The game is pretty impressive, I haven't seen anyone else submit a game created for such an old computer and that gives it a few points in innovation.

The game stuck to the theme pretty well, it combines 2 genres that seem fairly unrelated.

Graphics are okay, but this was made for the Commodore 64 so I think the game deserves some credit there.

Humor and mood aren't really here. The game's two genres aren't exactly funny (one is stressful and the other one is edutainment most of the time) and I can't say the game set up a good atmosphere for me.

The game isn't bad but I do have a few issues with it, one of which is the music.

Is there anyway to make the music not stop and start from the beginning of the song when you die? It kind of gives me a headache when it keeps looping again and again, and it doesn't help that the game is pretty damn hard.

Not to say it shouldn't be hard, I think the game could be pretty fun because of the difficulty curve.

But, the music is again making things a bit tricky. Could you tone down the intensity of the music? The original Flappy Bird had no music which allowed people to focus on the distinct sound effects for flapping, dying, and moving through pipes.

The music in this game is rather distracting, a calmer, slower track would probably work better. If possible, a few sound effects would really sell it. Make sure they're not annoyingly loud though.

The fun and overall would probably be a 3 if it wasn't for all the issues with audio I had. Mood would probably go up a bit too.

2.5/5 - Would play again with sound turned off.

Edit:

3/5 - Would play again with sound turned on.

@Jacoder23 thanks a lot for your feedback. If I would have had more time, I would have definitely worked on the audio. For now I can only fix the bug with the music restart, beyond that I cannot make any changes until the compo voting is done. I might make a post compo version later.

jorbits 2018-04-23 15:36

The idea is great. But I had problems finding the right typing speed. I was always typing too fast, maybe because of the music.

habeeb-mohammed 2018-04-23 15:36

Honestly, the novelty of this game should be awarded something. Commodore 64!? thats amazing. This is definitely the most frustrating game of LD41 that I've seen so far. But I love it! well done!

niksg 2018-04-23 15:39

I really like this one, usually typing games are all about speed an accuracy so having the pace be something externally determined was really interesting and new! also very impressive style. good game!

benbusby 2018-04-23 15:53

Wow, I really enjoy this game a lot. It almost has a sort of Bennett Foddy-ish feel in my opinion (which is a good thing), and I really liked the old school look and sound. Although I will say that I wish there were new songs each time the levels looped and got faster. Seems like that would be a good way to build on the soundtrack. I also had no clue who mxyzptlk was until this, but that was fun to type. Overall though I thought this was awesome, great combo of genres, great retro visuals and gameplay, and excellent execution.

geraldfingburke 2018-04-23 15:59

I'm going to be honest and say that I sucked at Flappy Bird. I also suck at this. But I do think what you did with it was clever and the game itself was technically executed very well. I want to say that I don't like the seemingly random level of responsiveness when typing, but I don't know if that's the game or just me. I like what you did, though, and it is good, just not my cup of tea.

johnr0 2018-04-23 16:07

I was playing this game continuously until I made it, and I could not expect it when I first saw the screenshot of the game... I think the combination of flappy bird and typing enforced some kind of unfamiliar rhythm of typing, and I felt kind of fun from it. That strange feeling made me more engaging... Thank you for giving me a fresh experience!

gastricsparrow 2018-04-23 16:13

It's really hard, but that fits since it's half Flappy Bird. The innovation is clear, you made me realize the possibilities of using typing as a real control scheme. It's a lovely experience all around, I got to level 4!

duck-games 2018-04-23 16:13

The game was challenging. I couldn't really play it that well because it was so challenging. The game is a cool concept, but it was a hard job to execute well. It was hard to play because you had to type slowly d fastly. But not too slow, and not too fast. It was a good game and I enjoyed playing it but the mechanics could e a bit better. For example make it so that type a letter is like tapping the screen instead of having to continuously type letters and stat=rt and stop typing to win. But remember this is all from me plying the start of the game so I might not have a good perspective.

king-kujito 2018-04-23 16:51

This was very hard but I found it enjoyable for a short while. The music killed the experience for me though.

sndr 2018-04-23 17:15

Super hard but hey, fun and with a nice twist on the Flappy mechanics! :) I really liked the overall retro feel. Props to you for doing it for the Commodore 64!

seaham 2018-04-23 17:27

Unfortunately I think the game broke for me. typing didnt' really do anything and after 30 sec the game froze. I like the concept though.

frodewin 2018-04-23 18:26

@SeaHam did you try the web version? It might run better locally, but for this you need to get the C64 VICE emulator. This is probably too much effort for playing my game, but on the other end it enables to play a lot of good old games :-)

nilstastic 2018-04-23 19:10

It seems that I only have to typing speeds, too slow and too fast. Still, I really enjoyed the game and the music was nice. Good work!

chris-magnuson 2018-04-23 19:44

Super cool! This game is pretty hard I either type too slow or too fast :)

valden 2018-04-23 19:54

That game is pretty hard, but it's always amazing to see games made for an unusual target in jams !

derek-volker 2018-04-23 20:01

Find it really hard. Could not pass of the first pipe. :(

init-py 2018-04-24 01:06

This was fun, if a bit hard. Part of the hardness came from the fact that the C64 emulator lags a lot on my PC. Nevertheless, this is a fun game with a creative idea.

init-py 2018-04-24 01:07

"This game combines the fun of a learning game with the usefulness of a casual game." Don't you mean the other way around? Or is that on purpose?

frodewin 2018-04-24 05:32

@__init__.py That was meant on purpose :-) , thanks for your feedback and playing the game!

themonsterfromthedeep 2018-04-24 16:10

It's pretty cool to see a game written for a retro computer. The game itself was challenging, as others have said, but I believe that the challenge is mostly deserved, given that it's a Flappy Bird game. The one gripe I have is with the spaces--I got tripped up quite a few times by needing to type spaces, which I think is partially because they aren't indicated very well. However, I imagine that it might just be hard, psychologically, to switch from typing letters to typing spaces and back.

laguna 2018-04-24 16:43

Nice game! I really like the idea and it fits the theme quite well. Graphics are awesome and you nailed the style of old comodore games. When I loaded the site first I had some issues that my keystrokes were not recognized, but when i refreshed the page everything worked fine. Sound is very nice and adds to the mood.

Regarding gameplay I have to admit that I suck at playing flappy bird. Adding the typing it was really hard for me to get past the second pipe. But that is probably just me and a "casual" flappy game has tu be hard af, so you did everything right there! ;) Great game overall!

silent-tower-games 2018-04-24 18:00

I'm impressed that you made a Commodore game and uploaded an emulator for us to play. That's really cool!

I had the same issue as the user above, where I needed to refresh to make my keystrokes register properly, but that's not a big deal.

The difficulty was too high for me to get very far, but I really liked what I played.

firesong-bard 2018-04-25 21:14

There's a lot I could get into, but I'm going to highlight the game play Because holy crap I just sunk half an hour into this game and would have kept playing if I didn't have things I had to get done. I'm a big fan of typing games (a really werid thing to be into, I know), and I adore the way this game forces you to re-think how to play. It doesn't care about accuracy or speed, the gameplay is focused completely on rhythm. Combinging typing game with flappy bird totally transformed the two. Major props on Theme here. Thank you for posting a play in browser link. I might have overlooked this gem if I had to get an emulator downloaded and running. Great job!

sebastianscaini 2018-04-27 16:48

How the heck did you make a C64 build!?

frodewin 2018-04-27 21:33

It's mostly the tools, I made some poorly written code in assembler (rasterline interrupt) and C (game code), compiled with cc-65, made music with goattracker, packed everything together with exomizer, put that into a webversion of VICE - if these tools would have been available in the 80ies we could have had 1 hour game jams with the C64. What I find amazing is that the hardware from that era is still good for some games today.

robber 2018-04-29 14:09

WOW!...wish i had this on the c64 back in the day..i would be better at typing..the genre combo is perfect. love the graphics..awesome chiptune..superhard! but excellent!

hexagore 2018-04-29 18:13

This is genuinely astonishing to me. I assume you're already pretty comfortable coding for the C64, but even so I find this amazing, wouldn't even know where to begin. Nice one!!

2018-05-04 12:02

Thank you for making a C64 game! More C64 games are definitely needed! I'll give you a mention in my C64 blog at Indie Retro News today

yukey0 2018-05-06 13:02

It was a quite hard, The length from top to bottom of the screen was not that big, so I lost pretty fast, lol at the first hurdle, while trying several times. ^^;

jonathan-whiting 2018-05-06 15:50

I love really love this, simple but very devious concept, good execution. It's cool that it's a C64 game too, but I'd like it as much if it wasn't.

ekkoekko 2018-05-08 10:36

WTF i want to throw my PC!!!!! This game is the king of all Rage Games I don't to play it again, I dont want to destroy ng pc. By the way good job!! Its 5 out of 5.
