A solid entry to the jam, especially if it is your first one! The graphics are cute and the sound effects are outstanding! The physics can be a bit frustrating, but they work and that is what counts!

mrtnldm 2019-04-29 09:53

Thanks so much! It is a compo game, but I guess you meant as in game jam? :) Anyway thanks for an amazing first feedback! :)

jsec 2019-04-29 19:23

silly but funny. Physics are ..hmmm.. tricky

paul59 2019-04-29 19:27

Nice looking graphics and concept but I think it needs some refinement eg I can jump to the top of the screen on the first level but not over the plant pot. Yeah I bought the wrong thing - to complete that level I have to smack it out of the way. So the player has a 3 in 4 chance of starting off on the wrong foot (unless it can be jumped over with one of the other toys?). Nevertheless, I think it's pretty cool - well done :D

dumivid 2019-04-29 19:48

Very mixed feelings. On the one part we have a unique art style and some quality sound effect, on the other, game control is a fight against the game engine. Overall, the game is nice, but cat velocity makes it very hard move. Good luck with your next project!

tudvari 2019-04-29 20:01

Nice looking graphics, they are really nice.

The physics are a bit clunky. But once you got used to it, they are fine. They are a bit weird for a cat.

And next time get a cat for voice-over, it would have been much bettter

Good work!

mrtnldm 2019-04-29 21:39

@jsec @dumivid @tudvari yeah, i had a real struggle with the physics to get the movement to the level it is now. I must study the Unity movement mechanics/physics some more in this regard.

@paul59 yeah, I agree the plant pot definitely needs some refinement to make it more clear.

@ All of you - thanks for the feedback!

64mega 2019-04-29 21:42

I like your art style! Game is solid, though the movement feels a bit slippery sometimes (like walking on ice almost). Great job for a first game!

syrapt0r 2019-04-29 23:14

Hi  I played your game on my last livestream, here is the video if you want to watch it: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/418104572?t=00h51m18s

Love the artstyle, really well made for your first own game ^-^

dilauraba 2019-04-30 05:24

Really dig the hand-drawn art style! As others have mentioned the physics make the game a bit challenging to play, but it certainly has a charm to it.

I had a really good moment of joy when I realized I had to knock over the plant pot, haha. Great work!

meursault 2019-04-30 07:52

Really enjoyed the graphics and sounds but the controls are rough. For a platformer you mostly want direct control and not a real physics simulation. Like move to the right when i press right and jump and don't depend on gaining enough momentum. I mean this as advice, not being critical ;-) Good job for the first game you did on your own. Hope you will make another one!

mrtnldm 2019-04-30 19:44

@dilauraba haha, thanks. I tried my best to add a little puzzle effect in there :)

@meursault Thanks a lot for the constructive criticism. I guess I will give the direct controls a try next time. Although it has always felt weird for me that you can move while jumping.

gamesplusjames 2019-05-01 10:13

Well done! This was a bunch of fun to play, and I really liked that gameplay pun in the last level :)

ioleoso 2019-05-01 10:15

Love this cat game!(we had a similar idea!)^_^ I had some problem overcoming the plant pot but I loved the graphics, animating cats is tricky,I know :) You had the time to add menu and clear instructions and this is definitely a plus, since it's hard to find them in many submissions. Well done!!

evogengames 2019-05-01 15:42

5 star game, because I love cats, The graphics and sound effects were great as well!

Thank you for this game

mrtnldm 2019-05-01 18:36

@evogengames hehe, thanks! :) I am actually allergic to cats :(

@ioleoso @gamesplusjames appreciate it!

sylvie 2019-05-02 20:20

This is really cute! The physics were funny, I loved how the momentum works.

mrtnldm 2019-05-02 20:48

@sylvie thanks! :) There has been some different opinions on how the platformer controls should feel. I am glad you liked it. I think that while not perfcet and super intuitive I also like the momentum and not being able to move while in the air.

cheesepencil 2019-05-02 23:49

lol in Chrome I couldn't smack anything... I guess chrome would interpret the control key + moving right as create a new bookmark

very cute though i liked it

ropedog 2019-05-03 00:32

I really like the hand drawn look of this game. It's really unique, and it's super interesting to look at while playing. I also enjoyed the vocal meow's scattered throughout. Made me laugh a few times! The controls felt a little clunky, but once I got the hang of it I was able to make the more difficult jumps. Nice entry!

mrtnldm 2019-05-03 12:21

@cheesepencil thanks for finding a nice bug! It's not that chrome interprets the right+ctrl as a bookmark and I have no issues smacking things in chrome, BUT the smack collider is tied to the smack animation which is overridden by the move animation immediately if you keep the direction key pressed. Thanks again! :)

@ropedog thanks for a super nice review, glad it made you laugh :)

cheesepencil 2019-05-03 13:27

@mrtnldm I was using WASD for directional controls and it kept making bookmarks of your game because ctrl + D is "new bookmark" in chrome haha! I'll try again using arrow keys and standing still to smack later

mrtnldm 2019-05-03 13:30

@cheesepencil oh, like that ... :D yeah, I just confirmed it as well. Thanks a lot for pointing it out! I guess now at least you will always easily find the game

annie-owl 2019-05-04 08:52

The graphical and sound design of this game is super cute. Unfortunately, the fact that you can't control your character in any way while in the air makes the gameplay really irritating. If you fix that problem, this can be a really fun game with unique style

mrtnldm 2019-05-04 12:16

Thanks, @annie-owl, for good feedback! Will keep the controls in mind ;)

eduardo-yukio 2019-05-04 20:57

- The cat movement is very irritating: we can only jump forward if we had inertia before jumping and while on air we can't control it, it feels very bad :( - It has a very high bounce effect when hitting things, it doesn't make much sense haha. - I couldn't buy more than one item per lvl, which also doesn't made much sense because I had enough lives. - Why is there a orange bar at the bottom of the screen? - The Descriptions of the items have many typos - The cat simply got stuck while I was jumping from one platform to the other. It remained on the walking animation and didn't move anymore. - The sounds made with the mouth are funny though xD.

mrtnldm 2019-05-05 13:27

@eduardo-yukio Hi! Thanks a lot for a very thorough feedback. I'll provide some comments on it in case you are interested!

* A lot of people were annoyed with the controls. I tried to implement a bit of momentum based realism but that didn't turn out that well. I have always found it weird in platformers to move while in air. I will revise this when I finish and release the game. * I guess the bounciness was just to show you can't jump up through the platforms. * That was intentional as also described in the tutorial to give it a little bit of a puzzler effect. You can only choose one toy per level and every level requires one specific skill to make it through. * The colored strip at the bottom of the level is just a color scheme design element. That's just for the overall visual style and not a gameplay element. Appreciate this point a lot, I can see how it can create confusion sometimes :) * Thanks for pointing out the typos. I really didn't give anything a proofread :) * I know this bug. It has to do with incorrect collider placement/usage. * Thanks a lot. I had a lot of fun recording those.

Seriously, thanks a lot! I really appreciate this kind of criticism and feedback!

kaisean-games 2019-05-06 07:54

I've read some of the comments. Yeah, I see why you tried to go with realism, but during my game design research over the years I've found out that it's the approximation of realism or the lack thereof is what makes the games fun. Games are not necessarily simulations so it's fine if some physical laws are broken.

The reason why games usually allow moving in the air is the precision of landing which is IRL possible because you can precisely position your legs, while in games you are actually controlling the character as a point and rely on it's bounding box to be in the right position.

Finding the right balance between totally unrealistic and completely realistic is the whole point of game design

Now about your game. The graphics are nice :) However, the fact that you can pass some levels only with a single upgrade, does not really make it a choice. It'd be great if there were more options. But it's ok.

All in all, sweet entry. The human meow sounds are awesome  Keep up the good work.

mrtnldm 2019-05-06 19:26

@kaisean-games Yeah, you are right! I also recently, but after making that game watched a GDC talk "30 reasons I hate your game pitch" or something like that and the guy there also strongly pointed this out. I will make this better :)

Thanks for the great feedback! :)

miu 2019-05-09 15:52

So yes, the idea was nice, the ambiance and the sound too, but the controls were weird and frustrating, also I had a bug were controls were not responding anymore.
