I scored 190! Very cool slash effects :)

jonah-srg 2022-04-04 16:37

The visuals here are really cool. The name ZEZ implies REZ is an inspiration, but I also see some Graceful Explosion Machine in here as well, especially with the melee attack. The push/pull of enemy kills/time ticking didn't feel super noticeable as I was always moving as fast as possible to the next enemy swarm to regain my lost time. The movement and melee attack control well, and I appreciate that the slash feels fairly generous on the player's end for wiping out enemies quickly and efficiently.

lisyarus 2022-04-04 19:21

A really nice game! The time mechanic reminds me of an old flash game "N" about a ninja. Very nice art and effects! The gameplay becomes a bit repetitive over time, though. Anyways, good job!

jared-lomangino 2022-04-04 20:01

I really like the graphics. Very clean controls as well, fun game to play!

esayitch 2022-04-04 20:26

Is 241 any good? Enjoyed it very much!

xenomote 2022-04-04 21:20

the perfect game, it feels very nice. could do with some animation polish but other than that its really solid

frostbiiten 2022-04-04 21:56

Pretty fun experience, simple to learn and fun to play. I really enjoyed the sound effects, music and atmosphere and the difficulty increase was nice. My only suggestion is maybe another mechanic to make it less repetitive but overall it's a solid game! :D Screenshot 2022-04-04 175413.png

furtive-pygmy 2022-04-04 23:08

Effects are great, and music suits the art style well. I found it a bit repetitive, but not boring. As stated above, another mechanic / different levels would have made the game shine a lot more. Great effort and good luck.

haztro 2022-04-04 23:36

Nice entry. Super satisfying slash mechanic, feels great. I love the character design for the main dude. Would have loved to have seen some variety in the enemies and levels. I encountered a bug where my screen went all orange almost as if the player glow was scaled up massively (I could be way off) but it meant I coudn't see the enemy rings.

david-york 2022-04-05 01:33

I like the visuals of the character and the baddies. The audio really worked. All the little effect sounds, feedback, etc. was great. I would like a bit more challenge - more badges don't mean more challenge really because they heal me when they die.

ideaspersecond 2022-04-05 02:25

Enjoyable and fun! Slicing enemies was very enjoyable! Nice job! Screenshot 2022-04-04 192451.png

jsmile 2022-04-05 02:30

Amazing game!

tengusheath 2022-04-05 02:32

@gustavo thanks for playing

tengusheath 2022-04-05 02:33

@jonah-srg REZ was definitely an inspiration. The visual style of the character and enemies specifically. I've never heard of Graceful Explosion Machine, but I will check it out.

tengusheath 2022-04-05 02:34

@lisyarus thanks for playing. The gameplay loop does get a bit repetitive which is why I tried to make the games quick, so people could try it out for a couple of minutes before they get bored.

tengusheath 2022-04-05 02:35

@jared-lomangino thanks!

tengusheath 2022-04-05 02:36

@esayitch 241 is pretty good. I say most people start having problems around 200. Thanks for playing

tengusheath 2022-04-05 02:36

@xenomote I don't know if its perfect, but thanks for playing.

tengusheath 2022-04-05 02:38

@frostbiiten thanks, yeah I wanted to add a boss enemy or add projectiles to make it more interesting, but ran out of time.

tengusheath 2022-04-05 02:38

@furtive-pygmy thanks for playing

tengusheath 2022-04-05 02:40

@haztro thanks for playing. That's an interesting bug, I'll have to see if I can reproduce it, not sure what it would be.

tengusheath 2022-04-05 02:42

@ideaspersecond Thanks for playing

tengusheath 2022-04-05 02:42

@david-york thanks for playing, I originally had the enemies take a lot of your time away when you took a hit, but I found the gameplay more fun and frantic as the time starts draining faster vs trying to dodge enemies, so I made them weaker.

tengusheath 2022-04-05 02:42

@jsmile Thanks!

circle 2022-04-05 03:41

Ended with a 239. First off, really cool graphics. They're really unique and very visually appealing. The gameplay as well is quite nice. I found myself getting into a flow very easily. I really enjoyed playing. I also think it makes good use of the theme, the ever ticking health bar, that can only be replenished by combat. It's just very nice and well polished. Overall really fun game. Good experience.

austin-sierra 2022-04-05 04:20

Every aspect of this game is well balanced, the graphics, audio, application of the theme. It all fits together very nicely. Obviously you have a talent in terms of planning and organizing a project. That being said, nothing really stuck out in this game that made it feel special. Just killing generic crystal enemies as a generic crystal figure, its missing a certain charm that I think it could have had if you used a little more imagination with the character design. Great submission for a game jam though, and I enjoyed the few minutes I spent playing!

tengusheath 2022-04-05 05:19

@circle thanks for playing

tengusheath 2022-04-05 05:21

@austin-sierra Thanks. I kept the character design simple because its time consuming animating 8 directional characters.

william-corrin 2022-04-05 05:22

I think I agree with @austin-sierra. This game is obviously well made, the graphics are nice, there is sound effects and music, and it feels very complete.

I just couldn't really find myself getting into it - I think for me it was maybe the gameplay. It was very much rinse and repeat, and I don't think my health bar even dropped below 80. I let a bunch of guys swarm me to see what happened, and then I just slashed all of them at once and got back up to 100.

I think for me, its missing the challenge element. It _looks_ like a game that should be a tough action game that rewards sleek movement and precise combat. But it _plays_ more like a really easy point+click game with no consequences for not performing well.

Anyways. Sorry if thats too much critique. I do think its a really solid game that is built very well. I just wanted to give my honest feedback :)

Great work!

tengusheath 2022-04-05 05:44

@william-corrin My original design had the enemies do more damage, but I didn't find it very fun. I basically turned the enemies into fodder that you could zip around and kill quickly to race against the clock.

The challenge comes from trying to kill as many enemies as you can. So its what you make of it. I'm interested to see people push past 300 kills.

skyward4d 2022-04-05 07:39

It's impressive you were able to make such a cohesive game (In terms of graphics, audio and general feel) in the time constraint of the compo, while keeping the quality of the different elements quite high at the same time. The lighting effects on the player/enemies was a really nice touch. I did notice enemies occasionally spawned right next to me without giving me time to react, but overall the mechanics were intuitive, fluid and fun. Really enjoyed this one.

vhalenn 2022-04-05 12:26

The graphics are nice but I felt the controls a bit rigid, maybe some inertia would have been nice on the movements and dash !

fifut 2022-04-05 15:43

I like neon colored lights like in Tron.

Maybe a little bit too easy. Probably I can play long time before the inevitable.

gummibot 2022-04-05 16:29

Hi, liked the game, but it was super frustrating that the cursor was not locked, I can't count the times I pressed right click on another tab or opened something. Get's repetitive quite quickly, but god audio, music and overall mood. Good job :)

castitatis 2022-04-05 18:30

nice game! Although I got stuck in a hole after a dash :( It looks very clean and readable. Simple mechanics but effective. Good job

tengusheath 2022-04-05 18:45

@castitatis yea I couldn't perfect the collisions while dashing so you can get yourself stuck unfortunately.

tengusheath 2022-04-05 18:47

@gummibot sorry the mouse frustrated you. I generally play browser games fullscreen to avoid that stuff. Thanks for playing

tengusheath 2022-04-05 18:48

@fifut a lot of people are finding the game too easy. I'll be sure to make a harder game next jam.

tengusheath 2022-04-05 18:49

@vhalenn thanks for the input

tengusheath 2022-04-05 18:51

@skyward4d thanks so much. I went through a lot of iterations of enemy spawning and couldn't quite find the right method. I wanted to add a spawn animation and delay but ran out of time.

pixelbrain 2022-04-06 23:34

Cool entry and very impressive for 48 hours. I definitely think you should boost the cursor/reticle contrast so it's not so easy to lose track of. That aside, I think the game takes a simple idea and does it pretty well, so good job!

flyingkaida 2022-04-07 13:09

zez.png

Great game! Mechanics were solid, graphics phenomenal. My only issue is I'd often lose track of where the crosshairs went. Maybe a more contrasting color? either way, loved the entry!

suchista 2022-04-13 09:34

I liked it, it was a very fun experience! The art is very cool, I like the lighting. One thing this game really needs is some form of marking the place in which an enemy will spawn (like a second before). Good game tho!

This was my second attempt after I discovered the dash and I don't think I can go much higher:

2022-04-13_22h04_29.png

Nice game. A tried and true action formula executed well. I liked the graphics and particularly the range indicators that gave a hint about areas with higher enemy density. I think that played an important role in the game and avoided people getting stuck in places where there are no enemies to defeat.

A minor graphical thing: I found it a bit weird and immersion-breaking to allow rotating the slash graphic after it was executed. I think a slash is something that happens in the moment and should be left behind, not move with the player.

Some thoughts about game feel since this is a very action oriented game: I like how you added screenshake, although I think it could have benefitted from a little bit more fine-tuning. I can't put my finger on it, but it felt slightly off. Maybe it would have helped to have directional shake that pushed the camera away from the enemy for a few frames?

I think the audio effects could also have been a little bit crunchier. The single point of interaction of the player with the game world is hitting an enemy, so I think this moment deserves a little bit more care to make it as impactful as possible (without going overboard on the special effects)

Anyway, you might know this video, but I like to post it under games that are action oriented and could use a little bit more juice. It helped me a lot when I first discovered it and I think you can find a few things that make your game even more impactful

Nice game, I had fun.
