RPG-style, not the usual game jam type of game, nice work !

vulpineblazeyt 2019-04-30 04:10

Beautiful JRPG in all the right ways. Pathing and the level changing was a little frustrating though lol

2019-04-30 13:35

I am not fond of rpg games, but I can't imagine how much work should be done on this game. Your really get the most out of jam hours. Look like fully completed game. Nice work!

nayrahbbt 2019-04-30 15:09

I think that it could make the game much better if you focused more on the concept of the curse and used it more in the gameplay mechanics instead of the typical RPG mechanics, but maybe that's just me, I'm not a fan of RPGs. Aside of that, I think it's a cute game.

Also, thanks for playing my game!

jofersgames 2019-04-30 15:14

Feels like so much work went into it, gj :) Main menu theme is pretty epic too xD

hildebrandt 2019-04-30 15:25

Since it's a RPG you should focus a little bit more in the story you were trying to tell. But it was a very nice game, remembered me my old times haha. Nice work

miu 2019-04-30 15:33

Thanks everyone, we did our best to complete this entry in less than 12h when we realised our first game couldn't be uploaded due to gamemaker trial restrictions so the game is not as polished as it could, next time we'll hopefully do better.

sarahneko 2019-04-30 16:51

Nice Game!

killedbyapixel 2019-04-30 16:56

Wow, thats awesome, strong final fantasy vibes! I beat it on my second try. That was pretty cool, good length. My main advice is to simplify and focus on polishing the most important stuff like the story.

team-on 2019-05-01 00:06

Quite unique to see JRPG in LD, so nice entry

lot9s 2019-05-01 03:39

Given that you made this in 12 hours, I'd say it's pretty great! I would have loved to see what you came up with if you had had more time.

ursagames 2019-05-01 07:14

Thank you for submitting your game to be played on my stream!

Once the stream is finished you can find the video here: https://www.twitch.tv/ursagames/videos If you want to know when it was played you can find your game in the queue here: https://tinyurl.com/y5rdokvp

saering 2019-05-01 14:38

I'm not sure I can rate your game. Since I'm not used to this kind of RPG games, I got lost, it went a bit fast for me, too much combat options and everything haha I can't really judge the game because I did not play it for a long time, but it is great to see an entry like this, that surprised me a lot!

Must have been a real challenge to achieve, good job for that ! I like the art, it's really great

miu 2019-05-01 14:44

thanks @saering I'll use your review for when I'll make a full game out of it someday. also yes I also think it is a bit fast, I'd have liked to be able to pace it better but it kinda match our mindset at the time: it was last day (12h left) , we just learnt we couldn't upload our first game and even if we knew our game wouldn't be that great we didn't wanted to abandon, so we were in a bit of a rush then.

oktarian 2019-05-01 17:16

Definitely reminds me of pokemon! Good game, especially the visuals!

caorjavier 2019-05-01 20:46

The plot of the game is fun. :dog:

thenerdster 2019-05-02 05:05

Story was lacking at times but art and pacing made up for it. Solid entry!

miu 2019-05-02 10:27

@oktarian @caorjavier @thenerdster thank you

megan-kozun 2019-05-03 23:13

Ah, good old rpg maker :) I'm a sucker for rpgmaker games, but this one was really great. The story could have been better paced, but its a ludum dare game so I understand rushing the story to get to the gameplay. All in all, great work! Had a good time. thank you :)

zoneoutapps 2019-05-03 23:28

Ran it on my MacBook Pro just fine! Great game...really loved your art! :)

shunaky 2019-05-03 23:30

It's good to see people still using RPG maker, It was my first engine that I really worked with, it was the RPG Maker 2k. Good old times...

Some tips about RPG maker, I saw that you used XV that is one of the latest (If not THE latest) - Try using some scripts, the raw engine is not that good, is good to start, but it can be improoved. There are several online comunities that you can join and search for stuff; - Try actually programming on the events system, you can do a LOT of stuff on that and get a good hang on how to program (I even learned how to program on the Rpg Maker with the event system) - Don't be afraid of trying something new on it, the Scripts on this engine (If they didn't change) is the RUBY, buuut, a lot of cool stuff is already done in those comunities, and most of them share them for free.

miu 2019-05-03 23:32

@megan-kozun thanks, we have a project to make it a full game in the future. @zoneoutapps thank you for testing it for mac, also thanks for playing it (art is native art of rpgmaker, we would've liked to make our own but didn't had time due to it being our second game that we rushed to make in 12h due to our first game being impossible to upload) @shunaky thanks, actually I was planning to use a script to make a custom HUD and a script to personalise the main menu but I ran out of time, I'll put them in the full version we're plannig to do for sure, though we may use more scripts but we didn't decided which yet. ah by the way thanks for your tips, I'll share them with my teammates who is the real beginner at that sort of things :).

simplepotential 2019-05-04 00:24

RPGMaker is a great tool, great assets to get you going quickly. Unfortunately I felt like I was mostly just running around. Didn't seem like I could ever find what I was suppose to do beyond the first encounter. Only ran into one other monster and otherwise I was just walking through scenes. For 12 hours of work, I'd say it is a solid entry though.

I'd echo @shunaky comments, I've used RPGMaker when I first started and you can really get into some powerful scripting. You'll still be bound to some of the engine's pit falls but it is a great place to start. The hard part is getting away from the fact that everyone knows it was RPGMaker :)

miu 2019-05-04 00:28

@simplepotential thanks we'll take that into account when making it a full game :)

shunaky 2019-05-04 01:20

@miu, when you make an rpgmaker game, try running from the sprites that comes with it, almost everyone on the game development area knows those sprites, and most of them will just skip it.

Try to use some scripts that release you from some constrains on the engine (Free 8directions movement, for example) There are some battle systems that a lot of people have created already that are freaking awesom, you should try them (trying to understand the code as well)

Just keep practicing,One thing that helps learning is doing puzzles (Like Sokoban) you will get the hang of it pretty quickly by challenging yourself ^^

Good luck on it and the most important, have fun!

miu 2019-05-04 07:09

@shunaky thanks for your advice but I actually already knew that, I actually didn't wanted to do things with rpgmaker natives assets but with only 1 pc and 12h that's just that we couldn't make new ones and a game in 12h

shunaky 2019-05-04 08:19

Oh, it was only 23 Hours?? So you did a pretty god job then

miu 2019-05-04 08:23

@shunaky nah it's just we planned to make another game then 12h before deadline we discovered we couldn't upload it due to some restrictions with gamemaker studio trial version that we didn't knew about (also thanks a lot)

shunaky 2019-05-04 08:36

@miu oh F* that's really unfortunate... At least now you know it ^^

miu 2019-05-04 10:22

@shunaky yup next time we'll surely make a better game :)

yadi 2019-05-04 22:55

holyshit this game has so much content. I haven't played JRPG in a while and this game really takes me back. excellent work! this is a really minor issue but I feel like the control is a little floaty. overall a great game!

miu 2019-05-04 23:00

@yadi thanks a lot :)

2019-05-04 23:25

Nice game, but I couldn't get past like 3rd screen i went down and left and there is a bug that makes you go screen to screen as you apear in place you can only go down which takes you back a screen.

Otherwise really nice job!

miu 2019-05-04 23:27

@cerkiewny thanks for your feedback, we're currently working on the post jam version so it'll be corrected next week.

cheesepencil 2019-05-04 23:33

Haha way to tie it to the theme

miu 2019-05-04 23:47

@cheesepencil thanks :)

copper-aardvark-games 2019-05-05 18:41

Really fun rpg game! Well done!

miu 2019-05-05 18:49

@copper-aardvark-games thanks :)

webox 2019-05-05 18:51

I didn't quite got the story and the wallet thing haha, maybe I didn't read well. It's always fun to play rpg maker games! Good Job!

miu 2019-05-05 19:11

@webox thanks, the curse on the wallet is that the money inside represent your health, the less money there is inside, the more health you lose (meaning the character get wounded by losing that money), during the game, the shady guy boss slash through the wallet, ripping it almost in half and causing the money inside to drop outside of the wallet thus causing health loss to the character. Also you get a point, in the full game, I'll make this point more obvious to the player

pl4typus 2019-05-07 18:54

Hey guys. So, I want to say the plot, the concept, the idea, whatever, is a really good and clever idea.

If I understood right this boy/dude/spirit (? what's up with that "I'm not a boy" thing btw?) stole or had a wallet which was curse and every penny he had inside was like a part of his life? Am I right?

Then, a guy makes a hole in this wallet which leads to the hero having his life taken away as long as he walks or do things which causes his money to be lost. Am I still right?

So, anyway, if I am indeed right, this is a **great** story. No other game I have played on the jam had an story idea that brilliant. I am talking _story_ idea.

Unfortunately, what your game lacks (and that's why I voted No to your poll) is that you don't lead this idea nowhere. Your "game" is actually just a mere playable cinematic. The idea you got, your concept, never was transformed into a gameplay mechanic, I believe. I may be wrong, though.

On second thought, I think you should definitely pursue this game and make it longer and thicker but if you make something out of this key idea: the pierced wallet.

Here are some suggestions or thoughts on how to develop that: - the hero could have to do some jobs to earn money. As this money gets lost every few steps, he'd have to think ahead of his movements and do the strict minimum to get the job done and, thus, be paid. - then, some trade system could be interesting: let's say that to leave the curse he has to go somewhere far away to meet a curse lifter (may it be the Witch), then it would be cool to have, all the way along the journey, nomad vendors or normal vendors with which you could buy things (food, maps, horses, etc)

Generally speaking, these are some thoughts on your game and your story: - what was the point with all these characters? instead of giving us a vast cast of characters we don't know nothing about (the child, the barmaid, the guy in tuxedo, the hero also, the witch), you should give us few characters but make clear what are their relations to each other, their personal motivation and why/what do they have to do with the story you're building. Too many of theses characters seem unjustified and arbitrary. I'm thinking of the Witch, for instance, what's with her? She resolves all the problems just like that! "Magic" is not always the good option to follow when you resolve the narrative tensions you've build. Instead, try to think of your characters personnalities: shall they fight? negociate? forgive? flee? etc. And if you trully want magic to come in, explain it a bit more. Let it be mysterious, it's not bad, but make us understand that something is happening and not just by telling us: "Oh, ok, it's done, magic and etc.". - I really think you should ditch or at least change a lot the fighting system. If your game is about currency and life, why bothering having this fighting system? Yeah I know it's RPG Maker. But then you should ditch it maybe.

Overall, the art and the music were good also, did you do them or was it from RPG Maker?

Anyway, I hope my comment was helpful. Please feel free to respond to me, your idea should be digged a bit deeper.

See u

miu 2019-05-07 19:45

@pl4typus You got the story idea right, I'm glad you find it good :) Anyway the character was made androgynous for immersion purpose (an idea we had for the game we wanted to make originally and that we couldn't upload due to restriction on upload with the version of the engine we used) but is actually a girl (maybe I did my job a bit too well in making her androgynous). All the "I'm no boy" thing was supposed to be a joke that I didn't had time to make clear about people mistaking girl player for 12 years old boy in multiplayer games. The reason why we want to make this game (actually just the story idea) into a full game is because we hate the way it currently is, we want to make it into a proper story. Actually we didn't wanted to use rpgmaker but we lacked time so much at the point we realised we couldn't upload our first game it was either that or giving up and we didn't want to give up. Edit: Forgot to say, tileset are from rpgmaker but I made the map myself and you can make your own mix of music in rpgmaker so music are from rpgmaker but mix of them is from me.

edevjogos 2019-05-13 22:31

You have a solid base for the game, and i was getting interested in the story, trying to undersand what was going on, but:

- So many loadings! is so annoying... - The background music at the witch house is too lowd and dosen't fit the plot. - The game is extremelly short, i guess it took 5min to beat the game, and that's because i read all the dialogs.

jharler 2019-05-14 16:51

Very cool game. I liked the story, even though it was a bit far fetched. Tied in nicely with the theme. I understand that English obviously isn't your native language and I have a lot of respect for you for knowing more than one language, but some of the broken grammar drew me out of the story. Other than that, everything was great. Nice work!

firesplash-entertainment 2019-05-15 16:41

Just played the game in our P&R stream thanks for submitting

miu 2019-05-15 17:51

@edevjogos thanks for playing our game, sorry for the loading, it's something we have no control over, it's part of the rpgmaker web experience I guess. Also yep, the witch's home theme may not fit the place as we used rpgmaker natives musics and had to rush decisions, I'm not sure there's a theme more fitting in the natives musics of rpgmaker though. Finally, we would've liked to make that game longer and better but we had to cut things short because time was up.

@jharler thanks, sorry for the broken grammar, I'll make another patch to fix it when I have time.

@firesplash-entertainment thanks for playing our game :)

archimagus 2019-05-16 01:37

Hey, pretty ambitious to attempt an RPG for a game jam. Although, using RPG Maker with built in art helps a lot in that regard. I don't know if I just got lucky or what, but I basically just ran straight to the witches house, and the witch fixed my wallet, and game over. I never got a chance to buy anything or spend my life. I fought a shady guy, and an ogre. Either way, I can see this becoming a much larger game. Cool stuff. Probably the most fun game I've played for the jam yet.

miu 2019-05-16 08:13

@archimagus thanks, we plan into making this part into a bigger forest in the full game, also we plan to separate the chase and the forest part

coleslaughter 2019-05-21 00:55

Hey, this is pretty neato! :) Wish there was maybe a bit more to it, though. I had more than enough MP to just spam Thunder throughout the entire game, so there wasn't much of a challenge there.

I did enjoy the graphics, music, and dialogue though! Rare to see humor land for me in jam games, so well done there!

miu 2019-05-21 06:41

@coleslaughter Thanks :)

philstrahl 2019-05-25 19:31

Late but still: Here's my playthrough of your game :) https://youtu.be/NxsO8deuXdo

miu 2019-05-25 19:47

@philstrahl Thanks for playing our game and for the feedback :)
