Love the take on the theme and the music and art are great! Gameplay is quite fun and I love the whole vibe of rodent life. Movement could be a bit snappier though, but that's probably me just being nick-picky. Very fun!

matt-fabius 2024-04-16 04:37

I love the artwork! The summoning took me a little while to figure out but once I did it was pretty cool. If you wanted to flesh this out a little more, I'd recommend updating the UX or tutorializing it so it's clearer that you're entering a combination. Being able to move while attacking or a dodge mechanic may make the combat feel a little smoother. Right now it feels a little slow, but what you have is really impressive for a game jam. Good work!

Raising the Bread is not just a game; it's an experience. From the moment you step into the charming world of Rakodi the raccoon, you'll be whisked away on a delectable journey of culinary magic and delightful whimsy. It stands out from the crowd with its unique premise, lovable characters, and engaging gameplay!

rawb 2024-04-19 00:30

This is such a fun idea, I love the summons. The art is also amazing, there is no much character in all of the sprites and the backgrounds are beautiful

ryan-lockhart 2024-04-19 00:32

The gameplay was a bit stiff. I thought your twist on the theme was quite novel. I'm pressed with the art style, it is certainly more than I managed.

bochinator 2024-04-19 00:38

Fun little game! My main complain would be that there's not much for the player to do combat-wise. Some combat interactions would go a long way.

mistiemaedae 2024-04-19 00:42

The art was to die for. I loved my little raccoon and all of their pastry monsters! The music was jazzy as hell and made the whole thing a great time. This was really creative for a beat'em'up! I haven't played many based around the things that you summon besides special attacks, and figuring out which one to do at the right moment with what you had really took some thinking. My only struggle with it is that I felt left a bit high and dry sometimes, completely helpless to the enemies because they took out my creatures way faster than I could take them out. It felt like the egg thrower enemies could one shot AOE a bunch of my critters at once, leaving me all alone with my really weak spoon. I did beat it though! Summoning a ton of the tanks really does wonders once you don't have to deal with egg throwers. This was very well done and I had a lot of fun!

vivid-hallucination 2024-04-19 00:44

Beautiful illustrative style. I was nearly taken out by the two mice in a trenchcoat, steam rolled the bougie budgie, then got murdered by crime weasels.

🖤

aivaxela 2024-04-19 00:55

Awesome game and and gameplay felt very fluent. I basically got away with using the pancake ice cream monster thing only :)

maxgun 2024-04-19 16:05

Congrats on your entry, I liked playing it! The characters are fun, and the visuals work well with the vibe of your game. Thank you for the experience ^^

zomk 2024-04-20 09:29

Jooo that was epic! Amazing art, sound, setting. Very nice. I would like to say that the close combat felt a bit frustrating to me, as there was no visible way to dodge incoming attacks, so I had to just tank it or only summon ranged units. But in general a very cool game, had so much fun that I played till the end ^^

brainles-etertainment 2024-04-20 10:25

Overall, game is cool. Summoning rules a bit unclear. And controls to slow for my taste.

cheesepencil 2024-04-21 05:00

I couldn't get past Pigeon-Karen but the whole thing is beautiful and amazing. Epic jam game with LOTS of polish.

kitira 2024-04-21 05:15

Really nice graphic style and a funny idea to interpret the theme! I think the controls could use a little more tweaking and a dodge or a knockback of enemies after hitting them could be nice. But still, a really nice take on the theme! Very fun! :)

erivas-soulares 2024-04-21 05:25

Very nice game!

I would suggest to refine a bit some fundamentals from a beat'n'up base. I Didn't feel so much of a difference in "Z" variation (Coming closer or further from the camera) in terms of evasive. Also, I Didn't feel some "Projection" for your attacks.

Still, summon bread minions is fun, and the art is cute. You parallax-zooming-intro is superb

tetracold 2024-04-21 05:27

The artstyle here is amazing and full of charm! I really like the character designs and especially the painterly backgrounds, they look very nice!! it's all very cute and cozy, congrats to the artist who worked on this, it turned out really good!

The music is very nice too, very jazzy and I like that each track gets faster in tempo to match the difficulty of the levels.

I like how the theme is implemented here, using combos to summon the creatures is pretty neat, tho it would have helped a lot of the player had a wider moveset, maybe more attacks and some type of roll, plus it is not very clear if you can doge enemy attacks, I have tried but I have been unable to, the enemies seem to have pretty big range. At some point my strategy just became spawning in long range creatures. With some polish and more summons this could be a great game

really good entry, good job!

also I saw the post about ratings. Leaving comments with feedback on other games helps a lot especially if the creators heart them, also hearting messages received on your own game and engaging with them by replaying too, hope it helps!

martonel 2024-04-21 05:49

I like this cartoon artstyle, really good job!

denismarasan 2024-04-21 06:00

Narrative, art, sounds and music are awesome! The fighting part isn't that good, but the game definitely stands out! Great job!

mrgaberson 2024-04-21 07:29

Man, the art for this one is amazing! love the idea of summoning allies in a beat em up and this one's short and sweet!

kaesterin 2024-04-21 08:21

Very, very nice art style, the raccoons are just adorable. Also liked the music, the atmosphere of the game and the unusual approach to you summons. A bit complicated battle system for me, but I still had a lot of fun with the game. Great job!

konbuscus 2024-04-21 08:39

Music is nice ! Art is super neat !

fabula-rasa 2024-04-21 08:57

Very nice music and graphics. They go well together and create a perfect atmosphere. The summons' designs are very creative, and there is some nice worldbuilding.

What I would like to see is more visual/sfx feedback, especially when you're taking damage and when your summons die. Some visible flashing on damage would already go a long way - at the moment, you can easily miss the fact that you're dying  Also, there seems to be only one proper way to start - summon a Cookie Monster. If you choose to summon Dough-Dough instead, it will die before you can get any loot, and you won't be able to summon anything else. You will be stuck.

Overall, it's a really cool entry and more challenging than it seems at first glance (which is a good thing). I died the first time around

aviv-levy 2024-04-21 11:06

I think it's a good concept and the art is lovely, but the combat, movement and summoning felt slow, and I found myself getting a bit bored at first waiting for enemies to spawn. Also, there was some lack of feedback for getting hit, etc. I think this is easily remediable by amping up the action, adding more feedback and making the game a bit faster. Maybe have more playable area and allow the player to progress faster, too!

In other words, more action please!! 😀

Other than that, people should start finishing their sandwiches and chocolate bars! What a waste lol :)

okk 2024-04-21 12:16

Love your art style. Didn't manage to pass the evil racoon. It's a bit too hard, because there is no way to get resources, except for killing enemies. But overall liked this game.

breakfastgun 2024-04-21 20:32

I love the art style and the music was great. The 'hit' sounded very satisfying. I wish the game was a little more forgiving allowing me to dodge enemy attacks.

linky439 2024-04-21 21:41

Wow, what a stylish game! I really enjoyed the fun little story and the summoning idea, and it is coupled with fantastic grawings and very nice audio as well (I love the little "woosh" the spoon does when you're repeatedly hitting enemies)

Overall I felt like the Dough-dough was way less useful than the other twos, so I stopped making them spawn unless I ran out of chocolate. Couldn't reach the end as the third boss took me down with their goons, but I had a really nice and fun time playing. I'd say the controls of the main character are a bit slowish, but otherwise it is really good. Congrats!

zuhairghias 2024-04-22 01:15

Big thanks to everyone for playing. The feedback has been overwhelming

As for the player movement and attacks, we really wanted to push the player to rely more on their summons, and so this may have been by design. We still probably could have polished it a little more. Apologies if the player movement and attacks feel lackluster.

@linky439 Yea, Dough-doughs are kind of weak. I also tend to use the other summons more. Thanks for the feedback.@

@breakfastgun There isn't actually anyway to dodge other than to run before getting attacked. Thanks for the suggestion.

@okk Sorry about that. I did realize that the player is kinda dead in the water once summons run out.

@aviv-levy Yup, I wish we had more time to add more action and polish. P.S. we are strong advocates of recycling.

@fabula-rasa My go to is also the cookie monster. We currently have the player flash red and make a 'racoon-sound' when taking damage, but there is definitely room for more feedback.

@konbuscus Glad you liked it!

@kaesterin Hopefully unusual in a good way XD. Sorry it felt complicated. We didn't get time to add a tutorial or simpler recipes.

@mrgaberson Thanks for playing! 😊

@denismarasan I agree that the combat system is pretty barebones. Thanks for the feedback.

@martonel Thanks! :heart:

@tetracold Appreciate all the feedback. Unfortunately we weren't able to add a dodging mechanic. And yes, I agree. Getting honest feedback on a game feels great, and that is something I try to reciprocate. Thanks!

@erivas-soulares I definitely lack experience in this style of games. We primarily kept the z-axis to spread things out a little. I still have a lot to learn for 2d games.

@kitira Yesss, I had thought about adding knockback but that thought got lost somewhere between all the other features and bug fixes. Thanks for pointing out.

@cheesepencil Sorry to hear that. Wish we had more time to balance. Hope you'll try again. I did fix a couple bugs that might make the game 'fairer'.

@brainles-etertainment Thanks for the feedback. I agree that a tutorial would go a long way.

@zomk Thanks for playing till the end. It really means a lot.

@maxgun Thank YOU for playing 😁

@aivaxela Your Apple Gobblers must have been stronger than mine because I did not get far with that strategy XD

@vivid-hallucination You comment made my day 😊

@mistiemaedae You aren't alone in feeling like the game gets impossible as soon as your summons all die. This was somewhat intentional, but we may have gotten carried away 😅

@bochinator Agreed. Would be nice to add more depth to the currently very bare-bones combat system. Thanks for the feedback.

@ryan-lockhart Glad you like our take on the theme. Took us a while to agree on one 😅

@rawb Thanks for playing and leaving such a heartwarming comment. Means a lot

@matt-fabius We were so focused on the theme and the summons in particular that we kind-of overlooked character movement. Thanks for pointing that out!

@vantalogic You are not being nitpicky. You are being constructive, and I appreciate that. Thanks for playing the game 😁

jeremy-ryan 2024-04-23 00:23

Had a lot of fun with this one! I absolutely love the premise, character designs, and jazz soundtrack. My best strategy seemed to be getting a critical mass of cookie monsters which would kill just about any other enemy on sight (and a few gobblers to tank damage if needed).

As others have said, a little bit more "oomph" to the combat system could have gone a long way toward making it more satisfying. Maybe some particles/screenshake on hitting an enemy, or a brief animation for spawning in a minion, etc. Of course there's not much time in a game jam and you added an impressive amount of content as-is.

I drew a doodle of Rakodi:
