Didn't see any links on this one ._.

eric-smith 2018-12-03 23:56

@adrien-dittrick It's ready!

Lots to say about this game! The graphic style is amazing! The gameplay is really cool, as you set out to tame each flame with the units. Voice overs were pretty awesome and enjoyed hearing each unit respond with phrases as you moved them around. I thought the movement scheme for each unit was well thought out, and pretty cool! Buildings are nice! Music is really good and matched the urgency of needing to put out the fires. Overall, this game scores a 10/10 in my book.

Very interesting concept, fighting wildfires definitely contain the hectic and overwhelming feeling of david vs goliath. Some comments:

Good - Love the tile-based design, evokes the feeling of strategy game - Directional sound is great

Could be improved - It's not immediately clear that what the different individual units do, or how their actions affect the fire - The teleport mechanic kinda invalidates the tile-based strategy game design, also it makes the fires too random and its hard to form a strategy to combat it.

Recommendations - You should lean in towards the tile based strategy design. Make it turn based, and perhaps have a main fire station that generates units every N turns. (maybe collect resources to build more) - have units of strategical importance: One of the main tools of fighting wildfires is cutting down the vegetation to create a dead zone of no fuel - Maybe have different units try to evacuate citizens as well

eric-smith 2018-12-04 06:14

@kambing Thanks for the review! I wanted it to be real-time and not turn based. The axe men remove foliage to create fire breaks (dead zones), the hose guys dowse fire and prevent it from spreading, the engine provides water to the hose guys. The heli does the same as the hose guys but in a large radius and with more effectiveness. The police cars were added to do the whole evacuation thing but I thought that managing that PLUS trying to battle fires was too hard to play. So I changed it to a fire chief unit that gives the units effectiveness bonus for being in range. Had I more time I would have added a description or tooltip for each unit to describe its job.

artur-hawkwing 2018-12-04 07:03

Very nice game, and very well polished!

I really loved the music, it was very well written. Similarly, I thought the sound effects fit very well (although the fire truck sound did seem a bit off to me).

I would say that the one thing I would suggest would be to add in different types of fires and different types of fire-fighters (beyond what you have). It seemed a bit repetitive, though still quite fun.

Overall, this is an amazing entry. Especially when you include the graphics and the smoothness of the gameplay—I did not notice any major bugs at all.

Great job!

Fun game! Very interesting theme diferent than the usual fantasy. I felt that some form of tutorial or explanation was need to enjoy the game 100% tho.

By the way feel free to try my game, feedback is always apreciated!

kszaku 2018-12-04 20:18

Good usage of theme. Funnily enough, it's the first game (in this jam) where player has to save people, rather than try to kill them :) I also liked the artstyle, although gameplay is rough around the edges, and sometimes I wasn't really sure why my units are getting grilled. Good job :)

eric-smith 2018-12-04 20:28

@kszaku Thanks for the feedback! If your units are in a fire tile, they run the risk of getting trapped and destroyed.

craftlord 2018-12-04 21:37

Nice game! I enjoyed playing it.

kroute 2018-12-04 21:48

That's an interesting and innovative idea you got there. Also the graphics are really clean and precise.

Maybe you should add animations to the units because one cannot really know if they are doing something or just waiting for the fire to toast them, which can be a little bit frustrating! Good job.

eric-smith 2018-12-04 21:51

@kroute Thanks for the feedback! The small dot on each unit indicates their current task. White=Idle, Green=Moving, Blue=Working.

eldogg 2018-12-04 21:52

Great graphics and implementation of RTS controls (zoom and pan).

I think a little bit of tutorial text would help (maybe on this page or in game). Just to make it clearer what to do.

The audio makes the gameplay exciting, with the action music and voice work.

Good job!

eddie-li 2018-12-04 22:41

Nice game! Graphics and audio were nice but a tutorial would've definitely been appreciated.

antoine-vion 2018-12-04 23:25

Nice job, a little feeling of "age of empire" ^^ Great job, i like even if it's not very clear in the begin ! WELL PLAYED

probe2 2018-12-05 00:16

I like this kind of strategy!

mac-dragoness 2018-12-05 00:18

This is game is really good! I had a lot of fun time playing game, although adding some animation for the firefighter would have helped the game further as at first I have no idea what am I doing...

ursagames 2018-12-05 05:28

Your game was played on my stream ( twitch.tv/ursagames ) for the first day of Ludum Dare streams - you can find the timestamp of your game here: https://goo.gl/N2rkr8

sargonius 2018-12-05 05:58

A little bit slow and hard to control, but overall is very good! I enjoyed it, thanks!

jan5366x 2018-12-05 17:36

Nice game concept!

boopsgames 2018-12-05 17:42

This is pretty impressive! Quality game!

Though, it ran slow and it was a lot of instructions to internalize at first and the text is really tiny.

jeu-embouteillage 2018-12-05 17:45

Really great game ! I had a lot of fun playing it, trying to cut trees to prevent fire to spread, deploying all my units to stop the fire.

The problem is that I think that the helitanker is overpowered. When a fire breaks out, I can just send the Helitanker home and respawn it at the right place and put the fire out before it even had a chance to spread.

Anyway, I really had a lot of fun playing this. Congratulations !

antt5053 2018-12-05 17:59

Nice game was fun following you and Ryan doing the game. Sounds effect and mechnics are great. Really cool entry.

eric-smith 2018-12-05 18:24

@antt5053 Thanks! It was fun having you there. Just rated your game. :v:

skettynmeebs 2018-12-05 19:49

I had a great deal of fun with this, good job! I cant think of any real improvements and I didnt see any bugs :)

kobrar 2018-12-06 03:22

I absolutely love the idea for this game. After playing this for a while it doesn't seem to go anywhere ultimately, but the premise of a tactical firefighting game is fantastic and underused. I'd definitely want you to develop this idea more :)

garagones 2018-12-10 07:52

Interesting videogame, really'd like to play more

twisted-hive 2018-12-10 23:55

well done! it was a bit of a struggle to get into. but once i got the hang of it, it was rather good, I partially like that the units need to stay near the firetruck for water. But it is really annoying if your only character cant reach the fire. furthermore i though i would keep the reinforcements however they kept disappearing each round. anyhow impressive work! BTW if you burn your firetruck you wont be able to send your people home

slimothyj 2018-12-11 06:53

Hi! The game plays well and is definitely my kind of game. It was tense and fit the theme well. However, it took me a little while to get working. This is likely the a fault of unity but when I tried playing in chrome I had this issue https://imgur.com/a/DlxJ28K . Again, this is likely a fault with unity or chrome because I sometimes have this issue with webbuilds. Perhaps include a download link as well? Still enjoyed though :)

eric-smith 2018-12-11 23:25

@rytannic Hmm... that's a weird one. Glad you liked the game!

bificommander 2018-12-12 20:14

This is a very ambitious title with a great concept. I like the look, the sizable map, and the mechanical ideas. What the game still lacks is polish and balancing. I started the game bankrupt because there were no fires in the first two years, and I was dinged 500 bucks upkeep cost regardless. Then I got dinged for the sizable body counts of my house fires, but all the casualties happen before my truck and car even got to the left edge of the map. And with the water-radius of the engine being small, forest fires are hard to deal with. Having the response team clear what you hope the next spreading locations of the fire (which sometimes jump over an empty hex, and sometimes don't) and then twiddling your thumbs as the blaze burns itself out was all I could do. I found selecting and moving units around also a bit finicky. I often found myself moving the wrong unit because I'd selected the wrong unit and didn't know. The models not ending their move on the center of the hex didn't help with that. In short, I really like the puzzle concept of this game, but there's currently a bit too many random and/or unclear mechanics that leave me feeling that my failures are beyond my control.

eric-smith 2018-12-12 23:27

Thanks for the review @bificommander! Yea I know there are still some balancing issues. The game is however only 6 days old. :) The logic that determines when A fire should break out needs to be refactored a bit. And I'm not sure how to keep the logic and still not have you go into the hole right off the bat. One method could be through scenarios and challenges I'm thinking. I too feel that the hose radius is too small and plan on widening it. Fire is of course, unpredictable and it will jump from time to time. As for waiting for a fire to burn out, yea I know, and it was suggested having a time scale control to zoom through that. Or if you have some response companies you can have them put them out to earn extra cash. Wrongful death claims now only occur when a civilian dies in a fire and there IS a chief nearby.

tomfurrier 2018-12-14 13:06

Nice job! It's very detailed, with interesting mechanics and matching sound effects!

bificommander 2018-12-14 14:54

@eric-smith A possible, and easy fix for the no-fires problem: Give a 500 dollar bonus for keeping the town fire free for a year. That cancels out the 500 dollar upkeep. A speed-up option would indeed be a good way to get rid of the wait for an isolated blaze to burn itself out.

hare-software 2018-12-30 08:16

This has to be the best game about putting out forest fires. There is a lot of detail and a lot of different mechanics to keep in mind to play this well. The few issues in game play that I encountered only make sense for a game of this scope with the time frame it was built in. Graphics are very pretty, each unit is unique and mechanics are easy to understand after playing for just a few minutes. Well done guys, hope this is not the end for this project!
