@uni-isnor yes, the games itch page is still under construction. Needed a bit of a break from the screen. It’ll be up soon!
Wanna play! D:
@uni-isnor @2thegamechanger - the game is now up on the itch page. I'm still working on the page's look though.
the art is amazing, great job, felt like a full release or like a solid demo.
I really wanted to make it to the snakes :/ Those falling-edge-spike-pit-precision-jumps at the beginning are very hard. I was too bad to do it consistently. Man the rock golems were super scary, when they came down they made me jump in my seat! I stopped fighting them but i didn't have enough health left to just run. The art is amazing and i really like the vibe! The graphics remind me of real of the mad god but more polished i really enjoy your color palette and your level design reminds me of the old prince of persia, i had a lot of fun exploring. Good job and well done!
it's an unusual feeling when you need to move to the left in a platform game, I like it :D beautiful art, very cool!
@2thegamechanger yes, the spike pits are pretty tricky, I kept dying to them while testing. There is a way to avoid them all together, but it takes a bit longer.
@hangovergames yes, it feels strange and backwards. I think that’s why I chose it.
Cool! I'm glad that I stuck around to find the snake boss :D The part with the ladders and the spikes below was pretty difficult I think. But not too difficult.
The music was pretty good for the menu screen, but somehow I think the gameplay itself deserved something more upbeat. Maybe even diffrent versions for the outside world, the cassle and the depths (and maybe even in the boss area)
I love you made the thumbnail something resembling a game cardridge. That is very clever. I'm not a fan of acctually installing LD games to be honest. I would prefer a portable version. I the LD page you talk about a HTML version, but I could not find that ^^"
The outside area could have used some secret area above the treetops I think :D
I wonder what the story behind this game is, why is this character going to the depths to fight a giant snake?
- Edit: I found the HTML version. Its on the LD page itself, I'm still not used to that haha - Edit 2: It seems that ratings are still disabled. I'll come back to rate :-)
@wouter52 thanks for the feedback! You’re right, I definitely should have put a secret area above the trees. I’ll probably do that in the updated version, along with some more music. The ladder and spike area is pretty tricky.. but there is a way to bypass it completely.
Hmm. Perhaps the html version isn’t working.. I can try to host it somewhere else maybe?
As for the backstory, there’s not much that has been fleshed out fully. The character is based on a character that my friend played in a D&D game years ago.
tiny game.png The game is teeny tiny for me here on ludum. Send me a comment when you fix the itch.io page, then i'll try it out there!
Very nice cover image and title screen! I'm using a laptop so needing to use mouse keys to attack was a bit awkward but I did make it to the snake boss until I gave up on trying to play despite the for me awkward controls.
@unentokku thank you! And dang, I never even thought of laptop play.. >.< I’ll have to make secondary button controls in the next release. Thanks for playing!
Something I noticed that affected my enjoyment of the game a bit was that my mouse didn't lock to the monitor it was playing on, so as my hand naturally drifted around, if I ever accidentally clicked on my second monitor, the game would minimize, but continue running, and I had to scramble to get back into the game. This happened while I was being attacked by rock monsters in the boss dungeon, and it was a bit frustrating. Definitely not a huge huge issue, but something to be aware of.
Otherwise, very fun!
@viktorthegreat Thanks for the feedback! Yes, this also causes issues with laptops. In the future I’ll map things to the keyboard rather than the mouse.
Really great art. I would definitely recommend uploading a web version to itch.io as well if you have the game on itch since the game appears to render super small when played in the embedded Ludum Dare browser play.
The Art, animation, music, has this fantastic retro vibe. Even the attack sounds and animation are consistent with the mood.
Wow great vibes from the art, music, style and gameplay. I must say its an interesting choice to use mouse in the controls as opposed to all buttons though
Aw this game is fire. You really hit every note. Play for about 15 mins. Kept getting killed by the golems. Serious Dark Souls energy here. 54mbs and buttery smooth. You're a master of the craft :)
The game looks awesome! Feels like a game I would play at the local arcade! Good job!
This is so fleshed out! Tons of mechanics, big levels, good job! I didn't read the controls before playing and found the sign icons very unintuitive. I actually thought that the first prompt was trying to tell me to interact first to actually read the sign. I also thought the signs switch sprites a little too quickly. I was having trouble parsing what the images actually were. But that's just nit-picking, awesome job!
Really good stuff! Super filled with content and lots to explore and discover! Seriously nice polish in this game!
@lovewerk Thank you! I actually feel the same way about the signs/speech bubbles. They were sort of a last minute addition and definitely needed a bit more work
@deppong Thanks for playing and thanks for the feedback!
"I didn't understand how to control the character's movement, so he stayed on the starting platform the whole time.
Should I go up from a place that looks like a ladder? But pressing the W key doesn't do anything.
@fiora-the-purple were you playing in the html version? Or the downloaded version? It’s possible a mouse click may have taken you out of the game window?
@greynovembergames the downloaded version. I can't use WASD to move in the game. I only dash with the mouse.
I like the art style and background theme a lot. One gripe I have is that the player and enemies move a bit fast but that's no biggie.
@fiora-the-purple hmm that is strange. Not sure why that would happen. I’ll have to do some digging. Was it the zip version or install version?
@greynovembergames the zip version.I don't know what happened. I hope it's not serious. Thanks for helping!
@fiora-the-purple thank you for trying it!
The world is really detailed, and the art looks nice too. But some things make it frustrating to play, like the camera showing very little space ahead of you, no enemy knockback, and the very fast jump/fall speed (especially when you can't grab a ledge while falling next to it). Took me some time to realize I have double-jump.
After many and many attempts, leviathan is down. Here are some opinions The good: - Everything about graphics, wow, impressive. I don't think I could have even if I was solely for graphics. - Sound - Ambient
The not so good: - 60+% of the screen shows were you come from, instead of where you go to. - normal slash hits very little, so you need to spam it. But you can't keep distance with it if you spam, so it is useless in the last zone - I love jump down attacks, yet, I couldn't get any use of the one in game. There is always a ceiling, so there is very few ways to gain the height to make it useful. - Normal slash in the air makes the jump down attack, which gets me killed every time I want to damage someone after a jump... Final boss is not reachable without jumping.
I really don't want this comment to sound negative, because it really isn't. Having so much way paved, I feel like a few minor changes would make it absolutely unique.
A platform game with well-made pixel art graphics. The spiked forces are really a headache, I had some fun but I couldn't stay until I found the boss. The spaces are tight but I believe that it is still not the best way to use the theme because even so there is a large enough space to see and the huge stage did not give me a feeling of cramping. But when it comes to Geni, it's a great entry, very well crafted.
Game was really cool and liked the art style. The limited space theme was explored through tough jump quests and small resolution. Though I found those aspects annoying for gameplay, I respect that it's playing to the theme!
I really wish there were checkpoints in the game.. I personally detest running back to the same spot over and over again like Elden Ring hahahaha. That's just personal preference though!
Background audio didn't loop seamlessly which tends to be a no go. Would've liked the sound design to be leveled down a bit too, to balance with the background music better.
The little pop ups and art style was so cute! It was a really efficient and effective way of communicating controls to the player. The game is challenging and engaging so well done!!
@sleepyufo Thanks for playing and the great feedback! I agree, ideally I would make the levels less tight, but that was the easiest way to implement the theme. It would be cool to be able to use all those moves with space to maneuver.
Really nice little game, i like the aesthetics a lot I feel that the theme mostly applied to the height of the corridors and not the length, so some felt pretty long just to find an enemy
After having beaten the game, here are some thoughts Good: Graphics The boss at the end is fun There are plenty of useful movement options that are fun to play with Difficult, but in a fun way (other than the spike section)
Less good: The spike section has a severe over reliance on instant kills to provide its challenge. This combined with the very fast fall speed and lack of checkpoints makes it an absolute headache to get through. This also seems to be the area with most side paths, but I didn't feel any sort of want to explore them because if I died I would just be sent back to the start and all that time would have been wasted. It's not too bad once you know the route, but being sent back to the start for making a single mistake does make that a bit of chore.
Overall, I quite enjoyed it. The section with the golems is a good primer for the boss and the boss itself is an enjoyable fight. good game!
Cool game had a lot of fun exploring. Love the artwork and style and your music/sound design great too.
Nice graphics and responsive controls. A little bit of coyote time on jumps would have been appreciated because they are super easy to miss-time. The music suits the vibe of the game and a space-restricted platformer is an interesting concept.
Good job!
Very solid entry overall, feels polished and the graphics look great. Most of my issues are with minor things, such as the camera (should show "more" in the current direction) and it feels somewhat punishing with the traps.
The art is amazing and the mood is perfect, it really made me want to beat the game. Unfortunately it's very hard in an unfair way, especially since there's no gamepad controls and the game doesn't have any checkpoints. I arrived to the snake boss twice but he beat me in just a few seconds, and I didn't want to continue.
I think you could have improved the game way much by not putting death traps everywhere (or by making them more obvious by zomming out for instance), adding potions in every dead end and having a boss that is less agressive.
Apart from that it's really good and I can't believe you made it in just 2 days! Excellent job.
I agree with what others have mentioned about difficulty and feeling unfair without checkpoints. The effort to walk back to a boss even with shortcuts was enough that I gave up before I really wanted to. I did love the visuals, but a minor annoyance I had is in the first area the background bushes appear to be the same color and design as foreground foliage with collision, so my first couple of times through I was a little confused about what I could and could not walk through. Still, very impressive work for two days and a pretty solid game.
Lovely graphics and mood! Very impressive quality for 2 days, well done!
awesome game.. great graphics.. nice music and atmosphere
too bad there are no check points... I died too far for my taste and I didn't feel like playing it from the beginning
good work
