Fun game, the hexagonal tiles made the controlls a little wonky but found it charming, the centipede jump scared me :D
all in all very enjoyable, the controls take some getting used to being on a hex grid but very relaxing once I got going.
Amazing that this is made in C++ lol, Awesome job!
Really nice concept and gameplay! I like the idea that giant centipedes will come occasionaly and bite your tail off! Possible idea could be making the worm move in beat to the music! Game gives a Crypt of the Necrodancer vibes!
This might be the most innovative of the ~25 games I've played so far. I was expecting something more like classic snake, but the hex movement and terrain variation is actually quite novel and interesting! It's a little awkward in some ways - for example I have a hard time intuiting how the worm will move when moving into empty space. But I always appreciate seeing people try something new, and this also has solid graphics/audio/etc. to support that. Awesome job!
I love how this simple idea well thought out idea gives this game so much depth. An instant classic.
Great music and sound effects! Those centipedes were intense! Excellent variation of the snake game.
There's definitely a lot of potential with this one. Using a hexagonal grid for something like this makes the movement really unique, and having the worm move slightly differently through different materials gives a lot of options for cool things to happen as you dig further down. If you wanted to take it further and add more distinct materials/areas, and more unique things to find in your worming adventures, it could really be a blast.
I think the only slightly negative thing that stands out to me in the current version is that the camera movement feels very chunky depending on your speed. I don't think this would be bad if it were matched a bit more into the gameplay, such as Keppersnapper's suggestion to make it in sync with music, but in its current form I think having it always smoothed out would just feel a little better.
Overall though I think this was pretty solid, especially as a compo game. We should totally have a way to add extra cool factor points for using your own framework too, that's fantastic!
Fun little game. I think it could have been harder though.
This game has a lot of similarities with my game, but with an entirely different feel. Hex grid is a great thing. I have yet to make a game that uses a hex grid. The environment is fun to run around in, but it's really hard to get long! Those d@mn centipedes are too fast to get out of the way without losing a bunch of yourself. I wish the controls would allow me to hold left or right to keep turning instead of having to press it many times to make more than one turn.
Overall, a very cool entry and a great use of the theme. Great job!
My poor worm fell into a centipede track that was carved through solid rock, hit a dead end, and couldn't get out! 😠2021-04-27_222425_716087344.png
Also, the game doesn't quite fit on my 1080p screen, but the scaling feature didn't seem to work (just got a black screen).
The gameplay is neat and pretty unique, and fits well with the theme. I was so mad at myself for managing to just barely dodge out of the way of the food, by accident, over and over again! The music is solid, the centipede sound effect is appropriately scary, and the sprites are simple but effective. The color palette in particular gives me an "DOS / early Windows game" vibe, which is not a bad thing at all.
Food definitely seems to become more scarce further down. I guess that and the hard rock are the limiting factors on how deep you can go. And it's kind of hard to avoid the centipedes sometimes (the audio cue helps but it's not clear what height they'll come in at, and once I had it spawn almost on top of me so it was impossible to get out of the way). Certainly seems like better living to stay in the fertile topsoil and collect all the goodies there. I guess that's the life of an earthworm alright!
Well done!
This was fun! Very simple for an open-world experience, although it was fun to wander around and see what showed up. I was curious as to whether the different food items did different things, but I couldn't tell any difference, except that often centipedes seemed to show up right after I ate a yellow leaf. The centipedes were scary! There were rumbly sounds that didn't seem to do anything sometimes, too - not sure what that was. Art was good, music cool, gameplay intuitive and fun, and I agree that the hex movement is interesting. It was so satisfying getting to looser soil or holes and being able to move fast.
Perfect submission. Thunderous applause. I'm very curious what your "gam" submodule has hidden away inside itself! ;D
@pierce-brooks There's not much there but I find it useful. After doing a few ludum dares, I took out the bits I kept reusing and made it into a library. It basically handles screen transitions, input, and resources. There are a few graphics primitives to do sprite- and tile-based games which is what I usually make. There's a link to it in the description if you want to know more but the readme is badly out of date :/
Very cool idea for game mechanics and solid gameplay. I was getting completely wrecked by the centipede.
very interesting to have basically hexagonal snake in real time! i really liked it. the controls were a bit strange at first since they seemed to be inverted, but i got the hang of it. i really liked the music, especially how it changed once the centipede showed up. really cool project, great job!
I like the art style of this game. The centipede was really nasty xD. Cool game!
Cool game. Fits theme well. Only critisism is felt a bit wonky sometimes (movement) and the menus were hard to navigate. Apart from that really good!
Very nice game! Reminds me of my very first Ludum Dare game, which was also an Earthworm snake-like game ^^ The controls had me confused at first, because I expected more snike-like controls where you go up if you press up regardless of the orientation of your snake/worm. It would be problematic on a hex grid though, so I understand why you went with the point of view of the worm controls. After a while I got the hang of it and was mostly to able to control the worm ( at least until the centipedes scared me to death ;) ). Great entry!
Decent game, and an interesting take on the theme also. Took me a while to figure out the controls, and then to get the knack of the movement but once I got there it was fun trying to get as deep as I could. Never managed to avoid the milipede/centipedes and always ended up getting chopped in half. As others have mentioned above, using the HTML5 version fullscreen mode didn't seem to work and by default it seemed to have resized the canvas in a way that chopped off the bottom of the screen. Other than that though worked a charm.
Fun simple game. Visuals and audio were great.
I found the controls took a bit to get used to, especially with the hexagonal tiles. Centipedes were very difficult to anticipate. Felt almost random whether I would get hit or not. Not sure what strategy to use when I hear them coming.
I also wasn't quite sure of the advantages of getting longer were.
Cool game. Great work in 48h!
I like your introduction text here on ludum dare. It has a bit humour in it, but not too much. Your game takes a good spin on the snake formula (hexagon, different tiles/speeds, you have to go deeper, centepede which can cut your length) which is quite an accomplishment so I will give it a 4.5 in innovation. It is also pretty polished, has fitting sound and consistent good graphic style. The centepede kinda scared me^^ well done! Also I think the level is kinda random generated - If that's the case, good job there. I feel like the length of the worm is just an addon, that does not prove skill very much (which is okay), cause you can't evade the centepede well enough. The depth you get to in the other hand requires skill, butI really enjoy the beginning of the level more, cause you move much faster and seem to have more choices where to go (or I missed a path, i don't know, but it seemed to me that after a certain point you only encounter dirt-rock). Wish that pacing would continue throughout the level. The game has good potential for such a simple concept. Very well done!
Oh and here my score: score.jpg
Start... oh hex snake that's different... Early... Fall mechanic.. that's new... Mid... Different soil types, and impassible ones... that's unique. Then... WTF... OMG... My TAIL noooooo.
Simple, and yet not. Wonderful Jam Entry. (A little more warning on the centipede perhaps...)
