LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Nuclear Arms 8: Navigate the Hate by Logicon211 2021-04-27T22:41:45Z

Surprisingly mechanically challenging, but the satisfaction of shooting a bear in the face is incomparable. Killbane is a great character, and I'm now going to go binge the last 7 nuclear arms games

Search for the Quacken by Xeke-Death 2021-04-27T11:56:35Z

Overall a very well made game, very well polished and focused. I enjoyed your application of the theme, and the gameplay loop of collect in shallow water -> purchase equipment -> go deeper makes for an engaging enough time. I think my main criticism would be that it takes too long, I feel, to get enough money to buy a submersible to go deeper. On a smaller note, I was a bit confused about collecting the black orbs for money, maybe it would be better if they were a more attractive texture. Overall, a solid game

Debate Time by NidzaKornjaca 2021-04-27T15:51:02Z

Great design combined with snappy gameplay! I think the design of the UI and the cards is definitely the strongest point of this game. However, I did get a little bit bored with the main combat after a while. The enemies are a little bit too similar, it would be nice if you could see them playing cards as opposed to just dropping your health. But I did really enjoy the humour in the card's text.

Search and Resque by Hilvon 2021-04-27T11:27:53Z

Very cool game! The digging was pretty fun to play around with, and there's some very nice puzzles with solutions that balance being evident and challenging at the same time. I think, however, the laser mechanic is a bit unnecessary and the buttons for the doors could have simply been buttons. Overall, a very cool concept well executed.

Search and Resque by Hilvon 2021-04-27T11:42:39Z

@hilvon Yes, I really enjoyed the puzzles! It reminded me of some of the best parts of portal 2. I guess I've warmed up to the shoot the button!

Deep in hell by katamary 2021-04-27T16:12:31Z

Probably the best art I've seen yet in the entirety of LD48. The pastel style is great at blending light and shadow for that noir look. The text animations are great as well. The story could use a bit of work, I found the twist to be out of nowhere, but overall a very well put together game

Foundations by cottontshirtz 2021-04-27T22:08:56Z

At first, I wasn't sure if the architecture of the game would send me in a loop, but then I realised how well crafted the game world was for it to have such an intuitive path structure even when everything looks the same. The art style is simple, but not simplistic. The short LOD really enhances the feeling of living in the moment, the past and future dissolving away. Great use of audio static to guide navigation.

Down the Mines and Ghosts by UnidayStudio 2021-04-27T16:29:23Z

Interesting way of scaling up the difficulty, the gameplay mechanics are definitely extremely innovative. I'm not such a pro gamer :( so I could only make it to level 23 before it got too hard for me. I don't really have much to say about how this game could be improved, maybe have new enemy types? But overall, very cool game, and the 3d elements are especially well polished. Everything just works

Sonder (a story) by Noble Robot 2021-04-27T15:41:07Z

I loved this game so much! Environmental storytelling at it's best. You've really succeeded in evoking that feeling of Sonderâ„¢. The art style is I think the best part, the warm browns with fresh green highlights really help make the game feel so intimate. A great look into a part of someone's life that feels very real. And the audio, even if a little bare, helps to make all the memories that much more tangible. Wish it was longer!

20.000 LIGHT YEARS deep in THE SKY by Arivenzys 2021-04-27T16:46:48Z

Amazing idea, the variety of planets really enhances the replay value; I can honestly say that this is the first game of Ludum Dare that made me go "Wow that was amazing, I want to try it again and see what else there is!"

The humour works very well too, the astronaut has a lot of personality (and a great accent). The art is very charming and works so well together. This is definitely one of my top games of LD48

Substrate Mining Co. by Steve Dragon 2021-04-27T11:45:40Z

@hilvon Thanks for the review! We decided to try and go for the story and atmosphere over the gameplay. You're right about the ladder bug, we could have tried adding tighter collision boxes around the ladder to prevent it but decided to leave it in as is to avoid you sinking through the floor.

In terms of the interaction stuff, we actually made several changes to try and improve readability, but unfortunately we didn't have the time to make the text as clean as we wanted.

All in all, I'm glad you enjoyed the story!

Substrate Mining Co. by Steve Dragon 2021-04-27T22:46:34Z

@xeke-death @eugenik @crow-seeds @caiolima Thank you all so much for your kind words!

@hijomo Great that you enjoyed solving the grinder puzzle! Designing it into the narrative was a lot of fun! And yeah, map design is a skill I hope to improve!

@dante2001 Disco Elysium is one of my favourite games ever, I'm honored someone compared something I wrote to it! I'm definitely going to try and check your game out!

@v0idpointer Glad you enjoyed our artstyle, @steve-dragon tweaked the lighting until he felt it was perfect, glad it paid off! The ladders are a bit janky, but we'll just call that a "surprise platforming section" ;)

Burst Vein by Caladrius 2021-04-27T17:19:09Z

I guess I can't be surprised that someone else would have a game about unions in mines, great minds think alike after all! Jokes aside this is an amazing game, the atmosphere is great. My favourite part is how small the player character is in relation to everything, really enjoyed jumping about on the shelves like the tiny goblin you are. It helps to set the mood very effectively. I noticed in the hall leading up to the elevator the lighting with the two torches was a bit messy, but overall the low-poly graphics style was really cool, lo-fi horror is the best. The transition from mystery into horror with the one way elevator was great as well, really cool stuff

Deep molatoes by leggy 2021-04-27T07:48:06Z

Nice game! I found the mechanics of the game very interesting to play around with, it's quite innovative in that sense. I would have appreciated a tutorial of some kind but I understand it's hard to do that in a Jam, and also some sort of goal to work towards, maybe a small trophy once you hit 1000 coins or something. That being said, I enjoyed your game very much!

Deep Below Ground by v0idpointer 2021-04-27T22:57:55Z

I love the idea of an infinite game which still has a compelling backstory. The way the narrative is interwoven is pretty great. The spells are pretty responsive and fun to use, I love games which let you experiment with their systems.

If I had to change one thing, it's that I think you should try and make a version of the game which is playable in the web. I had to download a Java IDE to play the game, but I didn't mind since it was fun!

Depths of Mind by Syliris 2021-04-28T18:01:00Z

Nice art! I enjoyed the humour in the job searching minigame, and the use of tasks appearing and disappearing to show what it's like to deal with depression is pretty clever. I also like the somewhat hopeful ending, very relatable and touching as well

Deep Seeker by DaF 2021-04-27T11:37:33Z

Same as a lot of commenters here, I'm struggling to understand exactly how to play the game. Not sure what I'm supposed to do with "chiral compounds". I think you could improve this by having a guide to what all the programming bits do, as well as maybe some kind of indication about how the cells work and when they are destroyed/alive?

This is a potentially very interesting game unfortunately held back by poor graphic design and bad theming

H.M.S. Rustbucket by PlaskiJakDeska 2021-04-27T15:29:36Z

Very nice co-op game! The gameplay is definitely much improved with a friend coming along! Me and a roommate enjoyed it very much, and the art is super cute and well polished

Rodirroc by Quasarium 2021-04-27T16:56:46Z

A very nice atmosphere, the dense impenetrable fog really adds to the mood. I have to admit I had trouble finding any of the skulls before I eventually found one
