Nice digging mechanics, good job

batthecat 2025-04-08 02:51

pretty nice digging, well done

gold-daniel 2025-04-08 02:59

Love the intro animation, hitting the buttons to select on the main menu took me a second to get but got a chuckle. But once I hit the play button nothing would happen, an area around my feet was revealed, I walked from one side to the other and it showed me where digging would occur but the game would not start and I could not continue

noodlehoof 2025-04-08 03:11

not sure how to reply to comments on here, if it's even possible, but if anyone has a similar issue to gold-daniel, you have to click the blocks you want to mine with your cursor! :)

siilicac 2025-04-08 03:12

honestly got kinda mesmerized by whole thing love the sounds and the lava making it fun but not too hard 10/10 goblin man shop with all of them in the background was fave floor lmao (the lava got me)

xlu 2025-04-08 19:09

Really loved the art in the game, it has cool retro vibe.

rucksack 2025-04-08 19:18

I'm impressed by the details for all the different shopkeepers.

noodlehoof 2025-04-08 22:42

just figured out how to reply so i'll get everybody in one comment lol

@onngd @batthecat tysm!

@gold-daniel sorry if it wasn't made clear, but you have to use the cursor to actually click the blocks. hope that helps!

@siilicac thank you so much! our sound designer did a killer job and i'm glad you appreciated it!

@xlu tysm! we were definitely going for an old school retro feel.

@rucksack thank you! i did the character design and animation on all but gizmo the kitty and the goblin, and each member of our team recorded VO for the character voices, so it's great to hear you enjoyed them!

2025-04-08 23:46

I LOVE DOUG!

teist 2025-04-09 09:22

Impressed by the art quality of the game!

flinge 2025-04-09 12:45

Cool game and concept overall! I really loved the idea of all the shopkeepers being different and super caricatured — that added a lot of charm. Wanna go deeper to see who is next.

The only thing: at the very beginning, it’s not immediately clear that you’re supposed to move downward. It does make sense later, once the lava starts pouring from above, but I think the game should hint at that direction right from the first screen.

noodlehoof 2025-04-09 16:29

@lambolarry thank you!!! doug loves you too

@teist thank you so much!!!

@flinge thank you!!! we’re going to start working on polishing and adding more once we’ve taken a little break, so keep an eye out! and thanks for the feedback! that seems to be an issue i’ve seen a few people have, so that’s high on our list of things to fix.

kamile-v 2025-04-09 19:45

cool!

sevadusk 2025-04-09 21:13

The ui elements, sfx, and overall charm are really top tier. I love the atmosphere you guys set here, and the only thing this game needs would be more polish.

p-r 2025-04-09 21:29

I wasn't a big fan of the controls, took me a while to master, but it looks great, I like the title, the details, the 2D/3D effects

p1x3lc0w 2025-04-09 21:48

Really like the way the game looks! being able to hold the mouse down to dig also made the digging feel very smooth. The unique shops are also a nice touch. One thing i would change is the jump upgrade; perhaps because jump is upgradable the initial jump feels way too weak and makes the movement feel a lot more awkward than it actually is. Removing a jump as an upgrade or just making the initial jump stronger would improve this i feel. Very fun game overall, great work and thanks for the game!

mtnbonez 2025-04-09 22:16

@kamile-v thank you for checking it out!

@sevadusk appreciate it! We're thinking about doing a bare minimum polish pass after the jam rating is done to fix up movement/collision, balance the gameplay, and add more maps/shops so we can finish the vision of the game.

@p-r thanks for the feedback! Appreciate you taking the time to give it a go.

@p1x3lc0w appreciate the detailed feedback! Totally agree, we ran out of time to implement the abilities we originally had planned (one was even being able to place a ladder to reach higher spaces) & just hooked up what variables we had available right in the engine haha. We'll take this suggestion with us towards a 1.0 release!

talif-moor 2025-04-09 22:58

I like the game, trying to maze your way around to the next zone is a lot of fun. I do feel like there's a little bit of wonkiness with the digging, but especially the movement, I kept getting stuck on walls when trying to move down, or jumping higher than I should because I was standing close to walls. I feel like there's quite a bit of potential here.

paulhocker 2025-04-10 02:31

i have to admit that i was not expecting this game to be so good. i really like the 3d effect as well -- nice job

kveg 2025-04-10 03:52

Hey man big shout out to Buff Michael thats the guy right there. Way fun. The lava adds a real sense of urgency and made finding a big stack of gold that I could mine exciting. Great job.

jim-jagers 2025-04-10 08:28

A tier game for the name alone but it became S tier when i encountered Gizmo the shopkeep

madelinef 2025-04-10 08:45

I enjoyed your game ! I like the graphics and the stones that appear when you dig, the urgency with the lava is also really cool. The atmosphere is nice and I liked the shop keepers. The transitions (start screen, and the lava pouring down) were a good surprise for me, as I didn't see a lot in other LD entries :) good job !

I might mention that I didn't know what to do at first, the PLAY / QUIT really looking like buttons. I also had the same problem as gold.daniel (your second comment), then I read the comments to find how to dig. I also struggled a bit with the jump to go diagonally up, as I needed to jump without pressing the side, and then move laterally. It was unfamiliar for me.

floppynub 2025-04-11 00:53

Awesome game, has a cat so that's an instant win. Really neat characters, and a super solid gameplay loop! I could see this game really blossoming with continued work and expansion. Great work, especially seeing that this is the first jam for some of you! Congrats, I'm excited to see what you make next :D

noodlehoof 2025-04-11 02:54

@talif-moor thanks for checking us out! there's definitely some wonkiness, but hopefully we can iron out those kinks soon!

@paulhocker thanks so much for playing!

@kveg thank you so much kveg! buff michael is truly a force to be reckoned with. appreciate you checking us out! i loved seeing your game in the VDG stream

@jim-jagers gizmo was our ace in the hole for sure lmao. thanks for playing!

@madelinef thanks so much for checking us out! we've definitely seen the confusion in the main menu area come up a lot, so we're working on some changes to help relay that information a little better. hopefully that'll make for an easier playthrough.

@floppynub thanks so much for playing! we'll be patching and reworking some things in the future, so keep an eye out! :)

neowhoru 2025-04-11 07:39

nice digging game and nice stuff with interacting with start and quit button. But the controls are very complicated to use as you need to target very near to the player.

I would try to just use the direction of the mouse as the dig direction instead of that you need be near. Besides that it is a fun game.

jtap 2025-04-12 01:31

Very funny and cute game. I liked the idea with different unusual merchants, it's great that the first level allows you to master the mechanics of the game. I had trouble with the controls, I can't explain but there are often blockages in movement. I lost when I found myself in a pocket from which I could not get out and lava overtook me. The buttons have already been written above. I would like to play a more refined version of this game. Thanks for this experience.

adam-gallina 2025-04-12 02:27

Really fun game, the mining felt really good and it was fun to explore and find all the merchants! I would have liked some kind of reticle/indicator for where you would mine next, it took a few seconds at the beginning to figure out how to play, but after that point it was pretty easy to learn the controls. Would love to play a future version of the game if you guys end up working on it more!

2025-04-12 06:34

I’m naming my first born Doug after this game. 10/10 would recommend.

athospap 2025-04-12 12:15

Really nice entry! I would like some music and somewhere to show how much gold I have (unless there is and i'm blind). Great job

johneyd 2025-04-12 16:09

Need more gold! A fun game in which you need to dig and mine gold and then sell it and buy various reinforcements. However, after the appearance of lava the game becomes very complicated. As for me, the lava is coming too fast and I don't have time to mine anything. But the game itself is very funny. By the way, I would advise the developer to create a slippery material and put it on the character so that he can slide along the walls.

braktheman 2025-04-12 20:14

Really liked the parallax backgrounds and the 3d on the blocks - especially when falling from a shop to the next session.

I got pummeled fairly quickly by the lava - somewhere around the 3rd wave, but the game itself is an interesting concept of mining fast. Builds good tension! I like that the first round doesn't have anything chasing you to teach you how to play before it starts coming for you.

Nice job, team!

noodlehoof 2025-04-12 23:46

@neowhoru thanks for checking us out! we'll take that into consideration! glad you enjoyed the game

@jtap thanks for playing! yeah there is a little wonkiness with the movement that we're working on, and hopefully will be able to resolve with our first patch. in regards to the pocket, we had one or two areas that were intentional traps, so you may have fallen into one of those lol. definitely keep an eye out for our more polished versions!

@adam-gallina thank you so much for playing! we'll definitely take a reticle of some sort into consideration going forward. i'm glad you enjoyed it!

@carriedawg this is a great honor. may your doug be happy, healthy, and yearn for the mines.

@athospap thanks for playing! we definitely want to add some music elements in the future, so thanks for the suggestion! and there is a gold indicator on the upper right of the screen, but we could definitely make it a little bigger lol.

@johneyd i think part of the fun of D.U.G. is that you have to plan out your route as the lava comes so you can maximize how much gold you get while avoiding death, but i definitely understand where you're coming from. and that's a great idea in regards to the walls! that's something we'll definitely consider. thank you for playing!

@braktheman thank you brak! yeah having that first level to get a feel for it with no pressure was crucial, especially since some of the controls can be harder to get the hang of. we appreciate you checking us out!

bongard22 2025-04-13 21:15

Had a great time playing this on stream at: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2429489125?t=0h31m54s

noodlehoof 2025-04-14 04:17

@bongard22 thanks again for playing us on your stream! i had an awesome time chilling with you guys.

heviosso 2025-04-14 14:09

Nice digging game with a chance of drowning in lava! Not too demanding (which I like). The shopkeepers are the best. I haven't figured out if there's any incentive to buy anything, though.

marcari 2025-04-25 20:21

Nice digging mechanic, the lava adds the necessary pressure to the player to hurry up. I also like the art style and the mixture of 3D and 2D to achieve the parallax effect. It is good that you added the shops between the different levels, which allows the player to get some rest.
