LD46 — Keep it alive

don't dead it by drprettypatty 2020-05-07T07:09:52Z

So!!!! Cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Augh!

What a resounding success on every front it went for. Execution of the concept is basically perfect. The art style is the biggest draw of course, but then the gameplay loop is so solid I couldn't Not see my fella through to its final growth stage.

EDIT: i spent about 20 minutes feeding it and waiting for another evolution past its "adult form"... oops xD I guess that speaks to how compelling I found the design!!

Lots of love for this submission. Great work ^^

Wreckless Survivor by Danilo Bezerra 2020-05-03T22:05:05Z

I enjoyed a lot of things about this game!! The music was particularly good - the game theme and ending theme were both probably the best tracks I've heard all jam. The concept and the levels are good, I always like the idea of making decisions that are somehow trade-offs, and this game has an excellent "meaningful decisions per second" rate. I *also* like the mechanic of life carrying over between levels (should I grab points now, or save my life for a more lucrative stage I know is coming later?)

I ended with a score of 800, which I'm pretty proud of ^^

Great submission, especially the music!!!

Affordable Pet Care by domrein 2020-05-07T05:49:13Z

NICE!! Wicked-good movement and simple controls. Awesome, awesome job realizing the concept, this has a particularly high "fun" factor.

As people already pointed out, the text overlaps with itself and it is sometimes "impossible" to complete the requests... or frustrating in an unintended way, at least. Still possible.

The music didn't loop for me, not sure if it's a bug on my end or what. I liked what I heard of the music!!

I'd also like to point out the VERY good comedy of the screen-shake on failure?? IDK why but the tonal contrast (same with the sudden cut to black screen on death) got a laugh out of me.

One more time, the movement and how well it controls is SO GOOD for a gamejam game!! Great work on mastering that!

MMO Healer Simulator 2020 by EmiCB 2020-05-07T06:39:16Z

SO good. very funny, very effective - i'm shocked I haven't played more games as a healer, it's my favourite role in MMOs and it can be so engaging and fleshed-out as a game concept!!

This is one of my favourite entries in the jam for being an effectively realized, under-explored game concept. I had an unreasonable amount of fun. I guess the "healer gene" runs deep.

I played for 5-6 minutes - is there a final boss or "win condition" that I didn't stick around long enough to see?

Planet Doom by NNNIKKI 2020-05-07T05:37:32Z

Wow!! One of the most impressive full-package compo games I've seen yet. Gameplay, music, and graphics all have a very impressive level of polish.

Mechanics were overall very well thought-out, but not having any obvious way to avoid enemies in a pinch (no dodges, no attacks, no jump) was... unexpected. If the goal was more to plan ahead and path away from enemies, one might expect that they'd move slower, or that the screen would stay zoomed out further, or something to accentuate the "strategy" of path planning. If that was a design goal, that could have been emphasized or realized better.

Kudos once again for the polish on the finished product.

Mother Hen by beepyeah 2020-04-28T02:21:48Z

Holy smokes, this was fun. It took me about 30 seconds of messing around to figure out the game goal, but once I got it, the absolute joy of sitting on the nest and hearing the jingle... WOW!!! I didn't finish the level with the #-shaped flames (was this the final level?) because frustration was mounting a bit, but what a weird rush of an experience up to that point. Kinda weirdly unforgettable.

This entry has such a spectacular understanding of FUN, and I have massive admiration for such a great focus on game feel and player satisfaction. Kudos!!

Crossroads by gamebuilder 2020-04-28T02:55:45Z

Augh, I LOVED the music. Twin Peaks vibes. The graphical style (mix of older pixel-y environments + hand-drawn assets) really appeals to me and contributes to the atmosphere.

It's a little funny that you "pick up" the lake at the same time as the ghost girl... intentional, or not quite? Haha.

Thanks for making + submitting!!

File Survival by Probe31 2020-05-02T19:42:12Z

omg... what a thrill. "OS simulator" is a game genre that is very close to my heart, and to have such a fast-paced "action"-y take on it is very refreshing and stimulating.

I'm afraid I had a hard time clicking around accurately, mostly just because the screen size was so small. I switched from trackpad to mouse and had a slightly easier time of it; then I also tried playing this on an aperture-grille CRT from 1999 at 640x480 and had an even better experience with the graphics :D 95411481_819934115169261_3381482418484543488_n.jpg

(As I'm writing this comment, I scrolled up and found that there are indeed screen size options... oops!!)

For such a fast-paced game, it also would have been nice if the windows were more responsive.

Awesome submission! Cheers.

LifeShip by ndrw 2020-05-07T05:43:27Z

Caused a truly bizarre CPU load on my computer, for what it is. I think the performance issues are worth investigating. Otherwise a delightful game :D

Ars Pandemonic by leon75 2020-05-03T21:39:55Z

Grand slam of a game. Great music, great concept, great art, great TONE... I also had the thought of "keep it alive" => keep a COMBO alive, super happy to see it realized like this.

Nitpick: some enemy attacks didn't seem to be telegraphed properly with the converging lines (for the amalgamation fiends that spawn early?); there's no way to tell the cooldown on dash/"disperse" abilities; and it would be nice if attack direction changed with movement direction (as in, when i hold C, I'd like to be able to change the the trajectory of my attacks without having to release and re-press C? That's a slightly more intuitive behaviour, at least to me :P)

Flora is chilling by TheShamo 2020-05-07T05:23:31Z

I'm afraid that on my 1366x768 laptop screen, I couldn't click the buttons at the bottom of the screen!! I don't think I have any other monitors at home that I can successfully play the game on ;_;

Looks like a good submission and a solid concept even if I couldn't quite interact with it, haha...

SURVIVOR by Amirreza01 2020-05-02T19:26:54Z

Finished the whole thing. Good submission, keep up the good work!

Save the Sun by JProclaimer 2020-05-03T21:46:11Z

Very easy to understand - I'm very pleasantly impressed at how much is communicated so elegantly and quickly!!

I agree with other commenters that mouse controls + more "mass" on the ship would go a long way to making your actions feel more consistent + impactful. The "bonk" sound effects were honestly hilarious to me.

Awesome first submission!!

Help! I'm Broken! by alessia-ip 2020-04-28T02:47:49Z

Cute! Short and sweet :) Definitely reminds me of the old "escape room" Flash puzzle games.

The rotation was a tiny bit strange-feeling - normally I think one expects that left-right rotation (A and D keys) will be around the axis that's a vertical line top-to-bottom of the screen, rather than the viewer-to-screen line? Hope that makes sense :P

I only had music for the title screen, not sure if that was a bug on my end?

Yeah, once again, short and sweet ^^

Light from a star by munmungames 2020-04-28T02:37:31Z

Awesome awesome concept, and I'm a big fan of the music and art. Like some of the other commenters, I found this game wicked challenging... I think a little bit more lenient tuning of numbers (how fast the bar rises and falls) would be nice, it's a bit hard to sink my teeth into as-is.

However, I'd like to emphasize how GOOD the puzzle design seems, right from level one!! The very first level (3 farmers, one shadow) is EXCELLENT puzzle design, and I got a rush from figuring out how to "cycle" the shadows in a rhythm... it's a bit neat that players can't really "react" to over-heat or over-cold that well, they have to be planning a route, and on-reaction adjustments won't save you if your route is flawed. So, from that perspective, maybe the difficulty level + tuning is pretty much fine?? IDK, haha.

Thanks for making this entry!!

Skeleton Crew by BoltzmannsBud 2020-05-03T21:28:38Z

Nice! The character movement could have used some fine-tuning - for example if you hold S, and then press D, and then release D, your character does not resume moving down (S-direction). I also got stuck on walls occasionally. Thanks for the submission!

Square Loves Circle! by meelo 2020-04-30T03:42:01Z

Cool game! I got through about six or seven levels. Even though the puzzles were well-designed, it was very challenging to execute on the "plan" for each level, and it might take me a half-dozen tries to finish the level even after solving the puzzle. As other commenters suggested, tighter controls would go a long way to curb potential frustrations like that. I also would have liked a better visual indicator to differentiate the semi-solid walls (purple versus blue barriers) - it frequently felt like a "guess" which character could move through which.

I'd like to particularly praise the concept, the EXCELLENT puzzle design (the puzzle-difficulty curve is very appropriate IMO!), and the sound design!! Very nifty submission, I'm glad I got to play it! Cheers ^^

Bubbles Saves Grandma by Caladrius 2020-05-03T21:57:04Z

Hilarious and (obviously intentionally) frustrating; the two elements really go hand-in-hand. I'd also like to compliment the visual and audio appeal and the consistent style. The voice acting also managed to be surprisingly tasteful, considering the "silly" vibe - major kudos to the team for showing such solid restraint in a game that employs humour so heavily!

I'm sure preventing acceleration backwards with S was intentional, but I'm not sure it adds anything. The hampster could plausibly roll backwards (MUCH more plausibly than "jump"!! :P )... I also found some inconsistencies with the jumping, unfortunately - about 15% of the time, the jump just wouldn't happen.

Overall, outstanding entry. I'm very impressed with a lot of the execution here.

Help To Level Up by DaniBoySan 2020-05-07T06:23:08Z

Just a bug report: There were some unusual graphical bugs on enemies when playing at a lower resolution (800x600).

The visuals are by far the highlight of this game!! Outstanding sprite work on characters, enemies, and the environment. Nice submission!

Beat-o-matic by greizgh 2020-05-02T19:49:04Z

they never should have hired me for this pacemaker job :sob:

neat little concept - definitely missing either an audio or visual cue for the rhythm. I think you could have set it up so the heart animation goes along to the needed BPM!

Thanks for submitting!!
