn't think about that too much as we wrote the script in a couple of hours. We surely wanted to get to the deeper part of it to get a better understanding of Rose as a character but we'll keep that for another time ;)

Cool game! I love the puzzles and the lighthearted humour. The concept and the way you implemented going deeper are so fun and tie in with the whole world you created! Small tip: you could possibly reduce the amount of buttons by one if interacting is the same one as going deeper ;)

One of the few games where i played it through and enjoyed from start to end without any frustration or anything. The mood is set, the story adds to it and the darkness is ready. Beautiful hand drawn art which fits the theme and goes well together with all the sprites. I hope that this game will get more content in the future as for a game jam this was too short to fully explore the story.

So critical feedback: Maybe some different enemies will make it more interesting. Maybe bigger ones that move slower for example. Other thing that was slightly unclear was that the sprite at the top was for the timer as it doesn't have any recognisable shape.

Overall good and enjoyable!

The concept of the game is very neat with the light dropping once you collected the package! Like @deepinthewoods mentioned the flare idea was also what came into my mind immediately. Also it would be nice to have some things like places to heal or checkpoints. Maybe even just new levels? As it is cool to have to retrace your steps in the dark but after the third time it kind of wears of and becomes repetitive instead. Also think that the controls could be slightly faster and snappier to give the player more momentum in the game without changing the difficulty. Overall great job!

6 Feet Under by theStoff 2021-04-28T20:59:41Z

This game is sooo polished and nice to play. It has many creative levels and steers the player in the right direction. Only a couple of times i got to a situation where i couldn't see ahead and it negatively impacted me but luckily it brings you back quick to try again. The game is also very visually pleasing with multiple idle animations and many others. It feels very realized. The ending was amazing and touching.

Now for the parts where it could improve: Like others say it is to unforgiving with not letting you readjust mid-air which causes frustration and needing to redo things multiple times like at a level in the 5th feet under section where you had a moving elevator to make you redo a cycle. There are certain points that ramp up in difficulty in a weird way because you need one of these precise jumps.

Overall cool mechanics and solid game with beautiful art and lengthy gameplay. Would buy if it released as a full fletched game

Down, Down, Down by Gilokko 2021-04-29T15:53:23Z

Fun change up of little sections and it all fits very well, the high pitched song got a bit annoying and some sprites went through each other a bit. Nice overall though

Deep Dive Drive 2000 by Dane Tesla 2021-05-01T08:20:45Z

Beautiful game although slightly confusing. It is visually soooo pleasing with changing backgrounds constantly. In my first run I didn't understand how the words with colours work as it wasn't explained in the tutorial but later picked up on it. From there it was smooth sailing.

Some suggestion would be to have a difficulty curve with at first less words and more time to enter. Also a score based on the time played would be nice.

(Also big oof for dad)

If it ever gets worked further on I'd like to see where it would go. Also cool that the whole mixtape is included!

Mad on a motobike by Sigo 2021-04-28T18:10:39Z

The difficulty curve could be a bit better and it would be nice that at some point there are going to be different kind of things on the road to avoid or collect. Maybe something to shoo the spooky creatures away? Flash grenades or so. Overall pretty solid still and a good mood!

Vox Machina by MikeW 2021-04-28T18:30:36Z

Such a vibe! It's like being back in the era of 2000's with creepy pasta's. I'm not sure if I got stuck or if it ended at the weird altar with flashing colours but that's fine. What I also would suggest is some clear feedback for everything if you use the machine on them. Good job to put this together!

Sleep Deeper by nekowei 2021-04-29T15:16:11Z

Very unique concept and a nice take on the theme! It was light hearted and cool mechanics with the pillow and teddy bear blocking the need for other things. I do feel like it's not too scalable as once you have everything you have little problems with anything, but i can't tell for sure. Great job!

Greedy Miner by Wallkysek 2021-04-28T19:50:03Z

Fun game! The fact that the cart runs on a seemingly random generated track keeps it interesting! Enemy variety is fun, the cart with the turret too! If you ever make this a full game it would be nice to add more carts at some point as an upgrade. Also like others say the trader appearing was a bit unclear. A little bug I found was that when I mined gold and try to mine one right next to it it wouldn't let me, I needed to get out of the hitbox first. Awesome game you guys!

Junk.E by kev_The_GameDev 2021-04-29T15:43:45Z

Great game! It had weird mechanics to move around but not frustrating. It was fun to manage properly and I loved the risk / reward of taking to much stuff with you.

What I would like to see is to make it easier to pick up small objects stuck on coral reefs as i had to precisely manage to not get hit and the hitbox from the coral was sometimes still above those objects. Also rotating around with a big object like the tv makes the character slightly uncontrollable as bumping against any wall meant you would be pushed completely the other direction and the rotating happens quite fast as it is controlled (in my case) by a mouse. Maybe lerping to the angle helps a bit with this?

Anyway amazing graphics and getting to darker parts was also fun although I never got quite far enough to rely heavily on the light. Good job!
