@deadbydeath don't know why but it's not working for me. It's freezing after START button click.

deadbydeath 2023-10-03 07:55

@gonzo13 Yes I experience issues even on itch.io, I am trying to resolve it ASAP! Thanks for trying :)

cradac 2023-10-04 20:49

The character felt really good to move, the jump had a good feeling too, although mostly I wasn't sure what exactly I was trying to accomplish. Some guidance and maybe an easier first few encounters would make the start of the game more gratifying :)

deadbydeath 2023-10-05 11:10

@cradac I was trying so hard these 2 days to make the executables to work, so I forgot to write in the description the little lore that I have in my mind about the game . I will include it ASAP. I have till now only 1 level so I wanted it to be a little bit more time consuming but I guess I made it a little bit too hard for the users! I will try to think some ways to fix this, too! Anyway, thanks a lot for your kind words and for the review my friend! Keep up and good luck

Cool game! A bit too difficult, with no checkpoints it's a bit boring to redo everything each time you die. I didn't understand what the pickups where for. There is also a weird thing with the double jump where you get higher if you use it early, it throw me out for some time. I also didn't like that I needed to "install" the game and would prefer a simple executable to launch. All an all it's a cool entry, keep up the good works!

constance 2023-10-05 13:54

I won, but my poor Donnie is still nowhere to be found .

Anyway, I noticed there's some image glitches on the screen which sometimes appeared for a split second an then disappeared again. Sadly, as you mentioned, the power up thingies were broken and could not be used, I believe they would've made the gameplay a lot more fun. Lastly, I think you should make those melee enemies moving around or chasing after the player, that would make the combat more engaging, as of now I can just jump pass them and continue onwards to the finish.

But regardless, it was a really enjoyable experience, well done!

baconeta 2023-10-05 13:54

Things I enjoyed: the character movement and control was crisp and felt very natural and reasonably forgiving. I also liked the varied cast of characters (though barely noticed a difference between some of them coz I whizzed through once I figuered out what to avoid). The audio was good, nothing mind blowing, however it did suit the game as a whole.

Things I didn't enjoy: I could not find any good way that this linked to the theme, nor did it contain much playability which is disappointing for such a great character and solid movement. I didn't understand anything I was trying to do at first, and there were a few graphical tears in the screen. Also, it seems I made it to the end but I didn't even notice that it should be the end (I walked there by mistake) and so that could be telegrahped a lot better.

Overall, a good entry with a lot of room to make it more full :D

Pretty difficult platformer, took a few tries. The install location is weird. Did not use any power ups, and it seems like the faster you double jump the higher you can launch yourself  Well done on the art and music. Gameplay was fine with the variety of enemies, but at points it was pretty difficult to platform precisely.

@nusan Thanks for the feedback, it is much appreciated! This weird physics thing with the double jump I think is due to how the Box2D physics library works (and of course the way I implemented the double jump using this library). The force that is applied to the dynamic body (the player) is the same no matter the height from the ground that they are, but something weird happens while the player is on the air (something like he is dragged more from the ground so the same force is pushing him less on the y axis). These things of course are some kind of speculation and I would like to dig deeper in Box2D to understand it. Also, I could not agree more with your comment about installing the game, but I built it with jpackage and this is how it works, I should definitely check how I could just create an executable (maybe I think that I could distribute the folder that is created from the installation - I am not sure if it's going to work, but I will check it). In general thank you very much for your kind words and for the creative feedback! Looking forward to try your wonderful "pico" entry

deadbydeath 2023-10-06 09:14

@constance Hahaha it would not be a real "chase" if he found Donnie at the end of the first level. Thank you a lot for your feedback!

@baconeta thank you my friend for your kind words! It is appreciated! They tearing on the screen is because I didn't add edge padding to the textures that I use for the tiles so when the camera moves due to interpolation some white lines are drawn on the screen. I am trying to resolve it. There are many things that I could add to make it more full, I am trying to do some of them, because I know that it is like a half product. About the theme, the power ups functionality was supposed to be the link to the theme, but still it refuses to work on the builds that I create . Anyway, thank you again for the feedback! Have fun!

@merdeboi Thank you my friend for the feedback and the kind words. Have fun!!!

I really love the idea of a grid for power up allocations and having to plan out what to place where, unfortunately I am not sure that they were working for me? If it was then I couldn't tell which was a shame. Would love to see a more in depth development of this idea, really cool!

aevek 2023-10-09 03:29

The power up grid was really cool. I definitely think some more explanation of how the mechanic works could help, because I was initially confused as to why it seemed to have no effect. It was only once I filled a row and saw the power up time remaining in the corner that I finally understood (I think?). Even then, I feel like 15 seconds wasn't really long enough to reward how long between power ups it was for me.

The platforming controls felt good, even with the weird double jump. I really liked that you had seemingly designed the levels around it, so until I read these comments I thought that behavior was intended as a cool twist on double jumping.

I didn't really like how many times I had to attack to defeat some enemy types, most notably the first you encounter. That took so many hits that I actually tried to avoid all enemies for quite a while until I realized that enemy type was just a sponge and only avoided those ones.

I think this is the base of a really solid game that just needs some balance and bug fixing to be really very fun. Great work.

noobgeek 2023-10-09 03:49

I definitely like the atmosphere of the game. Very nice music, clear controls and appearance of the game. I love simple pixel platformers in this style. I would like to see more complex animation in the full version and other mechanics (if you decide to make a sequel)

dannysimo 2023-10-09 06:30

The game is very nice, a little hard at first)).The power up system very interesting, but a little confusing , it really need an explanation, but overall the game is fire. Good luck.

deadbydeath 2023-10-09 10:18

@antoniothereis @aevek @noobgeek @dannysimo Thank you guys for the kind words and the beautiful feedback! It is much appreciated!

eeperdeheap 2023-10-09 19:12

This is a solid platformer, but a little hard and twitchy for my fingers. The rune powerups are a nice touch, but it was a little hard to understand. Maybe it's the controls with the keyboard, but a little slower movement would probably help.

lincolnsalles 2023-10-09 19:53

I think there are serious level design problems that ruin the experience. I don't know, a very simple platform that I think is far from the tight space theme. The music is cool, but a good entry for the short time, but maybe if it was shorter and better worked...

I finished. I won. It's over muah hahahahahaha i had like no life at the end. lolz It was SO much easier once i figured out you weren't hurt by the people. LoL

nevernox 2023-10-10 00:50

Interesting entry for the theme! I liked the story, overall mood, various and funny enemy designs (I wonder what the old ninja do to those pink tigers, so they come to him for revenge? x)). After a couple of tries, I managed to get to the finish, though only by ignoring all the enemies xD Though, I've managed to try all the combinations of runes in action.

I agree with some of the commentaries that the level design is a bit too brutal. Also, some enemies have no animation for preparing the attack - hence why I ended up skipping them all. If you want the player to kill them, I think it would be nice to at least give more clarity for enemy attacks, and give a reason not to skip them (for example, score). Another suggestion is to change health combination to heal, instead of temporary buff (I think it would encourage the player to fight, and the health combination is least useful at the moment anyway).

Overall, thank you for this fun little game! I will be looking for post-jam version, and wish you even better projects in the future!

dk-game-labs 2023-10-11 09:46

Pretty funny game, I made a pacifist speedrun with no kills, only double jumps. I don't really know how to use the runes, but game easily completed without it. Nice work!

saralizzieb 2023-10-12 21:56

Fun little game, tough but solid platforming. Really like the pixel art look, overall nice job!

thyoi 2023-10-14 04:39

Untitled.png Great game, after getting killed by monsters so many times I chose to speed through it peacefully

snesgaard 2023-10-14 19:38

Loved the power up system. Gotta be honest, had a really hard time getting used to jump being W and not space. Also didn't really seem like there was a reason to fight the enemies, so I kinda just avoided them all.

prismapunch 2023-10-15 21:41

Very fun style and catchy music, would have liked a better indication of when the character is taking damage.

ex3d0 2023-10-18 22:45

Pretty fun game, the graphics are solid and the audio is nice and punchy. The movement was fairly solid but the level design left a bit to be desired, and explanation on what the power ups do would have helped out as well.

nescre 2023-10-19 03:57

Pros: * Gameplay was super engaging. Going for runes was quite a lot of fun, and put me into some tight situations. Having a dedicated inventory system pushed this over the top in terms of polish and mechanical proficiency. * Pixel visuals felt very well thought out, and helped give the game a professional feel. * Music was a nice accompaniment to the rest of the game, and didn't feel out of place.

Cons: * Control bindings, even after beating the game, felt very unintuitive. I feel it would've been much more fluid to bind jump to Space, and attack to LClick. * I didn't feel that there was much of an incentive to engage with the enemies, nor the rune system; after multiple attempts, I wound up just hopping over most of the enemies due to the unnecessary risk it put me in. I also didn't realize that the rune system existed until after I first beat the game; to remedy this, I think properly signalling its binding in the HUD (maybe around where health is) would go a long way. * I would've liked a way to modify already-placed runes; especially towards the end of the game, I found I would stumble across something that I simply couldn't use.

Bugs: * 2nd jump speed is additive to whatever your current speed is; this means that pulling off one jump right after the other will send you way higher than is likely intended. Conversely, if you're falling, the 2nd jump will give you next to no height. Because I often found it hard to tell what was beneath me when falling, this would sometimes lead to me unpredictably landing in lava pits with no recourse. * Initially starting the game immediately snaps your camera up to the player from a far-down, indeterminate point.

Overall a fun game that really pushed the limits of what can be done in 3 days; the amount of care you guys put in shows.

ty-victorson 2023-10-19 05:21

I tried to fight the enemies at first but after landing in the lava? a couple times I just ran through to the finish! The game felt good to play the controls took a minute to get used to but overall this is a solid entry!

knightoftheday 2023-10-20 11:53

Great game! Very fun gameplay and smooth controls. Good stylish graphics. Good job!
