Hey, your games looks great and I look forward to play it, but I think that "files" command broke and does not list any files

totteriludum 2021-10-04 23:37

@bjakubowski Thank you for reporting! It seems to be a minor bug and we are getting a patch ready right now! EDIT: It's fixed! :)

totteriludum 2021-10-04 23:42

@bjakubowski The bug is fixed, although note that the system is free from files at the beginning of the game!

kbf123 2021-10-05 03:02

I got stuck and 17 people died.

Cool game though.

moonlher 2021-10-05 04:45

I love it

westmave 2021-10-05 12:43

17 casualties. What an amazing game for a 3 day Jam. I really liked. The console just felt real. The visuals and sound were onpoint. The minigame for bruteforce was fitting. Overall great job. I liked that you could even get your latest commands by using up/down, just like in CMD. One very small critique: I would have liked, if the player could navigate the command by using left/right. Well done!

darthboseiju 2021-10-05 13:00

My favourite game of the jam so far. I absolutely binned it at the end - chose the wrong person! Got some names muddled up. On the plus side, easy to retry.

Great audio, great tone. I liked the hacking minigame, and the loop was great. Time passing strongly reminded me of the Return of the Obra Dinn. Great work. My (absolute TINIEST) of niggles was that there was a tiny jump when the background audio looped.

Great work, should be very happy. I got stuck into the reading and apparently my temp had hit 99. V good.

totteriludum 2021-10-05 13:10

@kbf123 @moonlher @westmave @darthboseiju Thank you for the feedback! It means a lot to hear your thoughts on our game! :D

totteriludum 2021-10-05 13:38

@westmave Thank you! I agree that left/right navigation would be a useful feature to have, and we will consider adding it if we decide to release a post-jam version. Thanks for playing!

totteriludum 2021-10-05 13:41

@darthboseiju Thanks! Cutting it close is what BRUTEFORCE is all about! :)

We will take a look at the audio, if we release a post-jam version. Not sure if new audio is allowed after the submission period is over :/

darthboseiju 2021-10-05 14:05

@totteriludum That's fair. And it is genuinely a verry very small thing - I wouldn't worry about it!

tetrapteryx 2021-10-05 15:29

I was really blown away by the attention to detail in this game. The aesthetic seems simple, but the fonts, colors, textures, are all spot on. Being able to press up to access the teminal history was a nice touch. When I read in the description that it could take an hour to finish, I figured I'd just try it out for a bit, but I actually ended up really engrossed in solving the mystery!

marrs 2021-10-05 15:44

I'm enjoying this game. Takes me back to the old days of text adventures. Thanks for sharing!

kichiguy 2021-10-05 15:51

This is a very cool game! I absolutely love the concept and am a huge sucker for terminal-based puzzles, so you really got me. Really well executed.

totteriludum 2021-10-05 16:03

@tetrapteryx @marrs @kichiguy Thank you all for your response and for playing! I'm very happy to hear that you enjoyed our game! :)

javicoder 2021-10-05 16:32

this game is awesome. i think tt is not easy to make a game like that with hacker / terminal style, and also without being boring. It gives the clues correctly and in a clever way. I really liked it, it would be great if you could extend it in a commercial version with more cases.

gorypixels 2021-10-05 17:54

Loved the Untold Stories vibe here! (Funny enough, that game started as a jam entry for an older Ludum Dare :) )

parttimeindie 2021-10-05 17:57

I am sorry I did not rate the game, I do not really like this type of games (just my personal thing) and I have the feeling if I rate it I would do your game injustice.

r3l0ad1 2021-10-05 18:10

Wow, this is my favourite game of the jam. I love the console that you have setup, it looks amazing and feels so realistic. I love investigation type stuff like this and the fact that the player had total control over the console feels so cool. I got jumpscared when i was noting down details about the people and the computer overheated lmao. The SFX of the game like the hum and the terminal beeps completely contribute to the mood and tense vibe. overall amazing game. I look forward to see what you guys create next

totteriludum 2021-10-05 18:30

@javicoder @gorypixels @r3l0ad1 Thank you all for playing our game and giving us feedback! It means a lot! :D

totteriludum 2021-10-05 18:33

@parttimeindie No problems! Not every game is for everyone! :)

petteri 2021-10-05 22:50

I noticed this game yesterday but did not have time to play back then. I had been browsing in a private tab and forgot about the name of the game, but the concept was interesting enough that I took the time to look for this game until I found it again.

I got Uplink vibes from this, very nice! I enjoyed the writing and all the small details. The difficulty was tough and I did not succeed on first time - got jumpscared twice and ended up having to make a wrong guess due to being about to run out of time. After that I managed to get the right suspect by using information from the previous attempt, although my reasoning was quite flimsy.

My reasoning about the suspect, ROT13 encoded to avoid spoiling others: Fretrl jnf "ryvzvangrq" ol Gvtrejbys82/Naqerl, fb nffhzrq qrnq. Ynan naq Fretrl whfg qvq abg nccrne yvxr gurl jbhyq unir n zbgvingvba gb pbzzvg na npg bs greebevfz onfrq ba gurve sevraqfcyhfarg cbfgvatf, qrfcvgr Angnyvn ohlvat synzznoyr yvdhvqf. Fb gung bayl yrnirf Fgrxri jub unq svanapvny vffhrf naq gurersber pbhyq unir orra qrfcrengr rabhtu gb cresbez na npg bs greebevfz sbe zbarl.

This did not seem like a very solid reasoning to me, so I would be interested to know if I missed some important clue which would have allowed me to come too a more solid conclusion.

Awesome game! Really like the terminal aesthetics. The story was really cool, even if I lost  . Just one thing : It would be great to be able to move the cursor with the arrow keys and also maintain backspace to delete characters.

chainsawmcd 2021-10-06 19:25

This is so cool. Very immersive. You really feel like you're hacking into all these servers, piecing together the story from the characters' records. The overheat/restart mechanic and the ticking clock are great touches as well. Kudos!

ekilibr 2021-10-06 20:16

5 stars to the mood. As it's been said you're really soon hooked into it. This is really smart and well executed. Couldn't finish in time but I'll definitely come back to it later on. Well done and thanks for the fun! :)

timo-strating 2021-10-06 20:37

I'm a linux user so I got what i had to do fast but the bruteforce command was really strange and I did not get it to work. After trying "oke" I got one character correct I think. But nice game. great entry

timo-strating 2021-10-06 20:40

P.S. It would be nice if you could add some additional explanation on how you made the game.

crazyrems 2021-10-06 21:09

Hard to follow if you don’t have pen & paper! I’m glad you warned at the beginning.

I liked the mechanic of exploring remote systems to get information. I previously attempted that on another jam but you managed to put a lot of data to check, that makes all the difference.

Some minor SPOILERS ahead: ➡ I couldn’t get to the so called social network… I didn’t find the entry point :( . I managed to get to the three previous entry points though by bruteforcing them but then I was stuck 🤷‍♀️. ⬅

Anyway that was intense, I got really scared the first time the system overheated and never let that happen again ever.

totteriludum 2021-10-06 22:14

@noethelazydev @chainsawmcd @ekilibr @timo-strating @crazyrems Thanks for your feedback! We might possibly make a post-jam version of the game later on, which would include more helpful features. A blog post about how we developed the game might also follow shortly.

gamermomentum 2021-10-07 21:39

Couldn't figure out how to play but it was a nice terminal game.

llaumegui 2021-10-08 10:18

I felt really intrigued by this game, i will probably try playing another day in (I hope so, a new version) as i felt a little bit lost at the moment. From where i stopped, i found it really polished and smartly made ! That's the kind of games i'll love to know more, feel free to post some Devlogs, i'd love to read them !

Overall i liked what i was playing and will gladly go back in the future ! Congratulations !

bluecalx 2021-10-08 10:33

Very nice 'escape game' entry ! The terminal feels good even if the commands are a bit weird. I was happy to see that you kept command history, but sad that I couldn't edit my command with Left/Right arrow :(

The mood is so on point I felt like a true h4x00r. I had a great time unfolding the plot and tracking down the bad guy. Also had to open a notepad on my own to keep track of the hints I uncovered along the way, which is a good sign of a well executed treasure hunt.

The only real downside for me is that I felt that the 'unstability' wasn't really incorporated in the core game. Rebooting because of CPU overheat felt gimmicky and not really needed. Maybe I shouldn't have opened a notepad on my own and use ingame /write command to keep track of the hints I gathered.

Anyway, thanks for the game, I had a really good time playing it !

koalaura 2021-10-08 23:39

By far my favourite jam game I've played so far! I'm a sucker for hacking simulators and narrative games, and this had both!

In my excitement on my first playthrough, I got kind of stressed by the time (which I later realised doesn't keep going in between certain story points). Because of that I just skimmed through every text and didn't really read everything which caused me to pick the wrong suspect.

By this time I was very invested and read every file again, which led to me choosing the right person this time!

Honestly very interested in the backstory of the other characters now! Do you have ideas for those?

Really loved playing! Only thing I could think of mentioning is that the indication of the overheating could have maybe been more clear? Other than that everything was amazing!

totteriludum 2021-10-09 15:11

@gamermomentum @llaumegui @bluecalx @koalaura Thanks for your feedback!

Regarding the overheating, the screen slowly turns a stronger hue of red as the temperature rises. Although I suspect that programs such as flux or similar could interfere with the colouring.

jackaljk 2021-10-09 16:02

Nice concept and great execution! I have only played a few minutes, it feels like a real command prompt and I liked the brute force minigame. A few quality of life improvements would be great, like allowing the left arrow key to move the cursor back one character and the home key to move it at the beginning of the command. Also, some old PC/modem sounds and loud key pressing would have made this even more immersive. The heat mechanic feels like it's there just to fit the unstable theme rather than being important to the game. Maybe it should have been a minigame that interrupts you every now and then? Maybe there should be graphical glitches that get worse and worse until the temperature is fixed? Anyway good job, I'll make sure to play the game to completion at some point!

zimny11 2021-10-10 11:54

Interesting game. I like the whole concept of the game as well as screen effects. I like text-base game, so that's a win for me as well. Good job!

hermitao 2021-10-10 19:19

Love this game! Especially because it looks so much like Linux.

denatus 2021-10-10 19:33

Nice game with some frustrating limitations. Took me a while to figure out that you actually have to type "run" before a command, that is not how my terminals work. Also wish you could just open more tabs like windows terminal.

soulo 2021-10-13 19:07

One of my favourite games of this jam! I'm a Linux user, so the terminal looks so realistic and familiar. The mechanic of overheating is really necessary, and this is an interesting interpretation of the theme.

Unfortunately I didn't manage to pass the game, because English is not my native language, and the computer always restarts while I'm translating the texts 😅 Maybe sometimes I will do it.

ultrarat 2021-10-16 06:53

Great game. This is one of the most complete narrative games I've seen in LD, congrats. I had fun but still lost.

I bought so much into the world thanks to the CRT effects that every time I couldn't get left/right arrow/home and repeat key pressed didn't work it was a super jarring fantasy break, which means the rest of it is really immersive. That said props for putting in up arrow as a priority, I am for sure one of those people who will hit up 20 times to not retype "ls" :)

gamebucha 2021-10-20 17:52

It was definitely a fun time.
