LD52 — Harvest

Harvester Horizons by notime4games 2023-01-27T17:41:54Z

Sorry if I am too harsh, but I think this game Idea could have been implemented better. I do like the graphics, they look good in a low poly way, which I enjoy. But the sounds - they were so annoying. The least you should do is add some background music, and make the engine sound a lot fainter. And I also have a personal beef with games that don't work on their movement system, because it end up ruining the whole experience (and also because I used to write such games): if you don't want to make your controls snappy for the sake of the truck, at least make the unresponsive cooldown to be half of what it is now. Jam games are hard to write, i know, but for the future go for something more polished.

Maybe I'm looking too much into it, but I assume the enemies are supposed to be biblically accurate angels, and, if I'm correct, that's genius. You managed to do some amazing things, and they integrate into the game really well, especially for the jam game. The main menu, for one, is very well polished. On the other hand, most of the mistakes I saw in the game would have been easy to fix, and would help a lot to the mood of the game: firstly, you should make the movement a bit more responsive, and make it clearer whenever you manage to damage an enemy. Edit the loading screen a bit, it's a little off-putting, and also change the in-game UI with something as pretty as your main menu. Finally, on linux at least, the in-game resolution is too small, so you can work on that. This game has a lot of potential, if you plan to continue working on it after the jam.

Harvest : Mars by angry-cyboot 2023-01-21T10:59:17Z

The game is rather hard to play, I feel like you spent a lot of time to add the mechanics and had no time left to polish them. Something very useful would be a tutorial, or at least a way to add new mechanics one by one, instead of showing the player so much information from the beginning. Otherwise, the idea fits pretty well with the theme.

Manshroom Harvest by A.Bond 2023-01-21T11:12:20Z

Loved the game. Although a tutorial would have been useful, I watched the gameplay, and when I finally figured out what the hell to do, it was awesome. I think you did a great job with the animations and overall graphics. But above all, the audio signal that shows you when you are about to harvest a human? That is genius. You have a couple of bug fixes to do, though: most notably, the game crashed after it asked me what was that (I suppose it wasn't a dog).

Five Finger Copper Shopper by Don Fouts 2023-01-26T05:43:06Z

Loved it. This is one of the few games on the list that actually made me think "wow, I would never have come up with this interpretation of the theme". The movement was a bit unpolished, but otherwise, all of the mechanics you added worked really well together, like the way you moved slower with more materials. Overall, great game. The only bug that I encountered is that if you push them vertically, you can push boxes through the floor, so you might want to look into that.

Crophunt by Bugord 2023-01-26T19:19:33Z

Awesome game! Visuals are great, especially the vegetables. In addition, the controls feel unresponsive in just the right way to make the experience of riding a truck feel realistic. I never thought hunting vegetables could feel so satisfying. However, while playing the game, I noticed a few bugs regarding the back of the truck. Most notably, sometimes an enemy would enter inside the collision box, and it would follow you no matter what you did. Also, there are ways it can get stuck, and you can't move anymore. You did a great job with the harvesting mechanic, and it fits the game really well, but I think the game itself would be more fun without the back of the truck

A very nice game, I loved the way you integrated images into an otherwise text-based experience. Overall, If you want to continue building this game, you should try to make it a little more balanced, but that is something normal for a jam game.

Hedgehog Tree by Alexascher 2023-01-12T00:30:11Z

I really liked the game, especially how you managed to incorporate all game mechanics in the overall mood. Every time a new mechanic appeared, like the wind or the crows, the way it interacts with the player feels natural, so you really begin to feel part of that world.

Unalived by TheJonu 2023-01-23T01:09:13Z

So the idea is not really innovative, but to be honest I liked it, especially since my own submission to the jam is really similar to this. Good game overall; however I need to point out that the movement feels ackward. My fix would be to increase sideways speed, and make the jump feel sharper (when going upwards go slower than when going back down). It would be best for you to playtest and see what works out. In addition, it would help a lot if you would be able to change your direction mid-dash. The combat was neat, so it's a waste if movement feels unresponsive.

Soul's Path by Gabriel Chan 2023-01-26T05:31:28Z

Lovely game, extremely well polished. The enviroment art creates a very immersive mood, and I also loved the squirrel animations. The only issue I had was that it was sometimes hard to predict whether a certain jump would kill me or not, and I had to restart a few levels fo this reason, so maybe you could find a way to warn the player before the actual jump.

Necromancer's Garden by animawish 2023-01-26T20:21:45Z

I read the description and the game idea sounded interesting, but, sadly, the linux version does not work for me.

Reaper by ImmanentDeath 2023-01-26T20:44:56Z

Very fun and polished game, feels like those old arcade games in a few ways. Firstly, the artstyle and sound effects fit very well together. And secondly, the jam version is brutally hard :)). I can definetly relate to that, since I also end up sometimes with games nobody else can play due to lack of playtesting. If you want to continue working on it, it would be nice to have more types of enemies, or a guide to what each power up does.

Racing Reaper by Crygos 2023-01-27T19:50:58Z

Very nice game, the graphics and animtions were really cute. Also, i loved the rank names at the end.

Thank you all for the ratings! It's our second game jam, and your feedback is more than enough motivation to participate again next edition.

@raggedyjam You're right, it would help a lot to have a bit of diversity, especially since we already implemented the map system. If we have time to develop on the idea after the jam we'll work on it!

@amolker I think a bigger minimap would be a great idea. I ended up spending a lot of time on the maze generator, so I'm aware that a bit of extra effort on the enemy behaviour would have been welcome.

@adhesion In future jams, I think it would be wise to implement a better tutorials. But other than that, 57 is a pretty good high score. Watching my friends play the game, I never thought anybody else would manage to kill so many enemies, but I'm glad to have been proved wrong :)

@mark-winter I'm glad you noticed the hat. To clarify, it was just a sort of easter egg, it had no in-game benefits beyond the graphics.

Reap What They Sow by RaggedyJam 2023-01-21T11:40:18Z

The game is good, simple mechanics and a very nice tutorial. It can be confusing at times when you don't know where to go next, but overall I can enjoy playing it. The bird swooping animation + sound effect is also very nice :)
