There seems to be a bug and my health became stuck on 4

jcmonkey 2018-12-03 01:14

what version did you play?

jcmonkey 2018-12-03 01:57

@secretmapper i fixed it

baknik 2018-12-03 03:47

The scope of this is impressive. Huge map! The only things were the hit colliders were a bit frustrating, and I'm not sure if there's a reason to kill enemies or not. Cool game!

theseusinabottle 2018-12-03 03:51

It certainly plays well. It feels like the gameplay is solid the only times I felt like the game was cheating was with the green floor tiles. I wish there was a more noticable feature than just the noise for when you lose health. Something like a red flash or tint taking over the screen for a moment would really help inform the player. I really liked the little voice clips for when you enter the sacrifice room or place a key into its portal.

jcmonkey 2018-12-03 03:57

@theseusinabottle you are right, next time i wont overscope and concentrate on a better quality product over quantity. thanks for the feedback

pez 2018-12-03 04:02

Good job! I went with a similar mechanic only in reverse with the health system

serious07 2018-12-03 04:05

Cool game, but I think what some hitboxes are not accurate. I'm really like the mood and music of the game.

kbf123 2018-12-03 04:16

It was ambitious and I can respect the effort, but I can't say it felt that fun to play. Sorry.

Some dead bodies hurt me, others didn't... I couldn't see myself on the map, and the areas weren't distinct enough for me to tell where I was... Enemies were a chore to take out... I came across some attack and health spots that didn't seem to do anything... it just felt unpolished.

I get that most of the issues I have are likely due to time constraints, and I'm sure you know about them but still.

jcmonkey 2018-12-03 04:20

@kbf123 yeah i never did a top down dungeon crawler before so i completely overscoped it. next time i do one it will only be like 10 rooms, and not 45 so i can get more polish in.

chris-covert 2018-12-03 05:10

The right button attack seemed really weird, but the concept was pretty interesting. Would have loved to see what you could accomplish in more time.

jcmonkey 2018-12-03 05:20

@chris-covert OH SHIT i forgot to take that out, it was an attempt at another attack but i scratched it.

lemons 2018-12-03 05:20

I thought it was a good start, certainly could have used some more time but I liked it overall.

sargonius 2018-12-03 06:44

Good idea. The map is HUGE, it's a bit intimidating :-D

erasmus-crowley 2018-12-03 06:47

It's a solid effort. Large map. Metroidvania style map expansion with collectible keys is always enjoyable for me.

I was especially impressed with the zoomed out map view, though I didn't see any "YOU ARE HERE!" indicator, which would have been useful.

The sprites were all wonderful to look at.

Now the criticism part.

This game definitely needed more enemy diversity. The spinning blade totems made interesting enemies for the first couple of rooms, but quickly became frustrating. That combined with the high enemy HP made me stop playing instead of walking back to the sacrifice totem.

As others have noted, the combination of the hitboxes on the spinning blades and the character is causing strange results. I repeatedly took damage despite not being visibly touched by the blades.

I wish that the floor traps had a different sprite or something, because the first 10 or so times I stepped on one, I thought it was a bug that was making me take random damage.

daniel-abeleira 2018-12-03 11:26

The combat system is really satisfactory

jcmonkey 2018-12-03 18:02

@erasmus-crowley yeah i actually had a minimap system setup where it was a live minimap and live max sized map, but for some reason it was messing with my mouse coordinates and wouldnt rotate the character properly. i spent some time trying to find a fix for it and couldnt so i had to just go with the static one. also i scoped 3 mini boss fights to unlock the key doors and a final boss fight but yet some how i thought that was doable in 48 hrs, and i just had to throw totems all over the place to have some kind of game to let ppl play. spent too much time on things that i shouldnt have, and not enough on the things i should have. so lessons learned this time around.

rhou 2018-12-03 18:56

Very ambitiuse i really like how easy it is to get stuck into this game really fun just the collision but overaĺ i really enjoyed it

kelbg 2018-12-03 20:01

Good game, but there a few issues that have already been pointed out which are a bit annoying, like the hitboxes, not being able to tell where you are on the map, the apparently invisible traps (there's one on corridor to the right of the altar at the start).

Overall, I liked the atmosphere, the art, the music, which is simple but effective in setting the mood of the game. The combat can get kind of tedious quickly, as you always see the same type of enemy just with more hitpoints.

And another thing, the console keeps spitting this error:

ERROR: Node not found: enemytotem At: scene/main/node.cpp:1524

I don't know how it affects the game though.

john-gabriel 2018-12-03 20:16

I've found a bug where when you run over a key's location after you've already picked it up, it still makes the pick-up sound. Also, it seems like any damage that would take you to zero health doesn't register.

Anyway... it's quite monotonous. Enemies with spinning blades get old fast, and when I walk into a room with several dozen of them, that's when I decide I'm really not all that invested in seeing a game to the end.

tomdeal 2018-12-03 20:23

Good entry! Matching graphics and good audio. Gameplay is solid and executed well. I was a bit puzzled by the altar first, killing a lot of people and not knowing if this was the right way. But I managed to get some keys before dying. The map could be a bit smaller, but still a solid entry.

kaeveris 2018-12-03 20:25

I really like the graphics and style of the game, the idea of top-down dungeon crawler was brilliant and well-done, the game is actually quite addictive! The music and sounds help with mood of the game. The map is really big and it made me loose track where I am :)

kunonooni 2018-12-03 21:45

You totally earn an 'A' for effort! I'm not going to beat a dead horse as others have already pointed out the parts that need improvement. What I will say is that I enjoyed playing the game. I felt the music set the mood, and I understood what needed to be done. The graphics were clean and sharp, and the mechanics felt good. Player movement took a bit to get used to as the sprite moves in the direction you push and not the way it is facing. In the end all that matters is that you finished a game and you've learned from your mistakes.

rohezal 2018-12-03 22:53

Got to the blue key. Nice voice overs :). I did not sacrifice more than 40 people. Just want to save the village. Taking more damage seems to be the better path than taking more life. Maybe increase the health bonus to 5 per sacrified villager?

erebus 2018-12-04 01:56

Thanks for bringing it by the stream as always! I made most of my comments on stream, but I'm glad you got a good learning experience out of building this one.

wie 2018-12-04 15:54

This is fun to play, but sometimes it gets a bit tedious. Graphics and music is really good though!

mrwillowb 2018-12-05 14:25

Lovely graphics and fun gameplay. I really enjoyed this game awesome

jandourek 2018-12-06 19:24

Not bad. Graphics and audio were nice, but I feel like the hurt and hit sound effects were pretty loud compared to the rest of the audio. Otherwise it's pretty good!

elysiagriffin 2018-12-18 19:43
