For some reason they often died after collecting a star

reino-angelo 2020-04-21 08:59

first of all the graphics was really good from the shader of the water, to the colors even down to the model of the duck good job. but having the camera move while figuring out the level can be tough, it would be better i think if it was stationary. the duck also moved so fast sometimes i didnt know what happened haha. level design is also on point for this type of game. overall a good game :) congrats !

yxmx-rsx 2020-04-21 12:52

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll see what I can do about it on the post jam version.

marcusnystrand 2020-04-22 18:07

Beautiful game, nice and simple concept! Little bit tricky to understand at first but still good!

julienlussiez 2020-04-22 18:09

A very well executed game. Maybe the arrows could be seen directly when you play the game or maybe you should add clearer instructions because I had trouble at the beginning to find how to play. I use the arrows on my keyboard... But after that, I really enjoy the game, it's quite inventive and the graphics are cool. It's a good concept, you should push it further if you have time. Well done !

thornduck 2020-04-22 18:10

I really like the concept, good job! :D

r3l0ad1 2020-04-22 18:11

Very nice game! i love the idea of the game, great job!

rustim 2020-04-22 18:12

Nice looking game. It took me a while to figure out how to play, and I am not sure if was collecting the stars correctly. An innovative concept though, well done!

squid 2020-04-22 18:19

Good looking game. The rules feel a little inconsistent, it is really hard to tell what is going to move first. Sometime I get pushed to the star first and collect it and sometimes the star moves away first and I dont.

mitjmcc 2020-04-22 18:20

The timer is good for pressure, but it felt too short. By the time I got the hang of the controls and making waves, I had run the time out 3 times. No one else mentioned that, so it could be just me ha. Agree with them on the concept and graphics.

ashashza 2020-04-22 18:23

Like others, I really liked the look of this. Particularly the water.

I thought it was quite a clever puzzle mechanic and wanted to really settle in to figuring out the levels! Pity the time limits are so short, it meant I felt pretty rushed. I feel like the core puzzle has enough interest and challenge to stand on it's own and could do without the time pressure.

Moving the camera around felt like it hurt more than helped, i guess because the time limit meant I needed to spend time on moving the ducky, not the camera. Also there are some angles / positions where it's really tricky to get the arrow to appear / work.

Overall, cool jam!

owen-rees 2020-04-22 18:26

This game was great although I had a bit of difficulty pressinng the arrows to move the waves. The artwork was really nice too. Good work!

maskrosen 2020-04-22 18:33

I like the graphics a lot, as some others have said I also feel the timer is a bit to quick. It would be nice to have little bit more time on the levels. Otherwise it was a good and puzzle experience. Good job!

nk-x-x 2020-04-22 18:44

Really love the aesthetic & feel! Great work and fun idea.

The addition of a timer was brilliant! Felt super frantic and exciting, which took me by surprise and I enjoyed it a lot.

My only complaints is the puzzle difficulty felt a little unfair - usually it felt like I only lost 'cos I got a sudden crazy hard level after a string of easier ones. I saw the star spawn inside a wall once, too, which I think made it impossible?

zguba 2020-04-22 18:46

First I want to let you know I like the idea of the puzzle but they definietly need more thought in design cause right now its just more of a arcade game than puzzle.

Second, I found few game braking glitches.

1. You can push star into the block bug2.png

2. You can keep playing after time passed.

Side note: animation of the wave could have been way prettier than it is now, more aligned and smooth, even using just DOTween :)

Cheers!

sharbelfs 2020-04-22 18:58

In my case I also died a few times after getting the star, maybe a bug or something. Some of the level seems almost impossible to win in the amount of time you have. And in my case the first thing I always did was to change the camera to have some sort of top view of the level, this way everything becomes more clear and easier to understand. Overall, game is fun to play and well done.

yolziii 2020-04-22 19:32

Nice mechanic! On the third time tutorial was a little disappointing, but I like the idea ) Good job!

add-an-a 2020-04-22 19:43

This icon stood out for me on itch.io. The water shader and the colour choices are really nice. In terms of gameplay, I found it to be quite punishing. The time often ran out before I had time to figure out the basics.

Well done though, I think it's a cool concept for a puzzle game.

meme-310 2020-04-24 02:32

I reached 110 xD . I liked the idea. puzzle game is my type. Good job.

yxmx-rsx 2020-04-24 07:01

@marcusnystrand Thank you so much for the kind words!

@julienlussiez @squid Right! the instructions could have been clearer. Thanks for the feedback.

@thornduck @r3l0ad1 @rustim Thanks a lot, I spent so much time trying out ideas. Designing games is hard XD

@mitjmcc Because I haven't seen anyone play my game I was clueless about how unfair the time was  Thanks for letting me know.

@ashashza You made some good points about the view and camera, thank you.

@owen-rees Thank you for the nice words and for the feedback.

@maskrosen Noted. Thanks :)

@nk-x-x Thanks for letting me know about this bug, it really helps.

@zguba I'll check Dotween for the post-jam version. You brought up some good points, thanks a lot.

@sharbelfs Good point for the camera, thank you.

@yolziii Glad, you like the mechanic, and thanks for the feedback.

@add-an-a You are right about the timer! Thank you for the feedback.

@meme-310 Thanks for playing and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

tom-robson 2020-04-25 15:46

Was a fun game! The shaders were really nice!

I think the design could use a bit of work, as a lot of the levels were super easy. A couple ideas could be to add a set number of waves you can make, as I felt that if I made a mistake it rarely went punished, so limiting my resources would be a nice catch. Also, I never found the shark to be particularly threatening, it only killed me once because I was taking ages to look at the level and it spawned super close. Also, I'd speed the timer up, I didn't once feel like I was being rushed by it.

But, I'm gonna be honest, puzzles are hard, I've always struggled with them, so good job for getting a solid foundation for a good puzzle game! Give it a bit of work after the jam and I would love to play more!

despdair 2020-04-25 15:54

a relaxing music would be a perfect fit for this game. It is great. Do you randomly generate levels? Or is it random selection among premade ones

gamer-fates 2020-04-25 15:56

Great innovative puzzle. Relaxing and fun game! Good job!

yorsh 2020-04-25 16:03

It's a nice idea, and the game is cute. It lacks a bit of polish tho, but that's always a struggle when going solo.

yxmx-rsx 2020-04-25 16:32

@tom-robson Thanks for playing and for the feedback. I'll try experimenting with having a limited set of waves. Also for the timer you are right, it's slow at the start of the game, but if you progress to the 100-200 score range then it becomes fairly challenging. Nonetheless, you made some good points and I'm going to see what I can do about it for the post-jam version, thank you.

@despdair Thank you, yes I wish I had music. For the levels, they are randomly generated with seeds. I can influence the layout and obstacles occurrence. First, it layout the water tiles, then the obstacles. When laying obstacles it unchecked spots already taken so other objects cannot spawn there. Then runs a few functions to make sure that it doesn't completely close off levels or spawn stuff on top of each other. After that, it spawns game entities like the player, sharks, star.

@gamer-fates Thanks a lot for your comment. Happy that you enjoyed it.

despdair 2020-04-25 16:43

@yxmx-rsx thx for details. If it is not asking much, does it check that possibility of player to solve puzzle. Like for some settings star can easily be unreachable. Or you have some clever logic behind prevents that at random generation. I am working on alike random generation but solutions I found for problem of finishability takes lots of computation right now

yellowlime 2020-04-25 16:58

The instructions at the beginning were a bit too much text :book:, that could have been improved by small tutorial levels. Also the penalty for dying could have been restarting the level. I didn't notice an increase in difficulty, maybe because the levels were auto-generated? My best score was 90 (I think, because the Game Over screen hides the score). Good puzzle concept. Also, cute graphics :v:

zaiuspanda 2020-04-25 17:55

So cute, but I don't see much progression on levels.

yxmx-rsx 2020-04-25 18:00

@yorsh Thanks, and true indeed.

@despdair No it doesn't, sorry. The way I set it up it is rarely unsolvable though. Because of the few functions, I mentioned earlier. But, I'm sure but it can happen on later levels if the obstacle rate becomes too high. Thanks for asking, now I know I have more stuff to think about.

yxmx-rsx 2020-04-25 18:32

@yellowlime I do agree with the instructions part. That's the plan for the post-jam version. There is an increase in difficulty, as you progress through the levels you have slightly less time to complete them, also more obstacles are getting in the way and the shark tends to be closer to the duck. It depends on how far you were able to reach. The early levels are very easy to make sure the player is comfortable. Thank you for your feedback.

@zaiuspanda Thank you for your comment. The difficulty increases bit by bit as you progress through the levels. If you can get a 100's+ score the game will become quite challenging. Less time, more obstacles, the shark will be closer.

vaizaragorn 2020-04-25 22:46

Wow, I really liked the concept, after a bit polishing and good sound effects this could be a good game to release. You should keep working on it!

yxmx-rsx 2020-04-25 23:16

@vaizaragorn Thanks for playing and for the words of encouragement.

fabrizio-spadaro 2020-04-26 08:00

Nice game I love puzzles, cute graphic and mechanics, great entry!

duck-reaction 2020-04-26 10:22

Very cute game. The ideal is very original. I have got a texture issue, but I still enjoy the game. You should improve the GUI.

Good job.

cptn-b 2020-04-26 18:12

Hey, those waves look familiar! Reminds me of Zelda Windwaker. How did you create those waves?

yxmx-rsx 2020-04-26 18:47

@fabrizio-spadaro I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks!

@duck-reaction Thank you. I'll look into it.

@cptn-b You can create it by following this tutorial https://twitter.com/i/status/925036278005018624

cptn-b 2020-04-27 11:10

@yxmx-rsx thx mate^^

dennerbougo 2020-04-28 19:17

great game.

yxmx-rsx 2020-04-29 03:16

@dennerbougo TY :)

ultrabill 2020-04-29 07:26

The game is great, and the art look cool!Just a lack of sound effects, but that's okay for the short delay of development x) I just had a problem in my game, where the shark and the star were in the same space. Still, the game is funny and cool, Great job :)

yxmx-rsx 2020-04-29 21:58

@ultrabill Thanks for your feedback!

sticmac 2020-05-03 07:21

Hey it was an enjoyable game  Spent a nice little time playing it, even though I got the feeling that some levels were not solvable? Like I didn’t figure out how to make it to the star, and sometimes i had the star and the shark in the same place  Nice one though!

duke 2020-05-03 10:49

played a couple of rounds and it seemed to work pretty well. It was not always clear how far the cut or the star would go when making waves, so a little try and error were needed (at least for me) Since there seemed to be no punishment for just spamming waves, the levels were pretty easy to beat. The art was very nice, loved the isometric voxel look. This game could definitely use some sound and music :) Would help a lot to increase the enjoyment.

Nice entry all in all. Good job!

retrome 2020-05-03 11:23

Nice stylish graphics. Interactive tutorial, more gameplay variations/obstacles/enemies and some sound effects would be great.

minnka 2020-05-03 15:42

I like the style and was quite a cool game. would be more fun with audio.

yxmx-rsx 2020-05-03 23:57

@sticmac Thank you for playing. Right, there is still some stuff I gotta fix.

@duke You made a good point about showing/knowing how far the wave would push. I should do something about that. Thanks for your comment.

@retrome Good suggestions, thanks for the feedback.

@minnka Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it.

turritom 2020-05-06 18:19

interesting concept. definitely fun. sometimes it's suddenly game over and then I don't understand why.

yxmx-rsx 2020-05-07 04:23

@turritom Thanks. It might be the shark that caught you. I should showed more feedback for that.

lazzydev72 2020-05-07 09:17

it is super inovative. I like it. :v:

yxmx-rsx 2020-05-08 05:48

@lazzydev72 TY :smile:

ava-skoog 2020-05-11 18:28

Cute ducky! 💜 Love the look of the water, too. Someone said the rules were a bit confusing and inconsistent-feeling and I agree, but maybe I just missed something? I love puzzles anyhow, and having an enemy on the board to also worry about is something I don't see in a lot of games like this, so that was very cool. It's too bad you didn't have time for audio, but game jams are game jams! 😅 Cool game!

yxmx-rsx 2020-05-12 17:53

@ava-skoog Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
