A really interesting spin on a classic game.

@L I'm not quite sure yet (I have no way to test this), but from what I've found the error your getting is associated with an out of date version of java. If you could update to version 7 / are already there I'd like to know

you can fix that error by recomiling against java 1.6

I also can't unrar on GNU/Linux, since rar is a proprietary file archiver and I'd rather not install proprietary software.
The idea turned out to be much more interesting than I expected! Was interesting choosing between the options that I thought would help me get points faster. The simple graphical style is nice - could really have done with a simple bouncing sound from bxfr or something. When I added the blocks, the game pace slowed a lot because of the huge number of points I had to earn - turned me off a bit :(
The bouncing was a bit odd, sometimes the ball reversed direction instead of being reflected, and sometime got stuck in paddles or walls and bounced along until off screen.
Like it!

Sorry cant play it either. Based on the comments above it is because of the java version. Someone suggested reposting a recompiled version. I think that is allowed within the rules, so maybe? I am curious about your game

@Anybody who couldn't play this on mac or Linux
OK, I've recompiled against java 1.6 (links are now updated for all platforms)
@munchor
Didn't even think of that, now compressed with 7zip.

@Ragzouken
Thanks, I ran out of time before I managed to balance the bricks at all, If I ever do a "post-LD" revision that'll probably be the first thing I do.
The game really evolves in difficulty the more you play it!

I like the main idea and it's fun but I think it could do with some music and some colors.
I really liked the idea of playing as the right and left paddle, and as the right and bottom paddle. Those stages were fun. But I think the game needed a little more direction. I think it would have been cool to have a set pattern of evolutions that you go through every time and you try to get a high score, rather than the game just throwing random evolutions at you, as far as I can tell. But the game works as-is and didn't have too many bugs. Good job!

Kinda reminds me of BIT.TRIP:BEAT! (I love that game)
I like the idea of mutations dna-like on the game. Those double paddles are really challenging! A very nice game, fitted perfectly with the theme but I missed some chirp sounds.
Good idea, but the pace is just way too slow. This game would be great if you could get it to flow smoother and if you added more gameplay types.
Pacing does need some work as QualityAssurance mentioned, it is too slow. It was fun for a while, but I quickly got tired of the mechanic. With some more features it might be more interesting, or maybe 2 players? That would be really intriguing with all these odd paddle configurations. It could be done in head to head or survival modes.

@Rex Peppers
What OS are you using? (if windows) have you tried the version labeled 1.6?

The more you play it, the difficult it gets, that's for sure!
I had a bug: the ball became trapped within one of my pads and I got all the points I needed for the next evolution for free...
Nice retro game, as hard as needed.
At the beginning it is strange to use the menu just with the keyboard and play the game with the mouse, but that does not matter.
I quite liked the mutations you could make - ultimately the game proved to become fiendishly difficult yet you could rack up score in no time. On the note of racking up score, the player can catch the ball inside of the paddle, essentially causing them to win the round as it bounces back and forth. Still, well done! :)
I like the minimalistic graphics but the game had some glitches.
The starting idea is neat but evolution can make the game easier or more difficult but also longer. It make it a bit chaotique in my opinion. And it really need sounds, at least the classical pong beep :)

Yay Feedback!
I'm taking all this to heart, I already have a significantly updated version of DPVE on my PC right now, and I'll post it sometime in the future in the LD journal, I just don't want it tainting anyone's opinion of my entry.
Great idea!
Probably should have went with a .zip file.
Just a thought though.

Winrar should have no trouble opening the 7zip files.

I liked it :) But it took me ages to complete the breakout style level - with the motivation of finding out how the gameplay would evolve after that, only to find it was just another breakout level with either one less paddle or more score :) Breakout is fun though :)
I like the concept. I kept getting the ball stuck in the paddle and winning really quickly though

It doesn't work on any system where file names are case-sensitive.
