LD42 — Running out of space

Eventful Horizon by bitdecay 2018-08-19T09:48:53Z

This game shows the power of team work! Cool music, polished graphics (i loved the absorbing effect of the black hole), original and well made gameplay and this incredible rotoscoped intro. So many things we're not used to see all-together in a jam game because of the time constraint. But you managed to do all that because you were 5, and i suppose you were really well organized to divide this huge amount of work.

The only thing i regret is an option to skip the tutorial and the black hole cutscene. Despite the fact these are really cool, i had the feeling i almost spent more time reapeating them than playing, so i didn't finish your game :-(

Rockdown by illugion 2018-08-29T20:06:35Z

I almost reached the end, but then gave up x)

Cool and challenging game! I suppose the best way to win is to deal with the blocks, wisely balancing between height (in order to stay alive) and length (in order to keep space and avoid getting stuck). I discovered later there was a wall jump ability, but didn't really manage to use it efficiently, thought it saved me sometimes.

Frosty Fort Fight - [FFF] by AwesomeAlliterationAlliance 2018-08-29T21:24:19Z

Woah! I absolutely loved this one! Seriously, i'll keep it to play with friends!

First of all the sounds of the title screen made me laugh, and the 3D low-poly art is awesome (the only bad point about the graphics are the colours, i think they're kind of drab). Then this bluesy/jazzy music is very cool! It really sounds like we're in a party-game and we're going to have fun playing with friends!

As for the gameplay, i had to take a little time to get comfortable with the controls, but it's very fun once we've got it! Once again, i only have one negative point to bring out : i find it a bit hard to aim the enemy with snowballs. I often miss my target, but maybe i'm just bad at this.

We can elaborate different strategies, building a lot of forts or building less but upgrading them. This give the possibility to change our behaviour in order to take the opponent by surprise (for example by suddenly attacking the forts or by upgrading one), which make the game even more interesting to play with friends. I think each player will influence with his actions the way his opponent will react, and i like this relation the game put the players into. (In fact i only played with the IA so this is only how i imagine it, but i'll show the game to some friends as soon as i have the occasion)

I also praise the great amount of levels! It's a simple change but bring a lot of variation to the game! Finally your game really stick to the theme, since the forts are occupying space and we have to destroy little by little the arena in order to build them.

The world is lava! by LaughingGrimReaperGames 2018-08-15T20:51:34Z

Well, it's clear you respected the "running" part of the theme, but as for the "out of space" part, i'm not shure i'm getting it. Oh, and i gave you a good mark in "humor" for the title of your game, which is, i suppose, a reference to this stupid game where you have to say "The floor is lava!"

Otherwise that's a fine and simple 3D platformer, but why did you disperse so much the control on the keyboard? It would have been better to clic in order to run, so we could run, jump, move the character and move the camera at the same time (instead i have to run and jump with my left hand and move with the arrows with my right hand then stop, move the camera with the mouse and go)

You Shoot Walls by Kodiqi 2018-08-15T17:14:12Z

Woah! Really impressed by this one! You know what? I played the HTML version but as my screen is a bit little, i couldn't see the entire action of the game on it, so i sometimes had to scroll up or down in order to see my objective. I know this is involuntary, but this make your game fits even more to the theme, since my screen kind of ran out of space lol! Apart of this, graphics are simple but cool and the idea is PERFECT for that theme. My strategy is to shoot enemies when they're near in order to generate little walls, so i have to take risks.

I'm repeating myself but i really love the idea of your game, very original!

No One's Land by tenshi42 2018-08-15T16:53:44Z

Too bad i wasn't with my friends when i tested it, I had to play with Timmy (but i guess programming an AI is hard, and the game in itself is already wonderful for the little time you spent on it). I can see the link with the theme even if i think you only concentrated on the notion of "space" and kinf of left out the "running out" part. But i'm being harsh, graphics are really good (the style made me think of a friend of mine, i'll show him your game someday), gameplay works really well and you made the effort to put some music.

(After A) PARTY SIMULATOR 2018 by Autumnotopia 2018-08-15T16:36:37Z

Was really fun but so shooort! I wanted more puzzles! You game really stick with the theme (btw I had a quite similar idea for this jam with a table at a party but didn't make it). I had to play the post jam version to get it complete, but the idea is cool. However I think you could have done way better graphics. Using photos could have been an easy and cool solution. It could have made the puzzles clearer and given a better mood to your game (I think it would fit perfectly with the noises you used for the sounds of the game)

A Fight on the Waves by MarkoPoloDev 2018-08-15T20:31:29Z

I like this dashing/teleporting ability you gave to the character, i find it pretty badass and, though i'ts very simple, very satisfying to use. I can easily imagine this game being a boss battle of a bigger entire game (and well, i think a jam game is very good when it manages to do this, to make us want a bigger and better game with the same concept). The way the music is adapting to the action is also pretty nice

Also, i didn't immediatly understood the link with the theme, but it comes from these little islands and the dashing ability. We have to handle the character's space without getting hit by the boss or by the wall

Spaced Out by Roidz 2018-08-18T14:23:24Z

wow! This game is so hard, but it's cause i'm bad at controlling this ship x) That's a really cool game!

Piramid Rampage by KaueSilva 2018-08-29T20:42:50Z

Awesome graphics and simple but cool music! As for the gameplay, it looks like a Megaman X : the character is able to dash, to "slide" on the walls and to wall-jump. Even the guitar sound of the music reminded me Megaman X. Is it voluntary?

Other similarity with Megaman X, it's very hard (but sometimes more because of the controls than the level design. Yet, i can understand all the character's ability may be hard to handle in only 3 days). I thought some trap were kind of unfair, especially the one with the spikes at the end of a big hole, but it's something we could find in a Megaman game, so it's all right.

Finally i suppose the link with the theme is the spiked seiling going down, but i saw it only once in the game. Also, a plateformer isn't really innovative.

Now that i reread my review i realize it's kind of harsh, so i want to repeat graphics and animations are really awesome, they are the strong point of the game! You also made the effort to make a neat intro, which is considerable. As for the music, i liked the riff playing during the levels, it's efficient and gives an urgency mood which well correspond to the situation the character is in.

Cubi Cat ' s Start Menu by dinamite 2018-08-19T10:15:04Z

Okay, is it a troll or is there a real way to get past Cubi Cat start menu? Damn, I've never been good at puzzles, I want to know! x)

'Til the End of Space by Shertigan 2018-08-15T18:31:35Z

@matank : Oh my! I downloaded the Windows English version to test and it seems you're right, i'm so sorry about that! I changed the link, there should now have a traduction in the windows version of the game. But as @stopa says, there are some lines that remained untranslated, i don't know why... I'll try to correct that as fast as possible, as well as correcting some spelling errors that are present in the French script

@wetbox and @zozol : i tagged you so you can play our game in English, thank you!

Thank you all for the feedbacks! I wouldn't have noticed these traduction errors without you!

'Til the End of Space by Shertigan 2018-08-16T15:09:58Z

Okay! The donwload links now lead to a Itch.io page with (i hope) the definitive jam version of the game! Every sentences are traduced as they should be and spelling-mistakes in the script have been corrected. Sorry for those troubles you've met with the traduction and thanks again for reporting them.

Now only sound is missing. Maybe in a post-jam version?

Never run out of SPACE: a ZIP folders journey by Swini 2018-08-15T16:13:25Z

I enjoyed playing this game, even if the text was too long (maybe there should have a way to skip it, or it could appear only the first time you enter a level) and didn't really see the link with the theme

Pyramidion by Matank 2018-08-19T09:19:02Z

A cool game! Choosing an egyptian ambience was a very original idea for this theme, and you did it very well with the pyramid mechanic.

However i found the hardest rooms were the biggest one (i played through every mode. In fact the hardest room for me was the second of normal mode, the one with two snakes) and i was surprised to see the more i advanced in the pyramid, the easier it was (while i expected the contrary, i thought little rooms were going to be very hard). But shure, it shouldn't have been evident to make challenge with those snakes ennemies in these little rooms, without making levels impossibly hard. Maybe a solution would have been to include littler ennemies in those rooms (maybe some insects? A beetle would fit in the egyptian theme), but maybe i'm asking too much. After all you only had 3 days to make this game!

Apart of this, you did a good job! Graphics are cool (your snakes make me think about shrimps, which is fun XD) and AI, even if they are really simple, are challenging : I particularly liked this level in hard mode with the bird and the snake moving together from one side of the room to another, but their moves are desyncronizing little by little and we have to deal with it (here, you managed to include challenge in a little room, despite what i said earlier).
