I love how frantic this feels, the sound of the screen approaching is perfect. My best score was 35. My only nitpick is that the yellow spaces confused me at first, I think there should be an example showing how they are used with only one yellow letter for extra clarity.

ed3187 2020-04-21 15:16

Hey nice, game. I got a bit confused at first but figured it out. Maybe I missed the instructions

lairinlair 2020-04-21 15:26

Work of art. Pretty hard for a non native english speaker. The concept matched perfectly with sound and music. Great work

anoushcat 2020-04-21 15:27

Nice take on the theme, really fun! I'll definitely think about the game next time I take an elevator :D It's quite hard though (especially since I'm French :D) , and kinda difficult to understand which letter we should align or not. Good job! :)

elmos-minion 2020-04-21 15:27

Great game and concept! I got awkward silence every time though.. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

joe-wright 2020-04-21 15:30

Really nice presentation, but it often just didn't let me type letters with no feedback to indicate what was happening

neuronezero 2020-04-21 15:32

Great concept, game has a good feeling. I'm just bad with words... and that's why I always take the stairs...

patrik-l 2020-04-21 15:39

Wow, this was really fun! The game feels really polished and everything fits together nicely.

raivk 2020-04-21 15:57

That was... COOL ! Really great aesthetics, and really original concept. Even if I'm not a native english speaker, I was able to find words and reach floor 10 ! Super cool entry.

llwyd 2020-04-21 16:00

Really cool idea, great concept and nice accompanying audio. If this was a phone app I'd play it :)

Love all your games and this is no exception! Took a while to get used to remembering where vowels/consonents are in words.

To be honest, idk how else the game can be better. Maybe more colours that appear the further you go?

winterbeak 2020-04-21 16:48

- Spent five minutes in total confusion! Though the game is really fun once you get the hang of it - Aaagh, my vocabulary keeps giving me words that end with "T"! - Wanted to type antidisestablishmentarianism, but I suppose that doesn't count as "small talk" - Seems you can go to another tab to "pause" the game and think about your next move. I didn't take advantage of it, though! - Sometimes, the game will start you with a mistake. Not too much of a big deal, though impossible.jpg - Amount of time I spent since first loading the game to get a satisfying high score: 48:01, with a score of 37! - Words that I keep typing for some reason: owl, gear, teem, rig, ghost

argon 2020-04-21 16:50

Very good concept ! As a non english person it takes me a some time to understand and I struggle bit with getting my word accepted but I found the idea excellent ! Quick question : how does it work to know if a word will be understood or not ?

palsina 2020-04-22 13:45

Confusing at first, and then really addicting. Great graphic desing too.

le-slo 2020-04-22 15:24

--Comment duplicated, sorry for the inconveniences--

le-slo 2020-04-22 15:35

@stevenjmiller Thanks for the feedback! I agree about the yellow section in the how to play, probably Vertical Letters could have done a better job, but it didn't occurred to me while doing it. I'll probably change it once the rating phase is done (too late, but hey, it is what it is).

@ed3187 Thanks! Confusion is common in my games, but more because of negligence than design. I had very little time to make the game (I started sunday evening), so I predicted some lost players at the start!

@lairinlair Very much appreciated! And I agree with you with the non-native speaker difficulty, I'm spanish, so I'm pretty bad at the game too, hahaha.

@anoushcat Thank you for the feedback! I 100% agree with you, because I'm spanish so I sucked at the game when testing (I was afraid some bugs appeared at high scores, but as far as I know everything works fine there).

@elmos-minion Haha, thanks! FWIW, everyone gets Awkward silence at the end, it's more a highscore endless word-er runner than a game with an specific objective.

@joe-wright Thank you for your comment. You are right, that is one of the things I most regret, not giving a proper feedback (not even a SFX...) when failing to write: in a vertical line you can only have a distinct letter and you need to chain the letters, so I you have undo you could do: undO - Orbit, or unDO - DOmino, but not something like uNdo, Nothing. I hope that clarifies something! Thanks for playing!

@neuronezero Hahaha, I do take the elevator where I work, and when I'm not shy, I almost always ask the question "What's your favorite food?" It's an easy one, and always last longer than talking about the weather. Thanks for playing.

@patrik-l Thank you very much for your kind words!

@raivk Wow, very glad you liked it! My current record is 18, but I heard some people, don't want to discourage you reached 100 floors. I need to learn some english. The trick is to use small talk (short words).

@llwyd Thanks! I'll consider the phone app!

@rubyleehs Thank you for you kind words! Yeah, apart from making a bit clear the objective, the procedurality of colours could be better (I got 4 yellow bars in a row in my last run) as well as the logic of the black bars. I did think of triple letters, maybe it's possible while preventing players to write a word and then its plural, because that's basically a free floor.

@winterbeak Thanks for taking the time to write! That's an awesome score, far beyond my record. The current max are 15 letter words, I used some TXT with english words and that was all, and yes, that will be a very awkward conversation for an elevator ride! Mmm, the pause trick is interesting, I'll see what can I do about that, thanks for pointing it out! And yes that's a know bug, I changed the last minute the length of the initial word without changing the colour filler function, so that's a bummer (specially if it appears in that first five minutes of confusion!). My classic words are: sand, dome, lie and error.

@argon Very much appreciated! For the dictionary detection I had 14 files with each one all X letter words (from 2 letter words to 15 letter words), then I add them to lists at the start of the game (I have separated them because in the windows build the load time is much longer, so I could add a loading screen that changes depending on the number of letters of the words being loaded so it's not just super boring), once having that, a basic search to see if there is a specific value in the list whenever the player press accept or space and done!

@palsina Thanks for commenting! Sorry about the confusion, I tried my best with the little time I had (I only had half an hour to prepare the how to play) so it isn't clear what to do, hopefully mechanics aren't convoluted enough to let the player understand the as they play. Thank you for playing!

joe-wright 2020-04-22 16:26

@le-slo that's really helpful, thank you! I'll have another go, it seems like a lot of fun!

inefficientchunkofcode 2020-04-22 17:25

Kept playing for a while! I know that a lot of people have already said this, but I'm going to say it again because it's true: This is one of the most original and entertaining games I have played on this LD so far! NICE GAME!

amigopadilha 2020-04-22 20:45

Awesome game! This concept is realy cool, enjoyed it a lot!

gimblll 2020-04-23 05:53

I really enjoyed this, thought it was quite confusing at first. A bit of interface polish and it's perfect!

emmatw 2020-04-24 17:53

Really good take on the theme and beautiful presentation, nice colours, font and audio! At first I thought there was some problem with the input, but then I ckecked the comments and saw that it's not a bug, just some lacking feedback, which is fine, you still managed to accomplish a lot in this short time, well done!

leetchi-heda 2020-04-24 21:24

really nice try, pretty hard for a french guy to play this in english but still fun, the audio fits nicely the idea is great and you are right in the theme, a bit confusing the first time you play. Great job

tony-redmer 2020-04-24 21:33

This was a bit confusing to get sorted through how it all works at first, but once I did it was a lot of fun! Very inventive, and the music is fantastic

ctrble 2020-04-25 00:58

I also had a hard time figuring out exactly how to build words that worked with the level, but aside from that I really enjoyed it! I thought it was a unique idea, the graphics and music fit it perfectly, and honestly I think the only thing that I would add is a tutorial level so people can interact with the rules before truly being thrown into the full game.

blubberquark 2020-04-25 10:48

This is really tightly designed, simple but surprisingly difficult. My only complaint is forgetting what the colours do. They are very abstract. I wish the game showed me a tooltip on mistyping a letter.

blushine 2020-04-26 05:51

Pretty tough, but it's really cool to see someone make a word game for the jam. I like the minimalist aesthetic, but I kept forgetting which color was which. It might have helped if the letters that you typed changed color to show whether you matched properly or not. It also seemed like long words were a disadvantage because it made it easy for the black bars to catch up with you, but maybe I just didn't understand that mechanic.

The choices of fonts and sounds were good. The music definitely had an elevator music feel. I liked the connection to the theme of keeping a conversation alive. But the gameplay didn't feel that much like a conversation, it's more like you're just talking to yourself. Some kind of AI that gives you words to play off of might have made it feel more conversational. Or maybe it could just be a game about talking to yourself in an elevator!

Very polished overall. You did a great job of pulling the parts together and keeping the theme cohesive.

took me AGES to figure how to play, but once i did... i've been playing a while O.O

i LOVE this! I think the tutorial was pretty confusing though. I appreciate the minimal tutorial screen, but it took me a while to realize the main game loop was, "pick a letter from the previous word to start with, and then type a new word, and hit enter to go down a floor and start a new word. The new word should follow four rules: 1. consonants go on blue 2. vowels go on cyan 3. letters in the same column have to match 4. you MUST use letters in yellow columns

.. although that's pretty verbose so idk. maybe just a gif showing somebody playing a few words?

I'm going to keep playing this for a while I bet. :D Thanks!

mahalis 2020-04-26 18:57

This is brilliant. Unique interpretation of the theme, straightforward but tough gameplay, and the music / sound sets the atmosphere perfectly. Outstanding work.

adamv 2020-04-27 00:37

I enjoyed it, but to be honest I don't think I ever completely figured out how to play  I liked the elevator aesthetic though!

ludipe 2020-04-27 11:12

Loved the concept and the presentation. I found the initial screen too confusing, even after playing a few times and getting to floor 20 there were some moments where I didn't fully understood why something happened. I think the core mechanic is pretty cool, but the introduction could be a bit smoother. Overall it's a super solid game. Well done!

n-o-games 2020-04-28 17:29

I really love this. As soon as I finally understood how to play I was just hooked. It was like drugs but with more awkwardness. The music was perfect and I love the minimal art style. I might go and play it again. it's not an addiction I swear I just need to get past level 12.

henrycgs 2020-04-28 22:09

This was the most fun I've had so far in this jam!! After I got the hang of it I couldn't stop playing!! It's actually addicting. It's simple and relaxing. It's super polished! The only bug I found was that sometimes, you would start on a mistake (ie. the word starts with a consonant in a light blue spot), but that was so rare I didn't really care. Great job! I think I might even play this again another time. Here's my highscore:
