pretty cool, i had fun with different configurations and trying to connect the villages. after playing for a bit though, i was thinking of instead of placing mountains, water etc, you should have them revealed when you put down a lumber camp, or a road (instead of an empty field), but overall the game you've made is very clean, great graphics, and really calming. Great work!

hawkin 2024-10-08 05:13

@matt-swieboda that is a great suggestion, thank you! I like the idea that they become an obstacle that the player can't control, rather than one that they can choose to put somewhere out of the way.

Thank you for playing!

matt-swieboda 2024-10-08 18:42

exactly!

deantwotwo 2024-10-08 19:32

Cute game! Some of the tile is completely blocked by the UI :( I'm entirely sure what the goal of the game is, but I enjoyed playing tiles and seeing my map grow!

ccollider 2024-10-08 19:36

It's very Dorfromantik! Systems-y/abstract games are always tough during jams because they need a little more tutorials than more immediate games where you're getting feedback on your inputs right away.

dnich013 2024-10-08 19:47

I had fun! I'll be honest and admit I've never played Dorfromantik, but I have played Islanders. So I did struggle to grasp it initially. I think with some more microeconomics in place it could be a really good, relaxing game. Really impressive that you did this within 72 hrs!

I also made a casual, relaxing game this year so It's nice to see this :)

bananplyte 2024-10-08 19:50

Cute little game - I love dorfromantik and you nailed the feeling.

Wish there was a high-score or gameover-condition or something, but I liked it a lot.

eerongal 2024-10-08 20:25

Interesting idea, but feels a bit unfinished. There doesn't seem to be a win/game over condition as far as i can tell?

bloodfin 2024-10-08 20:31

Very chill vibes, can see a bit of where you were hoping to take it, but even just trying to maximize my score at the end was fun! Nice work!

hawkin 2024-10-09 05:45

There's so much incredible feedback! Thank you for playing and writing something :)

@bananplyte @eerongal This one is super effective! I'm usually the "game loop" guy, and since I was Solo this event, I just did not get to it. I agree that it would help feel the game, even though it is small, feel complete.

@dnich013 That's cool, I'll definitely check it out! I was really interested in making a casual clicker this time, after a few entries in a row that were more action based.

@ccollider @deantwotwo I really appreciate your observations. "Feedback" is on my list of goals every time, but it always must come too late. I made sure to add some sounds and visual indicators of cause and effect, but I think what was missing was the "so what?" Sure, you know that something happened...but what did you do to make it happen? Lol

Also, the camera can be moved with arrow keys, but I agree that it is NOT expected. I think it would be better to have the mouse move the camera at the edge of the screen.

hawkin 2024-10-10 19:22

@bloodfin thank you! I tell myself every time that I will make the objective clearer, but I need to start with an objective that isn't tied to too much content generation that I can't make it to XD

Also, glad to see you back after Deep Harvest. I'm excited to check out your entry!

larrymartinjr 2024-10-10 21:16

I had some fun, but after while I wondered what I was doing. Was well done, but there needed to be some camera movement to see what was under the UI.

hawkin 2024-10-11 04:44

@larrymartinjr you are right! You may use the arrow keys to move the camera, but I agree that was not expected or communicated in-game.

Thank you for playing :)

multiplexor 2024-10-12 15:04

Was a nice chill experience! No objective, no killing, just trying to build a nice town!

It gives me vibes to Dork Romantik (table game)

I think this is a great platform on which to build something a bit more gamey (maybe add some objectives, points, or even more complex ways to build stuff)

Overall was a cool experience, Keep up the hard work! <3

Edit: I just read that you were inspired by Dorf romantik after posting my comment, definetly can see the concept

tenshi42 2024-10-12 15:13

Nice mood ! Seems that there is no "end" condition. Would have been great !

hawkin 2024-10-12 17:29

@multiplexor @tenshi42 Thank you for playing! I agree that the "objective" wasn't really there. Laying tiles and increasing resources isn't really enough of a reason to play. I really needed to give some sort of measure of how "well" you did.

I have ideas on more things to add, now that I have a start. Thank you for the feedback!

astoeth 2024-10-12 18:10

It's nice ! it's good foundations to build something great which just for now miss a goal, i'm not sure why i still have 5 tiles left bottom right when i entirely fill the map ? Anyway it's really good looking, and relaxing, good job !

h1soka 2024-10-12 18:14

The game offers an interesting experience of resource gathering with simple controls and a relaxing atmosphere, making it a great time-killer. Despite some bugs, such as issues with fullscreen mode and pop-up windows, it still captivates and delights. It would be great to see more mechanics and interaction possibilities in future updates!

hawkin 2024-10-12 19:31

@astoeth thank you for the kind words! The bug you noticed is simply because I built the "deck" without accounting for the tiles laid at the start. I'm actually working on an improvement for that now :)

@h1soka thank you for playing! I know the UI can cover some of the tiles (which is why you can move the camera with arrow keys). Can you describe the issue you had with fullscreens mode?

pierallard 2024-10-13 08:56

Very chill and polished game. The music adds a cool ambiance to the game.

docgeraud 2024-10-13 09:03

Really soothing and chill experience. Even if I wasn't sure what was the end goal, I had a great time making my little town 😊

lunaria-rava 2024-10-13 13:15

A very calm experience, very welcomed! It felt a bit dragged out in the middle / end, there's simply not happending a lot and it doesn't feel like my choices had a big impact. It is very nice to see the landscape coming together, the graphics fit really well!

hawkin 2024-10-13 13:35

@lunaria-rava you are very right! I will say that the gameplay came together during the last day, as I had to abandon the original vision and use what I had. That did not leave much time to actually play through and experience for myself what you described. I can see from the comments that the objective is really missing!

Thank you for playing:)

willoxs 2024-10-14 12:20

Hi - I didn‘t finish anything this time so I can‘t rate but maybe help with some feedback: The visuals and calm music are well chosen. I also love basically every game that goes for the hex-grid aesthetic instead of the traditional squares. But my main criticism is that it feels to me like a puzzle game with a way to easy puzzle. As far as i understood you gain „production“ of each resource for each tile thats associated with the resource in its connected component (or did i miss anything?). I think some more rules and thereby created complexity would do wonders for the enjoyment. But granted - I can‘t easily come up with good ideas at that end myself. Btw. nice cheeky additional theme incorporation there „you may not even see them“. I guess these people have some giant houses an must live in constant terror of their mega-sheep xD

hawkin 2024-10-14 16:31

@willoxs lol spot on. Thanks for the look! You are absolutely right of course about the challenge (or lack). I had hoped there would be more constraint with having to create large areas versus laying networks of roads, but that part never came. Instead, when I pivoted, I should have looked for a new way to add challenges. Till next time!

james-wilson 2024-10-14 19:58

There's a seed of a cute enjoyable game here. The lack of intensity or large overarching goal I don't find to be an issue, I think there's a space for games where I can relax and make a tiny beautiful little village without the desire for endlessly min-maxing numbers. Additionally, you might double down on this concept by naming your village, taking a screenshot of it or maybe control more minute details.

It's difficult not to over scope in a jam game; I always say plan what you want to make and then cut that in half, but going forward the one mechanic I think I would want to add to this game is having multi-tile pieces to place. This would quickly scale the placement complexity and an emergent layer of problem solving and planning would really elevate this game loop.

I hope you stick at this one, I'd like to see it grow over time. I had a relaxing time playing this, well done for submitting!

bashem 2024-10-14 20:01

Sooo relaxing. I like the mood of the game so much. Also love how you have to discover how to maximize productions by intuition and through several attempts, although I'm still not completely sure about whether I'm doing everything right or not! Some kind of initial guideline could be helpful. Definitely worth keeping developing in my opinion! Edit: whoops, just noticed the About section :)

hawkin 2024-10-15 18:17

@james-wilson @bashem thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the mood, for what it was :D

f1tzy 2024-10-15 19:22

Very chill game and nice and simple controls. Went in to a trace and just enjoyed the puzzle. Nice work.

goddoesplaydice 2024-10-16 21:44

A very relaxing and chill game. It can definitely be developed into something full-blown if desired

haayaargh 2024-10-16 22:20

I filled the map with 5 tiles left, was it possible to use them all by placing other tiles differently?

If this is just a casual build-your-own-village game then I had fun. Made a sea, then the river with plains around it and the forest around the mountains. On the other side of the river there was a quarry. I didn't aim for the resources because I quickly learned you don't use them for anything.

Obviously it is clear you wanted to make use of resources, but such is a nature of jams and never enough time :) Solid entry

One thing that bugged me was unnecessarily large music box that couldn't be closed or minimized.

hawkin 2024-10-17 04:16

@haayaargh thank you for so much attention to detail!

Yes, the card count is something I recently fixed post-jam (it did not account for the starting tiles).

I also have plans to make the UI collapsible so that you can fully admire your creations :)

I also liked the aspect that one could just relax and create. As you rightly observed, there should have been something to achieve by collecting resources (the collection alone was not enough of a motivation to play). This was a really valuable insight for me!

pengkaiou 2024-10-20 03:54

It's a great design, a very interesting strategy game, and the game's art looks very clean and simple.

sockenpuppe 2024-10-20 20:24

Very chill!

At first I thought I did something wrong because some of the pop-ups wouldn't disappear although I thought I connected the right tiles (and production would start). But I just saw that it's a known issue.

It's not the type of game I usually play but since trying out different stuff is part of the jam experience (at least it is for me) I really have to say that your game does a really good job of convincing me to give these types of games a chance more often! I really underestimated how relaxing this could be and how satisfying it is to see the results of connecting the right types of tiles.

I can definitely see this being expanded on in the future with different goals the player could try to meet and some challenges they would have to face using stuff like the towns and roads you've mentioned in the description.

Great work!

hawkin 2024-10-21 06:14

@sockenpuppe thank you so much for giving it a try and sharing such nice feedback! I'm happily working on more updates to see where the idea can go next.

And if you think you enjoy the style, I definitely recommend you check out *Dorf Romantik*, which inspired my thinking. It's an example of one direction my simple mechanic _could_ take!

t90 2024-10-23 20:41

Very chill and meditative game, well done!

jcourt 2024-10-24 05:13

This is very relaxing, and I like not having a defined goal. I do wish there was a little more to do, or that the player's decisions had a little more of an effect, but I think this could be the base of something really good, and I totally understand not quite having time and having to simplify things.

I thought the idea of placing tiles in this way could be really interesting, having to decide whether to go with a decent option you have now or wait for a better one later. I haven't played Dorf Romantik, so maybe this is an existing idea I just haven't seen before, but I like it either way.
