This game is actually not that bad. Sure your graphics aren't amazing and it's really simple but that isn't really an issue. It was playable and interesting enough to play for a few minutes. I'd just suggest that you upload your games to somewhere like itch.io so that you can get more feedback since most people aren't willing to download a game out of your google drive. Exporting it out of unity as a web build would also get more people to play it since they don't have to download anything.

We've all made a game like this before, don't lose hope on building games, if you keep making games you'll end up being able to make amazing games :)

fatebreak 2021-04-26 13:11

You should probably zip all your game data together as one file. As it is, I wasn't able to figure out how to download and arrange all the necessary files myself. I'd love to try it though!

blockerz 2021-04-27 01:47

You should be proud! You made something fun in a weekend that other people can enjoy. I like typing games and thought it was cool.

diaonic 2021-04-27 01:48

Nice I appreciated the simplicity of it, it wasn't clear what the bait was for, but I used it anyway :). Nice job!

lithia-studios 2021-04-27 01:49

I like the idea of a combination of typing and fishing.. I haven't seen that before.

armytag 2021-04-27 01:57

Fun game! There graphics weren't that bad, they had a bit of charm to them, although I would have liked to see my fishing line so I'd know when I'd cast it. Also, it would be nice if the points were somewhat related to the length of the words, I managed to get "parthenogenesis smoking" but just got the normal reward :( Seemed to change difficulty with the different locations too, which is a nice feature. Good work!

chris-delta 2021-04-27 01:57

somewhat endearing

words funny

art goofy

politics unwelcome

very samey

be confident

muzakefron 2021-04-27 02:12

wow this is super cool! simple but very fun and intuitive

breadstix 2021-04-27 21:26

@chris-delta I thought it was fun when I first added it but I regret having the little political jab in there now. Thanks for the feedback. I truly appreciate it.

breadstix 2021-04-27 21:28

@armytag That is very solid and accurate feedback. It is something I wanted to do, increase chances of higher payout fish based on the word length, but time limitations prevented it from happen. Thanks for playing my game and providing great feedback :)

digitalcrest 2021-04-27 23:03

I think this is a good result from only two days of development. Using a type writing game as a base for the theme was an interesting choice. Personally I would have hoped for the mechanic to be even more in theme (for example getting to fish deeper the more words you manage to write or something like that). The only advice I can give for future jams is to keep things simple, like I think you managed to do here. It's all about picking the fight you're most interested in in a jam, whether it's a nice mechanic or making a good looking game. :)

sam-wallach 2021-04-28 00:43

Pretty fun game, seems like it could be the base for something really good

secret-magic-404 2021-04-28 05:51

Awesome! I haven't played a typing game in years!

This is a great idea and use of the theme. I had fun fishing and typing

I only hoped that it would go little faster. It would have been nice to be able to adjust the difficulty, but 48 hours is not a lot of time to add these kind of options, so it's perfect just the way it is!

fatebreak 2021-04-28 13:38

Nice job! It's pretty slow going, but that's pretty true to real world fishing lol. Would have liked to see it expanded. Well done!

quoclon 2021-04-29 02:01

I like derpy art style, so I thought this was decent. As someone else mentioned, would have been cool to see the line, or some kind of indicator of fish. Also, I think it would be cool to make the sentences a little more interesting. And, having longer or more complex sentences have bigger rewards. Overall solid effort :)

ripter 2021-04-30 23:26

I had a lot of fun playing this one. At first I thought something was broken because I didn't have my sound on and there is a delay before the words show up (When you can hear the real clicking). Glad I turned my sound on :D The word choices are good, with them getting harder as you fish in larger bodies of water.

Honnestly, you can be proud. Personnaly I really felt the love you put into making this game. Yes there are a lot of rough / quirky things, but well that's the point of the compo jam and that's perfectly fine: we're here to have fun.

I'm also quite happy to see a typing game here because that's clearly unusual and quite original, even if it's a "straightforward" gameplay.

And for the art, well yeah, its paint level but we understand it and it works.

Overall yeah, it's not the game of the year but it's a cute entry of the jam, and you have absolutely no reason to be ashamed of anything about it. Everything is rough, but the game works, you have a complete gameloop, which is already a great thing.

So yeah, Bravo for achieving this in 48h ! I hope to see you again doing even better paint art in a next jam o/

zondarg 2021-05-01 01:05

Really not a bad game at all. And had never seen a typing and a fishing game combined before. It's an easy to understand mechanic too, and works well. Could maybe use a little more variety, if you find time pictures of the catched fish might be nice too. Good work!

tanis 2021-05-01 13:29

Simple but it's got potential. I would see this as a casual game on a mobile phone with improved graphics and some reward perks on your quest for fishing

liam 2021-05-01 13:39

Sure, it needs more polish, a few little animations would go a long way! However: The audio and theme worked well! I had fun! Definitely agree with some of the others that a ramp in difficulty would also improve things.

kr4ft3r 2021-05-01 20:28

Better than any other fishing sim on the market. Seriously, I'm amazed that a game with paintbrush graphics and such simple mechanics has had me hooked until I managed to reach the ocean. It is very good that you can instantly press F as soon as you are done with previous catch, without pause and wasting time on some sort of a sequence, that helped me get sucked in. And simplicity of graphics gives it some special charisma, good job.

And I learned what "discombobulated" means.

roolow 2021-05-02 02:13

As others have mentioned, any time you finish a game during a jam, that's something to walk away feeling good about. But to have a game that's also fun? That's great. I don't believe I've seen typing mixed with fishing before, and it was pretty satisfying to type out some catches. It kept me engaged to see where things went. That's victory! Good job, and here's to the next one being even better!

candlesan 2021-05-03 03:43

Cute little typing game. I wasn't sure what the bait would do. I bought it but I couldn't tell if it did anything for me. I like the sound and being able to purchase access to different areas.

thegreenworm 2021-05-03 18:21

Went all the way to the ocean ! I didn't know I was into typing games, but this one fun ! If you want to improve this game, I'd suggest adding some kind of reward when you manage to type the words quickly. The fact that te words got longer when you go to bigger water bodies is a clever way to make a difficulty curve !

gul 2021-05-05 19:34

I really enjoyed this. Would be awesome to expand on the idea with more upgrades and locations. Great job!

adrupen 2021-05-10 18:57

Pretty solid game! Typing words fast is strangely addictive

lmb 2021-05-10 23:54

You should be proud indeed, this *is* a game! I had fun, thanks for making it!

Some random comments:

* I missed the typewriter sound when pressing backspace. (Really, felt a bit weird to fix errors without the same feedback I get for other keys). * Speaking of sound, I see you mentioned freesound.org in your tools list. As far as I understand, this by itself is OK, but please take a look at the derivative works explanation on the [rules page](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/rules), to make sure you are complying with them. (I, on your position, would have added an explanation on how I changed any downloaded sound samples in order to be very open about it. And please, don't take me wrong: this is not an accusation, or anything like this!) * I liked the idea of buying "tickets" to fish on other places. Doesn't add that much to the gameplay, but makes the game feels more like a "real" game. * Don't belittle your graphics! I agree they are probably not good enough for an AAA game, but they are not bad. Programmer art is not a bad thing! * You could easily make this into a commercial "typing training game". Would likely not be a super sales success, but I guess it could sell some and would be a nice experience for you if you ever intend to make a commercial game. (But I am saying this without first-hand experience, I never published a commercial game!)

All in all, a very nice Ludum Dare debut! Hope to see you again on the next edition!

mhanapole 2021-05-14 05:32

I enjoyed this game! There was something satisfying from catching the fish after typing the prompt. I would have liked some more defined progression or something else to do with the money you got and a proper ending. I felt like the first and last areas were a bit pointless since you can immediately go to the second area with the $500 starting money, and getting to the last area feels like the ending.

breadstix 2021-05-14 20:33

@lmb Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate you taking the time to provide such detail in your comments. I know it takes time to do that and it means a lot.

I'm concerned about what you said about the sounds. While I did thoroughly read the rules and actually consulted them again during the competition because I had a question about code re-usage, I thought I had an understanding about the derivative stuff. I assumed because the asset was there for everyone that it was ok to use. Sort of like using an engine or and IDE. This has be a bit worried. Should I withdraw somehow? I mean it pretty obvious I'm not going to be a winner of any sort. I just wanted to have the experience of competing and the feeling of completing a game so I've got what I wanted out of it.

lmb 2021-05-15 23:24

@breadstix I am not in the position to give The One True Interpretation of the Compo Rules, but _my_ interpretation is that all assets (except fonts) must be either created from scratch during the 48 hours, or must be derivative work of some other preexisting asset. I'd say there is a good deal of judgment on what constitutes "real" derivative work, but I think the fact that the asset "is there for everyone doesn't change anything.

I really didn't mean to make you concerned! I am pretty sure you did everything in good faith and you are doing things in the spirit of the compo! Should you withdraw somehow? Again, I am not the one running Ludum Dare, so I can give only my opinion: just relax, maybe do some more research on what the rules really mean and do different next time if you conclude you did "wrong" now.

One of things I like most about Ludum Dare is the community. I always learn a lot from the comments I get and I try to help the others to learn too. In my book, you are a good member of the community, not someone trying to break the for fame and fortune. So, relax and keep learning! (And if you happen to be one of the top games of the compo, well, then maybe contact the organizer and get everything straight to decide what to do.)
